Premium defenders appeal ahead of new Sky Sports Fantasy Football season

Fantasy managers looking to make the most of premium defenders might enjoy playing Sky Sports Fantasy Football this season.

Premium options at the back came to the fore in the 2017/18 instalment of the popular Fantasy game and there is every chance they could prove to be key assets this time around.

There were five defenders among Sky Sports Fantasy‘s top 10 point-scorers last season, a new record and more than any other position.

With Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola bringing possession football and hugely attacking full-backs to the Premier League, Andrew Robertson (12 assists) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (11 assists) impressed in 2018/19.

However, it was their Dutch colleague Virgil van Dijk who stole the headlines, finishing both as the top-scoring defender in Sky Sports Fantasy Football last season and the highest scorer in any position.

His 299 points, averaging 7.9 per match were recorded as van Dijk won the Champions League, PFA Player of the Year and helped his national side to reach the UEFA Nations League final.

His statistics in Sky Sports Fantasy Football led to him offering an excellent captain option most weeks too, which is why he is expected to be popular again in 2019/20.

Van Dijk kept a total of 20 clean sheets and scored four goals while also performing well for bonus points. He hit tier-one and tier-two passing bonus points on a combined total of 27 occasions.

Fantasy Football Scout Members can access the passing bonus statistics for Sky in the Members Area.

Ahead of the new season, they can also analyse which players look best for tackle bonus as well.

Aymeric Laporte, who came second overall, managed to do hit bonus an impressive 28 times, with 25 of those coming from tier two (70 or more passes in a single game).

That contributed an additional 75 points to his overall tally of 269 in 2018/19. The Frenchman scored 30.57 points-per-million (£8.8m last year), more than any other player, proving a valuable and pivotal pick for Sky Sports Fantasy Football bosses.

As you can see, Manchester City and Liverpool’s exciting title challenge last year heralded a new era in Sky Sports Fantasy Football, with the focus shifting more towards defenders.

Cesar Azpilicueta was the only defender to rank inside the top 10 points scorers in 2016/17, finishing in ninth position.

In fact, the Spanish international was the first defender in the history of the game to achieve this feat and he has since repeated it in both of the two most recent seasons.

From 2016 to 2019, Azpilicueta has amassed an impressive total of 669 points highlighting the point-pulling power that centre-backs or full-backs (he has played in both positions) now possess.

In 2017/18, just four points separated Nicolas Otamendi (244) and Cesar Azpilicueta (240) as they took up the fourth and fifth positions respectively. Otamendi registered 14 clean sheets and found the back of the net four times, while Azpilicueta capped 15 clean sheets with two goals and assists. Both players earned valuable Sky Sports Fantasy Football points from unlikely and underestimated positions.

With the emphasis more than ever on defenders, there is enough value in each player to be convinced that they are worth researching as much as the attacking stars.

Their point-scoring has increased year-on-year; who knows what the top five or 10 players in Sky Sports Fantasy Football will look like in 12 months’ time?

After the news I like heaton + Pope. How does this look?

    Heaton Pope
    Robbo TAA Stones Taylor Lund
    Sterling Salah Perez Ceballos 4.5
    Lacca Wilson 4.5

Is he? I read people comparing him to Ramset and Santi Carloza.
Having just dumped Robby due to McBurnie signing, I've just switched to Cabby for my 5.5 slot.

Good chance he'll play behind a front 3 of laca, auba and pepe so could become a bargain.

Is having Perez, Zinch and McGinn too punty? Allows to have Salah, Sterling and Kane though...

5.5m for a defender isn't punty at all.
Perez is a good pick regardless.
...a 5.5m midfielder is the compromise for having the SSK combination.

If you're not happy with Zinchenko, get Norwood/Jorginho/Kante instead of McGinn and get another 6m defender.

I get what you mean, but with VAR coming in, I can see more penalties being given this year, that’s the reason for Kane and Siggy (yes Vardy is on pens, but I can’t see him getting max game time) plus set pieces, owned by KDB and again Siggy

That's a myth, you can look up how it turned out in other leagues when VAR was introduced. WC an anomaly.
People forget VAR removes dodgy pens too

Same front three as I currently have. Some goals from midfield no doubt as well with two playing upfront essentially. Just question marks over Pope and Zin’s spots but they might be cleared up in the next week or so.

    Another draft without Salah:

    Alisson
    Laporte, Azpi, Walker, VVD
    Moura, Sterling, Tielmans, Fraser
    Kane, Wood
    Button, Greenwood, Moutinho, Lundstram

Any thoughts? I don't want to go with L'pool front line since none of them had time to rest after long season. This is why I opted for Sterling+Kane as premium options, with strong defense.
Let me know what you think.

Azpilicueta isn't a strong defense option really. Look at Chelsea's pre season record so far. Very unlikely, we will get many Cs. At 6.0, digne is a better with good fixtures

    Kinda back with:

    King / Deul (Wickham)

Have you? Give Wood or Barnes, or any attacker with their salt 24 starts & 6 sub appearances anywhere in the juve attack & they'd easily match that

Mate, Dybala doesn't even play as a striker. He's mostly used as a N.10 and stayed behind both Ronaldo and Mandzukic in the games he played last season. I really don't get the point you're trying to make.

My point is that output is shockingly low for a player of such supposed quality? How many games have you watched him play?

Apparently more than you, because comparing him to Wood/Barnes both in terms of positioning on the field and technical ability or anything really just lacks basic football knowledge and intelligence. Sorry for being the one to tell you this.

So genuine question, is he being signed to play as a centre forward, with Rashford RW, and Martial LW.
Or is he going to play in the No.10 role that Mata/Lingard have played preseason..with Rashford remaining up front?

He still isn't a striker mate, he is a 25-year old attacking player with
103G and 46A in 288 apps. I hope to not see his name with some Burnley strikers again 🙂

Splitting hairs - any player worth their salt can play a little deeper or a little wider if they're asked - give Barnes or Wood those appearances in that Juve attack and they're easily matching that output - again World Class on FIFA does not equal world class 😉

So how have you been observing him? have you been flying to Turin to watch him? Or watching his Juve games live? Or YouTube reels? Or playing FIFA? Or maybe a combination of all of the above?

Trying to argue he is world class is thoroughly strange - you seem to have ignored the facts that If he was world class he'd (a) be starting regularly and (b) would have a much higher output

5G, 5A in 30 appearances... In Serie A... In the juventus attack...

                    World class... Jesus wept 🙂

What does Liverpool have to do in this.. He's far behind the likes of Salah and Mané, so who cares who ManUtd are signing.

What do you think? Because he hates Man Utd and will criticize them no matter what. He's far behind..No he is not. He had a bad year last year. And his game is not based on goals, like Salah's. He's a very good playmaker.

5 assists? In 30 appearances? In Serie A? In the Juventus attack? Playmaker extraordinaire 🙂

As I said above, I'm a Utd fan, and the last thing Utd need is another over paid, overrated, underperfoming big name 'superstar'

They have enough of those as it is

You guys carry on. My squad is full so I'll just sit back and see how the first few GWs pan out.

Got no figures to back this up, but seems to me over 50% of megastars who joining the PL take a while to settle, if they do at all. All of my Starting XI are experienced in the PL and 10 of them are PL and/or CL champions. Anyone new to PL is a punt in my book.

I’ve heard it all now... Dybala being compared to Wood and Barnes!
Dybala is amazing! I’ve watched quite a few games with my Juventus supporting friend. He’s lethal but any player whose just a bit part player will struggle for form. IMO Huge upgrade from Lukaku with a point to prove, particularly given how OGS wants to play

He's absolute class, you're way off here.

If you put a bag of crisps into the Juve attack for 30 appearances last season it would have a good go at matching Dyabala's output

Not sure why you're so keen to bang this drum.

How would the bag of crisps/Lukaku/Woods/Barnes have done against his 27 goal involvements from 33 appearances (2017/18)? Or 18/31 (2016/17)? Or 27/34 (2015/16)?

It's almost like something dramatic happened to change the dynamic of the team he worked in last year. Weird.

Fair play to him, Pele had a good season or two, would you want him starting next season?

My point is that Utd have enough over paid, underperfoming, overrated so called 'superstars' - they don't need another one, I don't even want to see the transfer fee

Really no need to be so facetious. You pointed out he had a bad season, I pointed out he had 3 good ones before that.

He will almost certainly be overpaid, but you can't know he'll underperform. Personally I expect him to underperform by his own standards, but because of the club not the player.

Fair enough you're frustrated with your club but that doesn't justify your hastily formed opinion on a player that you've blatantly never seen play.

Btw we've all read the thread, we know you don't want to see the fee.

You haven't seen me being facetious 😉

I know how he performed last season - he got 30 appearances in one of the best attacks in Europe and his output was shocking - which brings me full circle back to the OP:

Utd trying to sign Dyabala... A player who got 5G 5A in 30 Serie A appearances last season (24 starts)

I'm sorry but for such an old member here, you've made terrible points here. Kinda shows that Prem is the only thing you care to follow.

Dybala is a fantastic player and the main reason he didn't do well last season was due to the change in the system thanks to CR7.

Previously, he was playing as a CAM behind the striker in a 3-5-1-1 or in a 4-3-2-1 alongside Costa. Now that Ronaldo joined, the system had to change for him to a 4-4-2 and sometimes a 4-3-3 meaning that Dybala had to play more in the center of the park as Benardeschi and Matuidi vere playing out wide most games and were actually linking up very well with Ronaldo. Dybala also got injured twice during the season and wasn't started by the manager (Hence only 23 starts last season) due to cautionary reasons.

So in addition to having terrible output last season, he's also not adaptable, failed to be resilient AND injury prone?

I'm starting to warm to the idea of an agressive stragety - rotating the big hitters to hunt for early captaincy hauls.

    GW1-2
    Fraser, Salah, Auba
    GW 3-4
    Perez, Sterling, Kane

This obviously includes a -4, but gives you a captaincy rotation of: NOR (H), BUR (H), NEW (H), BRI (H)
It also gives you very good attacking fixtures for you non-captains.

After these first 4 GWs you might want to assess form/fixtures and perhaps consider a WC.

    Thoughts?

    1. Zladan
      • 6 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

You might get priced out of that strategy. Salah could easily rise if he hits the ground running due to how good his opening 8 fixtures are and those who were trying to be clever avoiding him from GW1 will be getting on the wagon before it’s too late.

Abraham took them for Villa last year and was pretty consistent with them.
      Luiz would be amazing!

Current draft (haven't touched it for 3 whole days!)

    Ryan(button)
    Taa, robbo, zinch, digne
    Salah, sterling, Perez, Fraser
    King, Jota

    Dendoncker, Lund, greenwood

Very template I feel , any glaring concerns apart from zinchenko nailedness?

I can’t figure out how but our teams are very similar yet I have KDB with Salah and Sterling. I can’t figure out where your money is.

Ah I see it now. You’ve maybe got a nicer spread of funds, but I’ve maybe got the nicer price points.

I’m only 2 transfers away from bringing in Kane at the expense of KDB/Sterling.

You: Perez Fraser Robbo Deu Me: KDB Zaha VVD Adams

Sorry for the late response, thanks for your comments, yeh I've had some of those in my team at points, Fraser looks great for the first two imo.

My team is very similar in defense and midfield. I have opted for Calvert-Lewin and Deulofeu up front, instead of Jota and Greenwood.
