FPL Question Time – Hazard, defence strategy and Mkhitaryan replacements

It’s a Scoutcast special of FPL Question Time this week as three very familiar names share their insights into the “trending” discussion points ahead of Gameweek 5.

As ever we were inundated with requests for our panel, so we’ve taken three of the most popular subjects and asked our trio of Fantasy doyens questions around those recurring themes.

Eden Hazard‘s name repeatedly cropped up, as did Pedro‘s – so both of these Chelsea midfielders are covered in the posers to our panel below.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan‘s one-minute cameo in Gameweek 4 was the source of much frustration for his Fantasy owners and the basis for several of our site users’ questions about mid-price replacements for the Arsenal man.

With the UEFA Champions League looming on the horizon, we’ve also pondered whether premium defender rotation should start to enter our thinking.

Unfortunately, we can only ask our panel a handful of questions each week but we very much appreciate all the requests and encourage you to keep your queries coming in throughout the season.

Anyone who regularly tunes in to our weekly Scoutcast will need little introduction to this week’s panel, but for the uninitiated, they are:

  • Andy – the creator of the excellent YouTube channel Let’s Talk FPL, who has six top 25k finishes (two inside the top 10,000) to his name in eight seasons of playing FPL.
  • Az – another well-known name on Twitter and beyond, who cracked the top 1k in 2017/18 (finishing with an enviable overall rank of 817) after previously having recorded two finishes inside the top 5,000.
  • Joe – the host of our Scoutcast – plus many other weekly videos – and who sits 79th in our Career Hall of Fame, having recorded seven top 10,000 finishes in ten seasons of playing FPL (including an “OR” of 840 in 2013/14).

Question One – Andy

Q. How essential is Eden Hazard given the upcoming stretch of fixtures/rotation for Champions League-involved premium midfielders? Is it worth a hit to get him in now?

Andy: “Essential is a term that gets thrown around a lot in FPL circles but often doesn’t deserve to be used.

“I think that’s the case with Eden Hazard. Does he look like a good option? Absolutely. Is he essential at £10.7m with so many other options to fit in? I’d argue not.

“Take David Silva for example. The Spaniard has played a very similar amount of minutes to Hazard, created three more chances, had two more shots in the box and the same amount of penalty area touches. All that for £2.2m less.

“We could see some rotation in the Champions League but I think this is often something we overthink as FPL managers. At most you’re probably likely to see the first XI players rested for one game, but not two or three in a short space of time.

“There’s no guarantee that Hazard himself won’t play in the Europa League and could see his minutes reduced in the Premier League. We will have to see how Maurizio Sarri views the Europa League versus concentrating on the Premier League itself.

“There’s no doubting that with penalties in his locker, an attack-minded manager to set him free, and his general footballing talent that he’ll score points and will do well over the coming fixtures. To answer the question though, I don’t see him as essential just yet and I’m not convinced he’s worth the hit in most cases.”

Question Two – Joe

Q. Is there a case for switching to budget, reliable defensive options who play week-in, week-out now that rotation of the premium defenders looms on the horizon? Or would you rather stick with the premiums and navigate the rough waters of rotation?

Joe: “With compass in hand I’m ready to navigate the choppy seas of rotation with this season’s three premium defensive sensations at my side, Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson, Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso and Benjamin Mendy of Manchester City.

“Why would I ditch one of a trio that so far this season have returned points in all four of their fixtures, accumulating an eye-popping 108 points between them? For less than £7.0m each that represents a return on investment that Fantasy Premier League managers dream of.

“Of the three it is perhaps Robertson who is most at risk as the Reds face a daunting September run that takes in Spurs, Southampton and Chelsea in the League, the Blues again in the League Cup and Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. The Saints game or the Chelsea cup game look the most likely times for him to miss out.

“But I’m willing to wager that if dropped for Champions League or Europa League action that all of this trio are likely to earn a full rest. So for me, the question is not, should we jettison good players because they may miss the odd game, but should we make sure we have a strong bench to cope?

“I have three playable bench assets ready for the coming threat of rotation. In fact, I almost welcome it as I gaze at the 16 points from Willy Boly over the last two weeks firmly nailed to my bench.”

Question Three – Az

Q. Who is the best Henrikh Mkhitaryan replacement? I’m looking at Pedro for his amazing stats and how direct he is, but Willian is making this move really tough.

Az: “It wouldn’t be possible to talk about sub-£7.0m options without mentioning Pedro. He has three goals in four games, plays for an unbeaten Chelsea side and has Cardiff and West Ham in the next two games. You’re right that he’s very direct and his stats are pretty decent for his price – the trouble is, will he play enough to be involved in enough goals?

“A lack of certainty of starts is the exact reason you are looking to shift Mkhitaryan after all, so you are potentially using a transfer to give yourself the same headache. The difference is, however, that while Mkhitaryan’s stock seems to be on the wane with the incredible performance of Lacazette, Pedro’s brief, goalscoring cameo against Bournemouth surely suggests that he will get the start against the Bluebirds.

“I actually think, despite some reservations about Pedro’s game-time, the lack of real options in the sub-£7.0m bracket make him one of the ideal replacements – particularly if you are keeping your wildcard to use in the next few weeks when the fixtures toughen up for Chelsea and you’d be looking to move him on anyway.

“It would be typical of Willian though if he ruins Pedro’s FPL appeal by coming on for him – or starting in his place again – especially as I am considering making the switch; as if the Brazilian needed any more reasons to prove what a broken cog he is in the FPL wheel.

“I say that Pedro is ‘one’ of the ideal replacements for Mkhitaryan because I also think people are still overlooking James Maddison. His ownership remains at 3.2%, and yes, I am a bit of Maddison fan-boy, but for me, he is the type of player that FPL is all about. Incredibly involved in the attacking phases and at set-piece situations, he is looking more and more like the talisman of Leicester that I hope he’d be when I started the season with him.

“His next four fixtures – Bournemouth (a), Huddersfield (h), Newcastle (a), Everton (h) – to me, could not be better. I am as sure as you can be in FPL that in one of those games, he is going to get a double-digit score and the bandwagon will be in full force.

“He’s been pretty ‘lucky’ in terms of returns so far, with a deflected goal and a very fortunate assist, but he passes the eye test whenever I watch Leicester play and looks like he is really settling into the Premier League. I’m expecting big things from him in the coming weeks.”

    What's the hoo-ha with Zaha.

I don't think I recall so much excitement and interest around such a mediocre FPL asset. Even adjusted for minutes he's getting utterly beasted by Ings, Mitro, Wilson, Even Arnie is smashing his stats and Glen Murray has a better Xgi/minute. I'm on a wildcard, and I'm genuinely interested, am I missing something here?

Totally agree. Utterly average player with very poor FPL record before he became average.

Pretty small sample size to be looking at xG especially when one of the games was against Liverpool.

He has passed the eye test so far. I have him and will keep him if fit, but if I were on a WC I’d get Mitrovic, Wilson and Ings over him probably.

I think I'm going with Mitro and Wilson unless someone convinces otherwise. He may have netted twice but the underlying stats are fairly poor

Zahas value doesn't come from exposiveness, but consistency. Theoretically he should be involved in a lot of palace goals and I think he'll provide the 5-7 points relatively consistently with the odd double digit haul. Not a bargain but not a bad asset

Theoretically he should be, but his stats show him to be worse than almost all other viable strikers, several of whom are cheaper

CPL have a solid midfield with people like Meyer and Milivo who can pick out a good pass, although benteke is definitely a worry

He's pretty frustrating to own overall, I agree. He's a talisman in pure football terms for Palace, but not in the FPL way of being a points magnet in the same way that, for example, Gross was last year for Brighton.

Owned him last season after my GW12 wildcard, right up to and including GW19.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek was on my bench for that entire period as well, and out-scored Zaha across that period. Don't think I've forgiven that yet, to be honest.

      Games were:
      Palace 2 - Everton 2. 1 goal scored/ No bonus.
      Palace 2 - Stoke 1. no returns.
Brighton 0 - Palace 0. no returns (1 cs point).
WBA 0 - Palace 0. no returns (1 cs point).
      Palace 2 - Bournemouth 2. 1 assist. 1 YC. No bonus.
      Palace 2 - Watford 1. 1 assist. No bonus.
Leicester 0 - Palace 3. 1 goal scored - think he scraped 1 bonus point in this one.
      Swansea 1 - Palace 1. 1 YC, no returns.

2 goals, 2 assists, 2 yellow cards - and 1 bonus point across 8 favourable fixtures (if I've remembered all that right).

You could argue this was a Palace side still finding their feet under Hodgson after a tough start under FDB - But the same issues remain for WZ so far this season. Two goals, and just as many yellow cards, which effectively mean he's returned FPL points equivalent to 2 assists in 4 games.

Lovely player to watch, and I'm a huge fan of his. But not in FPL - and given Mitrovic / Wilson's emergence, it's an easy 'leave' for me.

you're comparing over too short a period, try looking at the whole of last season.

The problem is that you are comparing him with players that have unsustainable stats over a small sample. Theres simply no way players like Wilson and Mitrovic have suddenly become good enough to sustain the stats they are posting at this time over the rest of the season or even over the next 2-3 games.

I understand statistics and I'm not attempting to extrapolate. Fantasy football is not a science and really it's fairly pointless attempting to find at a glance significance in pretty much any set of data because you'd have to be controlling for dozens of extraneous variables. But anecdotally, if we take a glance and try to get a bit of an impression, Wilf's stats are basically crap

Brosstan, Wilson, Ings, Deeney, Mitro etc these players are not scoring ludicrously, they're just being served well and playing well themselves. There's no reason whatsoever they can't maintain this form across 2-3 weeks. You wouldn't avoid picking a player using the argument that statistically it's unlikely this could go on indefinitely, would you. Pick the form players with the good team and individual stats. Zaha doesn't have those

Farcical? Mkhi never played his last game. Not taking a gamble on a potential cameo from the bench.
Spurs is a tough game irrespective of Liverpools form v top 6 teams
So WanB has a decent chance of a CS.

So... Pulled the WC trigger almost as soon as this International Break started.
Had a collection of flags and players about to hit more testing fixtures.
    Currently on this :-

    Ederson / 4.0
    Mendy / Chilwell / WanB / TAA / Holebas
    Salah / Haz / Fraser / Maddison / Neves
    Zaha / Kun / Ings

Have 0.7ITB too with a view of Maddison to Richarlison at some point.
Have also considered a Ings/Fraser/Neves > Schurrle/Wilson/5.0 but that swallows up all the cash.
    Feels better balanced as is.
However, having downgraded Robbo it feels a bit bare at the back? Worth doing a 4.5/4.5 keeper and using the extra to upgrade one of the defenders???

They failed to score in their 2 home games this season (vs Chelsea and Cardiff).
Last season nobody averaged less goals at home (0.84 - tied with Burnley).
Last season nobody failed to score in more home games in the league (8 - tied with Swansea).
So if Tomkins is back, why do you trust HUD to score at home against CPL?

I am already on 85% "no" in answer to this question, but I'd like to hear people's thoughts. Would if be worth a hit to sell any of these players?

            A) Pedro > 7.7m
            B) Mkhitaryan > 8.2m
            C) Bernado > 8.6m

On the bench I have AWB as my first sub, TAA second, but I think I'd rather play A, B and C over these two. So the question is whether a 7.7-8.6m mid is likely to outdo of these players by at least 4 points this week (or over the course of a couple of weeks, I guess).

Stats look better for D than B, so would expect to make up the 4 points in 1-5 weeks, whatever it is, quite easily. Well, maybe not expect, but it seems likely. If Bilva is still a doubt at the end of the week, I'll make the switch. But otherwise, I'm happy to keep the money ITB for the freedom of the choice to sell any of the above players, or even 2 for a hit, with the freedom of how to spread the cash. That is my plan. I will have to do it either now for -4 or probably later for -4, so I prefer improving my squad rather earlier than later.

A Silva Swap of Bernardo --> David has been tempting me recently but I can't convince myself it's worth a -4. Bench is good enough to avoid doing a hit imo.

Cheers. Although as La Roja says, the bench is unlikely to be involved, so I'm not really factoring them into my decision. The bench is for no-shows and longer-term injuries (missing 1-2 weeks), which I'm not expecting from A, B or C. So the question is more about how to get more points from the starting XI than protection against no-shows.

There is a very strong case for Dilva and Bilva is injury concern and serious 1 pt cameo possibility. Dilva is bargain now with KdB injured, wife and son Mateo(!) at least were in UK watching him play, excellent underlying stats, passed the eye test and was only unlucky not to get points in last match. He was dangerous. Add to that his ppm last year.

I want to be able to look at the mirror and smile after next match. And he is anyway much better medium term option than Bilva.

my plan is -4 or -8.
                  If i go -8 i'm going Haz+Fraser
                  -4 get me Pedro+Fraser 😉

maddison in place if my crush on both evades 😉

If you are going to take big hits (≥ 8) then this time of the season is when to do it. Set your team up with the right players and move up the keague.

But are you sure that they are "the right players"?

              You’re probably right.

Mitro top of transfers in. Missed pen and red card?

Top of transfers in never do anything good the following game in my experience. If it means a City CS, thats alright - but please Mitro, dont get sent off!

I will bench Mitro and start Ings.

Only caveat is I have two City « defs » (Ederson and Mendy). Tempted to start Mitro only because if Fulham ruins the City CS, he will prob be involved. Would hate to bench him and see him start and score (and ruin my double City CS).

Should I ditch Mkhytarian and take a hit, or can I risk keeping him so I can make the transfers that would allow me to get Mane in the upcoming gameweek?

Another way of saying it: are we certain that Emery will not play Mkhi against Newcastle?

If I thought he would score more points. Its likely if Tomkins is back. HUD are awful

I have too many of them for sure.

If Tomkins is out I will swap him out but otherwise might do bilva to Fraser to free up cash.

Do you guys think Trippier will be used in Champions league games and Aurier in the Prem?

Not as clear cut as that.

If anything I think aurier might see more cl action but it is guesswork.

yea, would like Trippier for Spurs fixtures after Liverpool but he's a rotation risk
