The Promoted

What can FPL managers expect from Brentford’s defence in 2021/22?

Our series on the newly-promoted Premier League sides continues with this look at Brentford’s goalkeeper and defenders.

In this article, we will assess the Bees’ overall clean sheet chances and then present a player-by-player rundown of their backline ahead of their Fantasy Premier League (FPL) debuts.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

WHAT IS BRENTFORD’S CLEAN SHEET POTENTIAL?

Brentford were the highest-scoring team in the Championship last season, with much of the focus from an FPL perspective consequently focusing on Ivan Toney (£6.5m).

There has been less attention on the Bees’ backline, with all of their goalkeepers and defenders owned by fewer than 3% of Fantasy managers at present.

Perhaps there’s some justification for that: Thomas Frank’s side had the worst defensive record out of the three promoted clubs (42 goals conceded in 46 matches) and kept fewer clean sheets (17) than Norwich City (18) and Watford (23).

The Bees were remarkably consistent whether at home or on the road, conceding just two more goals on their travels than they did in west London:

PWDLFAGDPTSCS
Total46241577942+378717
Home2312923920+194510
Away2312654022+18427

That was also a trait of Brentford’s previous full season under Frank in 2019/20 (18 goals conceded at home, 20 away).

2020/21 total (rank v other Championship clubs)
Goals conceded42 (4th)
Clean sheets17 (=5th)
Shots conceded396 (2nd)
Shots on target conceded141 (=5th)
Saves made from shots in the box67 (=10th)
Expected goals against (xGA)42.26 (1st)

Above stats taken from Fbref and WhoScored

Only Barnsley conceded fewer goal attempts than Frank’s troops last season, although the Bees were only ranked joint-fifth for fewest shots on target allowed.

Indeed, Brentford’s goalkeepers had to make 67 saves from shots taken inside their own area in 2020/21; nine Championship teams allowed fewer than that.

In mitigation, the Bees had some injuries to contend with and had little strength in depth: first-choice centre-half Pontus Jansson (£4.5m) sat out half the season with fitness issues, midfielder anchor-cum-stopper Christian Norgaard (£5.0m) was absent for much of the campaign with an ankle problem and left-back Rico Henry (£4.5m) was unavailable for the final 15 games of the regular season.

And the west Londoners had been widely praised for their defensive efforts in 2019/20, with not even promoted Leeds United, Fulham or West Bromwich Albion conceding fewer attempts on goal.

The fact that they could boast a lower expected goals against (xGA) tally than the more heralded Watford backline in 2020/21 is also worth bearing in mind.

GOALKEEPERS

David Raya (£4.5m) is Brentford’s number one goalkeeper, having started 42 of the Bees’ 46 Championship matches last season and having been an ever-present in the campaign before that.

Comfortable with the ball at his feet, the Spaniard has long been linked with a move to Arsenal.

Raya attempted almost 300 more passes than any other Championship goalkeeper last season, with Frank’s fondness for playing out from the back something that could benefit him on the Bonus Points System (BPS).

With added responsibility for distribution comes the increased chance of mistakes, however, and only one Championship player made more errors than Raya last season. A howler against Huddersfield particularly stood out.

His save percentage of 74.2% was also lower than fellow promoted £4.5m goalkeepers Daniel Bachmann (76.1%) and Tim Krul (80%).

Barring further recruitment, rookie Patrik Gunnarsson (£4.0m) – who has made just one league appearance for Brentford and spent last season on loan in Denmark – is set to play understudy.

DEFENDERS: THE FULL-BACKS

Following the departure of Henrik Dalsgaard, Brentford are even shorter in the full-back department and will surely strengthen between now and Gameweek 1.

The right flank looks particularly weak, with Mads Roerslev (£4.5m) and the unpriced rookie Finley Stevens the only recognised defenders down that side.

After a stop-start campaign littered by injuries and benchings, Roerslev started the last nine regulation Championship matches and the three play-off games.

Operating initially at right-back in Frank’s 4-3-3, he enjoyed a stint further forward at wing-back upon the late-season switch to a 3-4-1-2 and set up a brace of goals in the 5-0 win over Preston in April.

For all Roerslev’s raw potential, it’s perhaps Rico Henry (£4.5m) on the opposite wing who is the pick of Brentford’s backline from an FPL point of view.

The pacy left-back created a respectable 25 chances in 30 appearances, which was more than any of the Bees’ defenders managed in 2020/21.

But even then, two assists across the whole of the campaign – exactly what he managed in an ever-present 2019/20 – and two goals in 110 Championship appearances doesn’t scream ‘the next Stuart Dallas’.

DEFENDERS: THE CENTRE-HALVES

Ethan Pinnock (£4.5m) and Pontus Jansson (£4.5m) were Frank’s go-to pairing at centre-half last season when fit, although where the injury-prone Jansson is concerned, that wasn’t all that often.

Pinnock, a threat at set plays, registered more goal attempts (30) than any other Brentford defender in 2020/21, with a minutes-per-chance average of 114.5 fairly decent without being overly eye-catching.

Harry Maguire’s (£5.5m) mean, for instance, was 84.7 in a superior division.

No Brentford defender could beat Pinnock for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI), either.

The centre-half have averaged a CBI every 13 minutes in 2020/21, a competitive tally when compared to the leading FPL defenders and again noteworthy when it comes to BPS.

Jansson was fond of goal or two at Leeds but has yet to open his Brentford account despite making 58 league appearances across two seasons.

Pinnock and Jansson both featured in the top 10 of Championship regulars for the BPS-boosting passes per game, meanwhile – although we’re perhaps clutching at straws and with the likes of Tariq Lamptey and Luke Ayling available at this price point, few managers will be taking the plunge on a Brentford centre-half.

Elsewhere, Charlie Goode (£4.0m) will play back-up unless a serious injury crisis hits.

Utility man Mads Sorensen (£4.5m) covered at both left-back and centre-half when unavailabilty struck last season but the arrival of a new face from Celtic seemingly pushes him further down the pecking order in the latter position.

NEW SIGNING – DIFFERENT FORMATION?

Brentford have now confirmed the signing of Kris Ajer from Celtic, a towering centre-half who has filled in at right-back on occasion at Parkhead and who has experience of playing in central midfield in his native Norway.

The move begs the question over whether Frank is to stick with his trusty 4-3-3 and replace one of Pinnock or Jansson with the newcomer or whether we are set to see more of the wing-back system that he turned to in late-2020/21.

The move to a 3-4-1-2 saw Brentford keep four clean sheets in their final six regulation-season Championship matches of the campaign and could also be significant regarding the appeal of Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m), who flitted between impact substitute and ‘out of position’ striker when the formation was last used.

Frank said of Ajer:

We wanted to get another central defender in, and Kris was our first choice. We think he fits the position specific profile perfectly, especially on the ball.

Kris is very composed and can find the right passes between the lines. His level when bringing the ball forward is very high. As a defender he has the physicality that you need, and he won his duels when he played in the Scottish league. He can help us in both boxes, with his strength in the air.

He is a player at a good age, and we think he come straight in and be ready to perform in the Premier League. But he also fits the way we want to recruit players and work with them. He can develop as a player and both Brentford FC and Kris can move to a higher level in the coming years.

What I like about Dallas is he's always nailed and will score some goals. ESR is good but I'm not sure he plays every match and I definitely want good bench coverage.

Its different which is great, just for me the money a little too spread around. If you like Leeds, which it seems you do, back Dallas and start him. Harrison to 4.5.

Im fine with a bench like that. At the start we all only have 100m, get the cash on the pitch. You end up losing a player you like to get say Cody who in all probability gets some 2's
Get the teams value up and then get a better 2nd sub imo

Like this set up and have been contemplating a very close variant of it

Not that bothered by the weaker front line and rationalising that it will be fairly straightforward to move onto a second power defender if need be.

      ESR nailed would be handy!

    Toney DCL* Watkins*
    4.0* White* Gilmour* 4.0def *
    1.5M ITB

Thoughts- * players (or priced players on the bench) think im set on
Buendia to Grealish if looks like playing (all the money)
    Wilson over Toney (0.5 left)
Sanchez to Henderson if looks like playing (1M left, might replace Shaw)
Forfana to Dias (all the money)
    Forana to Digne (0.5lrft)
I like all the cash on pitch to start with, happy with the prices of bench player, White could be Lampty if doesnt move, could also be Ayling or Cody

I'm surprised Nacho isn't everywhere - he's the obvious miss to me. He'll likely regress from last season but looks the pick of the mid-priced attackers to me.

DCL feels like a luxury pick and don't think his early fixtures stack up too well when you see Leeds Villa and Brighton away in the first five. They are three tough defences.

Agree on Grealish thought - he's oddly slightly off template on here.

It was Nacho or Watkins for me. Would like both ideally but they have Chelsea and City respectively in GW4. Watkins opening three edged it. I don't think it's a bad idea to wait and see how Leicester line up and how that plus the arrival of Daka could effect his minutes. Fixtures are pretty good from GW6 to 16 so could be one for the early wildcarders.

Going this way I'd get VVD not Robbo - history suggests that's where value is and I'd look at either ESR or Mbeumo over Sarr - that would give you Nacho (or your choice of 7.5) up top.

Nacho plus Mbeumo/ESR trumps Toney Sarr by a distance in my view.

Leeds and Villa seem to have a few good FPL options - it's strange how Arsenal, a team that finished above them in the league and is also not involved in Europe, generates little interest in comparison.

I think Arsenal are a team to really watch closely and possibly jump on once their tricky fixtures are out of the way and once we see how they are lining up. Tierney, ESR and Pepe are all on my watchlist for GW4

Also, Leeds and Villa teams are probably much easier to predict in terms of starting lineups. Arsenal have Auba, Laca, Martinelli, ESR, Saka, Pepe, maybe even the likes of AMN, Willian, Nketiah and Willock competing for the forward/attacking mid roles. Should get a better picture of Arteta's preferred lineup once transfer window closes and once they've a few games under their belt.

Did anyone have particular success last season switching between budget forwards for fixtures?

I didn't. My experience was that it was simply better to hold and wait rather than switch for fixture swings. Losing Bamford backfired. Holding Watkins worked. And despite all expectations iirc Nacho did score against Chelsea.

All these types are priced higher this time. Does that mean that they are going to perform differently? My guess is that they will do much the same this time. Scoring consistently but not always when you expect them to.

Wonder if the trap is that there are so many priced around the same point that you think you can mix and match. After a week or so they will of course be at different prices - 0.1 or so off so switches can't happen so easily and those switches may backfire.

I think in general, the importance of fixtures can tend to be slightly over-rated for attackers. Forwards often only need one chance in a game to score. A good example is Callum Robinson for West Brom who was the last player you would want in FPL but who scored loads of goals vs Chelsea.

Last year, there were probably only 2 teams I would have considered very tricky fixtures: Man City and Tuchel's Chelsea. But even the best teams are going to probably concede on average every 2nd match. There are a lot of decent, mid-table teams who can add score against anyone. The likes of Ings, DCL, Watkins, Bamford are going to get chances against 90% of other teams in PL.

I think form is a more important indicator. Forwards are often streaky and if they get their confidence, are more likely to keep scoring. Also works the other way if a striker is devoid of confidence, they might struggle to score against anybody.

Yeah I also fear that switching potential between firing forwards is just an illusion. Everyone went up in price but those are the similar players that were ~6.5 and I don't think I recall calling them amazing value.

I had some success moving them around on form - team form as well as individual form. But yeah I kept Bamford and Iheanacho for long periods of time in my team and didn't take them out.

What are a few common or even 'template' ideas that you have seen on here that you disagree with?

    For me:

    1) Nacho isn't nailed. Nacho was incredible in the 2nd part of last season, basically as soon as he got his chance to start a run of games. I just don't see how a new signing like Daka would relegate him to the bench. It would be really poor management imo if Rodgers was to drop Nacho for an unproven guy like Daka. I reckon it's more likely Vardy is at risk of reduced minutes at this stage.

    2) Double ups are too much. A lot of people saying Buendia and Watkins are both good options but that having both is too much. Similarly Robbo and TAA. But I don't really see the logic there - if you think a player and team will do well, then why not double up? It may not be a style for every manager but nothing wrong with it in my opinion, especially if you aren't adverse to hits or using an early WC if things aren't working out.

    1. Sheffield Wednesday
      • 3 Years
      2 years, 9 months ago

      iii) Fofana and Lamptey.
I want my 4.5M defenders to be nailed and not injury prone - their role for me is not to start but to provide bench cover. I don't want to waste a transfer because one isn't nailed (Fofana) and one is injury prone (Lamptey). Prefer to risk an injury prone forward if the upside seems worth it (Wilson/Antonio).

As a Leicester fan, if we sign a RW I'm almost certain Iheanacho will be dropped to the bench and Vardy will start in a 4-2-3-1, at least to begin the season.

Vardy will not play more than one game a week this season (so there will be plenty of opportunities for both Daka and Iheanacho), but I think he is still our first choice striker. Rodgers adores him, he has a fantastic finishing history with over 100 PL goals, and most importantly, was still playing very well at the end of last season, aside his poor finishing. Very good creative plays, excellent movement, and was still very pacy.

He is also a very important leader on the pitch, and his mental game is stronger than Iheanacho's.

Vardy has always been through some periods of poor finishing but he is mentally strong enough to get back to banging them in again. I find it unlikely that he has forgotten how to finish forever whilst retaining the rest of his toolbox - I expect him to start, at least to begin the season, and I expect him to do well.

This is an interesting one. I think it may depend on the rest of your squad to an extent. If you have 3 playing subs, then the likes of Lamptey become easier to carry. If Lamptey is your first sub and he is injured, you just call on a more nailed 2nd sub like Ayling or Bissouma.

If your bench is more fodderish, i.e. non-playing 3rd or even 2nd bench player, then Lamptey is probably not the ideal 1st sub.

How’s this for a first draft:

    Sanchez Foster
    TAA Shaw Fofana Lamptey Ayling
    Salah Fernandes Grealish Soucek Bissouma
    Watkins DCL Toney

    Thanks

It's pretty decent and solid. I'd say Soucek and Grealish are the more non-template picks.

Grealish @ 37% ownership is the 5th most owned player currently. Soucek has some differential potential.

Triple Brighton? They signed Scherpen as a backup keeper so Steele may not auto replace Sanchez (I have no idea as to the pecking order)

Everyone seems to know it's early, but if not now - when?! Amirite.
I dunno, 442 seems fine to start with as only 2 FTs away from any switch with one premium out. But then again there isn't much difference in Kane's 8 pointer and someone else's if you're not going to captain, so might as well spread the chance for more 8 pointers and not end up with Kiko in starting 11 in the process.

Pretty "template" core, but I'm not upset about that. Aside from that, some picks I like - Wilson, Maddison, Mahrez, Bamford... think I will end up with 1-2 of them. Also who knows what teams will look like by gw 7.

    A) Cavani, H.Barnes and + 1.0m

    B) Calvert-Lewin, Havertz

Assuming all 4 were basically nailed for the first 6 games.

A by a street for me

Aside from Kane is there a better finished in the PL than Cavani? It's not as if he'd be short of chances either. Sadly doubt we'll ever see more than intermittent Cavani - he'd be a premium otherwise,

Yeah, and having the extra mil looks fairly useful as well. I personally think he's nailed, especially with Rashford undergoing surgery early, and surely Martial's done for for in terms of a starting place.

Sounds expensive. Kane surely depends on if he gets his move, at city or utd would be in my side. If hes stuck at spurs could easily see him being a bit sulky and with a new manager too who knows how they will look, Nuno was soooo defensive at wolves.
