We continue our more detailed Scout Notes of the Gameweek 2 action with a look at Arsenal v Chelsea.

ARSENAL 0-2 CHELSEA

  • Goals: Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m), Reece James (£5.5m)
  • Assists: James, Mason Mount (£7.5m)
  • Bonus: James x3, Lukaku x2, Edouard Mendy x1 (£6.0m)

Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) scored and put in a dominant display as Chelsea beat Arsenal 2-0 on Sunday.

The Belgian’s man-of-the-match performance earnt rave reviews, while Reece James (£5.5m) – who got the second goal – also impressed as a wing-back in Thomas Tuchel’s 3-4-2-1 formation.

LUKAKU OFF THE MARK

Lukaku took just 15 minutes to get off the mark with the opening goal, sweeping home James’ delivery, and was unlucky not to add a second after a superb save from Bernd Leno (£5.0m).

The 28-year-old bullied Arsenal’s defence all afternoon, as he gave Chelsea a focal point up top and the clinical finisher that they have missed.

As a result, he collected two bonus points to return an eight-point Fantasy Premier League (FPL) haul in Gameweek 2.

After just one appearance, Lukaku already features amongst the top forwards for goal attempts, having attempted eight against the Gunners alone:

“What a start for Lukaku. In the beginning he struggled to touch the ball a little bit. Then he was very well integrated. He proved his value for the squad already. He linked really well with Mason Mount and Kai Havertz up front and gave something to the game that we did not have already.” – Thomas Tuchel

Lukaku deservedly grabbed the headlines, but this was a dominant team performance where others impressed, too.

JAMES IMPRESSES

James’ 18-point FPL haul – via a goal, assist, clean sheet and maximum bonus – was the biggest of his career to date.

Overall, he registered 42 final-third touches, more than any other player on the pitch, four goal attempts and two shots in the box, while his advanced role (no. 24 below) stood out, too:

Chelsea’s average position map v Arsenal

It’s now two clean sheets in two matches for Chelsea, though most FPL managers will surely be content to wait until Gameweek 7 before investing, given that their next four fixtures are Liverpool (a), Aston Villa (h), Tottenham Hotspur (a) and Manchester City (h).

ISSUES AT ARSENAL

While Arsenal’s opening day defeat at newly-promoted Brentford was perhaps unexpected, it has to be said that this result was on the cards.

Despite improving after the break, the Gunners 4-2-3-1 set-up looked devoid of width and left too much space for the likes of James to exploit.

However, it’s worth noting that the squad has been hit by Covid and injuries in the opening two weeks.

After the match, Mikel Arteta said:

“I don’t think the club in their history have faced something like this. We have to face the challenge. The league or table is not decided in August. The worst thing you can do is throw in the towel. We certainly are not going to do that. You have to understand the situation we have. We are missing nine players, and it is difficult. It is not just nine players – they are some big, big players.”

Worringly, Kieran Tierney (£5.0m) also limped off after 66 minutes with his side losing.

“They had to limp off. KT had an issue with his quad and Gabi (Martinelli) was cramping.”

It doesn’t get any easier for Arsenal, as their next Premier League game sees them make the trip to reigning champions Manchester City, though their fixtures do improve from Gameweek 4 onwards.

Arsenal XI: Leno, Cedric, Holding, Mari, Tierney (Tavares 66), Lokonga, Xhaka, Smith Rowe, Saka (Aubameyang 61), Pepe, Martinelli (Balogun 79)

Chelsea XI: Mendy, Azpilicueta, Christensen, Rudiger, James, Jorginho, Kovacic (Kante 72), Alonso, Mount (Ziyech 82), Havertz (Werner 90), Lukaku

Fully agree with this, though last year I hit a TV of 110 earlier on by aggressively going after the sought after players with hits early on and it payed off with being able to fit in an extra big hitter towards end of the seaosn

This...in addition to that fact if you buy good assets they normally rise in price anyway so you don't need to chase every 0.1
Also feel this season TV will be a far less of an issue due to many potentially underpriced assets and cheap playing assets.

It depends a lot on big hitters performing, and the cheqpers one not.
If Salah Mane KdB Kane Lukaku are all in top form come second half of the season, and you can fit in one extra big hitter, it's definitely worth it.

But more often than not, Bamfords, Raphina's and Lingards emerge which does not make you gain a significant advantage just by being able to have 2-3million more

    Sanchez / Foster
    TAA / Coufal / Ayling / Tsimi / Veltman
    Salah / Bruno / Mahrez / Sarr / Brownhill
    Ings / Antonio / Toney

    2FT 0ITB.

    Suggestions please?
Plan was to get Son for Mahrez, but Mahrez (if he starts) against Arsenal on the right with Tierney being so attacking and leaving space is tempting me to keep him.
Son's record against Watford and Palace is great though!

I will stick with the Son transfer, Jesus looked really good playing right wing so Pep might just bench Mahrez again.

I've considered dropping Salah or Bruno but I would want them both for GW4.

I had planned DCL for Ings after GW3 but I would like to ship Toney.

Currently have 2 FT, should i be getting bruno in for -4 or wait till GW4 when they face Newcastle home?

    Martinez
    TAA Shaw Coufal Amartey
    Salah Greenwood Barnes Benrahma
    Ings Antonio

    Foster Jota Toney Kiko

Yes i know i have Jota on bench but me thinks Firmino will start in tough game against Chelsea and Amartey has decent chance of cs against Norwich

Wouldn't take a -4 for Bruno. Just wait.
Maybe Jota to Sarr if you are going to bench him anyway as he has great fixtures from GW4 onwards.

The No BS League - GW2 Update

The impressive Sri Lankan Legend continues to lead the way with a massive GW score of 111 and a GW rank of 513 (OR:41k)! Lukaku was his cappo and Shaw his lowest scorer with 4pts.

Jia You continues to chase in second with a decent score of 96 with Greenwood(C) and a benched Benramha which was unfortunate

Both TazzasSpuds in third, 88 with Son(C), & TulligPanthers in fourth, 87 with Lukaku(C) scored well and lead with main pack.

LessBruLessSalad follow on 77 (Son(C)) with The Sheep Hunter just behind on 64 (who wildcarded and had Jesus(C)).

BleesBlue!!! on 47 & ReservoirUnderogs 43, who captained Mane & Ings respectively, are still a bit off the pace in the 8 man field.

I'm just thinking with 2 free transfers for my team. Son and Brownhill to Grealish and Benrahma kinda makes sense. I know it seems perverse selling Son before Watford but you have to think of the greater good sometimes.

Also what's this I'm hearing about an injury?

Went off with some knock/niggle, will be assessed.

Who would you bench after doing those moves? Not sure what Grealish can achieve in upcoming weeks, fixtures are iffy and they are not going to score 5 goals every week.

            Benrahma Salah Bruno Grealish Raphinha
            Antonio(c)Ings

            Steele Tsimikas White Obafemi

City are very capable of thrashing Arsenal imo and Graelish could haul easily.

Sitting inside 5k atm. BB paid off well in week 1.
Need to do some serious restructuring though I think.

Where would you be making moves here?
Gundo-> Bissouma to free up cash is an option. Salah-> Fernandes (or even Son) is an another idea.

    Sanchez
    Pereira, TAA, Coufal.
    Salah, Benrahma, Greenwood, Barnes.

    What’s recommend here?

    Sanchez foster
    TAA Tsimi Shaw Coufal White
    Salah Bruno Gundo Benrahma Barnes
    Toney Antonio Obafemi

    2 ft 1.5m itb

Gundo out? White out? Would’ve got Raph in if not for IB

Norwich next. Only worry is Rodgers going 352 with Perez out and him dropping to the bench.

Benhrama & Antonio could prove to be the Mahrez & Vardy of 2015/16! Underpriced and continue to perform...here's to hoping!

    Is this worth it?

Wilson Barnes Veltman -> Antonio, Harrison/Sarr and Reguilon (-4)

      Antonio is a no brainer.
Harrison/Sarr and Reg moves do not really appeal though.

I need to replace Veltman to get a playing XI and Barnes is just not looking good (watched the game yesterday).

Which other defender do you like for 5M?

I don't have to but Veltman needs to be replaced for me to field an XI. As for Barnes, he just looks wasteful and almost playing as a wingback. Maybe it's just frustratiom and a fear of him dropping in price but I just want him gone.

Good move. Forgot to mention that I already have Benrahma and no FT left. So probably not a wise move to take -4 since it's Norwich and I could anyway ship him out for Raphinha or even Fornals next week.

I don't think it's worth it. Leicester are really struggling in defense. Ndidi being in poor form doesn't help either. Due to this, Barnes is having to play quite conservatively dropping to help in defense. I'd move on.

Cheers. I didn't have a chance to see him play yet due to time difference so this is valuable information.

I considered this but I made the switch to Benny as the form to good to ignore, they've got Palace next and better on going fixtures I think.

Any suggestions here. I am thinking Bruno to Son with 1 FT. And use the 2 mil the week after to make 1 of the 5.5 defenders TAA and double Liverpool defence. Stones losing .1 is annoying but I think I will stick with him for now.

    Raya

    VVD Shaw Stones Reguilon

    Salah Bruno Grealish Greenwood

    DCL Antonio

    Steele Ayling Bissouma Obafemi

Reasons? That haul he got he GW1 was not normal. Last year Son was close to him on overall points and comes in for 2 mil less.

Having said that I would not be as confident backing Son with the C as much as I would be with Bruno so it does reduce captain choice. Also Bruno would not be gone forever he can always come back in.

I'd only do it if you think Son can be a god captain option and/or if it facilitates something like Lukaku coming in.

Thanks. I see Son as a streaky player who I would never fully trust with the C so I will think further on this one. 2 FT over the break also appeals so maybe I should ignore the fact that Son will rise in price and I will be price out without a hit.

Couldn't hold onto WC any longer after doing quite bad this week, just activated. I know it's too knee Jerky and very possible that my old team can outscore the new one. Any suggestion?
    Sanchez Steele
    TAA James Janssen Duffy Livra
    Salah Pogba Greenwood Benrahma Gilmour
    DCL Lukaku Antonio

0.4 ITB to do Pogba to Grealish if needed.

      It’s a really nice 343
That defence could lead to problems but it’s probably worth risking it for now.
By the time the rest of us wait for the Chelsea fixture swing those owning them already may have stolen a march on us.

Funnily enough I was just creating a wild card team, tho not likely to implement it yet. Was experimenting with Kane in, and had a 343 of
      Sanchez Steele
      TAA Coufal Digne (Livramento, Williams)
      Grealish, Greenwood, Benrahma, Pogba (Allan)
      Kane, Lukaku Antonio
Would be a massive punt on not having Salah, Fernandes or KDB, but as a differential could be a killer!

The United defender 4.0 who has just gone to Norwich on a season long loan. Drawback is he takes up a Man U space, but will be absolutely nailed.

It's very nice but the defence could maybe stand adjustment.

Janssen seems a peculiar 4.5m choice, why not Williams and shave another 0.5m? Or Dier if you want someone at that price?

James won't play every game, take it from me. If you want a nearly guaranteed starter from Chelsea, take Rüdiger but I'd prefer Shaw to either. Might also be worth considering sacrificing TAA in order to have Rüdiger-VVD-Shaw as your 3 main defenders or even tweaking it to fit Dias in.

Apart from that it looks like a strong selection.

TAA is one of the reasons I have wildcarded, very exciting to watch, maybe will keep him for now as he is looking super sharp. Will change James to Rudiger maybe and thought Janssen more likely to get BAPS? Not really expecting much attacking return for a 4.5, just someone from a good defensive team, likely to have more CS. can always downgrade TAA to VVD and upgrade that 4.5 to Shaw.
Didn't chose Shaw as I don't think MU will keep many clean sheets and don't want to spend 5.5 for occasional assist potentials. As a 5.5 I would like someone like Alonso, if he is nailed ( both CS potential and attacking returns). I might be very wrong though.
