Chelsea’s 3-4-3 formation getting best out of Werner and Alonso

CHELSEA 2-0 NEWCASTLE

  • Goals: Timo Werner (£9.2m), Olivier Giroud (£6.7m)
  • Assists: None
  • Bonus: Giroud x3, Kepa Arrizabalaga x2 (£4.7m), Marcos Alonso x1 (£5.7m), Antonio Rudiger x1 (£4.6m)

WERNER DRIVER

Thomas Tuchel appears to be getting the best out of Timo Werner (£9.2m) after he registered a fourth attacking return in three matches in Double Gameweek 24.

Having failed to score a Premier League goal since November, Werner looked a threat against Newcastle right-back Emil Krafth (£4.2m), as he rampaged down the left with Marcos Alonso (£5.7m) all game.

With his new manager deploying him on the left-hand side of the front-three in a 3-4-3 formation, Werner is often finding himself as the most-advanced Chelsea player on the pitch.

This allows Werner to make more runs in behind the defence, which we saw against Newcastle as he was played in time and time again behind Krafth.

In Lampard’s previous system, Werner often found himself isolated as a number nine, or out on the left-wing where he was having to track back.

But the forward is clearly relishing playing higher up the pitch and driving Chelsea attacks, also creating three assists in his last three games.

Tuchel explained after the game that his goal is to get Werner into more advanced positions.

“He did very good (sic) in the first half, second half was too many decisions backwards. I’m convinced Tim was very decisive for us today with an assists and a goal. I’m very happy for that, he really deserved it, he’s been working hard and we could feel this would come. I think he can also play as a double striker, sometimes as a number nine if he’s clever enough to use his speed and runs. His favourite position and his biggest strengths are if he can drift out to the left side.”

Thomas Tuchel

Judging by Tuchel’s comments, and the fact that he has started each of the last four games, Werner seems to be a key part of the new Chelsea side.

With the striker appearing to be back in form in a system tailor made for his style, it could be time to reconsider Werner for our Fantasy Premier League sides.

PARTY LIKE IT’S 2017

FPL managers were treated to another nostalgia trip at Stamford Bridge by the sight of Alonso rampaging down the left.

Frozen out of the team by Lampard, Alonso seems to be back in favour after the arrival of Tuchel, starting three out of the German’s five Premier League games.

Playing in his favoured position of wing-back, Alonso showed just why he can be a devastating FPL asset.

With three centre-backs behind him, Alonso frequently joined in with Chelsea attacks and regularly found himself in the box.

He also wasn’t shy to let fly from range, and had the most attempts on goal of anyone on the pitch.

Alonso’s re-emergence has surprisingly seen Ben Chilwell (£5.9m) left out of the side, a big step-change considering he was one of Chelsea’s best assets under Lampard.

Tuchel has previously said that while he admires Chilwell’s talent, mainly fielding Alonso due to his expertise at wing-back.

“We took the choice for Marcos in a game where we played with five because he was more familiar with the position he played under Antonio Conte. We opted for Marcos against Burnley for his strength in the air then Marcos had a very good match and scored a decisive goal, and from there it was hard to come back. I had a talk with Ben before that match and told him ‘you have to trust me now, I see your potential, I see your talent’.”

Thomas Tuchel

Should Tuchel stick with the back five formation, then it sounds like Alonso is his current first choice. And if the Spaniard can keep delivering four shots in the box every game, then he will be just as good an asset as he was in 2017.

TUCHEL POWER

Chelsea continued their impressive run under Tuchel, with four wins in five games and only one goal conceded.

Added to this, Chelsea also have a strong run of fixtures coming up, as shown in our Season Ticker.

The main threat to any Chelsea asset right now appears to be Tuchel’s rotation, especially with the return of the Champions League.

Only Mateo Kovacic (£5.3m), Jorginho (£4.7m) and Antonio Rudiger (£4.6m) have started all of Tuchel’s five games in charge.

With Kovacic offering little from an FPL perspective and Jorginho’s returns seemingly limited to penalties, Rudiger looks the best option of the three for consistent returns.

GAYLE FLAT

With star striker Callum Wilson (£6.6m) likely to miss the next two months through injury, Dwight Gayle (£5.9m) returned to the Newcastle attack.

But Gayle’s performance summed up another dismal display for Newcastle.

As the heatmap below shows, Gayle failed to perform Wilson’s role of leading the line for the Toon, and found himself dropping back into midfield to try and help cover Alonso and Werner.

(Gayle number 12, Fraser 21)

Gayle only managed one shot during the whole game before he was hooked off and replaced by Joelinton (£5.7m).

The heatmap also shows another Wilson alternative that Newcastle fans, in particular have called for.

Ryan Fraser (£5.6m) may have only had a cameo appearance at Stamford Bridge, but he was one of the few Newcastle players to look threatening going forward.

And with Newcastle playing a fluid front two, many have called for the Scot to be played in a false nine position.

CHELSEA XI (3-4-3): Kepa; Rudiger, Christensen, Azpilicueta; Alonso, Kovacic, Jorginho, Hudson-Odoi (James 78); Werner, Abraham (Giroud 20), Mount (Kante 70)

NEWCASTLE XI (4-3-3): Darlow; Krafth, Lascelles, Clark, Lewis; Willock (Carroll 79), Shelvey, Hayden; Gayle (Joelinton 64), Almiron, Saint-Maximin (Fraser 72)

He was recovering from injury / covid so that also plays into the form.

Let's put it this way, Leeds like to break records in the negative sense.

Brighton were on a losing run and they won Leeds, Newcastle didn't score in like 9/10 games and they scored, Arsenal were on a 2 game winless streak too... so anything is possible as much as I hate to say it.

      I would not get raphina
United will likely have dgw 26 but wouldn't bring rashford back in but keeping him is better than bringing raphina in

Unless you have some free transfers and can bring in raphina gw25 ND take him out for someone other than rashford in gw26

Guardiola: "Gundogan is much better but (the Everton match) might be too soon tomorrow."

He isn't confirmed out, but seems to be around 95% chance he won't feature. Also the usage of the word 'but'.

However, it's a positive that there's a higher chance of him playing against Arsenal with this presser

      1. bunk_medal
        • 11 Years
        1 month, 27 days ago

I think 95% is way too high. We know Gundogan had a scan so Guardiola's statement is basically confirmation the scan was clear. If Gundogan says he's ready in that case then there's a reasonable chance he could still play.

        1. HammersXI

Maybe from the bench, but I really cannot see him starting.

If he was fully ready, Pep would have replied the same way he did for Dias.

Fellow BB26ers, what's the plan if fixtures aren't announced before deadline?(this place will be a mess by tomorrow evening, so asking in advance)

Keeping any of the non golden / yellow players? Southampton Fulham West Brom etc?

What do you your expected benches look like for 26?

    1. HammersXI
      • 8 Years
      1 month, 27 days ago

I've yet to activate my wc and waiting for the news to come in. The issue is that dateline is at 230am which doesn't help me one bit..

If I'm wildcarding I wouldn't want to keep any of those assets you mentioned past GW25 tbh.

The expected bench will have players that might have good SGW. Not aiming for 15 DGW strategies because you're losing out on Leeds and Villa assets which doesn't seem wise.

      1. DK_13
        • 5 Years

Villa is golden fixture. So that's not a problem. Leeds yeah, I will have 2 of them on my bench (raphinha and stujik)
Whats the reason for not activating the wc? Even if fixtures aren't realised before the deadline, WCing and then non BB makes the BB so much harder to play later(plus benching and all due to other competitors or teams on the beach will only increase from this point onwards and BBing in a SGW might mean not even getting a 15 out

        1. HammersXI

Because I'm not sure whether it is worth to take 2 -4 hits this and next week to get 9 DGW players in 26 and 3 DGW players in 25 over WC right now.. I've been stuck in this situation for a while and not sure on what exactly to do atm.

I will WC in 25 or not wildcard at all tbh. I posted on the previous page my pain on whether I should take more hits next week or just activate the wildcard.

Also, if I don't WC now, I'm not too sure when would be the next better time to do so

I would say having 0 Leeds in a mess just from the past couple of games. Several players like Dallas Bamford and Raphinha has hauled.

Which one looks better moving forward? Already took a -4 this week for Raphinha and Ings in.

A - WC Team (11 DGW BB for 26) - Will take -4 to get rid of Raphinha and Ings for Kane and Barnes

      Martinez (Areola)
      Lowton Dias White Stones Struijk
      Salah Gundo Bruno Son Barnes
      Bamford Kane Watkins

      B - Non WC team (11 DGW BB/TC for 26) - , Will need to take another -4/8 in GW26
      Martinez (Forster)
      Lowton Rudiger Digne Dias Coufal
      Salah Gundo Bruno Son ESR
      DCL Bamford Kane

I realized I could just do Ings -> Kane for free and at most Raphinha -> Barnes and bench Rudiger for a -4 if I'm not bothered by a bench boost.

              Yeah sounds even better.
Another option is coufol to someone like a TAA or R periera for a punt before wildcard(bench rudiger and keep raphinha who is in great form).

That is actually a very interesting idea. But the last punt on a premium defender (Digne) has backfired so far. I could do Cancelo / Periera for sure.

Cheers man for the help! I guess I'm keeping m WC for now and just leaving with my -4 this week.

You're really going heavy on Leeds and Southampton,

I would possibly even take a hit next week for Watkins / DCl over Ings tbh. Helps with the fixtures in 29 also and they have a DGW. Besides that, it looks good!

If you have free hit still around then it's fine, you can slowly move them out. I assume Bamford will be a season keeper, JWP and Ings can be moved to Watkins and Grealish or Barnes etc so it's not too bad atm

Not a god TV, so it seems a bit difficult to WC a team with 15 good players to BB in GW26.

Would you BB this GW with: Martinez Mitchell Mee Antonio.

And then WC in GW26 with a good 11.

Just for 26. It's salah + romeu on BB or Barnes/Maddison + son. I think the 2nd option looks way better.
After 26 will take a hit if salah is firing to get son+ lei mid to salah + fodder or do it in 27

The thing with triple lei is you're uncertain of which Leicester will show up.

The one against Liverpool or against Leeds. Would double up maybe. Not triple. Don't see them keeping a CS against Arsenal.

Fair point. I was looking at schmeichel as my permanent keeper. Martinez has horrible fixtures from 31 onwards and will already have him for 26 27 and 29.
I don't like any of the other keepers except Sanchez who doesn't have a double.

“ Salah has scored 24 goals in 34 matches in all competitions this season, surpassing his tally for the entirety of the 2019-20 campaign, in which he netted 23 times in 48 appearances.”

Found that quite shocking given the howls of “fraud” toward him earlier today ...

        1. COVID-CASUAL
            1 month, 27 days ago

The problem for him is all his blanks came in a row, and people remember the negative way more than the positive. Salah is still on track to pass last seasons fantasy points. And if he lifts his assists - which are way down on the last three years - he'll pass his 18/19 total and push 17/18 as well.

Salah is a great pick. Problem with him is at 12.6 mil if I doubt him as a captain every single week, he doesn't really offer great value.
With jota returning soon, his starts will again be a doubt like they were last time(he might play most, but can't captain with that level of uncertainty)

I would do just one of A or B. Look at the playere you have to bench if you make the -8. They all are very capable of getting a clean sheet this week. I would say B is best as Antonio won't have a double in 26 and Ings is likely to have a double after this week as well. Plus looming at A, Digne will have upcoming doubles and Dallas wont. So sets you up better moving forward

A likeable team but I think you are missing a trick going w/out Raphina. If you are playing catchup, you need to maximise these dgws.

Don't think it is a WC team with Antonio in there. Would you lose any of those 5 mids for a hit?

For a dgw most definitely. I would take out Grealish for Raphina.

Ok. I'm not doing that and saving a FT instead! Maybe it depends on how much risk you are willing to take. I am around 25K and have 0.3m tied in Grealish. Would want him for 26 and beyond, so not too keen on this.

50/50 about the move, just afraid getting backfired
                    i am 17K now.

I'm an aggressive player but down the years, dgws have been a gamechanger. You can play conservative and stay at 25k but there needs to be a point of difference at some point if you want to rise up the rankings. Even more important at the top end when you are up against better players.
Is Grealish even worth hanging on to anyway given the dearth of points of late?

it may be a concern that Leicester City is going to play the Europa...

I think Jafalad is true. Honestly if I have free transfer I will get Raphinha and sell Grelish.

            Stats suggest that.

But there is your team anyway, not mine

Target is to have 15 DGW players and BB DGW26. All chips available.

          Would you:
          1. Play WC now
          2. Take -12p hit and save WC for later
          3. Take -8p for 14 DGW players

Do we even know the dgws yet and the full rearranged fixtures?

This is hard because price rises & falls are impacting the best team I can have for BB. Do I trust Ben Crellin percentages and WC or wait

Don't WC until the fixtures are out if taking just -8 or -12 fixes your team and ready for BB.

Triple captain thoughts? Because that will affect my WC plans although I already got 3 Leeds and 2 Saints including Ings without a hit.
WC in 26 won't allow me to captain Kane or any City. But good candidates after 26?

          thanks.

          Pope
          Cancelo Stones Robertson
          Salah Fernandes Gundogan Raphinha
          Bamford DCL Antonio

          Martinez Soucek Coufal Ferguson

          2 FT, 5.4 itb

          1. Soucek >> Son (save 1FT for 26)
          2. Antonio >> Ings (save 1FT for 26)
          3. Antonio >> Watkins (save 1FT for 26)
          4. Coufal >> Dallas (save 1FT for 26)
          5. Combine 2 of the above??

          Thanks all
