Meet the Manager #9 – Marc Rubinstein

Fantasy Premier League managers can learn a lot from the financial sector, according to our latest Meet the Manager guest Marc Rubinstein.

With three top 5,000 finishes in his FPL career, he has a strong track record of success. This is something he attributes in part to his 20 years of experience in the financial sector, including a stint as a partner for one of Europe’s largest hedge fund firms.

In our chat, Marc looks at how key financial services issues around diversification, risk management and data analysis can be applied to Fantasy Football management.

He reveals how Richarlison will help him not to lose, but not necessarily win, and why Newcastle-era Andy Carroll may well have been one of the greatest FPL investments of all time.

The battle between luck and skill is also explored and why the proliferation of expert managers and information is making it harder each year to achieve the number one spot. This theme is explored further via this Twitter thread from Marc.

But his approach is not based purely on analysis, theory and data. Marc also reveals how his emotional ties with Liverpool has a direct impact on each of his campaigns.

      Do you have transfers that you're thinking that need money ITB? If not, then I would just go Laporte.

      But if you do need some extra cash, maybe consider Brighton on Everton defence for a cheaper option.

    Who should I get for the next 3 weeks before I WC:

    A) Dunk (LEI, hud, CRY)
    B) Digne (CAR, liv, NEW) or Mina/Keane

    I think Everton's defence overall is better but they always seem to find a way to concede. Brighton have really sured up their defence this season.

      Not for a hit, I think Shaq will start, given his form and that Klopp is likely to play it safe with the 433 and Shaq on the bench v PSG, he could easily get a return v Watford.

      This is my issue. If you have Fabianski then I’d avoid Balbuena.
      Don’t fancy any Everton defenders really, so not Digne, plus his extra cost would rule out upgrading elsewhere later (Fraser to Martial).
      Dunk or Duffy, any Brighton fans got an opinion on this one?

            Bear in mind he played a lot more last season due to Costa's injury. Jimenez is the best attacking option for now but they're all susceptible to being subbed.

          The Wildcard chip can be used twice a season. The first wildcard will be available from the start of the season until 29 Dec 14:00. The second wildcard will be available after this date in readiness for the January transfer window opening and remain available until the end of the season. The Wildcard chip is played when confirming transfers that cost points and can't be cancelled once played.

        It’s not crazy really. His price is much more volatile than say Salah.

        Salah was v high ownership GW1 and is now in a lot of dead teams that hold his value, either from rising or falling.

        Hazard was low ownership GW1 due to late return from World Cup etc. Therefore when he wagonned his price went up very quickly, as his base ownership was low. Now those people have lost faith and are shipping.

        There are two types of casuals: those that give up and those that don’t.
