Fantasy Premier League managers can learn a lot from the financial sector, according to our latest Meet the Manager guest Marc Rubinstein.

With three top 5,000 finishes in his FPL career, he has a strong track record of success. This is something he attributes in part to his 20 years of experience in the financial sector, including a stint as a partner for one of Europe’s largest hedge fund firms.

In our chat, Marc looks at how key financial services issues around diversification, risk management and data analysis can be applied to Fantasy Football management.

He reveals how Richarlison will help him not to lose, but not necessarily win, and why Newcastle-era Andy Carroll may well have been one of the greatest FPL investments of all time.

The battle between luck and skill is also explored and why the proliferation of expert managers and information is making it harder each year to achieve the number one spot. This theme is explored further via this Twitter thread from Marc.

But his approach is not based purely on analysis, theory and data. Marc also reveals how his emotional ties with Liverpool has a direct impact on each of his campaigns.

      Im sorry mate, i agree... Many good options here, hard to give good advice. But if i had a gun to my head, and i had to choose one.
      Id choose B. Dunno why, gut feeling.

      Why not Maddison to Felipe? I know City game and all, but show AWB into the mix for the next GW. Felipe will most definately give you something back after that. Then you have 2 FTs again next week.

      Salah is in good form atm. Scored for Egypt and had good games prior for Liverpool where you can see improvement. If you are going to punt on Richarlison as a captain, then this is the game to do it. Personally going for Salah.

      Have Rich, Salah and Hazard and im going for Hazard - i dont think spurs have much of a chance since they have a do or die game on tuesday in the CL. Hazard will play 90 min and should score more than 1. GO for Haz

      The games after IB are often banana peels.

      Cardiff have nary an international player, 2 full weeks of planning against Everton. Arguably, Watford isn't star-studded as well, but Liverpool on a low gear is at least equal to Everton on a high.

      Richarlison is also a bit of a troll, no returns in their 3-0 win. Think Salah is so much safer and having Rich in the squad is good enough.

        Nice points - just so you know Richarlison is better owned in top 10K than Salah, but I don't know how many will be brave enough to captain him. Think I will end up playing it safe with Salah this week but can see another Salah 8 pointer and a Rich 15 pointer

        Wish I had the balls to put Rich as C, but just got a nagging feeling that he will blank.. don't know why, but just feel it would be typical, the one time I gamble on my C. So mine is on Aguero at the moment, but have Rich, Sterling, Salah and Aguero to choose from.

    Now with Mendy out for a couple of weeks at least, we should be assured Sane is going to get more minutes for this City team. He has 50 points from only 5 starts, with only 1 of those starts not completing the 90 min, while averaging 9 points per 90 minutes. Given City have almost progressed in the CL, We should see more rotation for the CL and players rested, but Pep's intent will be to concentrate more in the PL now and gain advantage over the likes of Liverpool who still have tough CL fixtures to play. With Mendy out, he will ideally play Sane in most games to give him the width in the wide area. What are your thoughts on Sane minutes as long as Mendy is out?

          I thought I had heard he was actually one of the fastest players in the league.

          Nothing wrong with holding a 4.5 option like him for the moment, IMO. Hard to pick a third stand-out striker.

          Despite being flavour of the month, Jiminez can't hit a barn door. Success is still getting minutes, but in dangers of losing his spot once his form drops. Ings is likely injured, Wilson costs a bit more/tougher fixtures, etc.

          However, Ranieri has said he hasn't found his second strike partner for Mitrovic yet and will invest in January, which doesn't bode well for ol' Kammy.
