FPL Question Time – Salah vs Mané, international break and Wildcard tips

More names from our panel of Fantasy Premier League managers are back to answer your questions, this time as we go into the first international break of the campaign.

The big question which we’ve had plenty of submissions on is whether Mohamed Salah (£13.om) should come out of our squads.

We’ve got some opinion on that conundrum while the subjects of transfers during the international break and Wildcard tips are also discussed.

Once again, we had an overwhelming response to our request for questions. Unfortunately, we can only answer a handful each week but keep your queries coming in for the rest of the season.

Here’s a reminder of who is on the panel for your Gameweek 4 Question Time:

James Egersdorff – You can’t get much more experienced than this man when it comes to FPL. After yet another season inside the top 5,000 managers in 2017/18, James is a Fantasy Football Scout ‘Hall of Fame’ legend.

Tom from Who Got the Assist? – One half of one of the fastest growing FPL podcasts of recent times.

Holly Shand – Founder of the popular Fantasy Football Community website and recent video star for Official FPL.

QUESTION ONE – JAMES EGERSDORFF

Do we have enough information to be reasonably sure that Mane provides a better points return over Salah and if so, should we be looking to move Salah on?

James: “The lack of a double-digit return from the ‘Egyptian King’, combined with the smoking hot start to the season from Mané has led many FPL managers (myself included!) to investigate the possibility of doing the unthinkable and removing Salah from our squads.

“As a pre-Gameweek 4 Wildcarder, it’s fair to say the idea of cashing in on Salah did look attractive. I spent the week tinkering with my squad given with treasure trove of riches his £13m opened up. It looked like a combination of Mané and Hazard versus Salah and a (roughly) £7m midfielder here.

“It’s definitely a tough choice. We’ve only had four Gameweeks played and therefore only a small sample of data to base such a potentially season-defining decision on. So I kept the Egyptian in my squad.

“We must ask ourselves ‘do we feel that Mané and Salah will maintain their current performance levels?’ Mané is flying right now, with a score of 9.8 per game to Salah’s 6.8. To put that into context, if they were to continue that over 38 Gameweeks, Mané would smash the all-time FPL high score record (303 set by Salah last season) with a whopping 372. Do we really think he’s capable of doing that?

“On the other hand, Salah would weigh in with just over 258, which in fairness isn’t a million miles away from his optimum points per game levels seen in 2017/18.

“Working the figures again, this tells us Salah is underperforming against last year’s figures by around 15 percent, whereas Mane is massively overperforming, even when we factor in his 10-game absence last season.

“The question FPL managers need to ask themselves therefore is whether they feel Salah will make up the performance level deficit and return to the mean and whether Mane can continue to outperform his mean score by such a high margin.”

QUESTION TWO – HOLLY SHAND

How much team value can you potentially earn playing your Wildcard during the international break and is it worth using if your squad doesn’t need a major fix?

Holly: “The international break tends to be a steadier time for price rises and falls than many expect. So I’d expect perhaps just one or two players rising twice, to give the all important £0.1 million gained value.

“However, if you cannot afford the price swings to ditch underperforming assets for the in-form players, the Wildcard can still be valuable.

“Beware the fixture swings and chasing early season points though.

“Liverpool in particular have a tricky upcoming spell.”

QUESTION THREE – TOM

If you are not planning to use the Wildcard for Gameweek 5, how many point hits should we consider taking to make up an injury and suspension filled squad? Also, should we be making early transfer considering how fast players prices are rising?

Tom: “How many hits should we consider? Well, obviously this depends very much on your team and what the situation is.

“If you are dead set on keeping your Wildcard, I’d focus on getting a good XI out for Gameweek 5, after International Break, rather than fixing bench fodder – unless you are doing a combination move as part of your hit (i.e. moving a £4.5 defender down to a £4.0 to free up cash).

“That being said, I’d be thinking that if you need multiple hits to deal with your team’s injuries and suspensions then there’s no need to be stubborn about pulling your wildcard; your squad needs it.

“Should we make early transfers considering how fast players’ prices rise? It depends in what context.

“If there’s little to no midweek action, as we’ve seen at the start of this season, then an early transfer is a risk that can be worth taking.

“However as we saw with Wilfried Zaha and Kevin de Bruyne picking up training ground knocks you are never immune from a shock injury.

“But as we start to enter the period where continental football and other cup competitions return, I’d advise being more cautious with your early transfers as you may end up needing a hit to fix an impetuous move.

“Essentially: you’ll remember your overall rank at the end of the season, not your team value.”

With regards to 2, considering Salah stats now, he can be on fire vs Spurs or Saints so I'd rather go for 3 but want to hear some ideas

I'm looking to drop Zaha down to a 5/5.5 to bump Wilson up to a second decent up front.
Being greedy/safe want my 3rd striker to be nailed even though he'll be on my bench.
Or realistically need to go cheaper?

Jiminez more secure than Joselu, and a better pick. I'm tempted to downgrade Arnie to him. Wolves have looked really good and he has been unlucky.

People ditching Zaha need to chill out a bit. He's arguably the most nailed player in the entire league, has scored two goals in three appearances so far this season and has Huddersfield, Newcastle, Bournemouth, Wolves and Everton in the next five. He has 12 days to recover from this groin injury too.

    1. Pacer.
      • 9 Years

which could take weeks to recover from, and most people ditching him are probably on a WC, no? Why risk a drop

It reeks of knee jerk. If you've had him since the start, he has risen 0.1 which you can afford to lose as it doesn't effect selling value. With two weeks of internationals to play, ditching when not on a wildcard is totally premature in my mind.

        1. Pacer.
          • 9 Years
          5 years, 8 months ago

He's a forward with 12 points in 3 games. And struggling for baps. Not exactly essential when you can buy better.

4 weeks off, man. 4 weeks. That's price drop and a valuable spot in your squad.
I was even considering moving him out after the Soton game before the injury news, due to his underlying stats (and eye test) not backing up his 2 goals in 3.

I have a feeling D.Silva will be nailed as long as the title battle is on. His rotation didnt really set in until the deal with his kid and at the end of the season when it was all but wrapped up. Pep said he would be rested more this season but with KDB out hes their best midfielder by far. Will get his rest in the CL.

I'm fairly confident he'll get rested like everyone else. B Silva can fill the number 10 role, or a formation shift means he could be rested for almost anyone, Mahrez, Sterling, Gundogan, Jesus. I think he'll play most weeks but not all. I think I'm happy to gamble on him.

    Patricio (hamer)

    Alonso - Mendy - Robbo - AWB - (Peltier)
Salah - Mané - Mhki - Fraser (Stephens)
    King - Agüero - Zaha.

Should I transfer Zaha before price change?
    Or mhki for lucas?

As you said, 2 areas of concern are Zaha and Mikhi.
I was in a different boat but fundamentally the same.
I needed to move Mikhi and Wally and wanted Hazard.
So not too far away from you. This game is about luck and calculated risks.
My choices to change would be to put in Haz Lucas and take out Salah who I don't need to captain.
You are only thinking Zaha and Mikhi.
Do you really have alternatives you want? You do have 4 able defenders so moves are not necessary.
However, price changes will come and you could see a .3 to .4 mil price correction x 2 which is a fair bit of money.
Everyone says points at the season ends is what counts but most high priced squads does make a difference in the second half.
A very long winded way of saying go for both as it won't end up much more than a 4 point mistake.

Much discussion about Mane vs Salah, but what about Sterling over Salah, plus 2 mil for the next 3....

Good option imo. Have Mané & Sterling atm but could switch to Dilva & Salah in a couple of weeks. Just need to find 0.6... Please sell, Salah people.

The more people sell Salah, the more I want to keep him. Having Salah as a somewhat differential could potentially be very nice

I haven't seen much from any defence in the league which suggests he needs removing for fixture reasons - I was a Salah-denier for ages last season on the basis of his errant shooting (he does miss a ridiculous amount of great chances) but he does seem to get those chances every game and could brace against anyone

    Patricio (Stekelenburg)
    Alonso, Robertson, Mendy, Shaw (Wan-Bissaka)
    Salah, Mané, Mkhitaryan, Walcott (Stephens)
    Aguero, Arnautovic (Kamara)

    1FT, 0.8 in bank

Don't think I quite need to WC.

Is Shaw, Arnautovic, Kamara --> Cedric, Mitrovic, Wilson worth a -8?

Personally don't see the value in wildcarding this early. I would want to wildcard once Kane is firing and when we get a clearer idea of which players will consistently perform.

How are the WC'ers going to get Salah back, or Kane once he starts scoring? You'll be wanting to wildcard your wildcard.

    Be patient. 😉

I agree - there are still too many unanswered questions and not enough information in my opinion to make long-term decisions.

Of course a wildcard is warranted if you've had a disaster of a start, but I see many teams around wildcarding without needing to. (e.g. for a few prices rises that in all likelihood won't happen, or to sort out the bench etc.)

Be patient and keep an injury ravaged, rotation risk, price falling squad when players like Alonso, Vardy,Lukaku,Laca,Auba,Trippier (the ones I doidn't own pre WC) etc showing such great promise fixture and form wise?

Not for me Berb. Very happy to have WCed.

As far as getting Salah and Kane is concerned, they are the 2 most expensive players in the game and would need to perform on amazing levels (not goal a game) to warrant major hits from me. So, i'm sorted.

Lukaku + Mane + Hazard is far better than Kane + Salah + Kamara. If you get what I mean.

Well, triple captain Aguero didn't quite pan out. Apologies if I took anyone else down with me.

For a second I thought Mkhi would remain on the bench and I'd get Ings' 8 points so a bit of a bummer FPL week all in all.

Mate had a fantastic wedding though so karma restored. 🙂

Fair play to you coming out, there were a few other Aguero TC-ers that have remained hidden since then 😉

Personally I always advised people against doing it - it's one thing to follow your gut, but another to promote it as a 'strategy' when probability was against it.

        1. Twisted Saltergater
          • 14 Years

Could easily have gone either way, tbh. I've played TC at the "right" time the past 2 seasons and not had much to show for it. The fact that I played it before an international break when rotation isn't a factor levelled out the DGW factor, for me. Just a shame it didn't pay off.

Had a mate TC Aguero in October when he scored 5, so it can be used sensibly image SGW.

The issue for me is that it's not down to being 'sensible', as it's a decision that's justified exclusively by its result. There is always a much higher probability that a good player will score a lot of points in 2 matches than in 1. Sometimes you get lucky - Salah 29 points vs. Watford last season, Aguero 25 vs. Newcastle in 2015 and 20 vs. Huddersfield this year - but most of the times you don't.

Of course TC-ing during a DGW isn't guaranteed success - but it's the sensible decision as it increases your chances of getting a haul. (since it doesn't even need anything extraordinary like a hat-trick or 5 goals - one goal in each game, maybe an assist, and you're looking at a 20 point haul there)

I'm not advocating blindly captaining DGW players (hi, Negredo, Gabbiadini and Carroll TC-ers!) but as a strategy, i.e. a way of maximising your potential returns, it's always going to be the way as long as one of the viable options has a DGW on.

This. Doesn't guarantee success (see last year's 9 pointers) but significantly reduces odds in your favour

We all know that 🙂 You're telling us that a player with 2 games has a higher chance of scoring than someone with a single game!

It's the other lesser factors that contribute to the decision; form, fixture congestion, team form, opposition form.

I felt Newcastle were in a bad place, that they'd sit back and have 20% possession and Aguero would be mailed to start and have plenty of chances to score. Turns out Pep changed to a 424 bizarrely with only Fernandinho as a ball winner instead of the 352. His tactics may be something we can never reliably predict.

Oh I agree - Aguero had good chances to score more than 1 goal vs. that Newcastle team, it's why I captained him after all. But a good enough haul for a triple captain? That would require a hat-trick at the very least, and that is unlikely to happen often, regardless of opposition.

Definitely not a wildcard situation. Strong looking team. Wait it out for Richarlison to replace Walcott and good to go. Maybe Salah to Hazard for a 4 week punt if you wanna spice things up a little.
