Captains

Captain Sensible – Aguero and Salah in close call for Gameweek 30

Liverpool and Manchester City options look to be the key players in the Gameweek 30 captaincy debate.

Both sides face crucial home fixtures in the Premier League title race and some of their key players have a strong case for the armband.

The Captain Sensible article is here once again to analyse the data of these assets in plenty of detail, as well as the attacking statistics of their teams and defensive capabilities of their opponents.

Captain Poll

In one of the closest calls of the season, it’s been neck-and-neck between Mohamed Salah (£13.4m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.8m) all week in the captain poll. The Egyptian took the lead on Monday but by late Tuesday, the Manchester City man had overtaken him.

At the time of writing, Salah is back on top but not by much. Ahead of Burnley’s trip to Anfield, he has the backing of 28.7% while Aguero has 28.67%.

The secondary options from both clubs are also in the top five with Raheem Sterling (£11.4m) garnering 10% support and Sadio Mané (£9.8m) on 4%.

Jamie Vardy (£8.9m) is the only member of the top five not to play for Liverpool or Manchester City. With Leicester hosting Fulham on Saturday afternoon, the forward has the backing of 4.5% in the vote.

The differential options for Gameweek 30 include some important candidates from previous rounds of fixtures. Paul Pogba (£9.0m) is the best of the rest with 2.3% while Harry Kane (£12.4m) has 1.87% support.

Wilfried Zaha (£6.8m), Eden Hazard (£10.8m) and Patrick van Aanholt (£5.4m) and Michy Batshuayi (£6.5m) are the only other options with more than 1% backing.

    Is it worth doing:

Salah and Son to Hazard and Mane?

Depends on your chip strategy, but I would be using one of my FTs to transfer Salah out before his GW31/33 matches.

Looking to bring in two of the following for 31 and 33 (FH 32). Want at least one of them to be a super differential pick.

    Pick two :

    Maddison
    Tielemans
    Felipe Anderson
    Lanzini
    Almirón

Struggling to decide for this week (and prep 31):
    A) Laca -> Vardy [think Laca will do alright against Utd and good fixtures after blank]
    B) Pogba -> Brooks [lots of value in Pogba, but think time right to lose]
    C) Jimenez -> King [only small value gain in Jimenez]

Like B, but means playing Barnes, Laca and/or Jimenez as my forwards this week....

Managers, does anyone know/have a link informing of the possible DGW permutations after GW32 (other than 35)?

Currently wondering if there is merit to WC this week:

    - set up for GW 30, 31 and 33.
    - FH for 32
-Save FT for 33, giving 2 for 34.

At this point it doesn't seem a bad idea; dealing with the known instead of the unknown.

    Thoughts??

    Current WC Template:

    Guaita
    Chilwell, Azp, TAA
    (S)terling, Mane, Maddison, Brooks
    Arnie, Vardy, Higuain

    Boruc, Rice, Pogba, Shaw

I may have got this wrong but I think wildcarding now means you will struggle to fill your team with doubles for the GW35 DGW.

Theres so many possibilities for a DGW in 35 at this point, its impossible to plan until after GW 31. I think most teams will struggle not to have half the team playing twice - looks like the right time for a BB chip. It's whether you sacrifice points in 30, 31 and 33 to get the best team out for 35.

Man city look likely to have Cardiff and Fulham in GW32 (have a blank in 33), to me playing a FH chip here and having Man city, Man U, maybe wolves players (out width Jiminez - no one looking essential) looks like the right move. The DGW's for Man U and City in 35 aren't all that appealing.

When it comes to captain choices does anyone ever factor in the difference in point scoring for forwards and midfielders? Whenever there's a close call I always seem to side with the midfielder because they get an extra point for a goal and there's a potential clean sheet point on offer. Given how many attacking (almost forward like) midfielders there now are, should FPL consider midfielders and forwards using the same scoring system?

    1. DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy
      • 10 Years
      5 years, 2 months ago

i think the clean sheet point is wrong as many strikers do their defensive share. why should Salah get one over Firmino for example?

Exactly my point. Even the likes of Sterling v Aguero. If they each get one goal in a 2-0 win Sterling gets more points awarded to him. Doesn't feel right anymore for me. I get it 'back in the day' when midfielders used to play deeper than forwards but I think times have changed. So many midfielders now play as forwards.

I do yes, I always prefer to captain a midfielder if possible, Salah, Sterling over Aguero, and Pogba over Rashford for example.
Other things, such as rotation risk, and form, come into play of course.

But then Strikers get more bonus for goals, correct me if I’m wrong but I think it’s 24 striker and 16 for a mdf..

          That's true.
But Hazard has more BPS points this season than Aguero.
and Sterling and Salah have more than Kane.

I think I'm leaning towards Salah. It's a tough call between Sterling or Aguero. I think Aguero is more likely to score a goal with penalties and his general positioning. If you own both I think you're good anyway.

Hi, I’m one of the minority whose plan is to FH31, so building a team for 32 and 33 here with a WC in 34

    Patricio Hamer
    Shaw Kola WB Bamba Bennet
    Salah Sterling Pogba Anderson Camarasa
    Aguero Jiminez Rashford
    2 FT, 0.3 itb

I've discussed something similar above - basically saying that I now find it a little odd that midfielders score more points than forwards when in reality most play in very similar positions. I would love them to really shake things up and split midfielders into 'defensive' and 'attacking' brackets. Or change attacking midfielders into forwards but increase the quantity you can own.

      1. HamezMace
        • 9 Years
        5 years, 2 months ago

That would be interesting. When this has come up before, and people have said Salah should be a forward, I've argued that really he plays the same position as Hazard, Sterling, Mane, Zaha, Sanchez, Martial, Son etc etc. and it's better to have them as midfielders, rather than any attacking player being a striker, and then we have to pick 5 holding midfielders, like Jorginho, Dier, Matic, Fernandinho etc for 2/3 points every week.

The idea of an extra line in the formation - so you pick 3 defenders - 2 defensive mids - 3 attacking mids - 2 strikers would be an interesting dynamic.

    3. Pras (FPL)

        I love a good analogy.
but you're right, based on heat maps, Kane and Firmino become mids, and Salah/Son become forwards - I'd be okay with that!

They do play Champions league less than 3 days later. I know league should be priority but I am slightly nervous on the Liverpool team.

    benbreakfasty:

Jefferson Lerma comes back into contention having served his two-match ban. Callum Wilson (knee) is pushing for a recall following a full week of training. Saturday comes too soon for Junior Stanislas (hip flexor) and Dominic Solanke (thigh) is rated as a major doubt. #AFCB#

That's really not helped my decision making! I really want Wilson but King is the more conservative option.

Which players do you fear not owning for GW31? I'd like to have at least 4/5 of these going into next week personally.

    Robertson
    TAA
    VVD
    Salah
    Mane
    Hazard
    Vardy

I would never ever fear not owning Vardy.

Fair enough, I think he is the only striker that has potential to score a decent haul of points over the next couple of weeks.

If you have the money go for Luiz or Azpi, assuming you are maxed out on Liverpool. As a bonus Chelsea will likely have a GW32 double.
