Saints’ defensive woes bode well for Kane and Spurs in Double Gameweek 32

WEST BROMWICH ALBION 3-0 SOUTHAMPTON

  • Goals: Matheus Pereira (£5.4m), Matt Phillips (£5.1m), Callum Robinson (£5.2m)
  • Assists: Mbaye Diagne (£6.0m), Okay Yokuslu (£4.5m)
  • Penalty miss: James Ward-Prowse (£5.9m)
  • Penalty save: Sam Johnstone (£4.5m)
  • Bonus: Johnstone x3, Robinson x2, Pereira x1

There will no doubt have been a few more Triple Captain chips activated between the hours of 6-8pm on Monday evening.

Southampton are one of the two sides that Tottenham Hotspur face in Double Gameweek 32 and the Saints turned in a thoroughly abject showing against West Bromwich Albion, succumbing to a 3-0 defeat.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side should have been well behind even before Matheus Pereira (£5.4m) opened the scoring from the spot, with Mbaye Diagne (£6.0m) wasting a big chance and having a headed goal chalked off for a more-than-dubious offside call.

Goals from Matt Phillips (£5.1m) and Callum Robinson (£5.2m) either side of half-time gave the scoreline a more just feel, with James Ward-Prowse’s (£5.9m) missed penalty compounding a miserable evening for the visitors.

While the distraction of an upcoming FA Cup semi-final could be used in mitigation for their wide-open defensive display, this wasn’t a one-off for the Saints.

Southampton have shipped 11 more goals than any other club from Gameweek 19 onwards (37 in 14 matches), 12 of which have come in their last four games.

No team have conceded more goals via the penalty spot (seven) in the Premier League this season than the Saints, either, which will be music to Kane’s ears.

As for the Baggies, they have now scored eight goals in their last two outings.

There have been eye-catching displays from the budget-friendly Robinson, Diagne and Phillips in Gameweeks 30 and 31 but from an FPL perspective, Pereira being on penalties and now in his favoured number 10 role has been key to unlocking his long-dormant points potential.

The playmaker has had nine shots in the last two Gameweeks alone, twice as many as any of his teammates.

Defensively, the impact of the excellent Okay Yokuslu (£4.5m) and Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£4.6m) in front of the back four has been key: since the former’s debut in Gameweek 24, only Manchester United have conceded fewer goals than the Albion.

The remaining fixtures may not look great for the Baggies on paper but four of their final seven games are against mid-table sides, the type of opponent that subscribers of the ‘nothing to play for’ theory love.

West Brom XI: Johnstone, Furlong, O’Shea, Bartley (Ajayi 85), Townsend, Yokuslu, Maitland-Niles, Phillips, Pereira, Robinson (Gallagher 72), Diagne (Robson-Kanu 76).

Southampton XI: Forster, Walker-Peters (Djenepo, 87), Bednarek, Vestergaard, Bertrand, Ward-Prowse, Diallo, Walcott (Adams, 76), Armstrong, Ings (Tella, 87), Redmond.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION 0-0 EVERTON

Saints' defensive woes bode well for Kane and Spurs in Double Gameweek 32 1
  • Bonus: Robin Olsen (£4.5m), Lewis Dunk (£5.0m), Ben White (£4.5m) x3

A tedious affair at the Amex Stadium was more notable for a player who wasn’t involved than the events on the pitch.

This didn’t feel like a match in which one team racked up 23 shots but that’s exactly what Brighton did, continuing a season-long profligate trend: their goal conversion rate of 8.2% in 2020/21 is worse than all bar two teams.

A more fitting reflection of the game was that there were only four shots on target throughout, with the south-coast clash the only Gameweek 31 fixture that didn’t feature a single ‘big chance’.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin‘s (£7.6m) absence was not only keenly felt by an impotent Everton attack, but it also had implications – both positive and negative – for the legions of Fantasy managers who own the England international.

Carlo Ancelotti is hopeful of having his striker back for Gameweek 32, along with Allan (£5.2m) and Andre Gomes (£5.3m):

In the last training session, Dom had a little problem on his abductor. He came here but this morning he was not comfortable so I prefer to leave him out. It’s the same with Allan and Andre Gomes – they are not 100%. I hope they will be available for the next game.

An injury-hit Everton – who are Spurs’ other Double Gameweek 32 opponents – fielded six recognised defenders in the Monday night stalemate, with one of them, Yerry Mina (£5.5m), becoming the latest addition to the casualty list.

Ancelotti added after full-time:

Yerry Mina had a muscle problem on his adductor and I don’t think he will be available for a few weeks. The others, I hope to recover. For sure, Pickford will be available, I hope Allan and Gomes will be available, Calvert-Lewin and Joshua King.

Albion’s clean sheet was their tenth of the campaign, seven of which have arrived in 2021 – some belated reward for a solid backline with the third-best expected goals conceded (xGC) tally in the Premier League this season.

Brighton XI: Sanchez, Veltman, Dunk, White, Moder (Burn 87), Gross, Bissouma, Lallana, Trossard, Maupay (Jahanbakhsh 87), Welbeck.#

Everton XI: Olsen, Godfrey, Mina (Iwobi 58), Keane, Coleman, Davies (Broadhead 88), Holgate, Sigurdsson, Digne, Rodriguez, Richarlison.

    Restated repost

If you look at second half of season from GW20 on there's a slightly different picture of what are the teams to attack.

Leeds and WBA have conceded the same number of goals as Leicester, Villa and Liverpool and are very mid table for defence. Burnley are down with Palace and SHU behind Southampton. The picture changes marginally for WBA and Leeds if you look at XGC but not radically.

Maguire could be awkward given the YC situation.

Ideally I'd add a mid but Alonso Cancelo Maguire Targett is very suboptimal. Dunk could be tidy! I'd be looking to bring in one defender who has solid fixtures and isn't a rotation worry. That rules out Spurs and Arsenal for me.

I'd go Liverpool. Just a question whether you believe TAA is worth the money and if you can spend the extra 3 million in. a worthwhile way upfield.

I got Lloris on WC only for this GW. However, looking at Emi's bad fixtures, I think I may just have to keep him mostly for the upcoming double and less for his save points. I want to have a set & forget, maybe will land on Leno later on. Not sure.

              Interesting

In an analogous spot but thinking Meslier is the one on form and Leeds have some very tidy defensive fixtures after 33. Seems odd to go Leeds over Arsenal for defence but form and returns seem to point that way.

Want Son this week and need funds to shift him to Salah for free next week. Think Gundo DCL > Son Nacho (-4) probably has the biggest potential to pay-off here?

Cress is someone I could drop over DCL, but would need to move him to a 4.3 def for a hit to afford Salah next week. Doesn't sound so great.

Palace Southampton Everton and Villa look fairly likely pending decision on rearrangement of 36-38.

The cup semi finals could throw a spanner in the works and create blanks and doubles for either City or Chelsea and Leicester in 35/36 on one scenario. The Chelsea double followed by a blank in 36 would be especially awkward given fixtures.

That's all hypothetical. Go to Crellin on Twitter for a breakdown of what may possibly happen.

Serious upside chasing as to close the gap to the top spot in my mini-league.

    Problem:
    -Maddison
    -Alonso

Transferred both in as high potential but not nailed on.

Any advice/predictions?? love their low ownership but both didnt play.

    2. pingissimus
      • 5 Years

      Both could go either way

Think Maddi is the better option. Alonso has huge upside of course but getting the combo right of his both appearing and hauling is iffy. Think Maddi is likely to come into his own from 33 on. WBA are tough to break down and that game falls just after the cup semi.

Palace Southampton Newcastle is almost as good as it gets. In a way a blank next week makes him better as no one else will go there much if that happens

        Really insightful comment.

My thinking on Madders was similar. Planning to bench him gw32 as Iheanaco covers me. From there onwards I also see serious upside potential.

My problem lies with Alonso. I’m 3rd in my mini league but if I want to pinch it I need serious upside chasing and low effective ownership... haven’t made up my mind but if I keep him and it pays off I might just make up 10-15 points off the spots above me

      Keep both.

Maddison only missed the weekend due to protocol breach rather than anything football related. As Pingissmus says he has a tough fixture against WBA after the cup outing but has great fixtures thereafter.

Alonso is probably dependent on Chilwell starting the City cup semi at the weekend to play against Brighton which I think they will want him for. A Chilwell start tonight will probably strengthen the hand of Alonso owners to hold for another week.

That's unlucky. No-one could see he would haul in the City game. He was 2nd on my bench and I didn't get any jam. The 4th and 5th def was always the headache on WC31. I was half tempted to keep Dallas but opted for Coady instead, though really it's Azpi andDias stinking up my team! I think GW 33 is a good excuse to be done with Pep roulette (also bought Dias in on WC having had Stones and Cancelo before that...).

It was always the plan to get Dallas back for the final few, but he's only going to increase in price.

      Ouch

Lingard bench jam is very jammy indeed.

Especially as I was convinced DCL would be a 2 pointer!

Decided not to check league positions after DCL no show - feel certain that it's turned things upside down.

Thoughts on this wildcard? Will probably be dropping Son after the double to upgrade Vydra.

    Martinez Leno
    Dias Coady Rudiger Coufal Phillips
    Salah Jota Son Bruno Lingard
    Kane Iheanacho Vydra

          Nothing necessarily

If you're after some differentials, I would go without Bruno and Dias. Possibly double up on Arsenal defence and then take a punt on Havertz or Maddison.

Was debating Holding v Rudiger, but have been stung every single time this season that I've doubled up on a defence which is why I split the risk. Had been considering Puli or Maddison for next week when Son blanks, will wait and see how the Maddison breach of protocol thing plays out.

It's a risk for sure, but when it works it's dreamy. Also I think a lot of people will bring in Holding, so actually one Arsenal defence doesn't really do much for your rank.

Issue is that Son has SHU after the blank (and then lee, WOL, AVL), so I don't think it's worth ditching him.

And as far as I'm aware Maddison was punished for the one game and back in the squad now.

Downgrade Dias to fodder like Holding and use funds to get a premium def in

I guess Lingard is defiantly worth a -4 this week now?

If you think he can keep up his form

I don't want to bench Dallas but I can't think who I would take out for him...

    Schmeichel
    Trent, Reguilon, Rudiger, Dawson
    Fernandes, Son, Mount, Jota, Lingard
    Kane

    Forster, Dallas, Bamford, Welbeck

Dawson - WHU are conceding goals rather easily now and Newcastle attack is getting better in recent GWs

    Son vs Kane for TC

    Facts for Son
Last match 2 shots on Target // 3 Key Passes
    Record v Everton(Last3): 1 assist
    Record vs Sou(Last 3): 4 goal 1 assist

    Facts for Kane
Last match 1 shot on target// 1 Key Pass
    Record v Everton(Last3): None
    Record vs Sou(Last 3): 2 goal 4 assist

Son did look better vs Manutd maybe because Maguire had Kane in his pocket and Son was against weak positioned Wan Bissaka. If we include FA cup match Everton vs Tot which ended 5-4, Kane had a goal and Son had 3 assists.
Fair to say Son TC looks better, just need some help from Sou and Eveton RB chances conceded (Son) vs Headers conceded(Kane).

I don't think you can go wrong with either option. Soton are already on the beach and Everton have a long injury list. Son for extra points due to being a mid or Kane due to pens

Is Maddison going to play GW32, reports said he was out partying with some teammates that caused them to be out for the game against the Hammers

Should do but they have an FA Cup semi beforehand which I'm pretty sure he will start in before. Maddison moves can probably be held off a week. WBA a few days after a cup semi is less appealing than it would have been a few weeks ago.

Team's a bit of a mess but at least have Kane & Son.

    2 FT's, what to do?

    Martinez (Sanchez)
Dias / Digne / Azpi (Dallas / Lowton)
Salah / Mount / Son / Gundo (Rapinha)
    Bam / DCL / Kane

    Sanchez & Gundo/Raphinha > Lloris & Lingz
    Sanchez & DCL > Lloris & Nacho

    Anything else? WC available

B - but there is probably someone else you are playing in A that you haven't mentioned

This. Another factor that needs to be considered is captaincy. I have Salah (c) for a few GWs. Are you happy to go with Jota or someone else
