Points ceilings and floors dominate proceedings on our latest Scoutcast as Joe, Az, Luke and Neale look over the key issues facing managers ahead of Gameweek 13.

A chief concern is who to replace red-flagged Benjamin Mendy with, after the Frenchmen underwent surgery last week. The enticing points floor of clean sheet returns offered by the full-back’s Manchester City team mates, John Stones and Aymeric Laporte, appeals to Luke.

Meanwhile, Joe prefers the higher ceiling offered by the likes of Everton left-back Lucas Digne, who has been posting some impressive underlying statistics lately to suggest attacking returns are on the way.

As well as defensive issues our community questions section also cover the value offered by Toffees assets across the pitch, and whether 12.4m priced Harry Kane is worth the outlay when Spurs fixtures turn.

Whether Anthony Martial’s six goals in his last five matches is a sign the Manchester United attacker is  in form, or merely overperforming, is also discussed.

We also find time to look back at the previous set of matches and ahead in detail to Gameweek 13, including the best differentials, strongest clean sheet prospects and our transfer plans.

Captaincy options are also considered, with the maverick selections of Az, Luke and Neale leaving dullard Joe stunned.

    Mendy on -99.5 with 30min til price changes, do we think he'll fall?

    Personally don't think he will til tomorrow, but not sure I can take that chance.

    Have exact money for Mendy/Murphy -> Bennett/Rich -4 so may have to do the Mendy move today and other one tomorrow

    We need to talk about Martial again.

    I'm seeing a lot of talk about his expected goals and how heavily he's overperforming. It's true, on pure numbers he is overperforming in relation to expected goals this season but we really should talk about what xG actually means and break it down. There's need to contextualise and see if he's actually overperforming previous Martial levels and whether the stat in the form that we consume it is 'actually' relevant to someone like him.

    There's a little breakdown here of season-by-season data( https://i.imgur.com/qY17PKC.png?1 ) to show you not just how good he's doing this season but how he's also been outperforming xG in every season he's been at United. 30 goals from 19.33 xG is not something we should be ignoring, this is an elite level of finishing in comparison to xG and with the sample size it would be foolish to just call this a purple patch. So why's he outperforming xG?

    The first take from this is that apart from one miss on the edge of the six-yard box (0.61xG) he is finishing pretty much everything with a decent xG around/slightly left of the penalty spot which is 'expected'. He isn't missing 'big chances' in the xG world per-say, although OPTA will disagree.

    The second and more important takeaway has to be his goals from outside the box and wide angles( https://i.imgur.com/SAmyZKx.png ). These are the Martial specials and this is the reason for the xG overperformance. He has been pretty good at them and will continue to do them with such consistency, especially while United's creativity is down and he has to self-create chances.

    My one sort of annoyance with Martial is definitely the quantity of shots. 2.02 shots per 90 this season is way down on the past two seasons and with the sort of shots Martial takes more is certainly the better. Looking at the fixtures we would hope that his shooting volume will increase as United dominate the ball and play more aggressively but as we know with Jose, this is not always the case.

    So Martial, the question is not based on the quality of Martial's shooting, which as we now know he's at an elite level, the question is purely based on volume/opportunity. If he can shoot he has enough quality to score. Peace.

      I remember this being a debate as soon as Martial made his debut and he scored with his first two shots if I remember correctly. His xG stats are on a par with Richarlison's (and he's actually better than Richarlison in terms of expected assists), and for some reason Richarlison is everyone's favourite captain! 😀

      Oh, and a tiny thing for future reference: it's 'per se', not 'per-say'.

          Lol, no way! I really like Richarlison, I've had him from the beginning, but I'm honestly baffled as to why he's so many people's favourite option. Reminds me of a GW last year when there was a push to captain him (I think Az did) and he scored 1 point that time. He has to show a lot more consistency before I trust him with the armband.

            Haha, it could work this week though! Mine is currently on Jimenez believe it or not! I've watched Wolves quite a bit and have been very impressed with them I must say.
            Feel Hud could be in for a bit of a drubbing in this one, despite their recent resurrgence, with Zanka + Lowe missing!

              I don't like the terms 'template', 'group think' or 'sheep' (I may have some template options in my team but I like to think I made my own decisions), but it certainly looks like the Richarlison captaincy is one of those things. Would so many people have thought of captaining Richarlison if they hadn't seen it here?

              As for Jimenez - now that's a proper differential option! Bet you the armband won't stay on him by Saturday though 😉

          I think the concern is valid but impact is over exaggerated. You don’t need him to maintain his conversion rate, even if it regresses (which I believe he will) he’s still good value for 7.6m.

          He’s on 9+ ppg over last 6 games but we should never expect him to get same ppg as hazard / Salah / Aguero. Just need him to get 5-6ppg for his price, which I think is a good possibility given fixtures and form. More so than Shaqiri who may not be nailed to play every game.

      I'd go for Laporte if were you, understand the flip side but I don't see Kane as an upgrade on Aguero right now regardless of fixtures and as you say you still have your WC if you desperately want to make the move in GW15.
