Burnley’s fixtures easing up – but their defence remains a concern

With Wolverhampton Wanderers (a), Bournemouth (h), Cardiff City (a) and Huddersfield Town (h) next up for Burnley, the Clarets sit top of our Season Ticker for defence over the coming four Gameweeks.

All is not well at Turf Moor, however. A defence that performed so admirably and proved so popular among Fantasy bosses in 2017/18 that their goalkeeper and hitherto first-choice back four all rose to £5.0m in Fantasy Premier League this season have flattered to deceive.

Sean Dyche’s side have conceded as many goals after four league fixtures (nine) than they had after 12 matches of the previous campaign, offering little encouragement for those considering drafting in a Burnley defender for this quartet of upcoming encounters.

Stephen Ward and Matthew Lowton (£4.9m) were both dropped to the bench for the visit of Manchester United last weekend, with fatigue hardly a factor given that the full-back pair had both sat out the Thursday night encounter with Olympiakos.

Dyche’s comments after the match on Sunday acknowledged the repercussions of the Thursday/Sunday fixture turnaround but implied that Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) and Phil Bardsley‘s (£4.4m) inclusions at left-back and right-back respectively were merited on performance:

We’ve been trying to monitor the workload of the players, equally monitoring the ones who have laid down a little bit of a marker and done well.

Ben Mee (£5.0m) struggled against Romelu Lukaku, meanwhile, not getting close enough to the Belgian forward for either of his goals and perhaps being fortunate not to concede a penalty when lunging at the United striker in the second half.

Mee could soon find his place in jeopardy from Kevin Long (£4.3m) or Ben Gibson (£4.9m), the latter having missed the defeat to the Red Devils with a stomach problem.

With such doubt over personnel and a lack of confidence in the backline as a whole, Burnley’s defenders are not quite the attractive proposition they ought to be for this run of matches between Gameweeks 5 and 8.

The all-important goals conceded column aside, though, are Dyche’s side statistically performing any worse than they were in 2017/18? Members can read on for our assessment of the Clarets’ defence.

I agree - this applies to most Salah-less teams. I can;t really work out where the money has gone and you're missing the most consistent captain option for not a huge amount of upside.

I think if you have a budget you squeeze out the best - Fraser, Ings, Mitro, playing cheapies etc ... the extra for Pedro, Wally or Lucas over Fraser or Laca over Mitro doesn’t look anything special imho

True. Sorry about that lol. Main issue is in midfield. Have Salah, Mane, Pedro and 4th mid is realistically Ramsey or Dilva tbh.

    Afternoon all,

    Would really appreciate some advice on what to do with this team;

    Ederson (Hamer)
    Shaw Mendy Robertson Wan-Bisakka Boly
    Salah Mane Walcott Mkhi Cairney
    Kun Zaha Ings

Was going to do Salah & Boly to Alonso & Hazard for a -4 but I think there are more pressing issues (especially with the midfield).

    Any feedback is much appreciated!

    Thanks.

All depends on your team and how many fires you need to put out. Personally if I was doing -12 or more in hits I’d activate it.

I don't really think there's such a thing as too early. There's more risk playing the wildcard this early because it's gone and you can't use it to get yourself out of a sticky situation later. But there's also potentially more reward as you'll be able to have your new players for longer and have more chances to reap the benefits.

    5. Pooodle
      • 15 Years
      5 years, 9 months ago

I only like to play my wildcard if my team is a mess and I want to change some of my heavy hitters. Don't think it's worth it if you're mainly replacing bench players or your cheapest players in the starting 11.

I'd take a -8 before wildcarding. Seen some really strange wildcard decisions on here. They seem to be underrated , we 4 games in...it's just the start. Patience is key

I think you could talk me into AWB if Tomkins is fit, but I'd probably just go with Mitrovic. Manchester City haven't shown ironclad defensive focus and seem to usually concede a couple of real chances.

I've been wondering something similar myself. But really it seems like FPL needs a new way to classify players. So many teams are now playing with three forwards that there would barely be any decent midfielders in the game.

Ok, what to do with this lot? Decent start with 296 points and placed around 13,5k.

    McCarthy
    Mendy - Robertson - Alonso
    Neves - Salah - Mané - B.Silva - Mkhitaryan
    Agüero - Tosun

    Bench: Hamer, Bissaka, Kamara, Peltier.

    0.4M ITB, 1FT.

Hate hits.. Still have WC intact, but don't want to use it yet. My initial thought by looking at my team is taking a hit now and another one before next GW:
GW5: B.Silva and Mkhi to Fraser and D.Silva. (Unless there are signs that B.Silva are guaranteed to start)
GW6: Tosun and Neves to Wilson and Richarlison.

    Thoughts?

    1. Jasօn
      • 11 Years

I don't like Tosun/ Neves / Mkhi or even the certainty of b.silva.

I actually had similar problems on mine and hit WC

      1. Fantasyamateur
        • 9 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

Yeah, agreed. However I feel it's not enough for WC.. Neves and Tosun both with decent fixtures for next GW. But B.Silva and especially Mkhi is troublesome if they are not sure starters anymore..

        1. Pooodle
          • 15 Years
          5 years, 9 months ago

I think with the fixtures it's worth riding out and maybe wildcarding GW6 depending on how you feel then.

    2. Pooodle
      • 15 Years
      5 years, 9 months ago

Decent-ish starting 11 and I agree you probably don't need to wildcard but I reckon there's a good chance both Silva and Mkhi come into their teams next weekend if you buy into the theory that they were rested/rotated rather than simply dropped.

      1. Fantasyamateur
        • 9 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

I'm quite confident Mkhi was dropped as he was sh*t against West Ham and only got 1 minute the last game. B.Silva is a worrying case as well. Subbed off at 63 against Wolves needing a goal, and benched at home to Newcastle..

          • 15 Years

I think I'm just an overly optimistic Silva owner hoping he starts at home to Fulham... then he's pretty much certainly on his way for me.

Haha, I am hoping as well! But not too sure.. D.Silva's numbers has been immense as well, so it is tempting, even if it's a "sideways" hit.

That's a fair point - D Silva should outscore him you would think. I'm keeping him really just to avoid the hit.

Does anyone even have any Burnley players at the minute?!

    Start one.

    A) VVD (tot)
    B) Bennet (BUR)
    C) Wan-B (hud)

I'd be tempted with A in case Liverpool put in a great performance as VVD could be on for bonus as well as a clean sheet then.

Better use of -4 for the next GWs:

    A) Robbo + Groß -> Doherty + Dilva
    B) Pereira + Groß -> Rico + Ramsey

Already have Agüero as City attacking cover but no Arsenal

Don't really like ditching any of those players for a hit.

Well, I really want to get rid of Groß, but don't see a viable straight swap with nothing itb. Lingard? I honestly think Ramsey could be a great differential. Dilva is just a safer pick. At least, who is better out of Doherty and Rico for fixtures plus attacking returns?

Hard to fit in given everyone had opted for the premium defenders and 2 x 4m options

    Hi Guys !
    Would you do Zaha-Walcott-Eriksen to Mitrovic-Fraser-Hazard for -4? Y/N ?

      My squad

      Fabianski/Patricio
      Robertson/Mendy/Pereira/Wan-Bis/Bednarek
      Salah/Eriksen/Costa/Walcott/B.Silva
      Aguero/Zaha/King

If Zaha and Wally are fit, I can backfire imo with -4

If Zaha and Wally are fit, would you swap BSilva to Pedro or Lucas?

    Thoughts on this WC

    Patricio (Ryan)
    Alonso, Mendy, Holebas (Cedric, Wan-Bissaka)
    Hazard, Mané, Pedro, Neves (Billing)
    Aguero, Lukaku, Wilson

Pedro and Wilson could become Richa and Mitro in 2 GW

Have almost same starting XI, so I think its good.
Currently Maddison and Schurrle over Pedro and Neves.
      And Shaw over Holebas.
