Man City sweat on De Bruyne fitness as key options rested

Manchester City are currently sweating over the fitness of Kevin de Bruyne (£9.8m) after he came off injured in the League Cup.

However, there were some positives for Fantasy Premier League managers as neither one of Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) or Benjamin Mendy (£6.4m) were involved in the 2-0 win over Fulham.

We’ve got all the Fantasy talking points in this latest Scout Notes article.

Manchester City 2-0 Fulham

Goals: Brahim Diaz x2 (£4.7m)

Assists: Vincent Kompany (£5.2m)

It was a mixed night for De Bruyne as he made his first start since sustaining a knee injury in August. He was in excellent form on the night but had to be brought off in the second half after falling awkwardly under a Timothy Fosu-Mensah (£4.5m) tackle. Thankfully for him, the knee he was clutching as he limped off was not the one he damaged over the summer, but it is still early days, until we get another update from Pep Guardiola.

“I think today Kevin is back. The Kevin we know. He made a huge effort against Shakhtar, played a few minutes against Spurs in difficult conditions. Today he was involved in offence and defence. Hopefully what happened in the last minute is not serious. He is being checked by the doctors. We don’t know if it’s nothing or if it’s something serious.” – Pep Guardiola

Guardiola made 10 changes to the side that won at Spurs on Monday night with only John Stones (£5.3m) keeping his place. That was good news for a large number of Fantasy managers invested in Aguero and Mendy, who played no part in the match.

Aymeric Laporte (£5.8m) looks set to start an eleventh successive Premier League match on Sunday after he was left out of the match-day squad entirely.

Ederson (£5.8m), Kyle Walker (£6.6m), Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) and Raheem Sterling (£11.1m) were all unused substitutes, while Riyad Mahrez (£8.6m) came on for goal-scorer Brahim Diaz (£4.7m) in the closing stages. The youngster continues to impress in matches outside the Premier League but is still yet to register an FPL minute this season.

“Everybody was good. Brahim make two goals, Aro make a clean sheet. We didn’t concede too many chances, he gave us good security, Phil Foden every time he plays a good level.” – Pep Guardiola

Most of the starting XI against Fulham were always unlikely to be starting against Southampton this weekend so there are not expected to be many Fantasy managers too worried about the so-called ‘Pep Roulette’ this weekend. 90 minutes for Stones and Leroy Sané (£9.2m), as well as De Bruyne’s 86 minutes and injury, are the biggest causes for concern.

There was a start in goal for Arijanet Muric (£4.5m) with Oleksandr Zinchenko (£4.8m), Vincent Kompany (£5.2m) and Danilo (£5.1m) joining Stones in a back-four. Despite fielding a second-strike defence, Man City kept their eighth successive clean sheet in domestic competitions this season.

That will be somewhat discouraging to owners of Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.9m) and Andre Schürrle (£6.0m), as they formed part of a fairly strong Fulham line-up that offered little. There were just three changes from the side that lost to Bournemouth in Gameweek 10.

“It’s not so strange in this country (to name a strong side in the EFL Cup), especially teams plays Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, between these three games it’s nine days and I try first of all respect the competition.” – Slavisa Jokanovic

Despite playing what constituted as a first-team, Fulham were exceptionally flat throughout the encounter. From the moment Diaz’s opening goal hit the back of the net in the 18th minute the match felt more like a training exercise than a cup tie.

Once again the Cottagers’ forward players were starved of service and barely troubled their illustrious hosts. That was largely down to the fact that Slavisa Jokanovic appeared insistent in playing the ball out from the back. Naturally, this was not particularly effective against the best possession side in the country.

There had been suggestions that Fulham would benefit from Luciano Vietto (£5.5m) and Tom Cairney (£4.8m), the former for his creative link-up with Mitrovic and the latter for protection of the defence. Admittedly this was a match against Manchester City, but it appears they did not have the desired effect in a drab performance.

“It’s important for us (having Cairney back), between other things I try to force him for all the games. I know in life there always exists risk, he push all the game bravely, he made good work, he needed this kind of situation with this kind of game. He didn’t play so much this season, he’s an important player for us and I believe he is positive in everything he made tonight.” – Slavisa Jokanovic

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Muric; Zinchenko, Kompany, Stones, Danilo; Foden, Delph, De Bruyne (Gomes 86′); Sané, Jesus, Diaz (Mahrez 78′).

Fulham XI (4-3-3): Rico; R Sessegnon, Ream (Le Marchand 69′), Odoi, Fosu-Mensah; Seri, Zambo Anguissa, Cairney; Schürrle (Ayité 81′), Mitrović, Vietto (Christie 90′).

    a) take a -4 hit to get Aguero (C)
    b) Hazard to Sterling (C) FT but would lose 0.4m when I transfer Hazard back in.

So I did some research on how Sarri has responded to Hazard's return in the past. Before the GW 3 game against Newcastle, here is what Sarri had to say:

"I don’t know. I think Eden is ready for 50 or 60 minutes. I don’t know if 90 minutes. But he can start.” Asked if the player himself feels ready to play a full game, Sarri replied: “Maybe, but I think it’s more important (what is in) my mind.”

    https://www.westlondonsport.com/chelsea/chelsea-boss-unsure-of-hazards-fitness-ahead-of-newcastle-clash

Despite the pessimistic remarks of his manager, Hazard ended up playing the entire quota of 90 minutes. You'd expect that Sarri, like Eddie Howe, tends to err on the side of precaution on injuries in his press conferences.

TLDR/Conclusion: I would not be surprised if Hazard starts the game, and ends up being taken off around the hour mark if the game is in the bag. You'd expect him to be involved in the goals in that case, anyways. Given the history of the pessimism of his manager, his high ownership and the fact that the game is on a Sunday (which would give Hazard more recovery time to train), I personally think it's an extremely risky move to sell before such a favorable fixture.

50 or 60 minutes is not the same as 40 or 45 minutes though. The latter suggest less than one half. I think he'll start on the bench.

Even if that is the case (worst case scenario), he has returned assists from his 2 sub appearances so far - so has the potential to deliver against tired legs.

Haz couldn't come off in that game because they used the 3rd sub on an injured player iirc

The last player subbed was Kovacic and even he was removed around the 80 mark.

This. You should have done deeper research.

Sarri did say that he needs to speak to Hazard though at the end.

Sarri was to use his last sub to take hazard off but kovavic could not continue playing so sarri ended up using his last substitution on him and hazard ended up playing 90 minites

I think he'll also start on the bench and only come on if it's 1-0 or 2-0 in Chelsea's favour. I think around the 65 min mark. If it's level after 50 min I think he'll come on then instead.

Call me nuts, but i'm tempted on removing Hazard from my team if he starts on the bench. On WC this week. Hazard usually struggles a few games before getting back in form after an injury. This way i can go with Sterling or David Silva instead and upgrade my 5th midfielder also. On the other side of the coin, he is a probably a season keeper. Won't be easy getting him back in and i'l loose atleast 0.4 doing so...

I'd be tempted to do Daniels > Balbuena and start him before AWB

Bobby F to Arnie done. Hopefully Haz gets a start on Sunday with an extra day to train. Can't sub him out through risk of losing the value.

      Preferred West ham defensive option?
      Daniels -> diop or zabaleta
      Exact cash

Got 2 Ft and 0.1 itb but not major issues for this gw.

Team is linked and in recent posts...

      A) Schmeical > Fab
      B) Vardy > Arni, H-Odoi > playing mid
      C) TAA to Diop and bank
      D) Jimenez to Success

B or C, although think Balbuena is better than Diop

A - seems sideways given both have good fixtures, but an okay transfer if you have plans for the funds later on
D - this is what the cool kids are doing, and I think it will end the same way as Kane and Sterling did recently.

I have put success in but fear he will end up like the kane fiasco but at least he can warm the bench and anyway i have a wildcard mendy was my main reason though hey ho its only a game

Cheers, thought the same about A. TAA may also do decent against Fulham and Liverpools fixtures are nice for when he does play

Hey folks got a real tough one here, its not an immediate question but one more of long term structure.

      Is it better to have:
      A) Siggurdsson + fodder
      B) a rotating pair like Fraser + Jimenez

You can substitute the names but that's not the point of the question. I can see the strength of maximizing the value on the pitch, but equally a rotating pair will always have a decent fixture and also give you a viable 1st bench option that's not total dog shite.

      Thoughts?

Would ordinarily say A, but rotation's becoming an ever bigger thing so tending towards B personally.

Is Sterling really worth 2.5m more than Mahrez?

2.5m for assist potential pretty much. Makes the difference between captaincy but otherwise no imo.

I guess technically he's not injured anymore, not sure I agree with it though tbh, he's still 75% likely to play imo. If he doesn't start and they are 3-0 up, I doubt he comes on imo - but who knows.

          Fab / Hamer
          Mendy Robo Alonso Benett Wan-bass
          Salah Hazard Knockaert Madison Obaing
          Kun Mit Jimenez
          0.2ITB

So I swap Mit for Arnie?
          or
          Knock for ???
          or
Jimenez for success to gain a bit more $$$

          Any other suggestions?

Hazard news has put a spanner in my works. My plan was

          TAA > Mendy

          I'm now considering

TAA, Hazard > Balbuena, Salah (C)

          Madness?

Can't see hazard starting. I was going to bring him in instead of KDB but now I'm thinking bsilva or mahrez

Don’t agree at all but even if it was true a brace and cs for Sterling is one point less than Kun hattie

you really think so? Aguero has the ability of getting a hattrick. i know he plays less time but still

          How's this looking please?

          Ederson
          Robertson | Alonso | Mendy
          Maddison | Pereyra | Barkley | Salah
          Lacazette | Arnautovic | Aguero(c)
