International Football

How many minutes did FPL assets play over the international break?

The final international break of 2020 has come to an end, with a number of Premier League clubs counting the cost of their players’ involvement with their respective countries.

Even by usual standards, we’ve seen a higher-than-average number of Fantasy Premier League flags appearing over the last fortnight thanks to a combination of injury and illness.

Our Team News tab and our press conference round-up (in both article and video form) will cover everything on the fitness front but it is fatigue we’re focusing more on in this article as we look at how many minutes each FPL asset clocked up while on international duty.

Some nations crammed in a triple-header of games over the last fortnight, with a handful of top-flight players taking part in all three of their respective country’s matches.

As well as on-field exertions, long-haul flights back from further afield may also be a consideration ahead of Gameweek 9.

FURTHEST TRAVELLED AND LATEST RETURNEES

Many of the matches that took place over the international break, including the friendlies involving the USA, Mexico and South Korea, were staged in Europe.

There were a number of World Cup qualifiers held in South America, however, so the likes of James Rodriguez (£7.9m), Richarlison (£7.8m), Roberto Firmino (£9.2m) and Alex Telles (£5.5m) have had to endure long-haul flights back from their respective countries after being in action late on Tuesday or in the early hours of Wednesday morning (UK time).

Thiago Silva (£5.5m), indeed, looks set to miss Gameweek 9 as a result of his late return.

The South American countries weren’t the last ones in action, however, with a host of European teams – including England, Scotland, the Republic of Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands – contesting UEFA Nations League games as late as Wednesday evening.

Players such as Sadio Mane (£12.1m), Hakim Ziyech (£8.2m) and Riyad Mahrez (£8.2m) have all been in African Cup of Nations qualifying duty in their home continent, meanwhile, although all those games were wrapped up by Tuesday afternoon at the latest.

The dates for all of the international games in November are available here.

CLUB-BY-CLUB ROUND-UP

The team-by-team guide below breaks down the minutes that each player has played per international match over the last week or so, with a total given at the end.

Any players with an asterisk next to their names withdrew from their countries’ squads either midway through the international break or picked up an injury at the back-end of it.

As mentioned earlier, we’ll have further details on any lingering fitness concerns in our pre-Gameweek 9 team news round-up on Friday.

                Rashford better home form than Bruno last season and the Southampton game next GW I think suits Rashford as a pacy left sided player to exploit the space in behind KWP and the Saints high line that other similar players have done well with (Werner, Son, Zaha)

                  Makes sense! While I don't think being a home fixture will make that much of a difference, I totally agree Soton's high defensive line can sure do !

        Steve Bruce starts with an injury update:

        "Ryan Fraser won't make it for Saturday but Callum Wilson has a chance. If there's any risk whatsoever then he won't play but he has trained the last few days and was very comfortable yesterday. He wants to play."

        Wilson owners keeping or selling?

        Bissouma 2 pointer for me if Wilson doesn't play or sell for a hit?

          Hits are flying this week, so there are two ways of looking at it - either everyone else is doing it so why not, or don't do any and start the week with a headstart.

          Seems as sensible as anything can be for a -8.

          How to take a decision?

          Mccarthy - Steer
          Chilwell - kilman - justin - feurgeson - Lewis
          Salah - Son - Grealish - Soucek - Anguissa(4.5 fodder)
          DCL - Kane - Werner

          - I already took a hit this week
          - Salah and Son drops already affected me if I’m going to sell them

          Options:
          1) To WC:
          Main Players to bring:
          An Aston Villa defender/GK
          Vardy
          Bruno
          Zaha
          Ziyech
          KDB (maybe)

          2) Leave it as it is and Don’t WC:
          - I lost 4 points on the hit earlier
          - I’ll play with 4 defenders this week which is not ideal (chilwell, kilman, lewis, Justin) and Kane+Son Vs city
          - I’ll miss possible returns from Bruno mainly and Zaha

          3) WC next week:
          - I would have missed the most important game of the bruno run and lost the 4 points of this weeks’ hit
          - But I get to watch leicester, spurs, crystal palace, man city and utd one more game before bringing their assets/selling them

          4) Salah —> Bruno this week (for a 2nd hit) , Kane —> Vardy next week… save WC for later

              Worth a punt - I know I've done a -4 for Fernandes so 'should' captain him but I'll take him scoring 5 as I'd still be up on the deal! Classic short-termism, I'll never learn.

              For now probably yes, but I dont care about double up, only who get more points 🙂 Bruno good short term I think until City goes on their wild run (who I think is coming shortly) Might then downgrade Kane to afford it, but yeah, Bruno I think it is.

            1. Complete toss up. Possibly Watkins with fixtures but Bamford has better numbers.
            2. Again a toss up. With 5 playing defenders I'd choose James as he seems a bonus magnet when he does play, and more likely to return attacking wise than Zouma.

                I'd say James will return two assists for every one goal by Zouma, so my tie breaker would be BPS, and I think James edges it, despite the risk on benchings.

          I feel like my GW9 is riding entirely on Southampton v Wolves being 0-0. Don't think there is much I can do to spread out the risk/reward choices, play Mitchell maybe?

          McCarthy (Ryan)
          Chilwell, Kilman, KWP (Mitchell Justin)
          Hames, Bruno(c), Zaha, Soucek (Salah)
          Kane, DCL, Watkins

          Thoughts on the double Southampton? Or take Ryan despite owning Watkins?

          Spurs will park the bus and try to hit on the counter against City (and possibly Ars). It should favor Son, especially if Walker is caught to far forward, imo.

          Kane collects at midfield and puts Son through...

          Tactical thoughts on this?

            City's high line should favour the speed of Son and if Bale/Moura plays then they should benefit too.

            Sounds reasonable, I actually think Spurs will win. I have started to transition my team this week which means dropping Spurs for City/United assets. Lost Son this week for Bruno, and next week Kane for KDB. So long as those individual choices pay off that GW I'll be more than happy.... not quite convinced they will though.

          On WC(maybe), are these moves enough to warrant it?

          Nyland to Martinez
          Coady to Zouma
          Bavies to Targett
          Sterling to Ziyech
          Podence to Grealish
          Salah to Mane

          Leaving me with

          McCarthy/Martinez
          Zouma Cresswell Lamptey Dallas Targett
          Mane Son Ziyech Grealish Bissouma
          Kane DCL Adams

          If I could find .2 in there somewhere I'd upgrade Zouma to Chilwell.

            I wouldn't be keeping Kane and Son on wildcard. Keeping one is fine if you feel they will keep going. One of J. Rod/Bruno and Vardy/Werner would be what I'm looking at although Bruno would be a down grade elsewhere too.

            Chilwell definitely worth the money as well.

              Want to give it at least this week with Son and Kane in place to see how they do v City. If either or both do well there will be a clamour to get them back in from a lot of people. Not too fussed about Bruno just yet.

          Buttomed.

          Which of these WC teams do you prefer? I am currently on A.

          A)
          McCarthy - 4m
          Justin - Targett - James - Dias - Coufal
          KdB - Bruno - Zaha* - Grealish - Bissouma
          DCL* - Kane - Bamford
          + 1,7 ITB (an easier way to Bruno -> Salah when fit again)

          B)
          McCarthy - 4m
          Justin - Targett - James - Dias - Coufal
          KdB - Bruno - Jota* - Grealish - Bissouma
          Vardy* - Kane - Bamford
          + 0,2 ITB (would probably do Vardy + Bruno out to get Salah back in after two GW's)

            Probably just A because it's only one move to get Salah back

          Lads, seek your advice please.

          Which is a better move here for my team?
          Martinez, Steer
          Robertson, Chilwell, James, Lamptey, Mitchell
          Salah*, Son, Grealish, Podence, Burke
          Kane, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Bamford

          1FT, 2.9m.

          Apologies, I have too many choices!
          A) Podence -> Ziyech
          B) Salah -> Bruno Fernandes
          C) Salah -> KDB
          D) Son -> Bruno Fernandes
          E) Son -> KDB
          F) Salah & Son -> Bruno Fernandes & KDB -4
          G) A&B or A&C -4
          H) Save FT
          I) Other move(s)

          I don’t see much love for Ziyech on here? He looks incredible as a FPL asset

            Debating taking a hit for him tbh, I was going to last gameweek but thought 'nah', ended up costing me extra points. Reckon its the start of consistent hauls.

          Is there anyone, realistically, folk would consider taking a hit for to get out Son? i.e. Jrod, Ziyech, Grealish (Single gameweek vs Long term too).

          Its a broad question so, for example, to get in De Bruyne or get in Vardy up top (with another transfer elsewhere)

            No, I'd be keeping Son this week and do the planned move next week. Some will disagree.
