Jimenez hits Wolves’ winner but Doherty and Jonny catch the eye

Our review of the weekend’s matches continues with a look back at the Sunday lunchtime kick-off at Molineux, where Wolves defeated Burnley 1-0.

Raul Jimenez (£5.5m) scored the hosts’ winner on the hour, slotting a Matt Doherty (£4.4m) cut-back past the otherwise impressive Joe Hart (£4.5m).

Doherty and fellow Wolves wing-back Jonny (£4.4m) stood out from a Fantasy perspective, with their performances suggesting they will rack up both clean sheets and attacking returns throughout the season.

Wolves 1-0 Burnley

  • Goal: Raul Jimenez (£5.5m)
  • Assist: Matt Doherty (£4.4m)

If there were any lingering doubts that Wolves could hold their own against the Premier League elite – if Burnley can be described as such – then the dominant display that last season’s Championship winners delivered in their victory over the Clarets on Sunday would have dispelled them.

The narrow scoreline failed to reflect the West Midlands club’s almost total dominance: no club have had more attempts on goal (30) or shots in the box (20) in Gameweek 5 so far, while only Manchester City registered more big chances and penalty box touches than Wolves across the weekend’s matches.

Speaking after the match, head coach Nuno Espirito Santo said:

Creating chances is difficult, but we produced a lot. We always have to improve. We’re going to work together to find the final touch. Talent exists; organisation we work on.

We scored one and that’s the most important. After we scored there was more space. The hard part of the game is to produce, to stay organised. And it’s two times we’ve kept a clean sheet.

The most important part is the way we played, how we controlled the game. It was a good game, no doubt about it.

After promising but understandably flawed displays in their first two matches of this season, Wolves had impressed in Gameweeks 3 and 4 with a draw against City and a last-gasp victory over West Ham United. Their performance against Sean Dyche’s troops was their best yet, however, with Wolves’ relentless pressing and direct attacking play unsettling Burnley throughout and reducing the visitors to a handful of limp attempts on goal.

Ruben Neves (£5.2m) is the only Wolves player who is owned by more than 10% of managers in Fantasy Premier League but based on what we saw at Molineux, Santo’s side are seriously under-represented in the Fantasy world.

Neves and Joao Moutinho (£5.4m) were a joy to behold in midfield. From a Fantasy perspective, their goal threat is somewhat limited: neither player had a single penalty box touch or shot from inside the Burnley area (as deep-lying “registas”, of course, this is not a failing on their part). Neves, as we have come to expect, was instead his usual trigger-happy self from distance.

Creatively though, the pair excelled. No player took more corner-kicks in Gameweek 5 than Moutinho, who appears to have the monopoly at indirect set-piece situations.

There wasn’t a single player in FPL who created more chances than Neves this weekend, meanwhile.

The Portuguese midfield pairing made more passes than any other player on show at Molineux and it was the two Wolves wing-backs who benefitted most from Neves and Moutinho’s raking diagonal balls out to the flank.

Jonny and Matt Doherty (£4.4m) were owned by no more 1% of FPL managers before kick-off, with the budget-freeing Ryan Bennett (£4.1m) the most popular route into this Wolves defence.

Doherty and Jonny though would appear to be the two names to monitor for those who like their defenders to come with an added goal threat.

No FPL defender registered more penalty box touches than Doherty (five) this weekend, with Jonny just one behind.

Both players had three attempts on goal (all of Jonny’s coming from inside the opposition area), with each registering one big chance apiece: Doherty being denied by Hart from close range and Jonny having his shot cleared from almost on the goal-line by James Tarkowski (£5.0m).

The pair also made three key passes each, with one of Doherty’s resulting in Jimenez’s match-winning strike.

The solidity of Bennett, Willy Boly (£4.5m), Conor Coady (£4.5m) and Rui Patricio (£4.5m) behind them suggests clean sheets will be a semi-regular occurrence too, with Burnley not allowed a single big chance during the match: only Liverpool have conceded fewer-clear cut opportunities than Wolves this season.

Boly’s recoveries, CBIs (Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions) and pass completion statistics earned him a bonus point, with the French centre-back also going close with a volley in the first half.

Wolves were profligate in front of goal, with Jimenez and especially his replacement Leo Bonatini (£4.9m) guilty of several glaring misses.

Jimenez at least keeps getting into himself into goalscoring positions (only two strikers have had more efforts on goal than the Mexican this season) and is the only genuine rival to Danny Ings (£5.7m) for those considering a budget second or third forward: Jimenez is the highest-scoring player in his position in the sub-£6.0m price bracket.

That Santo has named the same starting XI for five successive matches adds to Jimenez and his team-mates’ appeal as FPL assets.

Helder Costa (£4.9m) and Diogo Jota (£6.2m) had plenty of sights of goal, but neither player really convinces as a viable FPL midfield option at the moment despite their relative security in Santo’s line-up and their undoubted contributions to the Wolves effort on the whole.

From a Burnley point of view, there was little to cheer.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.9m) returned from injury to take his place on the left wing and was the Clarets’ main goal threat, registering more shots (none of which caused Patricio any bother) than any of his team-mates.

Matej Vydra (£5.9m) was a bright spark upon his introduction and the collective failings of Chris Wood (£6.4m), Sam Vokes (£5.4m) and Ashley Barnes (£5.7m) this season would perhaps suggest that the former Derby County striker isn’t too far away from a start in attack.

Vydra’s volleyed effort, which came within a whisker of being turned in by Jack Cork (£4.9m) at the far post, was the closest the visitors came to scoring on Sunday.

Dyche had rolled out a 4-4-2 for the first time in the league this season in a bid to pose more of an attacking threat, but the Burnley boss bemoaned his side’s lack of creativity in his post-match interview:

The better side won, first and foremost. But from our point of view the intention to play hard was there, and it was a poor goal.

We knew it would be a tough game against a team with a real connection and we did well in terms of our defensive play in terms of getting the blocks and clearances in, but we didn’t have enough on the offensive side of the game today.

That’s as a collective. There were too many misplaced passes and we gave the ball away cheaply far too many times and it’s like a fog has dropped onto the group.

Dyche was right to highlight the defensive contributions of his side, with Ben Mee (£5.0m) and especially Tarkowski throwing their bodies in the way as Wolves mounted attack after attack, but full-backs Phil Bardsley and Charlie Taylor (both £4.4m) had a torrid afternoon against Jonny, Doherty, Jota and Costa. Stephen Ward and Matthew Lowton (both £4.9m) may fancy their chances of a recall soon.

In the end, the Burnley backline was indebted to the efforts of Hart between the sticks, with the former Manchester City goalkeeper making several stops – the best of which was from Jimenez – to keep the scoreline respectable.

Hart has now made more saves than any other goalkeeper in FPL this season, simultaneously highlighting his own good form while drawing attention to the porous defence in front of him.

Burnley sit second in our Season Ticker for the next three matches, but with Dyche talking of a “fog” descending on the group, there seems little incentive in drafting in the Clarets’ FPL assets into our squads at this present time.

Wolves XI (3-4-3): Patricio; Bennett, Coady, Boly; Doherty, Neves, Moutinho, Jonny; Costa (Traore 66′), Jimenez (Bonatini 76′), Jota (Gibbs-White 88′)

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Hart; Bardsley, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Lennon, Hendrick (Westwood 79′), Cork, Gudmundsson; Barnes (Vydra 56′), Vokes (Wood 70′)

Tbf though, he has more bonus than Wilson this season and in less games. But as a Zaha owner, I definitely agree with the yellow card thing. It's infuriating. Plus he tries a lot of dribbles and shots which don't come off which also dent the bonus.

This is a forward thinking one for gw9 on.
I am thinking of getting firmino form gw 9 onwards.
    Will he be worth it?
Or will he be a prime candidate for rotation because of the champions league?
I was thinking of Giroud as a sneaky alternative if he looks like getting the nod ahead of Morata
Or Vardy from gw 10 onwards
Any other option I should be considering in from the gw 9 period will have
    9.8 to spend

    tldr
from gw 9 (nine) onwards (9.7m to spend)
    Firmino
    Giroud
    Arnatuovic
    Vardy

Certainly great fixture run, but haven't checked individual form tbh.
Newcastle, maybe Watford are others from fixture perspective.

As I have no wildcard left I like to consider the other options that could be doing well around then.

I think southampton game brings us couple of CL victims. Giroud can be best option, I think Sarri hasn't pick his striker yet

Yeah Giroud looked exceptionally good and I was trying to decode Sarri's reasons for dropping Morata as 'Giroud is a better player'
The way Hazard is playing a chelsea striker could be the one to have.
I only have Robertson and Mane from Liverpool, the thoughts of Liverpool rotation are the only reason I am not 100% on firmino.

Yeah I was laughing when people were picking him at the start of the season. (Not now)
I looked at the fixtures and thought there is no way he is going to play like last season with all those squad changes as well.
But if west ham click when the fixtures get better now they could all be great value.

Assuming Mendy is out for a while, and you got rid of Robertson on your WC, would you bring him back in?
My concern is that he could be rotated vs Southampton and the next 2 after that are terrible fixtures (che MCI), but I'll want him after that.

Or would you replace him with someone with 3 decent fixtures and then replace that player with Robertson?

wouldn't go PVA, not doing enough to warrant the extra cost over the cheaper AWB.

It wouldn't be in place of AWB. I'm just looking for someone nailed on with attacking threat and a decent chance of keeping at least two clean sheets in the next 3 games and he fits the bill.

if you will play double palace defence, sure get him in (PVA). If you will not want to double up on Palace defence, just play AWB as your palace defender and get someone other than PVA. just my opinion anyway! I'd probably go with Smalling or Trippier as a replacement, if Mendy is out long term of course.

Yeah I'm not going to make any early transfers this week, too risky with 2 players potentially out (Aguero and Mendy) and midweek fixtures coming up.

My wildcard's going great at the moment even though I got rid of Fraser.
I'm on 82 points (AWB autosubbing for Mendy) with my one-week punt Elyounoussi left to play.

The players I brought in outscored the ones I took out by about 25 points, and I should be moving into the Top 1K once the GW is over, which will be my first time in the Top 1K in 5 seasons and 5 GWs of playing FPL. 🙂

Valencia potentially more nailed than Smalling if you want a Utd defender?
Other than that, PvA, Tomkins or even someone like Monreal if you're feeling like taking a gamble on a player who plays for a weak defence but is quite threatening.

Actually as a United fan - I think smalling is the only nailed one now. Even Valencia might get rotated with Young or Dalot for a game or two. Mou said Valencia is getting older and less able to play 3 games a week.

I’d love PVA but seems a double up is a bit much (since AWB would play if Mendy is out)

Cheers for the insight on Smalling. Could easily get 2 CS in the next 3 games.

I don't see it as being a bit much. Playing the odds is much more logical than diversifying just because you don't want to double up on a defence. I'm looking at it in isolation and I think PvA has a good chance to be one of the top scoring defenders in the next 3 GWs, so whether I have AWB or not doesn't influence that at all.

I've been toying with dropping Bobby for a few weeks, but he has been returning. I'm leaning to Wally > Fraser or Rich and then waiting for some news around Bobby, Mendy and Kun injuries.

If you have the £1.9 spare would you rather replace Tosun with Vardy or save the money and go Zaha?

That depends on what you have and whom you can afford if choosing Zaha. Both have great fixtures, but one thing that could be important is that Vardy is 8.9 while Maddison is 6.5, so going Zaha and Maddison could be better as there are no Palace mid to do the same with Vardy if you get my meaning (if you want one player from each team). But it also depends on team structure and who else you have, so difficult to give you an answer without knowing the context.

He's good value. Won't score two regularly. More likely to pop up with a few assists. This weekend likely to be his highest score of the season.I have him by the way.

Shaw is a rotation risk but I'd like to think Mourinho knows they haven't got a shot in CL so keeps him fit for the league. Also Young can cover Valencia aswell.

Ok so this will be annoying to a lot of you, because I'm about to talk about a £4.5m defender and that's as sexy as Roy Hodgson on a winter day. But I feel like this guy - DeAndre Yedlin - is flying way under the radar. Despite the fact he already has 1 goal and 1 assist in 4 starts with Newcastle this season, he looks like the right guy in the right team at the right time to be picked as a budget defender. Let's make my case. First of all, Newcastle are a good defensive side. Some will they that's the only thing they can do. Maybe, but they do it pretty well. They are the 5th best defense in shots on target conceded, despite having played Man City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal in four of the first five Gameweeks. Their other opponent were the far less better attacking force Cardiff. Result ? A goal-less draw.

Encouraging, especially when you look at those fixtures coming up. Yes the next three are not ideal with trips to Crystal Palace and Man United and the reception of Leicester inbetween. But then the grass will be greener than in any Paradise City. From Gameweek 9 all the way to Gameweek 18 it's like a giant joint. Just look at it : 6 receptions of non-top 6 teams, and 3 of their 4 trips in that period are against the worst attacking teams in the league (Huddersfield, Burnley & Southampton). Can see 5 CSs out of those 10 games, easily. And Yedlin offers some attacking threat too, even if his stats are not as impressive as some other full-backs in the league. But in my opinion, you don't get cheap defenders for attacking returns anyway (they won't get them, even if you prey all day). No £4.5m def is Alonso, Mendy or Robertson. Not even Dohertinho. You get them for the boring and yet so exciting 4 points clean sheet. And that's why I believe Yedlin could be the best option out there. And he's a differential too, and a fun one to be honest. Yedlin is a cool name, and I'm sure your team lacks of white and black shirts. You're not impressed ? You're not getting him in ? Well I am.

actually tinkered by the thought earlier today, but AWB and Doherty kind of making it hard to do, as no point losing them, it will involve loosing one of my 3 premium defenders but that might actually be tempting if Mendy is out for a prolonged period. 2 premiums and 3 very cheap to rotate could be freeing up a lot of cash to use in midfield/attack and Newcastles fixtures will soon be good as you say

Newcastle parks the bus and hopes for a draw against the bigger teams so I am not surprised at all by their defensive stats so far. I want to see how they go against the smaller teams (i.e will they open up a bit and actually attack, leaving them more exposed defensively) before going with a Newcastle defender. They were a man down for some of the Cardiff game, so can't totally rely on that result for data. Yedlin could be a good shout, but it is a wait and see for me.

I'm in a tough position. I've already taken a -4 to sort my team out, but my forwards are Aguero, Ings, and Kamara. I plan to take another hit to do Kamara -> someone as Aguero may be rotated next week and Ings can't play. I have 2.5 ITB, who do I transfer to? Thinking Mitro.

I have said it before in several sites and i have now a prime example that highlights my thinking. Watch the second goal for Bournemouth vs Leicester. Maguire goes first into Wilson but decides to let him go (bad decision) the ball goes to fast for him along the ground, and then he tries to catch up with Fraser.Bang average CB, he looks impressive on the ball but it comes with some glaring faults at the skills that you should be judged on as a CB. Slow and also rash/lacking skills in reading the game when the ball goes fast around him. Now i´ve said my piece.

Do you think it is time for wildcard? I have 3 players who are semi-injured and bench is not something I worry about in the beginning of the season. Is it time to WC? Otherwise I am happy with my team, if those who are flagged will recover It's bueno again, but I think Arnie needs to go.This is crazy, how you need to transfer out top players every week, I just transferred Mane To Hazard last week. When do you plan to use your WC if you have not used yours, what would be a better spot?

Anyone wants to exchange some info on UCL?

Right now my team is the following:

                                          Olsen Fahrmann
                                          Walker Kimmich Carvajal Telles Grimaldo
                                          Reus Asensio Silva Ziyech Salvio
                                          Benzema Lewa Aboubakar

Not sure when to use the limitless WC. Probably gw2

                                        WC side look ok?

                                        Hennessey Hamer

                                        Alonso Mendy Doherty (WB Bennett)

Hazard Salah D. Silva Fraser (Ward)

                                        Aguero Zaha Mitrovic

Yep. Jealous of the extra 1m value you have on my team...!

Yes, maybe sell Salah and buy him for 12.9 on Friday

Check Palace fixtures from gw10-13. May want to upgrade Hamer.

Also on WC. Easy decision leaving Robertson out (assuming he was in your side)?

Solid. I am short 0.1m from having that team.

My highest ever OR so far! Just squeezing into the top 2k with 3pts to come of the bench.

                                          Current team for next week:

                                          GKP: Hennessey (Fabianski)
DEF: Pereira, Mendy, Wan-Bissaka, Alonso (Doherty)
MID: Hazard, Fraser, Pedro (Gündogan) (Walcott)
FWD: Wilson, Aubameyang (C), Agüero (V)

Already used my FT to do Miki > Fraser but anyone worth taking a hit for? (or 2 if worthwhile for the medium term) £2.6m ITB

Thinking of bringing Maddison in for either Pedro, Gündogan or Walcott. Maybe Lukaku for Auba?

                                          Cheers

                                          Mkhi > Maddison or Richarlison?

If Rich, will wait a week for that and use this weeks ft on Arny > Mitro.

                                          Cheers

Would you fancy Doherty and Wolves to do one on utd nxt gw?? Could be a great match.

If Mendy is injured I might play him instead of double Palace defence AWB and PVA??
