Christian Pulisic (£6.9m) is our focus as we continue to assess the fit-again players who could make an impact in Fantasy Premier League upon its restart this month.

The American has been sidelined since New Year’s Day but was on the cusp of a return shortly before top-flight football was called to a halt in March.

It’s been a disjointed debut Premier League season for the former Borussia Dortmund winger, who initially failed to establish himself in the Chelsea starting XI before being handed eight successive starts in late autumn.

Pulisic now returns to bolster Frank Lampard’s options across the frontline, with the Blues pushing for a top-four spot.

Costing less than £7.0m and owned by just 3.4% of FPL managers (many of those will be inactive teams, too), the USA international is, at the very least, an attractively priced differential – although one who comes with caveats.

We delve into the numbers in the Members Area to further assess his credentials in the article below.

WHAT IS PULISIC’S FITNESS LATEST?

Pulisic benched as Lampard switches to a 3-4-3 against unchanged Spurs

Pulisic was last seen in Gameweek 21, when he lasted 65 minutes of Chelsea’s 1-1 draw at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Missing the FA Cup third-round tie against Nottingham Forest with an issue with his adductor, the American was subsequently ruled out for several weeks with what his manager described as a “nasty injury”.

An early comeback in February was aborted as the problem proved to be more complicated than initially thought and it wasn’t until the beginning of March that Pulisic was ready to feature in a behind-closed-doors friendly.

Speaking ahead of Gameweek 29, just before COVID-19 stopped play, Lampard said:

We just had an in-house game here which Ruben [Loftus-Cheek] and Christian Pulisic took part in.

It’s great to see Christian get some minutes. He’s short of match fitness but it’s the first time the injury has felt at a level to get him on a big pitch in a relatively competitive match. That’s a big step forward, hopefully.

The unforeseen three-month hiatus has given Pulisic even more time to fully recharge, with the player himself saying of his injury in May:

I didn’t take it as seriously as I think I should have. It was one of those you felt you could do a lot of things but you try to push it that one extra step and realise it’s not ready yet.

It was very tough and frustrating going through times like that. I underestimated it and tried to get back as soon as I could because I just wanted to play so bad.

If anything, I’ve given myself a little more time to rest now and make sure that I’m 100 per cent fit. I’d say I’m fully recovered and ready to go as soon as we get back.

The winger has since been sighted in full training at Cobham, as preparations ramp up for the Blues’ fixture against Aston Villa.

WHOSE PLACE WILL HE TAKE?

Fernandes, Salah, De Brunye, Mount, Fleck
    Calvert-Lewin, Jiminez, Aubameyang

Re. the article, with the 5 sub gig, I can see Chelsea's young midfielders being jiggled about a heck of a lot. Your CHOs, RLCs, Mounts, Pullies, Bark et al may see a lot of 1 and 2 pointers.

I expect a lot of 1 pointers from non premium players over the next 6 GWs. And a lot of crying. It's going to be great!

One dilemma is, I expect more defensive errors and fewer clean sheets; on the other hand centre backs are more likely to play over 60 mins, and premium mids/strikers are more likely to be rested and rotated. There's gonna be MONSTEr hauls of 1 and 2 pointers. Ha ha ha!

I’m betting on Chelsea playing well again after a long rest. They looked tired at one point and struggled with their system. Tammy should get more opportunities if the team is fresh. If not then a switch to Rashford makes sense.

Pep, Jose and Klopp are very clever. I expect they will have figured out creative ways to prepare the team plus they have more resources than the small clubs.

    1. Andy_Social
      • 13 Years

That can apply to a host of teams. But Chelsea will want to be hanging onto 4th spot. United and Spuds will want to crash it. Blades and Wolves will fancy their chances too. The "small clubs" at the bottom will fight tooth and nail to avoid relegation. For me, I'm avoiding the beach-party sides, the likes of Burnley ('scept for Pope as back-up), Palace, Everton, Saints, Toon.

Chelsea started well this season so I'm hoping they can repeat those performances with fresh players.
The small clubs have been the worst in the German league. IMO Before you can fight tooth and nail you need to be adequately prepared for the season.

Just did a fh draft with fun the only motive. Any suggestions on it more than welcome!
    Hederson (or Reina)
O connel, Mings, Targett (or Stevens)
    Sterling, KDB, Pepe, Ozil, Grealish
    Aguero, Auba

Pepe, Ozil - Neither anywhere near my free hit team (Grealish better option than both)

      Free Hit givens
Aguero, Aubamayang, KDB, Grealish/McGinn, at least 2 sheff utd at the back

Single Gameweek players I'd want to keep
      TAA
      Salah
      Fernandes

I'm thinking Ederson for my triple up on City, might even go triple Sheff utd and lob in a Mousset.

Not touching Villa's back line, if I did it would be Target

So you are suggesting not to go full dgw crazy and keep a few sgw players... that was my initial (sensible) approach with taa and Fernandes in and possibly salah. But it seems this is the only dgw available (which sucks as i can't play bb) so why not to go a bit crazy and have fun with it? But yes ozil and pepe can easily change which can lead to no villa defence too.

A lot of people seem to think the new 5 sub rule means there will be a lot of pre 60 minute subs but I don't see why. Managers can still only make subs 3 times so won't want to be using them up early. I don't expect a lot of difference, other than a few more double substitutions after 60 mins. Teams with a lot to play for will still want their best team on the pitch as long as they are fit, although subs might get used more towards the end of the game, to give more players a rest when the result is a foregone conclusion

      I'm not so sure.
I'm reading a lot of content that Bundesliga have seen a significant increase in half time substitutions.

Are their rules the same ?

Depends on how things are going I guess. For example Leverkusen made 3 changes at 46 mins because they were getting thrashed, Bayern didn't make any before 62 mins. I won't have anyone in my team likely to be on the end of a drubbing.

What I can see happening is poorly-coordinated defences getting stretched and breaking late on in games when fitness counts. The premium mids and strikers who would fill their boots have been hauled off, leaving your Nketiah's to clean up.

Only 6 teams made a sub before 60 mins this weekend and as some were very early I guess it was because of injury rather than the new rules.

Villa 4 games in 10 days. Burnley 3 games in 7 days. That's just two teams fro example.

I think Chelsea are capable of putting four of five in against Villa, I might just go with two Chelsea, Alonso and a MF, might take a punt on Pulisic, was thinking of Willian until I read he's out of contract and hasn't even signed a short extension.

    B) Guaita - LEI (A), BOU (H), NEW (A), SHU (H), NOR (A), ARS (H), MCI (A)

    Bench who:
    1) Ayew - LEI (A)
    2) Targett - NEW (A)

I'm been looking at the same two Pope replacements and am thinking A, Sheff Utd have the forth best D in the game and like me you have no coverage for their good run of fixtures.

I suppose it makes sense to have 12 DGW players on a FH.........would you rather:

    A) Triple up on SHU defence (Lundy + O'Connell + Egan)
    B) Double up on Villa (Reina + Targett)

No. See the post above but if the best option involves bringing Lundstram in, who wasn't starting, doesn't seem worth having all your eggs in one basket.

(Obviously team selections may be completely left-field when it first starts back up, but I'd be more tempted to spread the risk and limit it to two)

I have two options I'm considering currently:

        1) Henderson, Bellerin, Doherty, Fleck, Stevens.
        2) Leno, Baldock, Egan, Ozil, Stevens.

Doherty vs Sheffield triple up basically. Leaning towards 1 as i'm top of my mini league and don't need to be too aggressive. Would prefer Ozil over Fleck though.

Pretty sure I'm not going to FH. Best use of 2 FTs here?

      Leno
      TAA, Lundstram, Egan
      Salah, KDB, Fernandes, Grealish
      Aubameyang, Jimenez, DCL

      Pope; Maguire, Hayden, Hanley.

      0.0 ITB

I'm thinking maybe DCL and Pope to Nketiah and Ederson and play BB.

                Oh sorry read wrong!

In thase case, DCL & Salah to Mahrez & Jesus. Shame u can't get Aguero. I think City treble is essential.

I would recomend FHing though. Sheff Utd, Villa and City all have bad fixtures after double, meaning treble ups will suffer. Plus I can't see a better opportunity

I might WC the week after so not really concerned with having those players in my team.

I like the Jesus pick. Will consider but still think Salah could be one of the highest scoring players this GW.

      For a FH

Would you prefer A or B

      (a) (VVD & Baldock) plus (Aubameyang)
      (b) (TAA) plus (HBarnes & Vardy)

For me it's close - can see goals at Watford for Leicester, even with recent improvement. Any thoughts?

Also, they sometimes play 352 against low block sides (e.g Burnley). They used this strategy against Villa, won 6-1 with Jesus and Aguero getting 30 points between them.

      3. 1 for the price of 2 - not for me, but if chasing and want to do something different, why not.

Anybody else feeling a distinct lack of excitement about the re-start from a fantasy perspective?

We've been robbed of the most exciting part of the season - the BGW's & several DGW's to follow. This is traditionally the part of the season where I can accelerate up the rankings and record some monster scores (I got 137 in one DGW a few seasons ago using BB with 15 DGWers).

Most of my ML rivals have used up their chips, and some did very well out of TC chip. I was patiently waiting for the moment to unleash mine. That moment will never come now!

(Not blaming anyone by the way, just having a little moan whilst I'm on my lunch break)

Think most people who said they didn't care about it coming back have also kind of u-turned on that given how long it's been away.
