How I plan to make the most of Blank Gameweek 18 and Double Gameweek 19 in FPL

FPL Family’s Sam gives us some initial thoughts on which chips she’ll be using and transfers she’ll be making ahead of the upcoming Blank and Double Gameweeks.

When the Blank and Double Gameweek announcements come, I always like to leave it a few days to let the ground settle before I make a decision on my strategy.

Those first few days after the announcement are awash with contrasting views on how the Gameweeks should be played and there is a lot of discussion about how a certain strategy is the right way to manage these weeks.

The reality is that there is no universal right way. Some FPL managers will find themselves with teams of almost 11 players for the Blank Gameweek, whereas others will maybe only have three or four players. Some of us will have our Free Hit chips intact, while others won’t.

I always find that, after a couple of days, I am able to restrict the noise around the Gameweeks and focus on my individual team. This means that I am in a better position to plan for these Gameweeks and of course the free transfers that lead up to that point in the season.

Double and Blank Gameweeks can often be maximised with a long-term plan in mind, in order to avoid the use of hits and, in some cases, the need to use precious chips.

Black Gameweek 18

Maximising the potential of blank Gameweek 18 and double Gameweek 19

For me, the FPL chips are there to be used aggressively.

If used in a Double Gameweek, the most a Free Hit can do is give you 11 players who play twice. Whilst on paper this seems great, the reality is that other chips have more explosive potential.

Using a Bench Boost can give you up to 15 Double Gameweek players, for example, while the Triple Captain chip will supply you with 11 assets and additional captain returns.

This is why I believe that the Free Hit should always be used in a Blank Gameweek to maximise its return potential.

There is a decent chance that Gameweek 18 will be our biggest Blank Gameweek of the season and so using the Free Hit chip makes sense here.

Firstly, it allows you to use free transfers to target Double Gameweek 19 (more on that later). Secondly, it allows you to have a full squad of the best players available for that week only.

Kane and Son deliver again as Spurs prepare for appealing fixture swing

This Blank Gameweek sees the likes of Spurs, Man City and Everton play, meaning that it is easy to choose a team of players that could easily return good FPL points that week. Son Heung-min (£9.7m) and Harry Kane (£11.0m) are currently second and third in the FPL points table this season, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m), Jack Grealish (£7.8m), Callum Wilson (£6.6m) and Wilfried Zaha (£7.5m) all feature in the top ten and have unaffected fixtures in Blank Gameweek 18.

My team currently contains six players who will play in the Blank Gameweek:

  • Harry Kane
  • Dominic Calvert-Lewin
  • Son Heung-min
  • Tariq Lamptey
  • Ruben Dias
  • Yves Bissouma

For the first couple of days after the announcement, I did consider using my transfers to build for a Gameweek 18 team. However, doing this would mean using my Free Hit in Gameweek 19, which I feel limits my potential for points returns. But more importantly, building a team for Gameweek 18 with my free transfers would mean losing players such as Bruno Fernandes (£11.0m) and Salah – which I definitely do not want to do.

Ahead of Gameweek 14, I removed a player who does play in Gameweek 18, Ollie Watkins (£6.1m), in favour of a player who doubles in Gameweek 19, Patrick Bamford (£6.4m).

There are of course risks to doing this, especially if the offloaded players return in the weeks ahead of the Double and Blank Gameweeks.

However, the players that I am bringing in for Gameweek 19 are also players that I would prefer to hold long term, and thus that opens the possibility of holding onto the second Wildcard until the next wave of rearrangements – including a potentially significant Double Gameweek 26.

I’m currently aiming for a Free Hit side that looks like this:

Whilst of course this may change with injuries, player form and price changes, I feel that this gives good potential for returns during Blank Gameweek 18. I would play a 3-4-3 formation as follows:

  • Jordan Pickford
  • Gary Cahill
  • Ruben Dias
  • Jamal Lewis
  • Jack Grealish
  • Son Heung-Min
  • Kevin De Bruyne (c)
  • Raheem Sterling
  • Harry Kane (vc)
  • Dominic Calvert-Lewin
  • Callum Wilson

Double Gameweek 19

Here is the opportunity that we as FPL managers love the most – the potential to have the majority of our team play twice and further increase returns with the Bench Boost or Triple Captain chip.

Up until late afternoon on Monday, this looked set to be the biggest Double Gameweek of the season. However, the announcement of the moving of the League Cup final from Gameweek 26 to 33 could have ramifications for FPL managers.

As we start to learn more about that Gameweek, my view on whether to use my Bench Boost or Triple Captain may change. But at this point, having as many players as possible playing feels like the way to go – and thus I’m planning to play my Bench Boost in Gameweek 19.

Unlike many other FPL managers, I will not be fielding 15 Double Gameweek players. As is always the case, there are ‘single’ Gameweek players who could return big and punish those who transferred them out.

Spurs play only once but their opponents are lowly Sheffield United, so Son and Kane could easily rack up tidy hauls. The same is also true of the Manchester City boys, who only play Crystal Palace in that Gameweek.

As it stands, I currently own eight Double Gameweek players and have four free transfers left before I play my Free Hit in Gameweek 18. By using those four transfers carefully, I can ensure that I have 12 Double Gameweek players as well as three further single Gameweek players – who will likely include Son and Kane – to enable me to make the best use of the Bench Boost chip.

My FPL squad is presently as follows:

With this as a base point, I plan to do the following to ensure premium coverage of the Double Gameweek:

  • Gameweek 15 – Tariq Lamptey to Stuart Dallas
  • Gameweek 16 – Ruben Dias to Reece James – if fit – or Vladimir Coufal
  • Gameweek 17 – Fraser Forster to Sam Johnstone and Yves Bissouma to a £5.1m-ish midfielder, such as Matt Philips, Ademola Lookman or, if Arsenal have improved, Bukayo Saka.

In doing this, I can have a team which still includes Kane, Son and Calvert-Lewin for their nice single Gameweek fixtures but allows me to bring in Double Gameweek players who have nice fixtures and who I am happy to hold longer-term.

Can Robertson sustain value advantage over Alexander-Arnold after 10-point haul?

The only issue with this strategy is a lack of a Liverpool defender, who I would really like to own.

But, as with the premium attackers this season, it isn’t possible to have all of them and thus I might have to go without Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) or Andy Robertson (£7.3m) for the Double Gameweek. It is possible to budget for Joel Matip (£5.4m) to at least cover for the Liverpool clean sheet potential, however.

Over the next few weeks, as we understand more of the ramifications of Gameweek 26, my thinking may shift away from the Bench Boost and towards the Triple Captain. If this happens, then I can tweak some of my transfers as I won’t, for example, need a playing second goalkeeper.

It will also mean that I won’t need to remove some of the players who have nice fixtures between now and Gameweeks 18 and 19 and could mean that I can budget for that premium Liverpool defender given the lack of need to upgrade others elsewhere.

The Complete Guide to Scout’s tips and advice for FPL Gameweek 14 1

If the Triple Captain becomes my chip of favour then I will put it on someone trustworthy and in form. Liverpool’s games against Manchester United and Burnley look good for handing the armband to Salah and thus he’d probably just get the nod over Fernandes, who has Liverpool and Fulham.

Concluding Thoughts

Planning for the Double and Blank Gameweeks in advance is key. I’ll be carefully watching the markets with regard to the players that I am targeting for Gameweek 19 so as not to be priced out of owning them.

For me, using the chips to aggressively return as many points as possible, rather than to cover up areas of concern, is important – maximise singles with the Free Hit and maximise doubles with the Bench Boost and Triple Captain.

Most importantly though, focus on your own team. It’s so easy to listen to what others are doing because it’s right for their squad and because of the chips they have available. Play the game for your team and to give you the best start over the course of these extraordinary Gameweeks.

Lots of chip strategy discussion. Before anything, IMO the most useful thing you can do is take a long, hard look at your team. How well prepared is it, not only for the BGW and DGW fixtures, but for the run before and after that? Anyone can give advice, and podcast creators are doing well in that aspect, but nobody knows your team and your plans + preferences better than you do. Try and map out your transfers and envision what the team will look like each week.

For example, I am near certain to bring in Son and Kane in 16 - this sets me up nicely for the BGW as the likes of Grealish and Dias are already stationed in my side. However, this naturally means I'm losing out in DGW19 - so I will employ the free hit that week. For another player though, like the ever-vocal Camzy, his team is less suited to GW18, making the FH more valuable, and he prefers to use his BB in GW19 - so that's his plan using transfers. So I'd advise anybody feeling lost to spend a decent amount of free time looking at their team and figuring out what it is and is not capable of.

Yup. As rooted as I am to my FH19 plan, I've been discussing with people who seek advice based on their own squads. This period is very, VERY team dependent, and a lot can change with injuries and Covid-19

For instance, some people rooted to BB19 now have to sell Chilwell and James to maximise points between now and GW18, so they can get folks like Stones, Dias and Dier... Pushing them away from FH18

Some have good players on the bench already and can steer safely towards BB19 with FH18 becoming necessary

Some are well placed to go with either strategy, so they're trying to choose which works best for them. Most of my arguments here are aimed at these managers

Even my FH19 plan can change depending on fixture announcements. Might end up with TC19, which I've never considered. It's all up in the air

Your going to have the same dilemmas in GW26/29 as well.

I’m torn with 6 players for wk 18 and no Spurs.

I’m definitely playing TC in 19 on Salah and WC in 25, BB 26.
Final decision is whether to FH in 18 or the later blank.

We don’t know yet but I have no WC now to optimise the BB without sacrificing the quality of the squad going forward.

WC a week before the later double in week 26 will allow me to get better value imo for my team.

Sadly I used my free hit earlier in the season during a drunken episode of the nadir of my FPL career/luck. So things are tricky for me

It is good advice to take more time to examine what you actually have in front of you.

Waaaaay too much time is spent analysing individual players and individual managers teams and approaches. It's no surprise because imo this is the quick fix to churning out fast turnover journalism and making celebrities of managers. There is a gap in the market for quality work looking at strategy. Black Box hinted it at with their 'learn from our mistakes' remit but they have never properly followed through on that in any focused or structured way,

I would agree with you, but my team is actually not as 'well suited' for GW19 as you may think.

      I have 6 GW19 players and 5 GW18 players right now.

I think most managers are in a similar spot where it's balanced. I just think one strategy is clearly superior in terms of raw potential and I outlined why logistically in my last big post.

I do actually feel strongly now that FH18 and BB19 should be the preferred method for most active managers. Most active managers will have a core of Salah, Fernandes, Bamford, Chelsea/Leeds/West Ham defense in place. Unless your side is pretty differential, the FH18 BB19 strategy will work for you.

Obviously there are exceptions. If you have a team that has like double City defense, Son + Kane + KdB, okay, fine, your team is looking at having a full 18 without needing the FH but 90% of managers on here and in most competitive MLs won't have that.

I know it's safe to be like 'well not everyone is the same', but honestly, I think 90% of managers especially the ones on here are better suited to the FH18 and BB19 strat. If you have Salah, Fernandes, Bamford and at least 2 defenders from teams playing in GW19, I highly recommend FH18, BB19.

    Sanchez
    Dallas | Chilwell | Reguilon
    Bruno | Salah | Son | KDB | Grealish
    DCL | Bamford

    Forster | Targett | Brewster | Lewis

    1FT, 0.4ITB

Guys, currently balancing between in order to use only TC in GW19.

Can move Reguilon and Sanchez for GW19 in order to have 2 more DGW players. Is anybody else worth to move frankly? All have nice fixtures.

Doesn't seem to be many people considering TC in GW19? Personally prefer it over BB so I can focus transfers on the starting 11 prior to FH18 without taking hits. Obviously we have a really strong TC Candidate in Salah too. To get the most out of BB in 19 I'd presumably need to take 3-4 hits and then I'd be left with too much money tied up on the bench afterwards. I'm looking to BB for the next DGW where we will have more time to prepare. Does this make sense or should I just take a few hits and go for BB?

    Cheers

There are 3+ DGWs coming, and we only have three chips. The template for the past few seasons has been BB + FH in the two major DGWs, TC in a minor DGW (Bruno, Aguero/KDB and Grealish this season), FTs + WCs + planning for the BGWs

Perfectly sensible. Two things put me off however - firstly GW19 is coming out of a busy time of year and there could be more residual rotation risks than later in the season. Your TC is less likely to play twice.

Secondly, the next DGW is likely to be smaller, whilst still being large enough to give you at least one really good TC option. Smaller DGWs are better for TC IMO because DGWs are for me a numbers game, maximising your chances of success by loading the bases, and TC is such a lottery (think Mane last year) I would rather exploit a good set of double fixtures by spread betting than by trying to highlight the best single player.

Consider also that TC is hugely overrated. There are a lot of moving parts to a season but your TC is unlikely to make the difference in achieving your overall season goals. Last year I got a nice big Salah TC score and finished outside the top 100k for the first time in, I think, 7 seasons. The two seasons previously I did TC on Sane (1x3) and Kane (1x3) and finished in the top 100k. Obviously there are loads of other variables, and I would have done even better in the Kane/Sane seasons if I had got the TC right, but probably not by much.

Folks, is there a possibility of teams that have a dgw26 but also play in bgw29? Or is it simply the case of those that blank in gw29 will play in gw26 which means no overlap.

Context. I am really struggling to get enough dgw players for BB19 (currently have 6 but that includes chilwell/james/taylor) and with only 5FT's left, it makes it quite difficult. So

A: Build for gw18 (easy), FH19 (good ceiling) and BB26 with 15 doublers depending on fixtures. However, impossible to navigate bgw29 if there are no overlapping teams (hence my question) or

B: Navigate gw18 (with 8 players) and gw19 (with 7/8 doublers), BB26 (with 30 doublers) and FH29 without any stress.

thats what i;m doing, bigger celling fielding an easy 11 gw 18, FH 11 doublers in 19, WC in 25 and BB in 26. in 29 i'll just aim to get the main captaincy options and hope for the best.

Yes there is a possibility but a very small one.

The GW1 & 11 blanks could be rescheduled to DGW26 and obviously there's a chance that some of those teams (United, City, Burnley, Villa, Newcastle) could have a game in GW29 if their opponents and they themselves have been knocked out of FA Cup.

It might take me an hour to dive deep into your team with advice, and I'm fast

You're in charge of this now. People will try to help, but rarely actually follow up because they have other things to do

You're right about the WC being a week too early, but it's not the worst thing ever. Remember that you gain points by removing injured players, and WC can be played in any GW or even wasted in a successful FPL season. Don't beat yourself up over this

By the way, tailor your SGW chip strategy to your squad, especially team value. You're missing a 4th mid in this team due to what I think might be your insistence on BB19. Taking that gameweek in isolation, BB could take you into 100+ points

But are you sacrificing other GWs for it? Are you putting yourself in a corner that necessitates some hits, lots of funds on the bench, or a GW20 WC, making your delayed first WC count for just 7 GWs?

Also.. Why McCarthy + Johnstone? Their fixtures don't dovetail, and neither defence is fixture-proof

      1. RAFA THE GAFFA
        • 8 Years

Thanks mate. Johnstone was mainly for BB you are right. A few decisions are based on that but also some aren’t like Dias, possibly Dier, KDB, DCL.

My bench most weeks would be Johnstone 4.5 Soucek 5.1 Coufal 4.6 Taylor 4.5 so not tons of money but slightly more than usual. Although given the current climate it could help throughout the season. 1 season I’m WC is the fact my bench is far too week.

I could also stick with Grealish and have 1 less BB19 player with this team? Appreciate any time and advice matey, thank you

        McCarthy
        Robbo, Dias, Coufal
        Salah, KDB, Bruno, Grealish, Soucek
        DCL, Bamford

If you do want BB19 and don't consider FH19 by getting Spurs players now (Wolves aren't a strong defence), then I'd prefer the squad in your first post over Grealish. My point refers to tailoring your chip strategy to your team value

If the aim is a bench boost, Raphinha + Adams works better than Grealish + Davis

I'll point out my issue with your plan a bit more clearly:

          1. What you're going with now will use a WC, FH, BB and possibly another WC for the upside of one DGW: GW19
          2. With your current WC, you can set up a BGW18 team of 8/9 template players with 2 future FTs (it's going to take me a while to show you this, but I think you'll see it yourself), TC/FH19, and have two chips + 1 WC free for DGW26, Bruno/Kun/KDB/Grealish in a minor DGW, and the other upcoming blanks

I'm arguing that you have the freedom of choice if you're playing a WC now, and I think Spurs could be your golden ticket

Say, just Son and Dier could have you covered for GWs 15 to 19, and probably beyond

This is what I'd be aiming at on a WC, along with the Trinity. I see why you want Robbo, but he ties up a lot of your funds and Pool is still not a CS machine

    Martinez
    Robbo Dias Lamptey
    Salah KDB Bruno Grealish Raphinha
    DCL Bamford

    (Steer Brewster Kilman Mitchell)
    1.5m & 0 FT

    A) Lamptey/Kilman ➡️ Coufal -4
    (Get Reece in GW17)

    B) Lamptey/Kilman ➡️ Dier -4
    (Get Coufal in GW17)

    C) Keep Lamptey this week if fit (Get Dier for a hit next week alongside KDB to Son)

    Thoughts?

I reckon a FH in GW18 is a waste, but I do agree you get more bang for your buck using a BB in GW19. I'm setting up for GW18 to eventually have 9 scoring players which I reckon is enough. With two free transfers and a -8 after that, I can transform into a 10 DGW / 5 single GW bench boosted squad for DGW19. That's what works for me.

Save the -8 and BB. Just TC Salah in 19 and look to get out as many as you can by saving an FT the week before

How many outfield players would you think is sufficient for blank GW18 - 8?

6 or 7 as long as you have the big hitters like Kane, Son, KDB covered off.

8-9 imho. I’m replacing some dead wood on my bench with playing BGW players. More than likely 2 pointers but I’m killing 2 birds with 1 stone.

Really disagree with this article. If you want to play aggressively, then don’t use the FH for cover.

Using the FH in a DGW has a higher points ceiling than in a BGW.

Moreover if you’re worried about getting players you wouldn’t want just to cover the BGW, switching to a 352 is also a viable strategy to avoid the Hokey Cokey. And it says that Spurs (and City btw) have great fixtures after BGW18.

The part I do agree with is looking at your own team and then make a decision.

    BB GW26

Anyone else with the same strategy?

Liked reading the article - it's always good to read the reasoning of others with a different strategy to myself and weigh up their arguments too. And, to be fair, if I had less BGW players right now, I'd likely be moving towards a BB or TC in 19 preceded by a FH in 18... but I've got enough already for BGW18 and one or two more transfers and I'll have a nice BGW18 team with 9 plus Brewster.

But, I don't agree with this statement from Sam - " Free Hit should always be used in a Blank Gameweek to maximise its return potential"

I'd say the opposite of this is true. You are using your FH as a shield to protect you from falling too far behind those who have 8, 9, 10 or 11 players playing that week. You're not maximising it's potential at all, as there are only a certain amount of players playing, with some very meh fixtures too. Maybe you might get 50 or 60 points if you have a decent week.

But a FH in 19 gives you the chance to pour all money onto the pitch and get the perfect XI which can easily compete with those who have BB with lesser options on the bench who are playing twice, but aren't all that desirable.

Good points. There is no definitive answer as it depends on your strategy, your current team, transfers possible between now and then and thats even before the unknowns like injuries and benchings kick in. Last season i had only 2 DGW players on a double week, people told me i was a mental and ended up with a score inside the top 100k that week

I think it's a cop-out to say 'it depends on your team' every time when giving advice. It's true, it's an important factor, but that shouldn't prevent you from suggesting something and outlining why you think your way is better.

I'm not forcing you to do it, it's an opinion. But I'm going to put down why I think one is better than another instead of sit on the fence. I know this angers people but I think it's more useful honestly and facilitates better discussion.

It's easy to get upvotes when you give out generic advice like:

      - Play your chips based on how your team is structured
      - Consider your team before and after the DGWs and make sure you have good fixtures either side
      - Plan your FTs to give you maximum flexibility

Like that stuff is useless to most active managers I find. When you get stuck in, you want to directly compare aggressive strategies. Players want to know if:

FH18, BB19 is better than organic 18, FH19 or what if they organic 18, TC19 instead?

I'm not interested in pleasantries. I want to directly compare strategies and force managers to think critically about what will score more points.

I can get this team out for no hits in 18....11 starters and 2 on the bench:

    Leno
    Cancelo, Dier, Bellerin
    KDB, Son, Sterling, Zaha
    Kane, Wilson, Watkins

    Forster, Targett, Riedewald, Douglas

Plan then is to FH19 (load up on LIV, CHE, MUN, WHU & LEE) and then revert back to a team of players with good fixtures in 20 (except for Spurs - may look to do Son -> Bruno in 20)

    Sound like a decent plan?

You lose any FT’s the week you use your FH chip.
So make sure you only have one FT going into that week.
