Captain Sensible

Who is the best FPL captain for Gameweek 30?

Fantasy Premier League managers have a healthy selection of captain candidates for Gameweek 30 as we come to the end of this calendar year’s first international break.

While Harry Kane (£11.6m) and Bruno Fernandes (£11.5m) seem to be the flavour of the week at the moment, both Patrick Bamford (£6.7m) and Raphinha (£5.7m) could offer as much, if not more, potential as they prepare to host Sheffield United.

With so much focus on the premium heavyweights this week, the Leeds duo could provide a perfect opportunity for anyone looking to go against the grain.

That said, both Kane and Fernandes are hardly bad options for Gameweek 30 while Chelsea and Everton face appealing match-ups with West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace respectively.

As always, the Captain Sensible article is here to help you decide on your Gameweek 30 captaincy. As this includes extensive data from Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area, only those with a valid subscription can access it in full.

CAPTAIN POLL

As alluded to above, Kane is the convincing leader of this week’s Captain Poll having gained 46.7% of the total votes so far. Also of interest is the fact that he is also the only Spurs player to make the top-five ahead of a favourable trip to Newcastle. Lingering doubts over Son Heung-min’s (£9.4m) fitness and Gareth Bale’s (£9.7m) minutes are likely to be contributing factors.

Fernandes (17.2%) looks set to claim second place in this week’s poll, followed by Raphinha (7.7%) and Patrick Bamford (6.0%). Chelsea’s Mason Mount (£7.0m) closes out the top five with a 3.8% of total votes.
votes so far.

While the presence of Kane and Fernandes in the top two spots should come as no surprise, Raphinha and Bamford are not getting as much attention as they deserve in my opinion.

Surprised DCL is so low in the captaincy poll. Think he bangs against Palace this week. Seriously thinking of putting the armband on him this week myself.

GL with that pal. It was a toss up between including him and Antonio in my squad.

      Decent call imo

Palace defence has been looking more solid recently and some of the recent numbers are skewed by the Brighton match. That said if James is back in harness I can see at least 2 goals in it for Everton and DCL is likely beneficiary. But if no DCL then perhaps no party.

Wanted to double up on Chelsea defence (already got Alonso), but now have no idea who to pick.
Rudiger and Christensen potential rotation risks after international minutes
Zouma looks likely to play this game but probably not a starter long-term
Azpi is the most nailed but quite expensive and interferes with transfer plans
Now considering just going for Reece James, with his relatively low price and positional rival Hudson-Odoi a doubt for this game.

Chris only started two and kept cleanies in both, Rudi started all 3 in some suspect German performances.

He's in my team currently, though West Brom does seem like the perfect game to bring Thiago back in. But then again they have Palace next GW so that could be a good opportunity also.

Twisting, not sticking and making characteristic early transfers I'm now settled on this

    Martinez
    Cresswell Dallas Shaw
    (R)aph Bruno Son Jota Lingard
    Kane Bamford

    Ederson Konsa Stones Watkins

It's a wholly unnecessary but rather satisfying minus 4. Next week's hit is likely to be Tierney and Maddison in for Raph and Dallas. Rather like the look of that going forward despite the complete absence of Chelsea defence.

      Perfectly fair call

It's also quite possible that Kane is back in the number 10 role and Son up top as finisher. Given fall out from EL and benching against Villa I doubt very much Bale has a role to play. My feeling is Mou will go back to the system that worked decently early season and will prioritise players with attitude for the run in.

Yeah exactly spurs weren't great either vs villa but got the win. The changes were to account for the lack of son. Think your right!

    1. pingissimus
      • 5 Years
      3 years, 1 month ago

      Not really

It's an absolutely prime fixture. Spurs have Newcastle but that's away where Spurs are typically less than lethal and Newcastle home form in recent matches has been a story of defying XGC. Their XGC is fairly similar to Chelsea when you look at last 6 home matches.

Do you believe in XGC as a barometer of a defence?

Chelsea in last 6 home matches have XGC of 4.69 and Newcastle 5.43 - that's the 4th best in the league over that period

    Fixtures for Chelsea were

    Everton
    Man U
    Newcastle
    Burnley
    Wolves
    City

Fixtures for Newcastle were softer of course but not outrageously so bar absence of City.

    Villa
    Wolves
    Southampton
    Palace
    Leeds
    Leicester

Quite happy to avoid a Spurs captain this week.

    1. Don Kloppeone
      • 6 Years

I do hear this argument but I also think expect Spurs to be quite fired up and Mou to try and reignite the Kane/ Son duo

      1. pingissimus
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 1 month ago

Kane Son yes but it was the Kane Son Bale combo that lit fires really - I just don't; see Mou going that way again. Kane and Son are perfectly decent captain calls this week but more I suspect on their own merits than the softness of the fixture.

I thought that Newcastle looked pretty solid defensively against Brighton before the injury last time out.

Been taking an FPL break for most of this IB. Now back to planning! Would you still stick to WC31 with this lot or hold off until 33/34?

    1FT 6.6itb WC remaining
    Martinez
    Dallas, Shaw, Dias
    Son, Gundo, Raphinha, Lingard
    Kane, DCL, Bamford
    (Pope) (Bale*, Coufal, Dunk*)

    Potential moves:

    A) Dunk > Azpi/ Rudi (start over Lingard)
    B) Bale > Salah/ Bruno
    C) Dunk, Bale > Azpi/ Rudi, Salah/ Bruno (-4)

    Cheers!

Spurs have SHU, LEE and WOL after 33 so Kane and Son is worth keeping. Depends what you want to do with City assets with BGW33.

      I wouldn't take a hit if WC31.

If open to spend big in Chelsea def then may as well go for Azpi

So you’d be leaning to A

Reckon 31 is still optimum WC week if no other chips?

I'd think about doing B for Bruno and reevaluate next time

Think you have a chance of getting thought to 33 without WC. The triple Leeds look is suboptimal of course 🙂 But there again Leeds attack actually did ok in the reverse fixtures it was just the defence that was a no go area. Lose Dallas for Rudiger say in 31 and you might be close enough.

(Looking here at Lloris in in 32 as 3rd Spur)

Very few actually have the cajones to move off Kane for captain.....lots of chat but in the end almost everyone will give him the armband
