How Richarlison has adapted to centre-forward role at Everton

Richarlison (£6.9m) has made a mockery of recent suggestions that he cannot play as a centre-forward for Everton.

Two weeks ago we compared his first two performances in that position against his displays as a left attacking midfielder and discovered some discouraging results.

However, it appears both Richarlison and his manager Marco Silva were spurred on by the criticism. They stuck to their guns and persisted with the new role, and in the last two Gameweeks the Brazilian has registered two goals and an assist, averaging 10 points per game.

We are now revisiting the data to see whether or not Richarlison really has adapted to a striker’s role and if recent performances are sustainable or not.

I’ve gone Diangana allows me a double transfer after IB to get in Digne and Doherty as fourth and fifth defenders of with fixtures against Cardiff and Huddersfield at home. Woof. Like the look of brooks too but already have Wilson and tough fixtures and the above allows me to rotate Diangana for the city game.

I'm holding 4.1 millions in the bank, and was actually going to roll over my FT, but now Maddison happens. If I sell him for Martial, that's still 3.5 ITB. Anything worth a hit?

    Ederson - 4.0
    R A M - ABW - Bennett
    Haz - Mané - Rich - Martial* - Højbjerg
    Arnie - Vardy - Jimenez

I got exact cash for Vardy to Kane, but that feels like a gamble doomed to fail.

This Richarlison article cannot be serious - two weeks it was how Richarlison was a failure now he was playing up front and after a good GW a new article comes out saying he's adapted?!

It's impossible to take such knee jerking seriously... posting knee jerk comments is one thing but written articles for paying members? Makes me question the purpose of paying a membership fee when there's so much info and stats out there for free now.

I guess the imp point is his heat maps which show him being more central now. I like the comparison tool and rmt. The membership fee isnt steep for those 2. Plus On WC last week the paid tools helped me decide to go with Rich over Maddison so in my case membership helped me climb to 1600 overall right now

I do agree with you on the tools and I use them (but I’m a huge RMT skeptic - I think it’s statisitically flawed), especially the comparison but this stuff is becoming more freely available and I increasingly just pull the raw data myself now to compute moving exponential averages etc, stuff more advanced than here. I think any paid site or newspaper etc justifies the fee by the quality of articles and insight. As an example relating to my field, I’m not going to pay for research from a provider that one week tells me a stock is a sell and then after it outperforms tells me I should buy... I think the quality of analysis has gone down and it’s community articles that are free like Wisdom of the Crowd I’m increasingly looking at.

Don't you see a change in his play?

Yes, of course it's a small sample size, but he's passing the eye test better now, for me at least. The data can only go so far, of course, but as a hint to how things might go in the future I think it's sometimes useful to look at small sets, particularly with positional/formational changes.

Is it the absolute stances that are frustrating? Because again, for me, Richarlison has looked much better

I appreciate your reply Geoff (and the work you put in contributing to keeping the site working, posting etc).

My frustration is not over Richarlison per se - although I admit this particular article caused it to bubble over because I’m irritated at myself for even taking the original article seriously given I have a degree in maths & statistics and roll my eyes at small samples and violations of conditions necessary for analysis. My frustration is more about taking a stance and then, after the player has hauled, then completely flipping to an opposing point of view! It means credibility of future articles is damaged. Just come out and say “we had this view because of X but it’s possible we have been wrong but it’s just one game”. I don’t expect people to be right all the time - I’m certainly not right all the time and in my day job aim to be right about 60-70%. It’s impossible to be correct. But if the sample is small or you’re not sure, just mention it as a possible on the Scoutcast, make it a talking point and observe how things go. I realise we’re in an instant results world these days and people want immediate answers but I think it’s better to take time to come out with a good article with conclusions that are likely - not 100% - to be borne out. I think it’s fine to speculate and I always enjoyed that from Mark and Andy (& Luke) who would throw things out there that are not consensus. But writing an article saying one thing and then two weeks later - after a good performance - saying the opposite definitely makes me wonder about credibility going forward. If Richarlison had blanked would this article have been written? It’s worse than the many players I know and see knee jerking and transferring in the weeks best performer because this is paid content.

Articles like this are a bit of a wind up. I’d rather just a “hands up, I might be wrong but we’ll see” rather than the opposite view.

Fair points, I've passed this along to the writers.

I think you're right that it's about the nuance in articles; it's easy to make something sound like a definitive argument when what's intended is a prod for people to go look at some stats or consider something for their team. And I certainly agree that admitting when a previous stance has changed and explaining why is the best way forward.

If Richarlison had blanked this article probably wouldn't have been written, but equally people wouldn't be talking about Sterling if he hadn't hauled. Sometimes the content has to follow the points to try to explain why they've happened. That's of course not to say that it always should as we should be trying getting ahead of the points.

It seems to me that the line between a strong and full argument or point and speculation with an admission of the reasons the speculation might be wrong is what's underlying this. I really do appreciate that you've fully explained and gone into it instead of just getting mad

That Maddison news forces extra moves...What option is better?
    2ft, 0.2.itb

1)Maddison, Mitro-> Martial Jimenez (will need to play 2 out of Richa, martial and Jimenez this week then)

    3) any other options?

    Foster (Patricio)
    RAM (wb, peltier)
    Hazard Mane(c) fraser Richa (maddison)

Maddi owners- So how many points did Maddison give you?

No, done with City midfielders though would rather have Hazard. Got Aguero

Fair play. Do it! I’d prefer Sterling probably but understand the rotation is horrid

    Pat Hamer
    Alonso Mendy Lovren* Doherty AWB
    Salah Hazard Maddison* Rich Holjberg
    Kun Wilson Arnie

I had decided to save this week and hope Lovren played but the I'm not sure what to do with the Maddy news..
Maddy to Anderson looks obvious but I have Arnie already
Maddy to Fraser? Fixtures not great and have Wilson
    Maddy to Milner?
    Maddy to Pereya?
    Something more radical?

I do love how some managers can use completely contradictory info to justify their team. I'm a Haz owner but when he wasn't playing in the EL, this was great since he would be rested and raring to go at the weekend. The same people saying that now say it's great that he starts because he'll get sharpness back (after missing half a game). Basically, there are no events or circumstances that are bad for the players they happen to own...

The difference this time is hazard has barely played in a few weeks so it's more about building fitness rather than resting due to a lot of game time.

Barkley starting? What does that say about his chances of starting at weekend?

This is annoying. I planned to do Mad/Fraser/Salah > Mane/Sterling/Brooks (-4) next week. And then Mad gets injured. I am not sure how I can make it work now without doing it for -8 And losing my Salah captaincy option.
