FPL Gameweek 5 – Team News Round-up

Uncertainty still surrounds the availability of several widely owned Fantasy Premier League assets this evening, with the Thursday and Friday press conferences not providing the unambiguous injury updates we had yearned for.

The 9% of FPL managers who own Luke Shaw (£5.1m) have had a rollercoaster week with one media report contradicting the other regarding his recovery from a concussion, and Friday was no different.

Jose Mourinho had effectively given Shaw the all-clear in his press conference earlier today, stating that the Manchester United medical department had declared him available for selection.

Mourinho himself, however, said that he “didn’t know” whether he would pick Shaw for the trip to Vicarage Road tomorrow and reports in the press this afternoon suggested the England full-back was not with the travelling party heading to Watford.

Those FPL bosses sitting on Ryan Fraser (£5.6m), Theo Walcott (£6.7m) and Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) also face a nervous wait once the Gameweek 5 deadline passes, with little clear-cut information being offered by their respective club managers in the press gatherings today and yesterday.

Fraser picked up a hamstring injury while on duty with the Scottish national team over the international break and wasn’t pictured in training as of Wednesday this week.

Eddie Howe said Fraser was a concern for Saturday, though had been working with the club’s medical team in a bid to recover. Charlie Daniels (£4.5m) meanwhile hasn’t trained with the Cherries all week and is a big doubt for the visit of Leicester City.

Walcott and Zaha, at least, have been training with their respective clubs, though Roy Hodgson and Marco Silva stopped short of declaring their players 100% fit ahead of the weekend.

Silva claimed Walcott was “in contention” to play, while Hodgson said on Thursday that he would make a late decision on whether Zaha and James Tomkins (£4.4m) would feature against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Everton’s injury crisis at least shows signs of abating, with Bernard (£5.9m) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.4m) now available for selection – though Seamus Coleman (£5.4m) will be out for “one or two weeks”.

There was mixed news for three other England players injured before or during the international break, with Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) declared fit by Pep Guardiola earlier today but Dele Alli (£9.1m) and Adam Lallana (£6.9m) ruled out by their respective managers.

Mauricio Pochettino also confirmed that Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) would be out for “several weeks” with a thigh injury.

There was little to report concerning Chelsea’s likely starting XI against Cardiff City tomorrow, though Maurizio Sarri did suggest that Cesc Fabregas (£6.3m) may be fit enough for a place on the bench at Stamford Bridge.

Unai Emery’s press conference on Thursday was also thin on injury updates, though the Arsenal manager was quick to rubbish any rumours of a tiff with Mesut Ozil (£8.3m) – speculation that owners of Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.2m) might have hoped was true.

Arsenal are up against Newcastle United tomorrow, whose manager Rafael Benitez confirmed that Jonjo Shelvey (£5.4m) and Matt Ritchie (£5.9m) have recovered from their respective injuries to come back into contention.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.9m) and Stephen Ward (£4.9m) were declared fit to play against Wolves by Sean Dyche today, while his counterpart in the opposite dugout on Sunday – Nuno Espirito Santo – asserted that his returning international players were all “healthy”: good news for those worried about Raul Jimenez (£5.5m).

Jack Wilshere (£4.9m) was ruled out of West Ham’s trip to Everton with an ankle injury, meanwhile.

Neil Warnock was his usual loquacious self, effectively confirming that Danny Ward (a £4.5m-rated midfielder in FPL) and Bobby Reid (£5.4m) were his first-choice strike pairing for the time being.

Tom Cairney (£4.9m) remains out for Fulham, while Adama Diakhaby (£4.9m) is a minor doubt for Huddersfield. The Terriers’ goalkeeper Ben Hamer (£4.0m), however, appears to be back in contention to compete for Jonas Lossl‘s (£4.5m) starting spot.

Charlie Austin (£5.8m) and Shane Long (£4.9m) are minor doubts for Southampton, though Mark Hughes was more upbeat when discussing Danny Ings‘ (£5.6m) blister problems.

The Saints’ opponents on Monday night, Brighton, might have Florin Andone (£5.0m) – a potential threat to Glenn Murray (£6.5m) in the medium term – available for selection for the first time this season. There was no update provided by Chris Hughton about the knock picked up by Pascal Gross (£6.9m) in Gameweek 4, however.

There was little to report from Javi Gracia and Claude Puel’s pressers, though Caglar Soyuncu (£5.0m) is now fit and available for selection at centre-back for the Foxes.

Sorry for the repost, but I keep posting at the end of pages.

    Patricio, Hamer
    Alonso, Mendy, ____, Wan-Bissaka, Bennett
    Hazard, Mane, ____, Pedro, Billing
    Aguero, ____, Mitrovic

    a) Robertson, Kenedy, Lukaku
    b) Robertson, Walcott, Vardy
    c) Cedric, Maddison, Lukaku
    d) Cedric, Silva, Vardy

    - Cedric would lead to a nice, 3rd defender rotation of: BHA, NEW, wol, WOL, BOU, NEW
    - Kenedy would mean I'd always have to play a cheap defender or him pretty much; also gets a nice rotation of hud, NEW, LEI, WOL, BHA, sot

Yours is the casting vote, Andy! I'll let you claim the credit if he grabs a couple of assists v Fulham.

Looking at the Opta stats, he's far and away creating the most chances.. .and that's in 3 games over other's 4.

C, still not sold on Maddison goal threat (a lot of his goals last season were from pens) and not sure Rambo is nailed (once I get confirmation I'd be hoping to get him in too).

He was playing in an absolutely awful side and managed 15 goals ffs, hahah. 4/5 may have been pens but so? He didnt miss a single one and is on them at Leicester too so that statement is literally irrelavant

        Hey Dino!

This is really sad, but I've spent tonight researching Mkhi replacements and that included watching Maddison's 2017/18 highlights 😆 He can drop a shoulder and turn like Hazard, but doesn't seem to have a great shot on him.

Rambo's contract position worries me. He is playing in the #10 role when he does start though. That said, no goal involvement when Arsenal scored 3 vs Cardiff - bit of a concern.

          Howdy twisty mate,

Yeah I get the whole Hazard light kind of thing alright, lad above says he is on pens? can't see Vardy giving them up like that?

I've went Schurle as mikhi replacement but will probably only play him the odd game due to fulhams mixed fixtures.

Really like the Schurrle pick. Think he might be the best option < 6m. Shame they've got City this week otherwise I may have looked at him, but I've got the budget up to 8.5m leaving funds for Kamara > Mitrovic next week.

Looking like a common sentiment but C for me as well. I don't think I'll be looking to own Silva beyond the next 3-5 (despite the fact that I love him), but I can see tasty returns in that period and KDB's injury makes him less likely to get rotated for the time being I think. It's an easy downgrade to whichever of the 6-7.5 mil mids proves to be the best pick, and I don't feel like you're losing out massively on Patricio over Ederson.

    Any advice appreciated!

    Foster Fabianski
    Mendy Robertson Cedric Tomkins AWB
    Salah Mane B.Silva Mkhi Neves
    Aguero Arnie Ings

1FT, 0.1 in the bank, WC available

Have decided against brining in Alonso over the last few gameweeks, which has cost me! With at least two more good fixtures, it feels like it's not too late to get him in now. What do you reckon is best out of these options?

    A) Mkhi and Tomkins to Hojbjerg/Ward and Alonso (-4)
    B) Arnie and Robertson to Wilson and Alonso (-4)
    C) Save FT

With A, I'm not 100% ready to give up on Mkhi just yet, with B I'm reluctant to sell Robertson, and with C I still won't have Alonso!! Will probably sleep on it as I won't lose SV if Mkhi's price drops tonight.

1.0itb, am I crazy to save FT?

      Patricio
      Alonso • Mendy • TAA
      Salah • Mane • Mkhi** • Theo**
      Aguero • King • Zaha**

      Hamer • AWB • Stephens • Peltier.

I have a similar dilemma with those 3 doubts and am contemplating saving. But I really need Alonso in too though.

I would save. AWB of the bench might get you some points anyway.

I have a similar situation and I decide to put Hazard instead of Salah.

Zaha will surely play, Mkhi gets the last chance (expect around 30 minutes from him vs NEW, in best case starting XI) and Walcott keeps place for Richarlison.

AWB will cover Walcott if he doesn't play.

      Robbo > Alonso
      Mhiki > 6.3 - who?

Would be for a -4 too, is that worth it? I'm tempted to just be a maverick and go without Alonso for even longer though because nobody at 6.3 or less is tempting for this week (+ somewhat medium term) - Fraser is a doubt obv and Peryera not great with those fixtures.

I agree that 6.3 mid is less tempting. Maybe done -4 next week with 3 transfer?

      Pickford

I'd appreciate some thoughts on filling in the final few blanks:

      Patricio | Hamer
      Alonso | Mendy | Robertson | XXX | Wan-Bissaka
      Salah | Hazard | XXX | XXX | Billing
      Aguero | XXX | Ings

      A) Wilson, Silva, Schurrle, Bennett
      B) Mitro, Silva, Gray/Fraser, Bennett
      C) Mitro, Moura, Maddison, Doherty

Thanks mate. Would you throw Fraser into that mix over Gray for that spot despite his low chance of playing this week?

Both are good options with nice fixtures, I prefer Fraser but don't think he'll play so depends if you need someone to start

Thanks 🙂 Tbh I haven't focused much on the 5th mid slot. Will likely get Stephens back if he drops tonight, just for the 0.1 saving. Nailed to 3rd on my bench, but first and foremost just looking for a nailed on player (if only for 2 points).

Which option of my 3 appeals most to you?

If he is essential he’s worth -4 surely? Home against Cardiff as well, can get it back with a CS. Have Kepa as well tho, so not too keen on doubling up, but Alonso is Alonso.
