FPL team reveals: Why I’m picking Son, Salah, Bruno and double United defence

With just seven days to go until the 2021/22 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season kicks off, now seems like a good time to share my latest draft.

And it is very much a draft, and one which is evolving on a daily basis right now!

However, I don’t envisage too much changing between now and next week’s deadline, providing Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Romelu Lukaku don’t turn up at Manchester City and Chelsea that is.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

Thoughts on Pepe....why only 3.5% ownership? Currently have him as a differential

      He’s risky but could work
No fpl pedigree is prob why no one has him

Id go ESR until GW 4. Arsenal frontline although promising is still unproven so I wouldn't risk a 7.5 outlay when you can spend the same for Greenwood with good fixtures.

Hi all - GL this season!

Just made my first proper draft team and then read some of these RMTs and they look so much better haha. I’m carrying a bit of a bench though - still don’t trust COVID.

Other than that my plan is to pick the players that score the most points :). And probably get too many Everton players

I'm currently toying with this and going 3-5-2 for GW 1 and maybe 2

    Sanchez Foster
    TAA Shaw Ayling White Veltman
    Salah Bruno Raphina Buenida Jota
    Antonio Toney Obafemi

1.5 ITB so after GW1 I could downgrade Jota to 4.5 and Antonio to Kane or a range of other options in midfield or up top. Thoughts?

    Hey DZ,

Good luck with the season, sure we all have lots of drafts 🙂

Slowly settling down to this ... but will be shuffled around a bit after the 3 week fixture swing for a few clubs

    What do you think ?

    Sanchez
    White Veltman TAA
    Bruno Pepe Salah Gundogan
    DCL Antonio Toney
    Foster Coady Gilmour Ayling

    - KdB out so expect decent minutes for Gundo, if not Harvey Barnes will come in
    - Pepe up against a promoted team and will become Raphina when fixtures turn
    - Veltman & Ayling work in rotation
    - Coady nailed and will be used after fixtures turn and up against promoted teams

Good team. Not a fan of defense rotation as points are unpredictable. Still you have a very solid team. Agree on Gundo

Thanks, will not necessarily rotate those two defenders and will probably play them both quite often ... but sometimes you look at the fixtures for your 4.5 defenders and think ouch, wish I had a better choice this week

I'm not a good manager and Tom arguably one of the best but why I think his draft is bad? Lol..

Maybe I'm not a sheep to copy other's team.

Same to all of u right?

If we think Tom, LR or any of Pro Pundit's team is the best, so there will be no RMT again...

But all these draft keep coming until the last minute. Sure .. 😀

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years
      2 years, 8 months ago

None of the Pro Pundits' teams are the same, but they do mostly adhere to the template picks. There's nothing unusual in that. My own draft is similar but not the same as Tom's, but then I watched Zophar's pick on youtube last night and it's similar to that too. I've not seen a RMT that has exactly the same players as me, but most have a lot that are the same. That's pretty much how the game works.

I like Cavani to start as well. Even at his age his finishing is world class, and as mentioned above one game a week will be great for him early in the season.

I think I'm close to settled...

    Pickford (Foster)
    Robbo - Chilwell - Coufal (4.5 - 4.0)
    Salah - Bruno - Barnes - Buendia (4.5)
    Ings - Jiminez - Toney

Jiminez might become Antonio but I really like him as a differential to start with if fit.
Not sure if Pickford, Robbo, Chilwell, and Coufal is a bad choice over the template of Sanchez, TAA, Digne, Shaw...

Jimenez will come in for me when the fixtures swing for Wolves, before then Antonio, DCL, Ings/Watkins, even Wilson look a bit better for the first few games at that price

      1. squ1rrel
        • 10 Years
        2 years, 8 months ago

Wilson's injured, I'm not confident with triple Villa (already got Buendia and Ings)
Maybe I'll stretch 0.5 for DCL but otherwise I'll probably go with Antonio then

        1. Hotdogs for Tea
          • 8 Years

Yip, all good points .. Just noting that that Jimenez fixtures aren't great really but he is a good pick in a few weeks time and we will know how he and Wolves are settling down by then ... I will be bringing him in probably as part of a select and forget front three .... Until I change them 😉

I believe Pickford, chilwel and Coufal have zero pre season mins so far. Maybe / hopefully that’ll change today.
Barnes is a big risk from the get go and will prob be an impact sub for the first game based on Rogers’ comments.

Shaw was back in training this week tho.

    Current Draft :

    Bachmann
    TAA - Shaw - Veltman
    Salah - Jota - Greenwood - Mahrez - Bunedia
    Cavani - Antonio

    Foster - White - Ayling - Obafemi

I'm really leaning toward going without Bruno as I feel I won't captain him other then GW4. Prefer spreading the funds and just picking up some UTD players for the great fixtures. There are quite a few exciting but risky players in the draft. I think I have decent bench options to cover and I've left 2.0 ITB for leave room for price rises and being able to move some of the mid options to Son in a few weeks.

    Any thoughts much appreciated.

Mahrez on fire in pre-season games. Foden and KDB are out for a bit. Reckon he’ll start first couple GW’s.

Rashford out as we know and Solskjaer says Sancho unlikely to start against Leeds (prob a sub) and Cavani to come back next week he hopes he’ll be fit so is a risk - so for me Greenwood’s looked lively pre-season I think makes him a good first pick

      1. Pops15
        • 7 Years
        2 years, 8 months ago

That's my exact thoughts around those players. They have so much potential, especially in the beginning of the season when it seems like they could have some more guaranteed minutes vs later in the season. Always have the wildcard incase things go tits up. And lets be honest, I can't see many people holding the wildcard past the second international break with the big fixture swings we have with Chelsea and City. So its more like taking a punt on some exciting players early on rathe then picking the boring Bruno template squad.

    Manchester City midfield.

The top 3 in ownership - one is newly signed and not integrated yet, and the other 2 are out injured.
Mahrez, on a mere 6%, interests me, but I'd need to be sure he starts GW2.
Way down on 3% is Raz. What exactly has happened here? He's never mentioned in the RMTs or conversations here, and seems to have disappeared from media coverage.
Is he really so out of favour that he won't play? He seems obvious replacement for the injured Foden. What gives?

Raz hasn’t signed a new contract and I suspect the Grealish deal has him shuffling to the exit. Trouble is nobody can afford him so he’s kinda stuck. Still not back in training either. He’s absolutely one of the three of four that want to leave.

With the KDB and Foden injury news would it be silly to start with Mahrez and bank the change to then use to bring in Son in GW3? Not much to separate them in week 1, but would love to own Mahrez with an eye on GW2 against Norwich, but of course one price rise to Son or drop to Mahrez could ruin the plans or make me dash to use an early FT

Funny, I've tried every permutation of a viable 343 and I can't get one with all 4. Got to choose either Son or Mahrez, or possibly 'Upside Chase' their a55e5.

I think certainly one with Salah Bruno Son long term is the way to go, until we know what is happening with Kane anyways. Wouldn’t want to lose TAA from my defense to even try get the big 4 midfield but I believe you when you say it’s near impossible. But it’s that week 2 fixture against Norwich that keeps drawing me back to Mahrez, especially as I have no other city players

We're on the same hymn sheet. I could get a power 4 in mid if I sacrifice TAA, but nah - he IS a power mid! I'm nudging toward the security of Son's nailedness, but yeh, that GW2 match will be hard to overlook.

Son was absolutely in the wilderness against Chelsea. I worry for that team without Kane.

Son’s record without Kane is generally good too

5G 1A in his last 9 league games without Kane

He’d also have the FPL Holy Trinity of pens, DFK’s & OOP to add to his corner duties

Yep pretty decent plan. It’s 2 transfers away though so just roll after week 1 and there’ll be a way to get there without a hit.
Maybe another midfielder down to whichever low-price has started well.

I might be starting with 3x 7.5 mids, Mahrez and Salah so moving around should be nice and easy.

I like your plan, allows for flexibility as you’ve said. I normally hate starting a season planning transfers but not often the opportunity arises to be able to captain a city player whilst they’re relatively ‘short’ of rotation options

I figure I won’t get all of them right no matter how I guess and how much I plan. So 5 good-to-great options to start with gives me a good chance of returns and a good way to move around.

I like the plan, I'm thinking of starting with something similar to chase the potential of the early fixtures. Jota, Greenwood, Mahrez, Havertz all have so much upside early on. I don't mind booking in a few early moves as its very likely that most will be using the wildcard within the first 6-7 GWs during the second international break due to the fixture swings. I don't see the point in trying to set a team up for 6/7 GWs and not trying to make any exciting moves. But i guess playing it safe and boring usually results in a decent rank.

If Lukaku arrives absolutely not. If he doesn’t may be worth a punt.

Shouldn't he improve Ziyech as an option? Not like they play in the same spot. He was in excellent form last season before his injury

Still too risky to start with imo, never know who’ll start in their loaded attack unfortunately

I think he will start the season as he’s been playing well and Mount will be eased back in. If he carries on playing well be hard for him not to start

There is not much love for Brighton attack. How they perform during pre season? Wellbeck is injured, are they gonna sign another striker or Maupay will definitely lead the line?

They're negotiating with one from Celtic. But really, focus on the defence only.

If they sign someone maybe I’ll consider their new signing (should they make one) or even Trossard as he’ll have the chance to assist someone

Haven’t done much tinkering lately. Lots of listening to pods.

Think I’m enjoying this team. Obviously some risks but why not I guess.

    Sanchez, 4.0
    TAA Shaw Digne (Ayling White)
    Salah Mahrez Jota Greenwood Pepé
    Wilson Antonio (4.5)

    0.5 itb.

Sure maybe Jota or Greenwood don’t start but their fixtures are great and Ayling and White are good bench cover.

I expect to move one of those 7.5 mids down to Raphinha (or a 6.5 in general) soon into the season. Maybe the other one up to Grealish.

I'm thinking the exact same thing. Wanted Havertz for longer but with Lukaku on the horizon and Son's better fixtures it makes sense. I'm set up for this now anyway and could get to Lukaku with 2 more moves after that.

who knows, they dont have any attacking outlet left. might have to concentrate more on defense at start.

He's definitely a good option, can be great for baps and food assist potential especially if James is out of the picture. Although rumours that Everton have no strikers available now so I'd see if those are true today against MU first. I've had mixed results with him, I think I've had better returns from him on worse fixture runs than good ones which is a very Everton thing I suppose

Gonna be hard to avoid temptation to go early on Lukaku if the deal happens having scored on his last 4 league debuts (West Brom, Everton, 2 for Man Utd, Inter)

Fixtures are going to allow sitting back & observing until GW7 - away to Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs & home to Man City isn’t the best start

Palace is in 7 days time so they’re hardly going to have him starting GW1

        • 3 Years

Oh I agree, sticking with Havertz for GW1, wanted to keep longer term if no-one else signed but with fixtures and Lukaku on horizon I'll move him on to Son most likely after GW1 and see how Chelsea are shaping up

So… it’s actually not going to be hard to avoid the temptation to go early on Lukaku if the deal happens?

No it still will, but realistically it'll mean I'd need a hit or to have no other pressing concerns in the first 2-3 weeks which I don't expect will happen. Temptation doesn't mean you have to act on it.

Is anyone else going to start with Sancho and hope that he gets some minutes v Leeds, to be primed and ready in your team to play Southampton?

It could work out really well, because I doubt many will get him or even be able too.

Solskjaer said at best he'll come on off the bench against Leeds but yeah it's not a bad plan if you're planning on keeping him long-term IMO, otherwise you're just booking in at least 1 transfer before the season has started and something else may crop up
