Meet the Manager #3 – Will Thomas

Will Thomas is among Fantasy Football’s rare polymaths, with the ability to excel in two different formats, Fantasy Premier League and Sky Fantasy Football.

In FPL he has five top 10,000 finishes including overall ranks of 753 and 82, while on Sky he has breached the top 100 on four occasions.

But as Will explains in our latest Meet the Manager video interview, juggling two different formats can have its pitfalls as well as its advantages.

He chats to me about his strategies for success and how to achieve a top finish. We also look back on his 2017/18 campaign, in which hedging his picks across two formats cost him dearly in FPL.

In addition, he reveals how Sky’s patient approach, due to limited transfers, as well as its focus on fixtures with multiple captaincy selections allowed, has helped Will to excel across most of his FPL career.

Will’s views on the current season also prove illuminating, including why managers need to take advantage of an unusually high number of budget gems this term.

He also reveals why he is shunning Harry Kane and is instead pinning his hopes for success on another, far cheaper, striker.

With a current FPL rank of 26,711, he looks to be already on his way to another strong season.

The chat with Will is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

The first Meet the Manager video, featuring Triggerlips can be viewed here, while the second, featuring Philman, can be seen here.

Hi, any chance Trippier benched this gw? Need one week punt before wc to replace Mendy (maybe to late, better late than never).

Actually it might. He still wants tripp to be fit long term. Injury is injury. Playing for which team dosnt really matter

If they were playing a decent team he would surely play. Given how weak the team is anything can happen. I also have tripp tbh

Nah. First of all, Pochettino cant rest his best rb, play third choice whos clearly weaker when theyre basically out of the champions league and have caught some form in the league. Secondly, Pochettino has said mulitple times that he doesnt believe in fatigue to actually be a physiological thing, and merely a mental thing. Ofcourse Trippier CAN be rotated, but its very unlikely.

I own Trippier my self, so i hope he plays, ofcourse. But i stand by my logic regardless. Like ive said, its nations league, Poch couldnt give 2 fks about that, and he doesnt even believe in fatigue so why would he rotate. But like ive also said, above 0% chance im wrong.

Have you actually seen Cardiff? 😀 Poch 'can' rest whoever he wants - whether he will or not is anyone's guess.

Well, if he knows/thinks Trippier will play 2 more times next week he might be more inclined to give him his rest now when he's not really needed

So he would risk compromising his job for the sake of the national team? If anything, Poch will ask Southgate to rest Trippier in one of the games. Its nations league ffs.

              1. Klein
                • 8 Years
                5 years, 7 months ago

The thing is poch has more to lose than southgate. Even if tripp gets injured, southgate wont need him untill the next int games. On the other hand poch needs him every week. Rather rest against cardiff than other stronger ones?

                  5 years, 7 months ago

Exactly. He has more to lose than Southgate. I think you overestimate the amount of fks Poch gives about the national team. Spurs are on a hot streak in the league and theyre basically out of the champions league. Why would he risk not beating Cardiff just to give Trippier a break?

              2. SADIO SANÉ
                • 8 Years
                5 years, 7 months ago

Compromising his job for resting Trippier against Cardiff? Jesus. Btw, I do think Trippier starts so we'll just end it there.

When the replacement is KWP who is a lot worse than Trippier, i would call it compromising, yes. Hes done very well for Spurs (Poch, that is), but if they fall short of CL qualification this season, he might be gone. Every game matters and its too early in the season to be rotating too much anyways.

You looked from that side. Now see from this
Tot already have eriksen alli dembele vertongen injured. Lloris just got back. Another injury to a rather weak team and what will their position be? I hope tripp plays too. But if i was the manager i wouldnt risk it

None of those injuries are long term, and Lloris hasnt been injured hes been punished for his drunkdriving. And if all of those players are unable to play the game, then why would you weaken your team even further by benching your best wingback? Like ive said a billion times, Poch has been quoted multiple times on that he doesnt believe in fatigue. Which coincidentally is the reason why Spurs have a bunch of injuries midway through the season.

If WCing next week I’d probably get Hart instead of Ryan, especially as I have Arnie. I think Kane will score, but I’m not convinced Spurs will batter Cardiff without Eriksen, Alli or Dembele.

I also don’t think my team is in need of a WC yet - Tomkins out next week, King & ASmith out after SOT/ful. Other than that all seems ok ish don’t you think?

Problem isnt bringing Kane, its getting rid of him next week. It will be IB, we might some other issues to deal with, which will either force a WC or unnecessary hits.

May as well get some opinions while it’s quiet before pages flying by tomorrow.

    Ederson
    Bennett - Alonso - Trippier
    Richarlison - Hazard (c) - Mane - Maddison
    Arnie - Aguero - Mitro
    ———————————————————-
    Hamer: Fraser, AWB, Robertson

    GTG?

Also, please drill it into me that a FH isn’t worth it haha.

good to go. Only worry is no Kane. in the same dilemma and I am buying a sofa as ditching aguero just doesn't look like a good idea. FH will be handy in the blank gameweek.

Cheers bud, yeah.....Kane, making me think i need to use my FH, damn him haha! I just can’t see it being worth it, Kane would need to score a hat trick for me in order for it to be worth it, just can’t see that happening. Need to be sensible and keep this FH for blanks.

Used my FH this week. Blank gameweeks are filled with mediocre teams anyways and are usually low scoring. Can't find a sofa big enough to hide behind this week when Kane face arguably the worst team ever in the PL at home.

Who to make way for Kane - Kun or Salah?

Front three is Zaha, Mitrovic and Kun

Wanted Ozil/Son as possible replacement for Salah but I'm 0.2 short. Doh.

FH squad. Really wanted to get Vardy for this game, and not entirely convinced with Son. Got Holebas for first sub in case of a Trippier or Shaw no show. Already clicked the button so no way back unfortunately. Please kindly help me to improve the team.

    Hart
    Alonso Trippier Shaw
    Gudmundsson Hazard Maddison Son
    Arnautovic Kane(c) Lacazette

    Sub: Patricio, Holebas,Obiang, Bednarek

    Should I do
    1. Vardy + Anderson + Lamela
    or
    2. Arnautovic + Maddison + Son

    ?

Alright, I've managed to reasoned with myself and have resisted the temptation to do a double transfer to swap Salah over to Kane.

So my questions is, should I replace Mendy with Trippier or Rose? Rose is cheaper and seems like a good dark horse. Or just keep Mendy and save my FT?

My line up for the week will be:
    Hart
    Doherty - Trippier/Rose - Shaw - Alonso
    Salah - Maddison - Hughes - Hazard (C)
    Aguero - Mitrovic

    Subs: Hennessey, AWB, Ings, Neves

If I don't use my FT this week, AWB will take a slot in defence while Mendy stays on the bench

Kane non owners have you found the sofa to hide behind?:)
I can do Kun to Kane for free with 1 FT, but decided not to do it, cause there will be international break and I would like to have 2FT before GW9.
So hoping Kun will score and match Kane at least)

The room i’ll be watching it in doesn’t have a sofa, i have a pillow though, to cry into also haha!
However, can go either way, goals aren’t guarenteed, and likely that Aguero can match him with how Pool are performing.
