The FPL lessons learned from Wolves’ Europa League debut

Wolves 2-0 Crusaders

Goals: Diogo Jota (£6.5m), Ruben Vinagre (£4.5m)

Assists: Adama Traoré (£5.0m), Joao Moutinho (£5.5m)

Diogo Jota (£6.5m) picked up where 2018/19 left off as he scored Wolves first competitive goal of the new campaign.

Amid plenty of Fantasy interest this summer, the Portuguese international gave his side a deserved lead in the 37th minute at Molineux.

Loitering in the penalty box he pulled off a piece of exceptional technique as he slammed in Adama Traoré‘s (£5.0m) cross, which came in just behind him, on the half-volley.

In their first proper fixture of 2019/20, Nuno Espirito Santo retained Wolves’ 3-5-2 system which helped them to great success last term.

Fantasy managers will have been pleased to see the wing-backs continuing to play an important part in Wolves’ attacking play.

Traoré, standing in for the injured Matt Doherty (£6.0m), was effectively playing as a wide-forward on the right and it was this space that allowed him to cross for Jota’s first goal.

Meanwhile, Jonny (£5.5m) added found himself in plenty of space on the left, while it was his replacement Ruben Vinagre (£4.5m) whose advanced positioning led to the third goal.

Joao Moutinho (£5.5m) played a ball into the box from deep, where Vinagre was waiting at the back post and he was able to tuck the ball away after goalkeeper Sean O’Neill allowed it to squirm through his grasp.

It must be said that the end-product of the wing-backs was a little inconsistent on the night but it is still early days in pre-season so this might be an area that improves closer to Gameweek 1.

Elsewhere in the team, there was another start at centre-forward for budget midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.0m).

He has been deployed alongside Jota in all three of Wolves’ pre-season matches now, including the Europa League win over Crusaders, scoring against Newcastle and offering the outside chance of an exceptional out-of-position opportunity this season.

However, we do just have to temper any excitement over Gibbs-White as a Fantasy asset this year with some disclaimers.

The first is that he had been playing up-front while Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m) was absent from friendly matches as a result of his extended leave following the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

After his time off, the Mexican is already back in the Wolves fold, named on the bench on Thursday night and coming on in the 58th minute.

With two weeks to go until Gameweek 1, we have to assume that Jiménez will be working towards starting at Leicester on Sunday, August 11.

However, Doherty might also hold the key here as it is his injury that is forcing Nuno to deploy Traoré at right wing-back.

If Doherty is back in time for Gameweek 1, then Traoré might also be in the frame for a centre-forward berth if Jiménez is not necessarily ready in time.

On the injury front, Wolves will currently be sweating on the fitness of central midfielder Ruben Neves (£5.5m).

He was replaced in the 58th minute with a side injury and was taken to hospital after the game for scans.

“(Neves) is struggling. Let’s see. It was a hard knock and he’s in pain now. We will take care of him.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Jota (right) had several chances to score against Crusaders

How much we can take forward from this game is tricky to assess though.

Obviously, the level of opposition Wolves faced was not exactly at Premier League level. Crusaders finished fourth in last season’s Northern Ireland Premiership, qualifying for the Europa League through winning the Irish Cup.

Furthermore, the club only offered players their first professional contracts at the start of last season.

For that reason, many might have expected Wolves to win by a bigger margin but there are still a few mitigating factors here.

Crusaders spent virtually the entire game sitting in a compact formation, with two banks of five, in an attempt to frustrate Wolves’ play. That’s a difficult prospect for even top-flight teams, especially at this early stage of pre-season.

“It’s tough, the season starts earlier. Players come in on different dates.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Despite the Irish side trying to make things difficult for them, Wolves still managed to fire off 30 shots (10 on target) and visiting goalkeeper O’Neill was a busy man all night, working particularly hard to thwart Jota.

“We showed we are ready but not as sharp and accurate as we should be.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Wolves XI (3-5-2): Patrício; Boly, Coady, Bennett; Jonny (Vinagre 64′), Neves (Jiménez 58′), Moutinho, Dendoncker, Traoré; Jota, Gibbs-White (Saïss 85′).

Douglas Luiz - anyone know much about him and where he might fit in at Villa? Priced as a 4.5m midfielder on FPL so could be gold. Just joined them for £15m from Man City.

Pep was nurturing him into the Fernandinho role. Maybe the Rodri purchase made the boy decide to quit. I've no idea how good he is though.

He didn't get work permit in 2018, that's why he was loaned to Girona for the second time. If he stayed at City this year he wouldn't get it either. The fee + wages mean he can get it at AV.

So a rotation between 4-3-3 and 3-4-3, right?

Lack of City altogether is gonna hurt you bad. Barnes/Taylor have really rough fixtures. Would hate to be starting Jorginho and praying for penalties.

        All good points.

Yes, playing a 4-3-3 to start of GW 1, then 3-4-3 after that.

I guess I want to see which City player other than Sterling makes an impact first.

Last season I had high hopes with Jorginho, but he flopped. I do feel he has assist potential, pens are a bonus, but yes, it was a primary reason for getting him. But its only my first draft and I like 9-10 player in there.

That makes no sense - if you don’t think they’ll score many at least go for the one that’s more likely to be involved? Or just avoid altogether? At the end of the day though, it’s Bournemouth, so it’s always a lottery whether they’ll draw 3-3 or get pummelled 4-0

Is anyone considering going with the second CB that pairs with VVD in the community shield? Say it's Gomez for example. Sure they may not have the same goal or bps threat as him but for purely clean sheet potential and the extra 1m that can turn a zinch to a laporte etc. it has to be worth serious consideration?

I think those were the first names on everyones teamsheet then slowly a lot of us have had to pick one and downgrade the other. TAA and Gomez/Matip with a 5.5 def sounds good to me.

I'm sure Klopp will rotate Matip, Gomez, Lovren.

Example: Super Cup against Chelsea is only 3 days before GW2 and I doubt VVD will have the same partner in both of those games, so it's hard to predict.

    4. ★Kuntheman★

I'd be more inclined to do it if Gomez is the starter in the CS. If he starts at CB and only plays RB when they bench TAA for Matip, I'd take Gomez+VVD. If Matip starts, then I have to fear the rotation directly with Gomez and I have no other way of seeing him making the team.

      Off top of head:

      New CDM role.
      Lucas Moura.
      No Son.
      August curse.

Ive recently added Kane to my draft. His August curse was broken last yr I thought? His price point also allows a downgrade at F and upgrade at MF if need be.

The biggest pro is that captaincy between him and Sterling is amazing for the first 16 weeks (except week 2) and this lets me have triple Liverpool defence as I don't need Salah.
I realise this didn't answer the question.

Nothing. He could feasibly Boss it from the start and all of us FFS Guru's will be burning their Sterling Barby dolls.

Pope / Ryan (rotation, either one could become another 4.5)
    TAA / VVD / Laporte / Coleman / Cathcart
    Salah / Sterling / Fraser
    King / Vardy

    Good to go?

Pros are Salah, Sterling, TAA/VVD, and Vardy. Obvious cons are Cathcart and maybe King.

Trouble is no money for a premium.

I could stick with Pope and improve Cathcart, but don't really see that much of a difference from him to the 5.0s

That would be one hell of a suggestion. Trouble is I'm at a 5-3-2 and I don't really see any good 5.5 mids.

I'm on a 5-3-2 and my weak point is that 5.5 starting mid. I've put Ceballos in there today in the hope that he's a Ramsey-sort. But I don't know yet. Another way would be to do as Matty says but also shave 0.5 Laporte>Walker. There are good mid options at 6m.

there's quite a few teams with 4 and even 5 starting defenders, and I was considering 4 as well, but will stick with 3-4-3. And not going to double up on Pool. There's a slight concern that defs will outscore forwards, but if there's something I don't want to be template in my team - that's uberheavy defence, and finally attacking trio clicked in price as well.

  18. sirmorbach

Lads, I have a team I like but everyone here seems to recommend not going with GK rotation. That leaves me with 0.5 itb.

My obvious weak spots are a 4.5 goalkeeper, Cathcart, and maybe King. What wold you do with the extra 0.5?

I don't really see that much of a difference from the 4.5s to the 5.0s either on goal or defence. I could maybe keep it and King-Chelsea striker whenever that is settled.

    What do you think?

I'm a big fan of having one decent sub and rotating due to fixtures. That safety buffer stops so many last minute transfers when someone gets injured and you still have a decent team if someone is dropped.

Great team. Love the fact that you have a decent bench player. People are deluding themselves with lots of players in their teams that are rotation risks (Zinchenko, TAA, Perez, Deulofeu, Jota etc, even Sterling...) and still having absolute zilch on the bench.

    Hi all,

Appreciate your thoughts on my team!

    Beg
    VVD Cathcart Laporte
    Salah Lennon Sterling Maddison

      - Origi a waste of money at 5.5. Go with Greenwood for 1.0 savings...
      - Begovic is not even nailed. Boruc will get minutes. Go with Pope or Ryan.
      - Upgrade Lennon
      - Delph to Coleman or Zinchenko

I don't know why everyone isn't snapping up Arsenal Players with Newcastle in GW 1. It certainly seems like a better plan than triple Bournemouth which is everywhere. Torreira's Points Per Minute last season wasn't that bad. Its better than just about everyone in that price bracket. So I expect him to grab assists pretty regularly. My only worry is Yellow cards.

All that said...its pretty unlikely he stays in my team

Ceballos at 5.5 could be the greatest steal and punt of them all. I've watched the lad play at U21 european championship this year and he's like a baby Isco. I hope he'll be above Ozil in pecking oder and play behind Auba and Laca
