Gündogan the Man City architect as Cancelo plays advanced role again

Burnley 0-2 Man City

  • Goals: Gabriel Jesus (£9.2m), Raheem Sterling (£11.6m)
  • Assists: Bernardo Silva (£7.4m), Ilkay Gündogan (£5.8m)
  • Bonus points: Jesus x3, Gündogan x2, Aymeric Laporte x1 (£6.0m)

GIFT OF THE GAB

Gabriel Jesus (£9.2m) is making a strong case for Pep Guardiola to regularly use a recognised centre-forward again.

Following a period on the sidelines with coronavirus (COVID-19), the Brazilian made just one Premier League start between Gameweeks 14 and 20, in which Manchester City predominantly played around a false-nine option.

However, Jesus has now played 90 minutes in each of the last two Gameweeks and has goals in each of them.

Having grabbed his chance with both hands, he will fancy his chances of earning more regular game-time once again. After all, Guardiola recently reiterated that it would take a sustained period of good form and goal-scoring to get Jesus back in the Manchester City team again.

“There are no doubts about Gabriel. We have been together for a long time. Last game he gave us three points and today he gave us the start. We are delighted with Gabriel all the time. He knows that but his contribution in many ways is fantastic.” – Pep Guardiola

SLOW START

For all the interest in Manchester City’s attacking assets, it took them a little while to work their way up to full steam against Burnley.

Over the first 38 minutes of the game, they had registered just two shots on target and their third-minute opening goal was arguably down to a rare error by Nick Pope (£5.4m).

“We were lucky to score early and after, [in] the first half, we struggled a bit to break the lines. The second half was much better. I want them to do the simple things well. We are trying to do it but today we lost more simple balls than usual. In general, I am satisfied because we had chances to score more goals today. We can do better.” – Pep Guardiola

It was Ilkay Gündogan (£5.8m) who got Manchester City into top gear as Guardiola ushered him to push into the more advanced roles that helped him to four double-figure hauls since Gameweek 13. On Wednesday night, only two colleagues registered more touches in the final third than the German international.

However, as we recently highlighted after the win over Sheffield United, Jesus’ presence in the team does stop Gündogan from shooting as often.

Indeed, against Burnley, he mustered just one effort on goal, his first attempt since the second half against West Bromwich Albion.

Still, with his runs into dangerous areas at Turf Moor, the former Borussia Dortmund man was, at the very least, able to provide an excellent level of creativity.

His passes in the middle of the field, and in the penalty box, were reminiscent of what we have seen Kevin De Bruyne (£11.8m) produce, helping him to an assist for a Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) goal in the first half.

And in the second half, Gündogan won the ball in the middle of the park and played a defence-splitting De Bruyne-esque pass to put Sterling through on goal only for Pope to produce an incredible save to deny the goal.

Manchester City’s fixtures are about to take a tough turn, with Liverpool (away), Spurs (home) and Arsenal (away) their next three opponents, which might lead to some concerns about Gündogan’s long-term appeal.

It must be said that, if Jesus does re-establish himself in the first-team again, which he is threatening to do, we might see less of the budget midfielder unleashing a healthy glut of shots on goal every game. But if he can maintain the creativity on show against Burnley, he can certainly still offer some value at £5.8m, especially as Manchester City’s penalty-taker in De Bruyne’s absence.

LAPORTE IS LEFT BUT NEVER ON THE TABLE

After keeping their 13th clean sheet of the campaign in the 2-0 win at Burnley, Manchester City’s impressive form at the back requires little analysis.

However, Fantasy managers do face some tough decisions surrounding their Citizens defenders with Liverpool and Tottenham up next.

The last time Guardiola’s men did not keep a clean sheet in the Premier League was their 3-1 win over Chelsea (before a run of six on the bounce).

Meanwhile, Spurs (two), Liverpool (one) are two of only three other sides to score against Manchester City since Gameweek 8.

Considering how he has lined up in each of his last two Premier League starts, owners of João Cancelo (£6.0m) might feel more comfortable starting him in Gameweek 23 compared to those holding John Stones (£5.2m) and Rúben Dias (£6.0m).

Officially, Manchester City used a four-man defence on Wednesday night but when they were in possession, Stones, Dias and Aymeric Laporte (£6.0m) spread themselves into a back-three and allowed Cancelo to step into midfield as an auxiliary central midfielder, similar to how he operated in the 5-0 win at West Bromwich Albion.

That led to Cancelo pushing forward and going close to a goal against Burnley, only for Pope to make a save. Crucially, he was replaced by Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.5m) in the 63rd minute, helping him bank a clean sheet and all but guarantee a start on Sunday afternoon.

Cancelo’s touch heatmap in Gameweek 22

If Cancelo were to perform a similar role against Liverpool, he could offer attacking threat despite the somewhat diminished clean sheet potential.

Meanwhile, Laporte continues to pose something of a threat to Stones and, to a lesser extent, Dias. This was his second successive Premier League start although this time he played alongside them. Officially, he was handed a left-back role but, as we have already alluded to, Laporte spent a large amount of time acting as a third centre-back at Turf Moor.

Unfortunately, Guardiola is offering up no clues as to how Laporte fits into the Manchester City picture this season either. Rather than clarify his role against Burnley or elaborate on his long-term prospects for starting, he explained Laporte’s Gameweek 22 start was simply as a result of the busy schedule.

“What we have done so far is because everyone has made an incredible contribution and he is no exception. When we see the February schedule we want to run away but the amount of games we have everyone will be so important.” – Pep Guardiola

Burnley XI: Pope; Pieters, Mee, Tarkowski, Lowton; McNeil, Westwood (Benson 81′), Cork (D Stephens 71′), Gudmundsson; Vydra, Rodriguez (Mumbongo 77′).

Manchester City XI: Ederson; Laporte, Dias, Stones, Cancelo (Zinchenko 64′); Gündogan, Rodri, B Silva; Sterling, Jesus, Mahrez.

A note on Leeds, Raphinha & Bamford for next GW.

On paper... Crystal Palace should be very good game for them. They did lose last time out, but the circumstances were a tad different.

Looking at this GWs stats, Palace conceded more chances that any other team down the left side (PVAs side, which Raphinha is on). Fraser had a lot of joy down that side despite the loss.

They also conceded the most amount of headed attempts (Raphinha is on corners, and some free kicks). Unfortunately Leeds aren't fantastic at set pieces, but Palace is a little bit easier than Everton from an aerial perspective.

They also conceded most attempts in the box. Good news for Bamford.

The fact they have the poorest stats in these areas despite Southampton losing 9-0 in the same Gameweek, is well... something.

Add into the mix that Zaha may miss out & Palace's record without him, could be dicey. Maybe due to his absfense they may defend more? Given the weakness down the left I suppose I wouldn't be surprised to see a Mitchell starting - but maybe the Palace win vs. Newcastle papered over the cracks a little, or Zaha being out means he's required?

1 GW is a small sample size, but the next game is around the corner and Palace don't exactly have the luxury or rotating in many more players.

I've probably just convinced myself not to sell Raphinha (or Soucek!) for Son now... so Salah is on the chopping block despite still getting chances!

Disclaimer: Leeds actually got spanked last time out.

Know Palace had a strong start to the season, so maybe that was just it - or maybe Leeds are the type of team they do well against? Who knows!

I had a selling a good player like Raphinha knowing he will likely score points and then they go and do just that. I have two FTs this week and could sell Salah for Raphinha but I won't.

Hate selling a good player I mean. I keep playing Dallas just because he's OOP even though Leeds have almost no chance of a clean sheet against anyone.

Yeah - can't say much for the Dallas choice this week. I personally thought Leeds defense vs. aerially decent Everton would be a tough one (lo-and-behold, DCL scored a easy-ish header) one - but there was the OOP tag.

He did almost walk away with an assist for Bamford today, but a rough one. Maybe next week is a good week for him looking at this weeks stats instead.

Having said that, I'm sure Eze would love a run at the Leeds defense himself.

It was not really a trap, Liverpool played really well vs WHU... Salah scored twice, looked sharp... on the other hand, Bruno was miserable the last 4.... it was indeed the obvious choice IMO.

Nobody knew how bad the Refs were going to crush Southampton

      - a fake PK! In a 7-0 game
      - a extra time assist! In a 8-0 game
      - stole a goal from Adams

A decent ref would have blown the whistle at 90 and go home.

That’s 11 more points for Bruno!

I own Bruno but that ending was disgusting, he score some dirty points for sure

Coufal definitely plays for me. Have to bench either Stones or Digne... probably has to be Digne given how toothless Liverpool look & how good City look... but tough.

Yeah though, feels like it makes sense to play a West Ham defender this week.

Weird one really. I never wavered toward taking the armband off Salah but in hindsight Brighton have been rock solid and Liverpool crap. Guess I just thought he was back in form now.

Idiot decision. Hindsight as well, even if 9-0 could never be foreseen, should’ve gone for a Bruno against depleted Saints backline 🙁

Yes. For the record, it looks like Zouma is going to miss out this match due to a minor injury anyway, so Rudiger stating tomorrow doesn't really help in that respect - only to see if we still do well against a traditional 'top' team.

Rudiger over Shaw for Everton, just, but I kinda prefer Shaw for United's following fixtures.

      Debating the same two players!

Considering even going for both and dropping Dallas but then my benching headache get even worse.

I like AWB/ Shaw. Both are in great form and will be slightly less likely to rotate than Rudiger imo

        Might do both too tbh.

Have Cancelo so might sell Stones also.. For Rudiger or Peirera

Go 4 at the back with Coufal as back up.

I also have Coufal. Current back line is Robbo, Dias, Stones, Coufal, Dallas.

Definitely need to change things up.

No Cancelo for me is annoying but not worth wasting an FT on upgrading Stones

Which 2 defenders to play alongside Cancelo? Currently playing Dallas Digne but unsure ... feels wrong benching Coufal especially, but wouldn’t play over any of the front 7.
    Play 2 of
    A) Coufal(ful)
    B) Dallas(CRY)
    C) Digne(MUN)
    D) Stones(liv)

    With Cancelo

Would you do Robbo > AWB tonight with 1 of my 2FT to leave me with this? Or is Shaw better?

    3.9itb 1FT
    Martinez
    AWB*, Dias, Coufal
    Salah, Bruno, Son, Gundogan, Soucek
    Bamford, Antonio
    (Johnstone) (DCL, Stones, Dallas)

Cash itb is enough for DCL > Kane when the time is right.

Also tempted by Dallas > CHE def (Rudiger?) but that gives me an even bigger benching headache!!

    Cheers

Shaw more attacking, but also slightly more of a rotation risk with Telles. If you have a decent defensive bench then I'd prob go Shaw for the upside

Even if he is terrible and spurs lose 3-0. He could be a threat against West Brom. They concede 3 a game ok average and spurs aren’t in a position to rest him either.

    Fabianski (ful)
TAA (MCI) - Stones (liv) - Coufal (ful)
Fernandes (EVE) - Salah (MCI) - Sterling (liv) - Grealish (ARS)

    Should Vardy return next week,
Wilson to Vardy and Fabianski to Steer for free?

Understand Fabianski's next two is very appealing but I already own Martinez and would be the only possible way to fund Vardy.

I'm sure Southampton will want to make a response, but with the injuries they have and defensive absences (let's see if Bednarek suspension is overturned) - shipping Wilson might bite back.

NEW/MUN obviously on different levels & I still think SOU vs can get at NEW, but something to bear in mind.

Vardy could of course do well, but it's a bit of a guess if he'll 100% be ready. Then he has Liverpool. Could do well tbh, but doesn't feel a priority transfer when GW24 is a DGW (MCI & EVE/SOU), and MUN play WBA.

As for Fabianski it feels mad to ship before the next two personally.

        Cheers.
The main intention of the trade is to find something different, worth a consideration hence the post.

I agree. I have Coufal if that is any saving grace as cover, Martinez has Brighton gw24 so he could cancel Fabianski out with hypothetically speaking, one clean sheet over the next two for both.

Different is always necessary. Pick the right captain and you can gain the edge on your competitors each week. Maddison is just as hot as Vardy, this season especially recently, and a lot cheaper. Kane is the man to aim to bring in when he returns not Vardy. Kane has DGW’s coming up and good fixtures after the City game.

    2. MidTableFantasy
      • 8 Years

Could be a good should- but Vardy's form wasn't great before injury and who knows how it'll be after. I'd rather have anyone out of DCL/Antonio/Watkins/Bamford to be honest. At least until Vardy finds form. The 13% Vardy ownership is tempting to take advantage of though.

Yes and that's where the interest is given I would like something as a differential compared to the majority.

Wilson is one I look at with high ownership and a tough run of fixtures that could be a trade, as you say Vardy's 13%.

Selecting for low ownership isn’t smart. Select the inform players with good stats and fixtures. No matter what 15 you select and captain each week there will always be differentials.
