Sterling back on the score sheet as Aguero frustrates in cameo

Manchester City 3-0 Aston Villa

Goals: Raheem Sterling (£12.1m), David Silva (£7.7m), Ilkay Gündogan (£5.2m)

Assists: Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m), Kevin de Bruyne (£10.1m)

Bonus Points: Sterling x3, Ederson x2 (£6.1m), Silva x1, Gundogan x 1

Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa was a match that both elated and devastated managers in ownership of popular Manchester City assets.

Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) finally got back in the goals to reward those who had both kept the faith and handed him the captain’s armband for Gameweek 10.

Kevin de Bruyne (£10.1m) owners were less fortunate. They witnessed the Belgian awarded Manchester City’s second goal of the afternoon, only to see the Premier League Goal Accreditation panel alter the decision after the full-time whistle.

De Bruyne was initially awarded City’s second goal – before it was given to David Silva

There had been a strong suggestion that David Silva (£7.7m) had touched the ball on its way into the net, which the aforementioned panel confirmed by awarding the Spaniard the goal, downgrading de Bruyne’s points to those of an assist.

There was also a knock-on effect for Benjamin Mendy (£5.9m) who had originally been given the assist when the goal was considered de Bruyne’s. The overturned decision removed five points from the Frenchman’s score, three for the assist and a further two bonus.

While Sterling and De Bruyne’s attacking returns will still be (relatively) pleasing to managers who had backed the duo to deliver, there can be no looking past Guardiola’s decision to not only bench Sergio Aguero (£12.2m), but to give the Argentinian a 15-minute cameo for a one-point return.

This was the first time since last December that Guardiola opted to start Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) for a second successive league game, and the Brazilian duly delivered to justify his manager’s decision. Just as the second half was getting underway, Jesus flicked a header onto Sterling to claim an assist for the Englishman’s goal.

Aguero watched most of this match from the bench and came on for a one-point cameo

Given Aguero’s benching and his manager’s notorious reputation for rotating his star men, there can be now no guarantees as to whether the premium forward will start matches on a regular basis. Previously, it had been thought he was safe for home matches – that is clearly no longer the case.

However, the true nature of the dilemma for his owners is that the next side to come to the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League are Southampton, who were so bad defensively against Leicester that they conceded nine goals. Aguero owners may find it hard to sell him ahead of such an appealing fixture.

Whilst the game was naturally dominated by both the presence and absence of Manchester City’s attacking assets, a second consecutive clean-sheet will be pleasing for those managers invested in their defence. In Gameweek 10, City looked assured at the back to weather a number of promising Villa attacks.

Mendy has returned to the Fantasy radar and seemingly improved Sterling’s prospects too

The emergence of Mendy and right-back Joao Cancelo (£5.3m) in the full-back positions could allow greater confidence of starts for Fantasy managers compared to those at centre-back.

It must also be said that Mendy’s return to the team is likely a key reason why we’ve seen Sterling score four goals in his last two matches. The Englishman was forced to stay out wide while Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.3m) was holding down the fort on the left, but he has come back into the middle now that Mendy is back. Zinchenko’s long-term injury should ensure he’s in the team for a prolonged spell if he can stay fit.

As mentioned, it’s harder to invest in the middle of Manchester City’s defensive unit right now.

Fernandinho was sent off against Aston Villa

Fernandinho (£5.2m) and Rodri (£5.5m) had formed a promising centre-back partnership against Palace, but an injury for the latter saw John Stones (£5.3m) return to the side for this one.

Furthermore, there was something of a blot on Fernandinho’s copybook in Gameweek 10 as he was sent off in the 87th minute for a second bookable offence.

The Brazilian will not miss Gameweek 10 though as his one-match suspension can be spent on the upcoming midweek EFL Cup tie against Southampton – leaving him available to face the Saints in the Premier League.

However, it will still be interesting to see either of the fit and recognised centre-backs in Nicolas Otamendi (£5.5m), who was on the bench against Villa, and Stones, who impressed against Villa, work their way into Guardiola’s plans.

With Sterling and D Silva both getting their names on the scoresheet, it was Ilkay Gundogan (£5.2m) who capped off an impressive team display with a well-taken goal to add gloss to the scoreline on an afternoon where City were not at their best.

Against a newly-promoted side who are visiting the Etihad, the Citizens will have scope to not be playing at the imperious standards they have set for themselves, but sterner tests are likely to arise  – with Guardiola’s side having shown their vulnerability at home in the defeat to Wolves in Gameweek 8.

Grealish (right) did ask some questions of the Manchester City defence but left the Etihad Stadium on crutches

For Dean Smith and Villa, the first-half display was a template performance as to how to frustrate City at home whilst also creating a number of genuine chances.

Jack Grealish (£5.9m) and Wesley Moraes (£6.1m) pressed Guardiola’s defensive unit, although the Brazilian striker did look isolated at times given the fact that the majority of Villa’s chances came on the counter-attack.

Villa’s captain Grealish ended up leaving the City ground on crutches having been substituted in the 84th minute, and the extent of the injury will have to be assessed ahead of the West Midlands side’s game against Liverpool next weekend.

An impressive performance from John McGinn (£5.9m) was nearly capped with a consolation goal late in the game, though the Scotsman struck the post as City held on to close the gap to three points with league leaders Liverpool ahead of their clash against Tottenham on Sunday.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Mendy (Angeliño 73′), Fernandinho, Stones, Cancelo; Gundogan, D Silva, De Bruyne (Foden 76′); Sterling (Aguero 76′), Jesus, B Silva.

Aston Villa XI (4-3-3): Heaton; Targett, Engels, Mings, Guilbert; Nakamba, Douglas Luiz, McGinn; Grealish, Trezeguet, Wesley (Davis 71′).

    Pope (Button)
    TAA, Robbo, Mendy (Lundstram, Rico)
    Salah, KDB, Maddison, Martial, Mount
    Vardy, Tammy (Connolly)

Worth a 4 point hit for [Wilson, Cantwell, Ota] > [Connolly, Martial, Mendy] to get the above?

Have 2FT’s - and Wilson & Ota have irritated me for long enough now

Yeah no Raz for a while now - and i must admit it was a worry going into today p, and was t comfortable to watch... but he didn’t really punish non owners (again)

Behind the sofa again for Southampton this weekend though, especially free his expected rest midweek

His upcoming schedule doesn’t scream 4 & 5 goal wins to me though:

ata(CL), liv, CHE, SHA(CL), new, bur, MAN, zag(CL), ars, CC(QF), LEI, wol

Interestingly (despite the concerns over Maddison which anyone would have if they watched on Friday night) one of the form streams below is Maddison, and the other is Sterling...

        6-8-3-2-0-7-2-5-11
        5-6-2-1-10-0-7-2-8

Kind of hard to guess which is which at first glance!

Given their ownerships it hurt Vardy owners just as much not owning Sterling! City are a different beast. They can easily score 4-5 goals against any team in the competition.

I’m not sure that’s a blanket rule - but ultimately a 12.0 player on Sterling’s run of form has killed his owners for weeks upon weeks now (as have many of the premiums in fact)

It could turn around for him vs. Southampton for sure though - that will NOT be a comfortable watch by any stretch

              It is based on effective ownerships. Vardy: 20 x 36% = 7.2 points against the average. Sterling: 11 x 64% = 7.05.

Sterling showed what he is capable of in the champions league and that translated into his MOTM performance against Villa. Would be nervous not owning him beyond Southampton

His capability hasn’t ever really been in question, he’s pretty much been a 30+ return a season man for a while now

My issue with him (partially with his manager) is with a player of Sterling’s price you need to be spiking captaincy to properly extract value from him... and he just hasn’t been consistent on that front his year which has killed large portions of his owners for weeks/months now

Southampton is the fly in the ointment though - nail a captaincy on a treble return (or more) there & all is rosy in the garden again... but vice versa if he somehow doesn’t haul

As I say, I personally don’t look at the below fixture lookahead and see city dishing out the regular 4 & 5 goal wallopings that would help get him those double & treble returns that the captaincy could translate into proper progress...

ata(CL), liv, CHE, SHA(CL), new, bur, MAN, zag(CL), ars, CC(QF), LEI, wol

But the guy is class though, you’ll rarely find anyone (owner or not) who’ll argue otherwise

i think it is more to do with spreading the cash over the likes of TAA, Robbo, Mendy

Since Bilva's hattrick he has produced 4 blanks in a row

Not going to say same is going to happen to both of Perez and Pulisic. But kneejerkers must be aware that scoring a hattrick doesnt necessarily make them a good option (unless its Vardy).

Bboth are prone to rotation as well

xG fan ? Vardy is a complete stat buster. He has 19 goals in 21 under Rodgers. (more than any other pl player during that period)

He's nailed on with great fixtures on Pens and doesnt play in europe so will be fresh. He's the best forward to own over next 8 fixtures imo.

One element of FPL is not over complicating. Simple as that

Best forward yes but you’re forgetting he is 9.0+ and cripples the rest of your squad. Sacrifices have to be made to own Vardy; TAA, City defence, Salah, Sterling, KDB, Mount, Leicester mid.

Since when does it hace to break to team to have a 9m fwd. 2 clean sheets are a guarantee to no one and finally pool concede, salah has blanks , sterl barring this gw , has blanked, city have conceded and leicester mid doesnt have a bang on goalscorer yet.
You are simply trying to comfort yourself purely because you cannot deal with beung unable to put vardy in your team and have to deal with a failing pukki and an injured wickham.
Defensively there is no template guaranteed to haul every week this season, midfielders are just as hot and cold so putting down vardy whom has actually been performing in recent gws , simply because you feel your template idea beats all others fullstop is can be called confidently stupid

You have zero case other than the empty one next to you wiv all the bottled scattered around it.

What are yours thoughts on all the Leicester midfielders?

Maddison - the most expensive, seems to be playing a deeper role CM role recently, but should continue to tick over with set pieces.

Tielemans - more advanced than Maddison, but low xG and xA stats.

Perez - seems to be playing as a second striker with Vardy in this new formation. Very cheap and possibly will continue to start after his hat-trick?

Barnes - good chemistry with Chilwell, looks like he's got alot of creative freedom on the left wing so high assist potential but less goal threat. Looks a good option for his price but is he nailed?

I think they have a well balanced attacking team and they will rotate the points

      Vardy is the must have

Others a lottery but just personally I'd probably go..

      Tiel, Barnes, Perez, Madd.

        Why Barnes over Perez?

Probably get more price rises out of Perez compared to Barnes at least...

Sold perez when he was awful at the start. Not missing him at all but he's playing well now under B R

Just like Barnes and think I'd rather own him of the two and find him fun to watch. I'm not much a stats guy so can't comment there. Perez won't score hat tricks every week.

Tielemans best value for me and more nailed on to play every game. But much prefer to go without as have Vardy, if I was to double up I'd go for one of the wingbacks

In the cold light of day I think Perez is the biggest pricing mistake out of them all (probably some recent bias creeping in there understandably after that monster haul)

But if he had been priced up after his big money summer move, rather than before, you’d imagine he’d have been either a 7.0 mid or a 6.5 striker... at 6.0 and as a mid you can’t really go wrong

All good options though - probably a case of pick & stick rather than get sucked into a points chasing Hokey Cokey between the 4 of them

agree with this and that's why many of us started with him...in his interview post match he stated how it has taken him time to adapt to the tactics and his new wider position...if he kicks on he'll prove one of the best value assets in the game for sure, he's a wait and see for me though atm.

Cheers. Seems like most people prefer Barnes to Perez, but I am drawn to the explosivity of Perez. Can't afford Tielemans and the plan is to actually trade Maddison down to Perez to afford Wilson to Vardy.

What’s with the TAA bias on here? The man is 7.2m and has produced a single double digit haul. Why is he considered “essential” or a “season keeper”? His current form is 2.8?

    1. Stupendous
      • 11 Years
      4 years, 6 months ago

Don't think it's a bias as per se.

He is likely the top scoring defender at the end of the season and is probably about to haul very shortly if not today.

He's a season keeper but I see your point.

He's basically a 7.2m midfielder swinging in endless quality balls in a title-chasing team... and he also gets you 4 points for a clean sheet. Add to that the fact there are loads of dirt cheap quality defenders available this season and he's a no brainer.

Alison back will help a lot. Of all the top scoring defenders he and Robbo are the two predicted to be top scorers at the end of the seasons.

It’s hard to quantify the value of a known quantity in this game. He is the best set and forget player out there.

Connolly blanked in 45 min last week and thought they might have kept a clean sheet.

He's only 18 and is pretty much the ideal impact sub. Pulisic took a while to get going, but after his last couple of games his place is pretty much his to lose you'd think. Willian is nailed on the other flank - Lampard loves him and recently called him their best player. Mount and Tammy aren't going anywhere. Plus now CHO has signed his long term contract there's less pressure to start him just to keep him happy too. I reckon he'll get a few starts here and there, but not enough to warrant keeping him in fpl for me. There'll be more frustrating sub appearances like today. Was good while he lasted.

For anyone considering going without Sterling:

As a team, City have an xG of 30! Phenomenal. To put that into perspective Chelsea are at 18, Liverpool 17 and Leicester 13.5. Just incredible attacking numbers and the volume of chances they create is head and shoulders above the pack

I can’t imagine going without Sterling. He was unlucky not to register at least 2 assists yesterday and was the stand out MOTM, this following on from his hat-trick heroics in the champions league. I think he will end up as highest point scorer this season, just ahead of Salah

Stress between Vardy & Auba, and finally Chose Auba before gw 9 just because already have maddy & soy ( i think tripple lei is to much). Regret with my decision, thinking about Auba to Vardy before gw 10.

I never like tripling up on a team unless it's City or Liverpool, seems like too big of a punt. And I still expect Auba to score consistently.

I have triple Lei because of their fixture run, but I know what you mean as I left Soy on the bench because tripling up and them potentially having a bad game (especially on a Friday night) seemed too much of a risk. I like Auba's price point because you can go to Aguero and even Kane easily enough if you need to, but Vardy is pretty needed right now (even ignoring his hattrick).

Why would you switch to Aguero?

Avoiding triple ups/double ups without any genuine reason is not really a good idea. Have to compare players on individual basis, if it results in triple ups, so be it.

How do I solve a problem like CHO? There's no one obvious at his price to replace him, so should I just hold? If I want Mount I'll have a lot of money shifting to do.

Hold I guess - I think he will get his minutes and attacking points

I'm thinking of alighting the Chelsea train a little earlier than the masses as the fixtures start turning.

Have triple Chelsea assets at the moment. (Tomori, Mount, Tammy)

    Anyone thinking the same?

Chelsea are still scoring a lot of goals, I wouldn't be too worried for any of their games except for Man City away. Even then, I see them scoring at least one.

        They are, yes.

Just have a hunch they will be drying up soon, and would like to get rid of Tomori too

Selling Tomori might be a good idea. But who do you replace him with? Call me crazy but I think double SHU could be a good idea.

if I'm getting rid of Tomori, it would only be for another Pool/City asset.
so Mendy would be the #1 choice.

I’m even wanting to bring tomori in, great price point. Don’t think they’ll dry up either.

Yep I agree their price points bring about value.

But the minutes they have each game are kinda worrying to me.

As for Tomori, not enough cleansheets imo and no attacking threat either. Arguably Lunds and Rico are better than him at the same price bracket.

Agree they don’t keep enough clean sheets, just with their fixtures i reckon a few are there to be had, debating doing a simple Hanley to Rico upgrade, or even Willems or Lascelles as Newcastle are quite cheap and solid at the back.

Dilva is only 4 points off Sterling for 4.5 million less...remarkable really considering Sterling's form in general this season!

      didn't notice that.

Could be a really good option to go with Salah/Raz/KDB/Silva/Mount mid

looks great value but always a bit of a concern that his minutes will become more and more reduced as the season goes on...still looks world class at the top of his game though (apart from that shocking miss yesterday)!

I have 2 free transfers, an injured Boly and no Leicester players. Time to use the wildcard or just do a or b - or other suggestions?

    a. Cantwell + Pukki/Wilson -> Tielemans + Connolly
    b. Pukki + Wilson -> Vardy + Connolly

    Heaton
    TAA, Lundstram, Rico
    Salah, Sterling, KDB, Hudson-Odoi
    Pukki, Wilson, Abraham

    McGovern, Cantwell, Boly, Tomori
