How do we best utilize our three Manchester City spots in the coming weeks

As the holidays are approaching rapidly and gameweeks are coming thick and fast it leaves us managers pondering how to keep a good and healthy bench while also maximizing the points potential of league leaders Manchester City, using our allotted three spots. Pep Guardiola has a very deep and talented squad so rotation is inevitable, but the potential for double-digit hauls are always looming each and every time the player you have selected is present in the team sheets.

Many of us (53,6% at the time of writing) have Sergio Aguero in our squads, and while he has returned a more than respectable 14 attacking returns in 13 gameweeks, there are some concerns over his away form. In six away games he’s only registered one goal, zero assists, and no bonus points. It is obviously worth noting that he’s faced off against Arsenal, Liverpool, and Tottenham in three of those games. Only one goal against Cardiff, Wolves, and West Ham does however not particularly flatter the mercurial striker.

Whether this is all circumstantial or a part of Peps tactics is debatable but the sample size is starting to grow enough for conclusions to be made, although we probably need three or four more away games against non top-six sides to say so for sure. Personally, I still believe he can shake off this issue and start racking up points away from the Etihad Stadium as well but it is something to consider, especially when Harry Kane is starting to come to life again with nice fixtures for Tottenham in the coming month.

As far as the midfield goes Raheem Sterling looks fantastic and is arguably a better captaincy option than Aguero. In the absence of Benjamin Mendy, Leroy Sané is once again shining on the left-hand side and should be given ample opportunity to do so over the coming weeks. Rotation is to be expected and the more City mids you’ve got, the more important it becomes to have a good bench as cover. As far as Sterling goes he’s so far started eleven out of thirteen gameweeks, racking up seven goals, seven assists, and eleven bonus points. In the games he started on the bench he also did not feature as a substitute, making sure the annoying one point cameo has yet to be an issue. This, of course, cannot be relied upon to always be the case and it will depend on the development of each game, but it does still remain noteworthy. The same cannot be said of Sané with plenty of late substitutions from the bench to his name (four games with less than 15 minutes played and one game playing 28 minutes, as well as not featuring twice this season).

David Silva, Riyad Mahrez, and Bernardo Silva are also midfield options to be considered, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.  The currently injured  Kevin De Bruyne is someone to keep an eye on as well, although Pep probably won’t rush him back to in order to avoid another setback. The current pick of the bunch appears to be David Silva who has seemingly abandoned his traditional penchant for assists and is starting to make up for it by scoring goals, as he’s scored a solitary goal in three consecutive gameweeks.

In defence the popular pick after Mendy’s injury seems to be Aymeric Laporte (15,9% owned) closely followed by Kyle Walker (14,3%). As the fourth and fifth highest scoring defenders so far this season they make a strong case for their inclusion in our squads, depending on formation and willingness to “sacrifice” a Man City attacking spot for a defender who will get plenty of clean sheets, but rarely see any bonus. The security of starts is, however, nothing to be scoffed at as it has allowed Laporte (64 points) and Walker (60 points) to pretty much match the way more expensive Sané (69 points) and David Silva (66 points).
John Stones, and Fabian Delph remains in the somewhat more rotatable category for now, although a case can be made for both of them if the money is tight and you are shopping for a defender. Ederson is still a more than capable set and forget goalkeeper, even if he is prone to the odd howler from pretty much nowhere at times.

So how do we best utilize our three Manchester City spots in the coming weeks?

In the end, it comes down to individual team structure and faith in replacements for any current City player who you may transfer out.

For instance, the options for people who want to get rid of Aguero is most likely Kane or Aubameyang if the plan isn’t to make a downgrade and spread the cash in midfield or defence. People who are looking to (for whatever reason) get rid of Ederson is best served by Alisson or downgrading to a budget/mid-priced keeper.

If we choose to ignore what players you may or may not currently have in your squad I think there is a very strong argument for doubling up with Sterling and Sané over the coming weeks. Sure, there will be rotation but both of these players are more than capable of getting double-digit returns each game they play. For the final spot, it gets a bit more tricky. Arguably having Aguero, Sterling, and Sane may be putting too many eggs (and too much money) in the Manchester City attacking basket, as tempting as that basket may indeed be…

Given the lack of solid goalkeeper options, I think Ederson makes a strong case for inclusion, although I would expect roughly the same returns from Laporte and Stones. There is, however, a larger pool of potential defenders who could do equally well in the coming weeks (for instance, the people doubling up with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson surely aren’t complaining lately). For me, the ultimate combination is Ederson, Sterling and Sané but if you’re looking for treble Manchester City attack, my personal suggestion is David Silva, Sterling, and Sané going into December.

Best of luck to all of you!

What are your Manchester City plans going forward?

Why are you picking the players you are? Why are you avoiding the ones you aren't choosing?

      Picked SAS !!
They can rip apart any team !
Not picking Dilva because of his age he is huge rotation risk over busy schedule !!
Defense Ederson+Laporte are good and consistent but will need extra cash for other bench players during Christmas period so staying away nd choosing Fabs !!
Will probably transfer out kun as soon as he gets rotated(jesus injury) !!

Best three options to own imo: Ederson should play every game, perfect set and forget and covers arguably what will be the best defence in the league this season. Sterling, who I must eat my hat on, looks better than ever and explosive as hell! Kun is obviously Pep's first choice striker and is more than proven in the league!

This week, Salah to Sterling (c). Keep Aguero and Ederson.

      GW15 - Aguero to Kane.
GW16 - Hazard and Arnie to Mane and Lacazette

Feels weird to be getting rid of Salah, Aguero and Hazard in consecutive weeks but Sterling, Kane and Mane - plus Laca in for Arnie with the money saved - will hopefully do the trick and gives me the captain choices I want in the next 6-7 weeks.

Just Silva and Sané for me, both great value for money. I think £11m+ is just a bit too much to have sat on the bench. Very unpopular opinion here but Hazard > Sterling for Christmas in terms of minutes and fixtures.

Mate, Sterling has scored 39 points in the last three games. Add a 1 point for a shirt show from the bench and it’s still 40 in 4.

I remember having a very similar conversation about Barkley on here just weeks ago. Granted, Sterling is no Barkley, I rate him highly. But you have to look forward, and it's no insult to be shunned for Hazard with Fulham. Wolves, Brighton, Leicester, Southampton, Watford and Palace in the next 9. Haz is also much more nailed.

Just did Salah -> Sterling and i can also squeeze in Sane for Barkley.
Unfortunately the Sane move forces me to take a hit and downgrade Sigurdsson if i want Kane next gameweek.

Ultimately i'l end up transferring in David Silva or Sane for Barkley before the deadline today. Silva gives me more flexibility.

Note: Pretty much all my moves have gone wrong this season and i have a bad feeling the Sterling move will bite me hard this gameweek. Hopefully Sterling will end up with more points than Salah in the next month.

Went Aguerro > Sterling a few GWs ago and last night finally ditched Hazard for Sane. I had planned to go Hazard > Alli or Eriksen next GW but I am not hopeful that Hazard and Sterling will feature this GW, but Sane looks nailed on.

So, I've got Sterling and Sane (C) this GW.

Regards the defender options; I have TAA & Robbo alongside Trippier and Alonso so as much as Mendy's absence makes Delph attractive, I can't see the worth of swapping any of those for him or upgrading AWB.

As for goalies; too much money to upgrade my £4.5 pair to City's stopper.

Very simply, after 13 weeks, the 5 best value/season City options are defensive, including Fernandinho, so obtaining one is a must... Of the next six, Sterling is 8.4 highest and Agüero is 7.1 lowest, so not a huge difference when Ederson is 11.7. Therefore, methinks there are two strategies and nothing else, either 1 City defender and 2 midfielders if you dislike Agüero, or 1 City defender, 1 midfielder and Agüero... It's your call... Currently I just have Agüero but with my saved transfer for next week, I will acquire 2 more; a defender and a midfileder...

Value is only good to a certain point. It's points that matter. With limited slots, if you only go after value in each slot / team slots, you will end up with lots of ITB. Need to utilize them somewhere. So, even if Fernandinho is better value and costs half as much as Sterling, he has only half as much points.

Entirely agree and would neve acquire Fernandinho. However, top 3 out of 24 slots of value/defenders belong to City players, who are not cheap, meaning that with a City defender I can guarantee good value points. My point is that you need 3 City assets going forward and one might just as well be a defender.

I have similar thinking at the moment. City's defence is so strong that I'm reluctant to lose a 5.5-6m player who gets clean sheets every week. The mids and Aguero look great but there's plenty other options to limit to 2 attackers in my team. Plus, the mids look so much more involved in the city attack, it's frustrated me owning aguero for so long when this was obvious.

I intend to bring in Lacazette and Sane for Aguero and Barkley next week, which I think is a good switch and it means I have Laporte, Sane and Sterling.

I could lose Laporte to keep Aguero, but I like to have at least 3 solid defenders and this will simplify my route to Trippier if i decide to get him when he's fit.

I have a similar line of thinking. One thing is for sure, with so many options available, I will not have Sterling and Agüero together. That seems an expensive combination where Dilva, Mahrez, Sane and soon KDB exists. Your trio is my ideal too. If I decide to drop Hazard and Salah, then Sterling and Sane will allow me to get Kane...

Totally different rationales yet we land on the same trio 🙂

I sold Salah for Sterling. I'm defo keeping Hazard. Very unlikely to get Kane. I could justify keeping Aguero but it feels like such a good time to bring in Sane and Laca, especially over holding Barkley! I might not have considered Laca at all had I not realised my budget just allows it, so that'll need closer inspection.
