How I will learn from last season’s recovery to rise up the FPL overall rankings

Az discusses last season’s rise from a seven-figure rank to just outside the top 10k as he bids to arrest a slow start in 2020/21.

Sitting at an overall rank of 1,817,850 at the time of writing, it’s fair to say that this season hasn’t gone exactly as planned.

Looking at my Gameweek history from the 2019/20 campaign, it’s quite surprising just how similar my starts in this season and last have been.

After Gameweek 11 last year, I was ranked around two million in the world, with a team value about the same as it is for me now (£102.3m).

I remember feeling exactly as I do now, ooking around at other peoples’ teams and wondering how I am going to catch up.

But I did. After Gameweek 11, I hit green arrows in 11 out of the subsequent 12 Gameweeks. My rank was around the 100,000 mark by Gameweek 24, and I ended up finishing just outside of the top 10k (17,456) after a bit of a fail with a final-day Free Hit.

In true BlackBox style, I’m going to think of how to drag myself out of the mire. By reflecting on last season and what worked, I’ll hopefully be able to pinpoint what it was that worked for me.

As a bit of extra research, I’ve even gone back and watched some of the old Scoutcast videos from last season. It’s nice to see my mood generally lift as the Gameweeks go on and I propel myself up the ranks!

Corrected mistakes

One thing that stands out from watching the videos was that I accepted mistakes I’d made and worked on correcting them, even at the cost of point hits.

I’d bought in Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.7m) in around Gameweek 9 and he wasn’t getting games. So I took a -4 and upgraded him to James Maddison (£7.6m) – if only I’d thought of doing something similar to this week…

Maddison did OK for me, but I noticed that he was playing very deep. So once again, I took a hit to take him out and in came Jack Grealish (£7.8m). This proved to be a bit of a masterstroke, as Jack scored heavily over Christmas. He wasn’t a huge differential at the time, just like he isn’t now, but his steady stream of points was very useful in my rise.

Another error I corrected was the move from Ricardo Pereira (£5.9m) to Çaglar Söyüncü (£5.3m). While this was quite sideways transfer, it freed up some funds and Söyüncü more than matched Pereira over Christmas despite a much kinder price tag. The extra cash helped me upgrade other areas of my squad.

Looking at my team now, I think I’ve made a pretty big error with Riyad Mahrez (£8.3m) – which won’t surprise a lot of you reading this.

When I’m in the market for some consistency and reliable point scorers, Mahrez, quite simply, does not offer this. You never know when he’s going to blank when he’s going to haul – or even when he’ll be subbed off early or on the bench.

My feeling going into the next game is that I can’t sell him before West Brom at home, but he and Neal Maupay (£6.1m) will be leaving my team whatever happens ahead of Gameweek 14. See ya Neal, and thanks for nothing (literally).

How one transfer can change your whole season

I had forgotten how big the impact that moving Tammy Abraham (£7.2m) to Danny Ings (£8.4m) had on my season until I watched the Scoutcast back and saw his return of points in my team over Christmas.

I can’t remember a player having a more pronounced effect on my season than Ings. Put simply, I bought in a player who consistently scored nine pointers every week for £6.0m (at the time).

Until this point, my transfers had been a mixed bag. But, this one transfer changed my entire fortunes.

When the opportunity came knocking in the form of a highly owned player (Abraham) getting injured, getting Ings in was a very savvy move.

Looking at how strong the “template” is now, it will only take one injury to shake things up. This is an opportunity for people like me who invest so much time in the game to make the best decision possible and hopefully find a gem of a player to take me up the ranks.

It’s about being patient, waiting for an opportunity to differentiate ourselves, but not forcing it. Spurs’ fixture swing in Gameweek 16 looks like a good start – and might it be time to drop Grealish at the same time when things start getting quite tough for them?

Steady returns from a captain

Another thing I noted from the Scoutcast videos was just how important it was for me to start sticking the armband on a captain who delivered at least something, week in week out. Jamie Vardy (£10.3m) and Ings were great options last season for this because they found a way to get either a goal or an assist in nearly every fixture they played in over Christmas.

This season, the trio (or even quadruple) of Bruno Fernandes (£11.0m), Mohamed Salah (£12.3m), Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) and Harry Kane (£10.9m) is so strong for exactly this reason. It is, quite simply, hard to imagine any of them blanking in any game they start. This makes them all fantastic captaincy options.

The biggest thing here, and to coin the phrase from fellow Top Gun Luke, is that these players have so many insurances that mean they are so highly likely to get points. The penalty and free-kick factor mean that these guys don’t need to have a good game to score points – just look at Salah this week against Fulham as an example.

Chasing huge hauls from the likes of Mahrez or even (to a lesser extent) Son Heung-min (£9.6m) seems unwise when we have these four players capable of getting a double-digit score in any week. While the aforementioned assets can easily rack up big hauls, they just don’t have as many routes into getting something out of a game as the others, which in my mind, makes them less attractive captaincy picks.

However, on the note of the holy trinity…

Should Liverpool defenders be back on FPL radars and is Jota a trustworthy asset?

One thing that strikes me with the holy trinity/quintessential quartet is that you can’t captain them all every week. In my mind, providing you have a clear plan for who to captain in a given week, owning them all isn’t essential and can mean that you are “priced out” of decent mid-priced players who may hit some form over Christmas.

Ings is a good example, especially as Southampton look red hot at the moment. But also perhaps the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m), Andy Robertson (£7.2m) an an out-of-position Wilfred Zaha (£7.5m) may be impossible to move for if you go too heavy in premium-priced players.

This is a tough one because we do have the likes of Thomas Soucek (£5.0m) offering himself as one of the best “enablers” we’ve ever seen and not a huge amount of mid-priced options currently on the market. This means that I am not completely writing off those that have chosen to fill their team with the most expensive players.

But the landscape may yet change and we even saw a new option emerge in the form of James Maddison (£7.0m), who none of us was considering before.

I think over Christmas we’re going to start seeing some more players start to emerge, as, at the moment, it all feels like everyone’s team is the same without much room to manoeuvre. I’m going to stay relatively “balanced”, not tear my team up to ensure I have four heavy hitters and hope that the shrewd acquisitions of mid-priced players can have the same impact that it did for me last season.

However, I’m not being stubborn. Things can change – maybe they already have – and I need to stay alert and ready to be flexible in case I’m wrong.

Good luck everyone in the Gameweeks ahead. If you’re having a good start to the season, that’s awesome. But if you are struggling like me, I hope this article has at least given you some hope that things can turn around.

      i made that move.
Value isn't worth holding if it isn't properly outperforming another player. The only way it stings is if you want to buy Chilwell back. Also prefer to look at the value as selling price rather than buying price. So the real value tied up in Chilwell is 0.3m.
If James continues to keep pace with Chilwell then his price will increase.
I've made the move to upgrade Mitchell to a playing defender that improves my options for this congested period.

I love BlackBox but I struggle to see how much you can learn from lessons like 'pick a 6 million player who gets loads of points each week' or 'transfer deep lying players for attacking players' or 'dont buy mahrez' They're lessons that are either not reproducible like Ings. A move that in another season with another player could just as easily be a total bust, or kind of obvious lessons like pick a captain that won't blank, get shot of deep lying players and don't buy mahrez if you're not a high stakes gambler.

On balance I feel like there's more lessons we can learn about formations, use of transfers, price points, investment balance across squads, short term v mid/long term player aquisition etc. All these things are things that kind of stand the test of time a bit more while the cast of players changes year in year out. FPL is just like real football, the consistency will come not from people who pick the best player each week but from managers who create well oiled, efficient squads that work as a team

This is an interesting idea, and a niche in FPL podcasts that I think can be filled.

      Playing the actual game.

Picking the players is one thing, but organizing teams by price points, having efficient spend, how to ride the markets, how to prioritize transfers and set your team up to always have good fixtures.

Like I was just thinking that there could be a team that has Salah, KdB, Fernandes, Kane now that would be outscored hugely by another team with the same 4 players for the same duration but they brought players in and out at the wrong time.

i.e. They had Kane GW1, sold to fund Fernandes in GW2 to captain, then bought KdB who blanked etc...

Whereas the 2nd guy could have had Salah GW1, sold for Son/Kane, moved to Bruno ahead of the Everton game etc. Same players, held for the same period of time but the points they've gotten would be 200+ purely from 'timing' it correctly.

      There's something there.

You only have to examine moreorless any kind of system to realise that if you neglect to examine how the parts fit and function as a whole then no amount of buying a flashy new part each week, even a productive new part, is going to save you.

I understand why players are the focus. It's like celbrityism, a constantly changing cast of exciting new names and faces that fuel endless content. It supports an industry, it's cheap, it fits well with the one gameweek cycle, there are things to write about and create tens of thousands of comments about, for ever. But these players, they're the same as they ever were. Nothing much changes, they may as well not have names or faces for all this really matters. They come and they go, but the system is always there, always the same.

The Wire benefits in this sense by having a frequent Meet the Manager type of component. That said, guests vary a lot in their ability to articulate what makes them successful. There is a lot of "fish isn't aware it lives in water" kind of feeling at times.

In some ways it's more informative for one manager to comment on a different manager's strategy, like FPL General did with Magnus Carlsen. It is hard to do this without sounding gossipy but it could be really helpful.

I agree. Strategy discussion and criticism is really helpful, because you can take that on board and consider how it applies to your squad and team. It's a tool that underpins the individual choices you make about players. There are SO MANY things to chat about when you start thinking about it.

In the last few days I've thought about ...

Money on the bench. If you bench an extra 0.5 on a better player, how many times on average are they going to come off the bench. How regularly does an acceptable 5m return v how regularly are top players being rotated, or what are the injury stats for the season.

How to mitigate against injuries or loss of form to premium budgets. How many is too many, which ones give you the most and best escape routes, and does a few 0.1s in the bank (for example if you owned Adams who is cheapest) money better spent than cutting it to the line and hoping he lasts

There are dozens of these little investigations and making the right decisions all adds up to efficiency and fluency

The bench issue would be particularly good for BlackBox because Mark is almost alone among the Pro Pundits in having spent quite a high amount of money on his bench. I think it has helped him a lot. He's never had to rush to sell players because he always has a couple of bench options he could bring in. He's been able to save his wildcard until GW16 without fielding a lot of bad players.

But then arguably he's had to take hits to switch around premium players because he doesn't have quite as much money in his starting XI as others. So I can see the other side of the argument too.

But the lessons aren't "pick a 6 million player who gets loads of points each week" or "transfer deep lying players for attacking players". You're boiling it down too much to make your point.

The lessons for these two points for example could be:

      - Don't forget that £6.0m players can have just as big an impact as premium players. Don't ignore them in your quest for constantly seeking to hokey-cokey in and out the most expensive players.

      - Keep an eye on how players positioning may change over the course of different Gameweeks and react accordingly.

I also think OPs point is massively simplifying things. I've watched a few Blackbox episodes and that's really not the vibe in the slightest.

OP may kind of be ignoring the fact that it is difficult to produce a quality video on the topics they are suggesting, because its really isn't clear-cut that the same sorts or strategy/formation etc are the same year-on-year.

Good managers adapt to changes across seasons. I'm an example of someone whose overall transfer strategy etc has remained relatively the same each year, but struggling more this time around as I haven't adapted (or picked bad players, bad times etc.)

Also, if you're looking for a one-zone fits all video explaining these things then that series is not going to last very long. If you think it is the same across the board each year, then I'd prepare yourself to maybe get one or two videos detailing these points and zilch afterwards.

Blackbox works well in a weekly format as trends/form etc change on a weekly basis. For a few weesk the classic premiums will deliver, but the next weeks they all might tail off and the 6m cheapies play up & deserve a dedicated discussion of their own.

I get the feeling that people sometimes see a post with a few big words

*big and/or analytical-sounding words on a post and go "oh that's a great idea" without really thinking about it or going further than suggesting an initial k barely fleshed-out idea.

Whilst I'm it would be okay to have that sort of detail too, you might be forgetting much of this already exists in the form of Community (and Standard) Articles. Some videos could also be useful, but I don't think a weekly format is the best format for that kind of information.

This isn't in any way intended as a take down of black box. I have thoroughly enjoyed a lot of aspects of it and found it's really added some stuff, thematic stuff around stats in particular that's been deeper and more interesting and better presented than I've seen before. It's just questioning the fact that a lot of the time there's a big imbalance between how much time we spend looking at the parts relative to the system.

To give you an example, this year has seen a glut of low price forwards delivering. We've probably seen more teams relying on two or three up front with all budget options (DCL and below). There has been a mountain of content about which to pick, but can you find me a single podcast or article that focuses on how this changes the structure of teams, what are the implications when this goes right, when it goes wrong, are we increasing or decreasing available options, how to transition to and from and what are the costs etc. You won't find anything extensive examining the system.

Fair points. And I guess it's possible that people can forget that bargain players can end up making us a much bigger edge than premiums, or that we can lose sight of heatmaps or whatever that tell us about positioning.

I guess my point is that these things pretty much always happen. There is usually a bargain player/s and there are usually players who let us down when they're repositioned. We produce endless amounts of content identifying these trends, but almost none at all about how to create teams that can respond efficiently to all these standard phenomena. There's a lot of firefighting that goes on, because it's a one week cycle and people see FPL as short term, because you can't predict what a player will do in any one week. imo it's a short term, mid term and long term game. And apart from chip strategy, we neglect to investigate the rest re mid and long term

It would be good to go back and do some kind of postmortem anytime there winds up being a player that a large part of the community bought who turned out to be a trap, like Jota, Podence, etc. What are the more general lessons that can be learned so we can avoid similar traps in the future?

This is one of my main concerns with the FPL community. There's so little reflection done on what worked, what didn't, what can be learned. Post-restart chip strategy, bandwagons like Podence and Foden, theories such as "Jose has lost it" and "Villa suck" being proved wrong, all this should be analyzed to the core. Those who do end up as stronger FPL managers and those that don't are worse off.

Yeah I agree, there's more to success than just picking up who you think will score more points than the other the other player. Team structure, price points, 3-4 games defensive rotation, doubling or tripling up based on fixtures, jumping on and off wagons, to name a few.

most of that information is there in Blackbox - just not being spoonfed or taken down to a "How to" level. eg transfers in and out are generally into context eg .as fixtures over x number of games, why they've settled on their formations.

Yup. If it were done adding an in depth-discussion on the reason and over-arching strategy on every single move, Mark & AZ may have to be recording for 4 hours instead of 1.5 or so!

I prefer Bruno as more reliable but Rashford is by no means a bad shout this week.

He's in the Official FPL GW13 squad, no less.

    B) Reece James

      B imo

Great value (even if Azpi is likely to come into the side for a game during the christmas schedule) while Liverpool's defense is just too unstable away from home for Robbo's price

      a.) owns Aubameyang
      b.) captained Aubemeyang

    B) Targett (Burnley H)

Okay final thread about captaincy: Are you going to captain KDB or Bruno and why?

    1. DAZZ
      • 9 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

Im captaining KDB for a number of reasons.

      - Most big chances created in last 4 weeks.
      - WBA worst defence away from home.
      - 2 double digit hauls from most recent 2 at home.
      - Closest ML rival doesn’t own him.

IMO AZ is being very hard on himself over Mahrez. He had one of the unluckiest blanks of all time against Fulham and missed a one-on-one versus United. Still a decent pick if you're willing to risk the rotation, though Zaha and Grealish have the nailedness and that's a major factor in their favor.

yeah, I think thats the issue. Mahrez is just so hit and miss. Y
I actually really like the look of Zaha, he has that "insurance" factor. OOP and on pens now means I need to look at him with a different lens compared to previous seasons.

Mahrez is obviously world class, but he’s so frustrating to own and watch. He has no urgency and goes about his performance so nonchalantly sometimes. That 1 on 1 against United should have been buried

Hit and miss means hold for a while or don't bother with them. He put in an outstanding game against Fulham so you were very unlucky to blank.

I'd be much more concerned if performances weren't good.

The thing about Mahrez is that if he missed out he tends to miss out completely, making him a much more attractive option if you have a decent first bench player. I am considering getting him in for Jota and captaining him but I can see his next rest coming today.

this season that's certainly been the case. Think today he'll come on for last 11 minutes though

I've just brought in Mahrez this week as my Jota replacement so obviously I agree! I looked at Zaha, but didn't like the fixtures. City have great fixtures between now and Februrary - maybe I get rid of Mahrez at some point before then once Palace's fixtures turn nicer again but obviously it depends how this slightly risky punt goes. The rest of my team is full of nailed talisman so I can afford one player that might get the odd benching

I had in mind to use bench boost later due to rotation risk this gw, but planning to free up some cash in coming gws to make room for big hitters so now may be a good time after all?

Bench: McCarthy (ars), Lamptey (ful), JWP (ars), Wilson (lee).

What do you reckon? Go or no go?
