Live Hall of Fame update – Grant Barclay is our new number one

The international break has given us the chance to analyse our recently updated Live Hall of Fame – and analyse the strategies of those managers who feature in the top ten.

This ranking system is applied to everyone who takes part in either of our Fantasy Premier League mini-leagues (free or members), with managers’ performances over the seasons then tracked to give a Hall of Fame (HoF) rating.

The live version has been updated to take into account Gameweek 4’s results and can be viewed by Members via this link.

Further information on the FFS Hall of Hame is included at the bottom of this article, but alternatively, you can view this movie to listen to our very own Mark and Rate My Team’s Chris Atkinson discuss the feature.

The career version, which shows the standings at the end of last season, is free to view here or via the HoF tab on the home page.

The Updated Top Ten

Not only do we have four new entrants in the top ten from the standings listed at the end of 2017/18, but we also have a new leader.

Grant Barclay is our new number one, deposing Career Hall of Fame front-runner Jay Egersdorff from top spot.

Grant has three top 1,000 finishes and a further seven inside the top 10k, with his best overall rank being 105 in 2016/17.

Jay falls to third, with his current overall rank of 691,177 costing him first place.

Like Grant, Jay has three top 1,000 finishes to his name, with two just outside the top 100 in 2009/10 and 2016/17.

Matthew Jones sits comfortably inside the top 50k after Gameweek 4 and rises to second place as a result. There is a common theme developing with our podium places: Matthew has three top 1,000 finishes in nine seasons as an FPL manager.

Marlen Rattiner is a non-mover at four, after a solid start to 2018/19: Marlen can boast four overall ranks inside the top 1k, with his best “OR” being 194 in 2014/15.

Richard Clarke and Owen Walker are the other two FPL managers to remain in our Live HoF top ten from the Career table compiled at the end of 2017/18, sitting in fifth and ninth place respectively.

Owen is a relative newcomer to the game, but has an impressive three top 1k finishes in just six seasons of competing.

Richard, meanwhile, is a high-performing veteran of some 12 years, with two top 1,000 finishes to his name during that period.

The four entries into the top ten have, of course, had excellent starts to this campaign.

Kenneth Tang, The Magician (aka TorresMagic) and Bruce Savage all sit in the top 20,000 after Gameweek 4.

Kenneth has an enviable five top 1,000 finishes in 12 years of recorded data, while price rise king TorresMagic has six overall ranks inside the top 3,000 in ten seasons – two of them inside the top 1k.

Bruce meanwhile can boast the best finish of any of our top ten: 54th place in 2009/10.

Paul Godson has had the best start to this season of any of the above managers, currently sitting in 4,361st place overall. Paul, like so many of his fellow elite managers, also has three top 1k ranks to his name.

The legends that are Paul Gee (last year’s runner-up) and Ville Ronka slip out of our top ten despite fair starts to this season, while the 2018/19 ranks of Lester Cheng and a certain Mark Sutherns – both currently sitting outside the top one million – have also come at the expense of their places in the top ten.

A special mention to Stephen Harrap, in 20th place in our Live HoF, who currently sits in 255th place in the world.

Top Ten – Strategies and Teams in 2018/19

Two of our Live HoF top ten have played their Wildcards already: Owen in Gameweek 3 and Jay in Gameweek 4. The rest, including all of the above managers currently sitting in the top 100k, have held their Wildcards back – though there remains the possibility of this chip being used during the international break.

At the time of writing, none of our top ten has made a transfer for Gameweek 5 – though any Wildcard deployment would, of course, be hidden from view.

Unsurprisingly, no other chips have been used by the ten managers in question.

Marlen and The Magician (headlining the John Peel Stage next year) are the only two of the aforementioned managers to take a transfer hit this season, meanwhile.

All ten of our managers captained Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) in Gameweek 4, while all bar Jay and Grant own both Sadio Mane (£10.0m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) – the Senegalese midfielder is  missing from their 15-man squads, with Jay selling him on his Gameweek 4 Wildcard.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.1m), Benjamin Mendy (£6.4m) and Andrew Robertson (£6.1m) feature in all ten of these squads, though Marcos Alonso (£6.8m) has surprisingly been overlooked by five of our elite FPL managers.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan‘s (£7.2m) “one-pointer” at Cardiff was bad news for seven of our featured Fantasy bosses, while six were affected by Wilfried Zaha‘s (£7.0m) non-appearance at Selhurst Park last Saturday.

Half of our managers made the Richarlison (£6.6m) to Theo Walcott (£6.8m) transfer for Gameweek 4, though Owen and Kenneth are sitting on Everton’s Brazilian midfielder for the time being.

Bruce and Marlen – both of whom own David de Gea (£5.9m) – are the only two managers who have opted for a premium goalkeeper this season.

The maverick picks are few and far between, though Grant does own David Luiz (£5.5m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£9.4m) – both of whom excelled for him in Gameweek 4.

Further analysis of our Live HoF’s teams and strategies will follow during the season.

Hall of Fame FAQ

How is my rating calculated?
The “HoF Rating” is based on your points scores from previous FPL seasons, with the latest season weighted the heaviest and each corresponding season weighted at roughly 80% that of the previous season. So, in other words, those who performed best in 2017/18 will receive a bigger HoF Rating boost from those who did best in 2007/08. The “HoF Ranking” even allows for those with missing years, adapting the formula accordingly to allow to rank alongside the veterans of the FPL.

How do I join the Hall of Fame
Simply sign up to our leagues next season, either the Fantasy Football Scout Classic League or if you’re a member, the Members Classic League – the code is available on the dashboard of the Members Area.

How do I find myself in the Hall of Fame?
The search box at the top of the ranking tables allows you to search by surname or by FPL id.

What if I don’t want to be listed?
Either notify us via support@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk or simply leave the Fantasy Football Scout league and you’ll be removed on the next update.

When does the Hall of Fame get updated?
The Career table is available to all and is updated at the end of each season to display the latest rankings. The Live version of the Hall of Fame is updated throughout the season to reflect the scores of the current campaign.

    Hey there DZ,
Double City defence, it hasnt really worked out so far its fair to say! Also its the first time in recent seasons that Ive gone with a premium keeper and kind of regretting it already!
Is patience the key, do you feel it will come good in upcoming GWs?
Thoughts on doubling up at the back?

Do you have the Ederson-Mendy combo at the back?

If yes, I would reckon you get rid of Ederson. Not because I think City won't be keeping clean sheets but because he takes up one of your 3 City slots. And you're gonna need 2 City attackers + Mendy sooner rather than later.

Don't agree. I'm fully committed to my Ederson/Mendy combo as a season keeper. I'm confident plenty of clean sheets are to come, and I also expect plenty of rotation in midfield. Nothing has changed.

Yeah, want to commit to it also. The City midfield is a minefield. Not as confident as you though about 'plenty of clean sheets are to come'. Hopefully you're right! GL

It's a quality defence they've got there - they just haven't got into their stride yet, partly because Kompany has become too slow and needs dropping. Ederson won't be the top-scoring goalkeeper because he won't get the most save points, but he's 100% nailed, and I can't be sure who this season's 4.5 Fabianski will turn out to be. Mendy is, of course, an assist-machine.

Agree, that is the problem, no real obvious set and forget 4.5 GK and I hate the idea of rotating keepers! Mendy is a beast, so glad that I took the put to start the season with him, FPL gold!

Right, that's the essence of my point. If there were 3 fire-n-forget outfield options, I'd be all over them whatever the price - could well have been Mendy, Kun and Kevin in fact. As it is Mendy and Kun are the only 2 (bar the likes of non-FPL viable Fernandinho and maybe Laporte) who are nailed, so Ederson isn't blocking a third option - for now.

Don't see the need for another City player myself. If I did drop Ederson, I would just stick with double City (Mendy + Aguero). It could change of course, cheers!

4 out of the top 10 scoring mids last season were from Man City.

Kun had the best PPG among all forwards in the game.

This year, you have Mendy too who's looking like an absolute beast.

If you don't see the need for another City outfield player yet, we're gonna see it soon.

You're right, but we can't see at this point if it'll be Sterling, Dilva or who. If it becomes apparent further down the line, it can be fixed with 2FT.

Yep, further down the line not at this point.

But again, spending FTs on a keeper just to accommodate an outfield player doesn't sound right.

Each one of us on our own tho and you have a fair point too.

City seemed much more settled last year though, I think there is much more doubt about the starting 11 this year.

I am Kun, Ederson & Mendy at the moment but will switch Mendy to KdB in time

Yes, I'm talking about that man KDB 🙂

And Dilva until KDB is back, baldie's underlying stats have been fantastic so far, it's only a matter of time before it translates to points.

Dilva does look like the man of the moment, but have we all forgotten Pep's comment pre-season about 'managing Silva's minutes'?

Yet he has started every game that he has been available for 🙂

Think he needs Dilva's influence anyway until KDB is back. And at that price of Dilva, I won't mind an odd benching here and there even after KDB is back.

Well the "managing" will likely be around Champers League games, which aren't many GWs away now.

Before the season, simply intimated that at his age he hasn’t the legs for a full season and needs to be managed ... wouldn’t be surprised if Silva is spending a bit more time with family rather than fitness training

Keep faith for now. Ederson trolled me last year too though. Brought him in after city kept 3 clean sheets in a row. Had him for 6 weeks and got 1 clean sheet. I dropped him and he got three clean sheets in a row, including a penalty save in the Arsenal game (the first game after I dropped him)

You can get TAA instead of Robbo (tho I would personally avoid Pool defence if on a WC) and go with Richarlison + Fraser + Holebas/4.5

Cheers Natkhat! Liverpool have the best defense in the PL so far... but I am seeing a lot of FPL managers ditching Pool defense because of the fixtures/congestion. I wonder if this will workout. Thanks mate..

I'm the one who had double Pool defence when plenty here were against the idea 😉 and it worked out really well.

I sold one before the Leicester game and currently own TAA. I think owning the right players at the right time is extremely important and in the short term Pool def doesn't look like the best investment, especially if on a WC.

A Wildcard now will need to keep you going for about 30 GWs, so a couple of tricky Pool fixtures shouldn't be a consideration. I don't think Watford will be sustainable.

Pretty good. My only issues here are a double-Palace defence (for me I got AWB since the beginning and he'll do) and Wally who'll you'll prolly switch for Richy when he's back.

Personally I feel Lucozade will turn out to be better value than Auba, but I'm not having either.

Yep, PVA is the one on the chopping block for me!
Auba will get a few more games then I'll reassess. Wally to Rich looks likely barring other issues.

Morning Ladies. Care to give your thoughts on my wildcard?

    Pat Hamer
    Alonso Mendy Yedlin Bennett WB
    Salah Haz Lingard Schurrle 4.5
    Kun Laca Jimenez

    - WB and Bennett cover fixtures now and Yedlin later so I'm hoping to not change my D
    - I really want Lukaku but can't get him without sacrificing Haz
    - I see amazing value in Schurrle and Jimenez
    - The idea is to play with my 5 spots that is Haz Salah Lingard Kun Laca if I need cash for Kane, Kaku, Alli etc. Which is why I'm trying to find a lot of value in my other positions

Gks: would explore a Pat/Foster rot.
      Ds: No Robbo a concern
Milfs: two heavy hitters but a little lightweight. I'd have Mane still regardless of fixtures.
      Fwds: how reliable is Laca?

My main beef is ignoring Liverpud come back and bite you in the bum.

Think Lateriser is right to skip both Mane and Robbo with those coming fixtures but not sure about Laca! Can always come back to pool players after City fixture.
I like Lingard to start scoring soon with his pace in advanced role.

Newcastle have 4 centre backs all of equal standing ... wouldn’t go for Yedlin

Two 4.0 defenders is a risk not worth taking, they maybe be starting now but who knows in the future and they are hard to transfer out easily

Laca has started one game so far, Lingard is hardly nailed, Schurrle has not completed a full 90 mins yet so may lack minutes on the pitch ...

I think two premium forwards with Salah and Hazard is has sucked up too much cash

Your existing team has Pat Hamer
              Alonso Mendy
              Salah Haz Mkhi Walcott
              Kun Firmino

You are effectively doing Mkhi, Walcott and Firmino to Schurrle, Lingard and Laca, which doesn’t seem better in the long term ... and then you are just shuffling the dross around to new shinier dross 😉

I think you could do much better imho 🙂

    Hi all,

Bit of a dilemma.. with Shaw off injured last night after a superb assist, Zaha & Walcott in. Would you WC? On 278 points & doing okay

    Really looking at getting Alonso

    Ederson
    Mendy, Robertson, Shaw
    Salah, Walcott, Madison, Hazard
    Mitrovic, Aguero, Zaha

Non playing 4m; WanB, Hudson-Odoi, Bednarek

    Current transfer plan for injured players;
    Zaha -> Wilson
    Walcott-> Neves
    Shaw -> Alonso

Other slots I’ll fill with playing bench players

    Thoughts will be appreciated

Zaha and Walcott might be fit. Definitely wouldn’t WC that

    Salah Aguero Lacazette
    Mendy Alonso Robertson
is enough cover of premium players?

Other three 6M+ are Pedro Bilva and King.

Looks a bit light to me. Need to see Laca starting a few more games before deciding on him.

I feel he will score points off the bench. More involved than Auba this season

Can you squeeze in Hazard in lieu of Lacazette?

Checked the possibility of Bilva to Haz and downgrade Laca but only 3.5M left for a striker

I guess I'm the only one sticking captain to Salah?

FYI: RMT Tool is recommending, in order: Hazard, Aguero and then Salah.

I'll probably captain Hazard but could play it safe as most will captain Aguero

Aguero for me this GW. Not ready to trust Hazard just yet, but he’s my VC.

      Set armband on Alonso.
I have tried to do this last season but changed out of fear.

Hope this time he will make me proud

He'll come good surely. I'd probably play ahead of Walcott anyway TBH

Jota's stats are really bad. I was surprised, actually, but they are.

There's no timescale or public diagnosis. Will find out more at presser, but I'll be surprised if he features next w/e tbh.

Good morning, any opinions regarding this WC team other than being templatish 🙂 ?

    Ederson
    Alonso, Mendy, Robertson
    Hazard, Mane, Maddison, Moura
    Aguero, Mitrovic, Wilson

    Hamer, Holebas, Wan-Bissa, Billing + 0.7 ITB

The issues which I'm still not completely setteled on are:

    1) Should I go for Ederson + Hamer or two rotating keepers? If so which ones?

    2) Should I go for Pedro / Ramsey instead of Lucas Moura? Assuming I'll probably bring in Richarlison soon

Salah is the biggest issue but you know the risks. Moura could be dropped soon for Son. Pedro is in competition with Willian and Emery still doesn’t know his best XI at Arsenal. Richo is the nailed one when he returns

Yes I know, which is why my question was aimed just for the upcoming 1-2 gameweeks

        Moura or Pedro or Ramsey?

Would two rotating 4.5 GKs give you funds for Moura > David Silva?

Yes, I'll have exactly 8.5 m in order to get him... Are his underlying stats that great?

It will leave me though with no way of bringing Richarlison down the road or making any changes that require a bit of cash

D and f similar to mine
How about watford pereyra? Can do wonders from gw8 onwards
      1. Two 4.5s. Not sure which two though
      2. I would put richarlison in to save transfer

I have to get rid of Bellerin(5.4) from my team.

I have 4 possible replacements in mind - Chilwell (5.0) , Perriera (5.1) , Holebas (4.8) and Cook (4.6). Which one to go for and why ?

Here's my team. I'm fairly happy with it but 50/50 on Salah/No Salah

    What do you think?

    Fabianski/Foster
    Robbo/Alonso/Mendy/WB/Dunk
    Salah/Mane/Pererya/Neves/Kante
    Aguero/Arnautovic/Mitrovic

Used no chips and have 298 points.
