Captains

Captain Sensible – Salah, Hazard and Aguero present Gameweek 6 dilemma

The Gameweek 6 captain debate looks set to be the most difficult of the season so far.

The top three candidates according to our poll all have favourable fixtures and can also boast impressive underlying numbers.

While there are alternative options worth considering, this week we seek to answer which one of Mohamed Salah, Eden Hazard and Sergio Aguero should get your armband.

Captain Poll

Gameweek 6 could prove an incredibly dramatic one as the most-sold player is the current captain poll leader.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) has already been transferred out by 219,000+ Fantasy managers but has a 30% share of our vote (at time of writing).

The Liverpool man has blanked for two weeks in a row, and five midfield options have registered more points than him so far this season.

However, it would seem that those who have voted in our poll are keeping faith in Salah based on some impressive underlying statistics that we’ll touch on below. A home fixture against Southampton is hugely appealing, too.

Currently occupying second place is last week’s hat-trick hero Eden Hazard (£10.9m), who has been backed by roughly 22% of voters.

The Chelsea man is now the only FPL asset to register returns in every match so far, despite not even starting the first two Gameweeks.

His next opponent West Ham are still without a clean sheet, and their defensive frailties should prove easy for Hazard to exploit.

Last week’s runaway captain poll winner Sergio Aguero (£11.4m) has to settle for third place this time around with 18% of the votes.

Large numbers of his owners will admit to being disappointed that the Manchester City forward only registered two assists against Fulham and no goals. That may be one of the reasons why more are trusting Salah and Hazard.

Also, the Argentinian picked up a knock in that match but returned to action for a substitute’s appearance against Lyon in the Champions League midweek.

The fact that he did not start on Wednesday night suggests that, at the very least, he will lead the line on Saturday when the defending champions visit a vulnerable Cardiff City side.

Not surprisingly, Fantasy managers are considering Sadio Mané (£10.0m) as the best of the rest, with an 8% share of the vote. The Senegalese midfielder offers a cheaper route into the Liverpool attack than Salah, is in good form and may relish a match against his former employers in Southampton.

Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) and Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.8m) both sit in the 3% bracket while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m), Jamie Vardy (£8.9m), Ryan Fraser (£5.7m). Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.4m) are the only other options currently above 1%.

I've taken hits to bring in Hazard for a -8, whilst keeping Salah, Mane, Alonso, Mendy and Aguero. Compromised on other areas having to bring in Billing and Jimenez (so far). I've got dead wood in Daniels and Ings (fixtures turning sour) - and a bunch of other players who could be transferred out for better ones. Only 0.2 ITB. Should I wildcard? I worry it may be too early in the season to do so.

I'd WC yes. You should have left Haz off. He's not worth a - 8 and now you've got Ings and Jiminez and Billing

BTW, Ings isn't a player you buy for his fixtures. He's a player you buy for your squad and occasionally play when he has a good fixture.

To be fair. Billing and Jim are great cheap options. Pick of the 5th mid and 3rd strikers

    Mendy - Alonso - robertson
    Mane - d. Silva - fraser - Hazard

Okay had to WC after a stupid knee jerk. Opinions appreciated:

    Foster / Patricio
    Mendy / Alonso / robbo / awb/ bennet
    Hazard / mane / richarlison / Fraser / hojberg
    Aguero / lukaku / ings

Tempting to change mendy if injured but would miss out on a large price rise. Also could go lukaku to lacazette to upgrade elsewhere?

Hmm. If you have some other minor things you would LIKE to do in an ideal situation, it justifies a wildcard. I had to choose between -8/meagre points this week or a Wildcard. All the price rises sort of forced my hand, and I'm happy with it. Hard to come back from a -8

Very interesting article, I'm just wondering if the numbers tell the same story for Hazard and Aguero away from home.
I don't have the numbers but they use to perform a lot less away than home. Should be a point in favor of Salah right?

I always prefer the home fixture. I analysed last season for Salah and Aguero and both performed better at home. Going with Salah based on that.

Adding more doubt to an already tough choice 🙁

4 goals and 3 assists at home for Aguero this year and 0 return away as of now... The sample is small but I know it was similar pasts seasons. And same story for Hazard. I'm going Salah even though I'm not sure about this one... Form is definitely not with him this time around

            Cardiff are surely the worst
Team in the league (no disrespect) combined with the fact Aguero played less game time than Salah in midweek & just signed a contract extension.

Tough tough captaincy choice this weekend.

      Best Pedro replacement?

      A) Maddison
      B) Fraser
      C) Richarlison/Walcott
      D) Willian

      Leaning towards Maddison.

If Pedro is out long term then Willian else Fraser.

Anyone but Walcott. I'd go for Fraser.

          considering the same. It's tough.

Maddison v Huddersfield. This is what's swaying it for me. Is that too short term?

Fraser is on fire. Great value. His fixtures turn around GW11

Richarlison i'm looking at him next week

Have Mendy and Arnie and 1FT. Would you:
        A. Mendy out for Laporte
        B. Arnie our for Zaha
        C. Both A and B for -4

First sub on the bench is Bennett (Wolves).

I think the hit will be worth it provided you are happy to go without Mendy

Salah has 3 red arrows on fpl stats, yet he's on -96% for a couple of days and it isn't changing... Can someone explain it to me?

They're prediction sites. Lots of wildcards in play also. Does his price really matter. You're either holding him or you're not, 0.1m should not be the deciding factor

I'm on WC and keeping him but I need that 0.1 very much 😛

Certain people at fpl towers don't want him to fall.

Lots of wildcards flying around. Moves on a wildcard don't count towards price changes.

Can fpl statistics distinguish a normal transfer and a one made on a wildcard?

They can, but it's still all predictive. That's why you'll see a player jump back when they do an adjustment. Pickford last night was in the red zone and jumped back to 97ish% after an update.

        Patricio(Button)
        Alonso Robertson Mendy AWB (Tomkins)
        Mane Salah Fraser *Walcott (*Jota)
        Aguero King (Kamara)
        1 ft,1.5 itb
Thinking of saving and evaluating next week, obviously will wait for Mendy news, probably thinking of Jota to Richarlison

Why would you start a defender ahead of a striker vs Newcastle? Genuinely interested..

Not for me, no. City attack is far more productive than bum United.
