Watchlist Update – All change for premium defenders as Newcastle creep into consideration

We have revised our Watchlist player rankings for goalkeepers and defenders following Gameweek 6.

The Watchlist can be found in your sidebar on a desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet. It acts as a collection of our current thoughts on player selection for each position, also citing the factors that affect their ranking on the list.

As a general rule, we try to commit to just one player per position per club. However, in some cases we where we believe double-coverage is advisable, two players will be listed instead.

Goalkeepers

Ederson (£5.6m) remains top of the Watchlist after securing his third clean sheet and a fourth return of the campaign in Gameweek 6. However, the Manchester City man loses his Favourable Fixtures factor with two particularly tough matches in their next four. Home matches against Brighton and Burnley sit alongside trips to Liverpool and Tottenham.

Alisson (£5.6m) also retains his place in the Watchlist based on his impressive form. The Liverpool man has kept a clean sheet in all but two matches so far this season. Neither of the fixtures factors applies to Alisson though with two favourable matches against Huddersfield and Cardiff coming after Chelsea and Man City.

Rui Patrício (£4.5m) and David de Gea (£5.9m) are two more non-movers on the Watchlist with no change in their respective form or quality of fixtures.

Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) and Petr Cech (£5.0m) appear next to reflect their continued good fixtures. Neither side has been particularly adept at keeping clean sheets in 2018/19, but they still have the potential. Schmeichel sits a little higher for an increased certainty of a start.

Joe Hart (£4.5m) is the first of two new inclusions in the Goalkeeper section of the Watchlist. His clean sheet against Bournemouth was his second of the season as the Clarets work towards improving on a poor start. Neither fixtures factor applies to him with Cardiff and Huddersfield up next but Man City and Chelsea after that.

Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) drops a little bit despite recording a third clean sheet of the season in Gameweek 6. Just below him is our second new entry Martin Dubravka (£5.0m). Newcastle’s fixtures are on the turn now and apart from a trip to Manchester United in Gameweek 8, have several with clean sheet potential between now and Gameweek 19.

The popularity of Marcos Alonso (£6.9m) has pushed Kepa (£5.5m) off the Watchlist. The left-back is heavily owned for his offensive potential, and the current state of Chelsea’s fixtures do not encourage double-coverage of their defence.

Asmir Begovic (£4.5m) also dropped off after yet another match in which Bournemouth conceded more goals than their underlying numbers suggested they should have done.

Defenders

Alonso remains the top pick in defence. The Chelsea man has returned points in all but one match thus far in 2018/19, with three clean sheets, a goal and five assists to his name.

Kieran Trippier (£6.1m) has received a boost after registering his second assist of the season in Gameweek 6. He rises up the ranks as a result of other premium options facing injury and/or tough fixtures. Conversely, Spurs rank second for defence on our Season Ticker over the next six Gameweeks, and Trippier has a role in set pieces.

Andrew Robertson (£6.2m) just about holds onto his place but Trent Alexander-Arnold has run him close. The Scottish left-back has shown more consistent attacking returns over the course of the season so far, and we believe he is more likely to continue that during tough fixtures. Robertson is also more adept at picking up bonus points with Alexander-Arnold already earning three yellow cards this season.

Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m) takes Benjamin Mendy’s place on the Watchlist with a fair bit of uncertainty over the wing-back’s fitness. There is no return date on him currently and until we know more, we have to take him off. Laporte is the most reliable replacement considering he has played every minute of the league campaign so far and has some goal threat too.

Matt Doherty (£4.4m) tops off the best of the rest with Wolves’ defensive potential, appealing fixtures and his budget price. Jose Holebas (£4.9m) loses his price-related tag now that he has risen in price again but still stays in our thoughts with Watford’s relatively kind run and his role in set pieces. The Greek also receives a ‘Sus’ factor as he is one yellow card away from a one-match suspension.

Luke Shaw‘s (£5.1m) return to the Man United team keeps him in the Watchlist and he manages to lose his Rotation Risk factor. Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.3m) sits just below him. His slight increase in value has reduced his appeal a little for non-owners and only one of Crystal Palace’s next six fixtures looks like one where a clean sheet is likely for him.

DeAndre Yedlin (£4.5m) moves onto the defence Watchlist for the same reason as Dubravka. The American has a goal and an assist to his name so far this season and is the most assured of a start out of the budget options available at Newcastle. Jamaal Lascelles is arguably a bit too pricey while there is competition for places at left-back and centre-back between Ciaran Clark, Fabian Schär and Paul Dummett.

Ben Chilwell (£5.0m) takes the place of colleague Ricardo Pereira after the latter was dropped for Gameweek 6. Pereira was held accountable by the local press for the manner of Leicester’s heavy defeat to Bournemouth in Gameweek 5. It appears that manager Claude Puel was in agreement as he deployed Daniel Amartey in his stead against Huddersfield. Meanwhile, Chilwell held onto his place and continued to post encouraging underlying statistics.

On WC and im tempted to drop Ederson for Patricio or Hart.

The value in the 4.5 GKs is worth it right?

If Mendy is confirmed out how does the following sound using 2FT?

    Mendy + Hughes -> Doherty + Richarlison

    Leaves me with the following

    Patricio
    Tomkins Doherty Wan-Bissaka
    B.Silva Maddison Mane Richarlison Hazard
    Aguero Zaha

    Foster Azpilicueta Robertson King

I'm seriously considering Salah for the armband this week. Thoughts? It's exactly the kind of game Liverpool could thrive in. And if Liverpool go ahead it will just lead to gaps at the back as they push for an equaliser.

Aguero is the obvious choice, but I can really see him being taken off and rested for the champions league game midweek.

I dont think Kun is the best choice. Hes the easy one for safety. But i can see him getting another 6 pointer or less.

Salah vs alonso sounds good. But again salah doesnt really get bonus unless he hits a brace.

Kane, richarlison or mitro are the big picks this week!

      1. Dr Robotnik

I have considered someone like Richarlison, but Salah just has that potential to grab a brace against Chelsea. Everton haven't shown any form at all, and Mitrovic is Mitrovic. Could do well, I have him, but Fulham, away from home, I can't see more that a single goal. I just think Salah would be a great curveball and a big differential captain this week. Chelsea gave away so many chances in that West Ham game.

I wildcarded this week. But before that Salah was locked in as my captain.

Iv gone the whole season without Kun and am top1k . Fortune favours the brave my friend. Liverpool are a big game team. Sarri wont park the bus at all

    Fabianski
    Robertson, Alonso, Mendy*
    Salah, D Silva, Maddison, Fraser
    Aguero, Mitrovic, Wilson

    Foster, AWB, Pedro*, Bednarek

    1FT, 0.2 ITB

    A.) Mendy > Laporte, Pedro > Richarlison (-4)
    B.) Mendy > Laporte, D Silva > Richarlison (-4)
    C.) Mendy > Laporte

Looking for a way to bring in Kane, but also keep Aguero, and also bring in a Liverpool defender while still keeping Mane and Hazard.
Thoughts on this team in the long term? I'm 4 transfers away from it:

      Patricio - Ryan
      TAA - Alonso - Doherty - Wan - Yedlin
      Hazard - Mane - Richarlison - KNOCKAERT - ELNENY
      Mitrovic - KANE - Aguero

It would mean making the following moves over the next few GWs:
      - Mendy -> TAA
      - Dilva -> Knockaert (look at his fixtures from GW 8)
      - Pedro -> Elneny (which saves me the benching headache)
      - Wilson -> Kane

Aside from Hudson-Odoi, he's the only 4.3M mid, and I'd rather not use up another Chelsea spot.
I also want to have money in the bank and I'd rather not pay 4.5M for a mid I'll never use.

Like the potential team but not a fan of detailed long-term planning (form & price changes), maybe try banking a transfer if you can - possibly this round as there's no need for getting TAA early

              1. stat
                  5 years, 8 months ago

The plan is to bank the transfer this week, however the problem is that if I don't downgrade Mendy to TAA I can't fund the other moves 🙁

Not sure how I'm going to spread these transfers out, it's pretty tough

              Football knowledge

What’s the name of the player who as youngster played for West Ham about, maybe 6 or 7 years back . He had a skinhead and used to celebrate goals in the Shearer 1 arm raised style

If you look at the options he put you'll find that Doherty and Fraser should play
then you have to pick if you want to play a MID or DEF
so imo Pedro > Hughes > CRY DEF vs BOU

                Patricio, Hamer
                Alonso, Mendy, Yedlin, Wan-Bissaka, Bennett
                Salah, Hazard, Mane, Kenedy, Hojbjerg
                Aguero, Mitrovic, Wilson

I need Richarlison in that midfield but it means downgrading some FPL gold in midfield. Mane has risen a price a lot, though.

He has liv spurs and MANU in next 6 and is a rotation concern in the easier games as City need to focus more on the CL due to their round 1 loss to Lyon. He might score 5 past Brighton at home, but Brighton seem to step up defensively when they visit the big teams. If Burnley return to their ways as it seems they have, than Man City have 1 good fixture in the next 6.

Doesn't help if he's not playing :/ Jose has completely lost the plot. Pogba only scored couple pens so far. United has 9 in 6. West Ham was good last week and Newcastle has also been solid at the back.

But like the idea of dropping Kun on wildcard, even with this weeks fixture. Especially given you have a plan to get Salah for GW9.

I got 110pts after my WC last season doing something similar to what I want to do now. It just feels like a turning points for Liv and Man City players short term.

Aguero's 60 minutes are better than many striker's 90 minutes.
Lacazette also doesn't justify being 0.5m more than Vardy IMO - Vardy is on pens, won't get subbed off early, and Joe mentioned in the Scoutcast that he takes shots more frequently

You don't look Vardy as an option based on stats. He he is pretty much an anomaly and usually does very well against good teams and struggles against teams sitting back. If I would opt for Vardy he'd be a long term pick (until GW15 or so).

But might go for Maddison instead as a cheaper route.

I’m about to propose a trade in my draft league. Tell me if I’m crazy.

I’m giving up Firmino for Vardy.

Here’s my current squad if that helps you decide:

                      Hart, Pickford
                      Mendy, Robertson, bellerin, Bertrand, Chilwell
                      Mane, Milner, Madison, siggy, Moura
                      Firmino, king, Jimenez

Feel like Vardy has better long term potential. I’ve already got pretty good Liverpool cover with Milner, mane, and Robertson.

Delph is only 5.3 and is home to Brighton. Removing him for a hit seems unnecessary. Think I’d rather save in that scenario.

Yeah not sure what to do. Doubts around Mouras “nailedness” would make him seem the more obvious downgrade but this is hardly the week to do it.

Was thinking even downgrading sub keeper if it gave you enough to get Rich in for Fraser but just short...

Think all the rest of your mids are better than him. Rich instead of any of the other three, except maybe Moura, weakens your team. Rich instead of Fraser makes that midfield bulletproof.

Yeah but I’ve had Fraser since the begining so the value is great. The others are better but priced significantly higher also. Moura least nailed. Mane allows an upgrade to Kane. Finding it tough to decide. Probably wisest to carry the transfer.

Aye, can wreck your head thinking about it too much! I must say, I'd only ditch Mane if he was injured, too good not to have I think. Potential double figures against any opposition, very few players offer that.

Saving my FT this week and trying to find a way to get Kane in for GW 8.

The problem is I want to keep Hazard, Mane and Aguero so it's going to take 4 transfers to get to my optimal team.

The other problem is I want to get rid of Mendy, Dilva, Pedro and Wilson in GW 8 for TAA, Knockaert, Elneny and Kane.

I could do it for an 8 point hit that would potentially not pay off in GW 8 unless Kane went crazy against Cardiff (which is possible), but I'm more concerned about the long term.

Carrying on with Mendy / Dilva / Pedro is a real pain considering their rotation risks / injuries, and keeping Pedro would mean rotating him with Wilson every week which I don't fancy doing. Wilson would have to make way because I want Kane and don't want to get rid of Mitro and Aguero.

So I'm genuinely thinking of making the following moves for an 8 point hit next GW:

Mendy vs liv -> TAA vs MCI
Dilva vs liv -> Knockaert vs WHU
Pedro vs sou -> Elneny vs ful
Wilson vs wat -> Kane vs CAR

Obviously Elneny will just be fodder but I don't want to relieve my selection headache and there's no way I can have a decent 5th mid with the rest of my team.

I'd like to spread that 8 point hit over the course of a few GWs but it's just not feasible because the first three moves need to happen to bring in Kane.

Is that 8 point hit crazy, or what do you think?

                                  Okay I'll TL;DR it:

8 point hit next week to restructure the balance of my squad?
Mendy, Dilva, Pedro, Wilson -> TAA, Knockaert, Elneny, Kane

So I can afford a couple price rises/drops
