FPL team guide 2021/22 – Crystal Palace: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with this preview of Crystal Palace.

It is the end of an era at Selhurst Park, with Roy Hodgson’s departure as manager preceding 11 first-team players effectively leaving the club after contracts ended – though Christian Benteke (£6.5m) and Joel Ward (£4.5m) did pen new deals this summer.

The Eagles were relatively comfortable in their bid to remain in the Premier League last season, finishing 14th on 44 points.

Despite being thought of as defence-first unit under Hodgson, only relegated side West Brom (76) and Southampton (68) conceded more goals than Crystal Palace (66) in 2020/21.

The New Vi-era

If Hodgson was a defensively-minded coach, the signs are that new manager Patrick Vieira will focus more on attack.

However, his Nice side were based on possession and being hard to break down rather than any sort of offensive verve.

You can read a full profile of the former Arsenal midfielder via the link below:

Crystal Palace attacking statsTotalRank v other PL teams

Shots in the box22418th
Shots on target13116th
Big chances4619th=
Expected goals (xG)34.4919th

The attacking numbers from last season will not make for pretty reading in Vieira’s Palace in-tray.

One positive in terms of going forward was that penalty taker Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) had his best goalscoring campaign in 2020/21, netting on 11 occasions including two spot-kicks.

Just three of those were scored from January onwards, however, with the Ivory Coast international missing a month’s action in February due to injury.

Zaha logged just two regular assists over the campaign, though did rack up an ‘expected assists’ (xA) figure of 3.85.

Creative design

Palace’s top assister (eight) from last season was Eberechi Eze (£6.0m), who will not be back in action anytime soon after rupturing his Achilles in May.

Eze created more chances than any other Eagles player last season but some context is needed: his minutes-per-key pass average (60) was inferior to 50 other Fantasy midfielders.

Recruitment is, unsurprisingly, going to be one of Vieira’s biggest tasks during pre-season. Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish said on July 4:

We have a lot to do to prepare in the coming weeks and I look forward to working closely with Patrick and Dougie (Freedman) in bringing in some new faces to help us all to a successful season.

One new face already in the door is Michael Olise (£5.5m). In 46 Championship appearances for Reading last season, the attacking midfielder scored seven times and notched 12 assists.

“I had a conversation with the manager and he was talking about how he sees me in the team: the plans, the development and the vision for the club. It’s very good, so I thought it was a good fit.” – Michael Olise

With a paper-thin squad and a lack of creators at the moment, Olise could be expected to make the Premier League step-up from the off at Selhurst Park.

“I think [my role] is to make him do what he’s doing best: enjoying his football on the field, scoring goals, going forwards and playing with personality. He’s got that in his locker.

“I think it’s important to refresh the squad: to bring some new faces, to bring young talent to this football club. This is a really good signing for us. Of course, there will be more signings coming.” – Patrick Vieira

Its harsh Bamford but Raph for me.
Its the comparisons to other players that sway it for me, plenty of 8m or less fwrds that 'look' good, less so with 6.5 mids

Does White's transfer make him a sure starter at Ars to begin the season?

you’d think for that money but we seens other big money players not starting before.

I suspect preseason will tell us - they’ll want to get the defense set ahead of the season.

I think Holding will start at least the first few. Lots of changes being implemented immediately, so consistency in this one spot through transition makes sense.

Fair if you assume Xhaka and Bellerin are staying, Saka not rested, and Gabriel not injured.
That is not my assumption though.

Morning, just bored and any feedback/ guidance appreciated-

    Sanchez
    Forfana TAA Shaw
    Salah Bruno Buendia Raph 8M
    DCL Watkins

    4.0 GK White Manquliio Obafemi
(i dont mind all the cash on the pitch, normally end up using a early WC)

    Options
    1. Grealish, LEI mid, Torres, any others? (if any cash left up the bench) Also thinking Buendia could go to Saka later that 8M spot could be Grealish and just keep him. Watkins could go later after Villas initial good fixtures
    2. 4.5 mid, Wilson over Obafemi, 0.5 to boost bench

I know 2 looks most sensible but didnt we find last year that mids were the players we wanted?

Early days but genuinely interested in input

Pretty much the same as mine, I've just got Toney instead of Buendia and got 2 5m defenders instead of Fofana and Shaw. I like it

If you are comfortable with the money on the field I’d do Grealish for the 8.0m and leave the rest.
Or move Watkins/Buendia to someone else if you’re worried about triple Villa.
Personally I’d keep Watkins and probably try someone other than Buendia.

I think this is a real good team to me.

Thanks both, I am happy with cash on the pitch.
I think Grealish could be a 'keeper' for me and could get off triple Villa with one of-
Watkins out after GW3 and/or Buenida to Saka later.
Haha, plans always work out right?

Would love an extra .5 for Buenida to LEI mid and keep Grealish!

Personally not a fan of Toney and I guess grealish may not start gw 1? A good team. I always go for the lowest owned bench fodder (manquilo) just in case their price drops to 3.9 which can be quite I annoying further down the line.

      Like it a lot.
I’m worried to pick Grealish, personally. But agree about the price points/flexibility/balance. If we get some positive signs about Jack, I might end up with this structure (currently have Son in Jack spot and no Trent).
I’m also on Bam over DCL and would lean Watkins/Nacho over Antonio , but those could go either way.

It's a good draft. Goalkeeper-wise, that's Foster - Forster's long gone. Ederson will score highly over the season but not the best choice in terms of points-per-million. If you find you want to spend another 0.5 or 1M on a striker, i'd shave the cost off the keeper.

First thoughts are a little heavy at the back and no 8m ish slot in midfield but so many good options back there.

    Sanchez
    TAA Digne Shaw Coufal
    Salah Bruno Buendia
    DCL Antonio Toney

    Foster Raphina Gilmore Williams

    Thoughts?

    1. Andy_Social

It's very good. I wouldn't worry about the defence, what you've got is Coufal normally first sub, but I always prefer a solid option there as they quite often have to cover for a rested player. You might find you want to drop Buendia or Toney for some fixtures too.

The draft I have for a 8m is

      Buendia to Grealish

I prefer your original one. I'd want to wait and see on Spurs defenders - on paper they look like bargains, but with a new manager I'd wait a couple of GWs. I wouldn't sacrifice TAA either.

Hello all, I posted this earlier, but posting it now again for a different crowd.

I run a Fantrax draft league and we are in our 8th season right now. We started off as a close knit group of lads from FFS who got tired of FPL and wanted to play draft and now (slowly) grown into two divisions of 13 teams each. We had a slew of retirements after last season and now have 6 open spots in division 2.

A little bit more info - scoring has a FPL base, but added tweaks of our own over the years. Claims are done through a bidding system so every manager has a fair shot for claiming players. $10 buy-in for division 2. We run group chats on WhatsApp, so that would be required. Draft is at the end of July (slow draft). I'm happy to answer anymore questions!!

Email is on my profile for everyone interested!

Cheers for the feedback yesterday and I've reconsidered BB, think it's better held onto this season.
Still plan on going with a differential team and captains for the early GWs in the hope of getting off to a flyer.
Here's the first draft of my non BB team for your perusal:

    Ederson
    Trent Robbo Cancelo
    Havertz(C) Son Torres Buendia
    Cavani Wilson Toney
    (Foster Sarr Lamptey White)

no just one mate...I think City and Liverpool will probe to be the best defences in the league by some way so staking my claim early on that one.
As a MUN fan I really hope we sign Varane though as that could really make a huge difference and make me reconsider the double double defence.

    4. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years

Hey again. At first glance it looks a terrific squad, but on closer forensic analysis, it worries me.

Ederson - I commented a few posts above about points-per-million, but if you want season-long security, it's fair enough.
TAA/Robbo - I was on that pairing until I read the article here on VVD. I'd want to be 100% certain he's fit to start to double up on the Pool defence. As of now I have Trent only.
Cancelo is one of Pep's rotation nightmares - terrific if he plays; too expensive when he doesn't.
Midfield - going without both Salah and Bruno is either super-brave or super-foolish. Both are nailed starters whereas Havertz isn't, so that's a gamble too far for me.
      Torres - same rotation gamble.
Up front, I've got Cavani myself, but together with your many punts, an additional player who may be rested or get short minutes adds to the risk.
Sarr on the bench - normally 6m for your weakest front 8 player would be too much, but as you're more than likely to have at least one of your front 7 not show up on any given GW, it probably works here.

tl;dr - too many punts. Keep 2 or 3 for shits-'n'-giggles value, but add a few more reliable assets.

      1. jia you
        • 7 Years

get your concerns for sure but I want to just gamble and have fun...played seriously last season and had a shocker.
I'm aware of Torres and Cancelo being huge rotation risks and I could just go Dias and punt on a more solid long term hold double up (as I think City will get the most CS) Trent and Robbo are in for their attacking prospects more than anything and can easily downgrade one of Liv look a bit sluggish early doors.
I feel Havertz will be nailed on for sure but we can disagree on that one mate haha...cheers.

          Bednarek
          Walker-Peters
          Vestergaard

Rumour has it he expects a higher salary than Danny Ings. I wouldn't be surprised if that gap is too wide to close. Saints have signed a
French fullback who looks like going straight into the first team, so Williams would probably only be on the bench anyway. If I were looking for a 4m defender bench option I'd warm more to Hoever at the moment.

Replacement for Bertrand, so yeh. Saints have a clear back 4: Perraud, Vestergaard, Bednerak and KWP. Couple of back ups in Stephens and Saliba, but they do need FB cover.

Well I dunno. He'd go from 3rd choice ie not in the matchday squad at United, to first bench. But anyway, the dispute seems to be over his insatiable pay demands rather than pitch time - if you believe the gossip, that is.

    Latest draft…thoughts?

    Bachmann Foster
    TAA Shaw Ayling Lamptey Fofana
    Salah Bruno Raphinha Buendia Bissouma
    DCL Antonio Iheanacho

    1. Andy_Social

Massively template now Bachmann is becoming popular. So, solid!

Not necessarily him personally. There are 4 7.5 forwards who show up in most drafts - he could be Watkins or the lesser Wilson.

            • 7 Years
            2 years, 9 months ago

yeah fair enough, much prefer the other two over Antonio myself...toss up between them for me but if (and it's a huge if) Wilson is and stays fit he could be great value

I'd say there are only 9 viable striker options, 8 of whom are the top 8 in ownership at the moment. Only one is premium - Kane. For me, Antonio and Wilson are bottom of the pile. Discounting Kane unless he goes to City, that leaves 3 from 6 for me. The 6 are: Cavani, Bamford, DCL, Watkins, Nacho and Toney.

You see hardly any others except for 4.5 benchies in drafts here. Of course, if Ings moved to City or Spurs the picture would instantly alter!

Toney's the current most popular striker, so yeh, that would make your draft the ultimate template! nb I've got Toney too 😉

Newcastle fixtures decent, him on pens and under the new coach were an very attacking side as the season closed out, with his goal involvement as a talisman he's a very good pick IMO. Still prefer Antonio and Watkins at that price point though.

He is worth the punt and could be a season keeper if he stays fit but my team structure only allows for one 7.5 forward and I think I will start with Watkins for the first 3 then switch over to Wilson or Antonio depending on price changes and the like

    Robertson Shaw Lamptey Ayling Kelly
    Salah Fernandes Son Buendia Raphinha

    need help

    1. Would you downgrade Buendia > 6.0m (eg sarr, fournals) mid and upgrading kelly > 4.5m def (eg white, ait nouri).

    Currently sitting on this

    Sanchez (Ward)
TAA - Shaw - Lamptey (Ayling, Omobamidele)
Salah - Fernandes - Grealish - Raphinha (Gilmour)
    Watkins - Antonio - Toney
    .5 ITB

Similar to the current template for great reason - it's very strong. Largely risk free, hope Grealish stays, waiting for Sancho's price and important transfer deals to happen to shake things up.
