UCL Fantasy: What to expect from Wednesday’s matches and Tuesday’s review

Matchday 2 of UEFA Champions League Fantasy got underway on Tuesday but managers still have the opportunity to make changes to their teams, be it via the captaincy or by bringing in a substitute or two.

MAKE CHANGES TO YOUR UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FANTASY TEAM HERE

There are eight more games this evening, so it’s time to take a look at what we learned from last night’s fixtures – including a shock defeat for Real Madrid – and what to expect from tonight’s matches.

You can read our suggestions for Wednesday captaincy, differentials and teams to target/avoid in our first UCL Fantasy piece of the week.

WHAT WE LEARNED FROM LAST NIGHT’S FIXTURES

UCL Fantasy: What to expect from Wednesday's matches and Tuesday review 1
Inter Milan continue to struggle on Europe’s biggest stage

The reigning Serie A champions struggled in last season’s Champions League under Antonio Conte and these problems seem to be continuing into 2021/22 under Simone Inzaghi. They were passed off the pitch by a Shakhtar Donetsk side that lost 3-0 to Sheriff Tiraspol last time out; 34% possession and two shots on target isn’t good enough for a side of this quality and, as with last season, there’s a clear disparity between their domestic and European performances. Even with two games against Sheriff coming up, I’m not sure we can trust this Inter side to produce reliable Fantasy assets.

We have to stop calling Sheriff Tiraspol ‘the Moldovan minnows’

What odds could we have got on Sheriff winning their first two proper UCL games? Whilst averaging 24.5% possession over two fixtures doesn’t seem like a sustainable way to win matches, it seems to be working for Sheriff. Whilst their victory over Shakhtar was impressive, beating an in-form Real Madrid side at the Bernabeu was nothing short of shocking. We have to start considering their players as genuine Fantasy options ahead of a double-header against an underperforming Inter Milan outfit.

RB Leipzig still have a lot of work to do under Jesse Marsch

Winning 6-0 against Hertha Berlin at the weekend and then losing 2-1 to Club Brugge three days later is a perfect example of how inconsistent RB Leipzig have been under Jesse Marsch so far. Christopher Nkunku (€7.5m) notched a brace at the weekend and has scored all four of Leipzig’s 2021/22 UCL goals, but they look clueless at the back and poor going forward if Nkunku isn’t involved. Ahead of two games against a scarily impressive PSG side, RBL could find themselves out of knock-out contention very early on. Avoid ‘die Roten Bullen’ at all costs.

This might be PSG’s year

They didn’t have to be overly impressive in doing it, but by beating Manchester City, PSG have vanquished their conquerors from last season. Lionel Messi (€11.0m) is finally on the scoresheet in navy blue and this side really seems to be coming together under Mauricio Pochettino. Their 2-0 win proves that they can beat the big boys when needed.

Mohamed Salah is inevitable

Mohamed Salah (€10.5m) remains one of the most underappreciated talents in world football and one of the best Fantasy assets in any competition he plays in. Liverpool are looking as impressive as ever going forward under Jürgen Klopp and even with two games against Atletico Madrid coming up, Salah is still a great Fantasy option.

Dortmund aren’t the same side without Haaland

Three shots on target against Sporting Lisbon and none against Gladbach at the weekend shows just how important Erling Haaland (€11.0m) is to this Borussia Dortmund side. If he doesn’t play, their Fantasy assets simply aren’t as good.

What to expect on Wednesday night

UCL Fantasy: What to expect from Wednesday's matches and Tuesday review
Atalanta and Zenit to sweep aside opposition in the early kick-offs

These are two sides who are traditionally hard to beat in Europe and tonight’s two early kick-offs should be no different. Artem Dzyuba (€8.0m), Claudinho (€6.0m), Robin Gosens (€5.5m) and Duvan Zapata (€9.5m) are all primed for big performances.

Chelsea to return to winning ways

Juventus are in poor form and struggling with injuries, whereas Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea will be hurting after their weekend loss to Manchester City and keen to get back to winning ways as soon as possible. Expect a clinic from the European champions in Turin.

Manchester United to struggle against Villarreal once again

Poor recent results suggest that Manchester United are still in no position to get past the side who beat them in last season’s Europa League final. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has struggled tactically of late and there seems to be something missing from United’s displays. Don’t expect big performances from Cristiano Ronaldo (€11.0m), Bruno Fernandes (€10.5m) or their leaky defence.

Barcelona could suffer second UCL loss in a row

Benfica are top of the Liga Bwin and haven’t lost a game since May. They host a Barcelona side who are seriously struggling at the moment and Luuk de Jong (€7.5m) is expected to lead the line for Ronald Koeman’s men. Barcelona could finish tonight with no points from two UCL games.

Sevilla and Wolfsburg to play out low-scoring affair

Neither of these sides have averaged two goals a game in their respective leagues this season and have both built strong starts based off their defences. This is likely to be a tight game that could well end 0-0.

Bayern Munich to continue impressive run of form

Bayern have been terrifyingly good under Julian Nagelsmann and should continue that form this evening as Dynamo Kyiv visit the Allianz Arena. It’s a tough enough game to expect the Germans to field a strong line-up and, after Kyiv’s 3-0 loss to Shakhtar in midweek, Bayern could make an example of the Ukrainians.

Thoughts on Son punt on gw8 wildcard?

(new whu eve LEE bur BRE NOR bha lei)

Faces these 9 teams in next 10 gws.

He has 3 goals in 5 starts while playing city Chelsea arsenal and wolves in 4 of them

Sure spurs are not in form but with fixture i think Son will thrive. (Eg Look at Sarr)

Will you captain? Would rather have Saka or Raphinha for a lot cheaper.

Spurs look a proper mess right now.

I like it. We suffer from Recency bias. Son is a quality asset and will thrive against weaker teams. Spurs have been shite but will rediscover their form against weaker teams

Wouldn’t do it, ceiling for spurs atm is literally 1 goal, we are not free flowing at all, don’t see how it’s worth it when you can get the likes of Raph, zaha, sarr etc for less than 7m

I think he's a good punt. All points go through him for Spurs. If it's one goal everymatch, it's his goal

No WC and a few injuries. Strongly considering a -8… this worth it, or not?

Ronaldo, Bamford & Shaw > Lukaku, Aubameyang & Christensen

      Another option (also -8) is…

      TAA, Jota & Bamford > Alonso/Rudiger, Saka & Lukaku

Working out what to do with Jota. I will be selling him for a hit, the question is who for.

As context, this is my current midfield:
    Jota - Salah - Benhrama - Raph - Gilmour

Looking at Sarr or Saka at this point. Who else should I be considering at that sort of price point or less?
No intention to play wildcard soon, so looking for a solid medium term pick.

Suppose the other option is Smith-Rowe to keep funds unlocked.
Thoughts on how he stacks in comparison to Saka? No eye test to go on unfortunately, but the stats don't seem to justify an extra 0.9m.

Tempting as a Chelsea fan, but not just yet. Palace players tend to burn me and if hes not set on set pieces then its a non-starter. That being said, Maupay has burnt me a few times too, but look at the start to the season he has had. Arsenal players tend to do the same - hence the hesitation with Saka. But maybe this time will be different? *regrets transfer the second he makes it*

I don't trust him atm. His underlying stats during last two are extremely poor. I basically want more even from my defenders. Yes he braced in one match, but for example KWP made once hattie of assists and that was it. That faul that gave him fantasy assist was simply stupid imho. I have fallen to many traps, but at least we can see some warning signs now (that weren't visible earlier).

Definitely wouldn't fancy Ayling, even if he's fit Leeds look shocking at the back.

Mitchell maybe not a bad shout, he does have some attacking potential at least and Palace aren't looking too bad this season.

Chelsea DF would be logical with the next 5 fixtures.

Really not got a clue where to start this week. Team is in disarray! Only wildcarded 2 weeks ago!

    Sanchez Steele
    TAA* Shaw* James* Semedo Livramento
    Salah Jota* Sarr Gray Sissoko
    Lukaku Antonio Bamford*

    1 FT, 0.5m ITB

Probably going to keep TAA unless he's ruled out for more than one week.

Need a Chelsea def, anything else worth a hit?

    a) Shaw > Rudiger/Alonso
    b) James > Rudiger/Alonso
    c) Bamford > Jiminez
    d) Jota > Raphinha

    Meslier / 4.0
    TAA / Rüdiger / Livramento / Marçal / Omobamidele
    Salah / Jota / Torres / Raphinha / Benrahma
    Antonio / Ronaldo / Obafemi

You've got 3 non playing DFs this week (TAA, Tsimikas & Amartey) Possibly 4 if Shaw is ruled out.

Yes, I have a dilemma and hoping Shaw is a go. I need to sell something to fund at Christensen - I could trade TAA but I think all considered the Greenwood to Sarr, and Amartey to Chris makes sense. The icing would be Tsim in the line-up.

I know everybody says to never take a hit on DEF/GK, but hear me out on this one. It would be my first hit of the season. I'm considering doing Sanchez -> Ramsdale. I genuinely think Ramsdale is going to be the best value goalkeeper this season (possibly similar to Martinez last year). I have already used my wildcard so can't get him that way, and I have too many other issues in the next few weeks to use a free transfer on it. Obviously, it would suck if I made the transfer and Brighton beat Arsenal and keep a clean sheet, but Ramsdale still seems like the much better long term option. Thoughts?

If you’re convinced he’s the best long term option and don’t want to wait a week then go for it. The hit only needs to pay off in the next two weeks for it to be worth it

This is really interesting. You’re starting Gallagher and benching Livra (generally). Your 1.2ITB mean you could be starting a 6.7 mid in future.

Would you prefer to be starting Dias every week instead? Dias & Luiz instead of Livra & Gallagher, and it still leaves you with ESR as 12th man

    Thoughts on WC:

    Ramsdale
    TAA, Rudi, Cancelo, White, Livra
    Salah, Raph, Sarr, Doucoure,Sissoko
Lukaku, Ant, Bam (Jimi/St Max if out)

Cash for Sarr - Grealish GW8, leaving 0.3 ITB

      Reckon you’re good to go.
Double Arsenal defence though? Maybe try white to Duffy?

I think he'll leave white on the bench most of the time

Yeah that’s the concern. Bench fodder mostly, but I think Duffy might be a safer pick

    For one week only as I WC in GW8;

    A) Digne
    B) Duffy
    C) Chelsea defender -4 points

Considering I own Greenwood and have Ronaldo (c), it has to be B or C right?

Keeping. Bigger fires to put out. If he doesnt play City, Watford away Gw8 is a good enough fixture to keep

Reguilon to livramento. Sarrs good run about to end. Saka to ESR. Use the cash from those downgrades to get grealish instead of Sarr

Some good points. Livramento is already in the team. I've listed White twice... I could make Reguillon into Dier and then Saka to Benrahma. Then next week: Sarr to Saka. Not sure I want to put my money into that City midfield with the CL-run ahead

does it make more sense to take a -4:

    Sanchez | Steele
    Alonso | Cancelo | Shaw | White | Williams
    Salah | Fernandes (C) | Son | Benrahma | Sarr
    Antonio | Toney | Obafemi

    or wildcard:

    Sa | Foster
    Alonso | Rudiger | Cancelo | Tierney | Livramento
    Salah | Son | Sarr | Mbuemo | Luiz
    Lukaku (C) | Antonio | Toney

I like the wildcard. you are better off wildcarding next week though. IB - some more injuries might pop up.

This WC looks juicy! If Trent misses Watford I might pull the trigger

    Ramsdale
    Cancelo • Dias • Alonso • Rudiger
    Salah • Raph • Saka
    Lukaku • Vardy • Antonio
    (Foster / Livramento / Luiz / Brownhill)

Was planning to WCGW8. Best move here?

    A) Trent -> Alonso
    B) Barnes -> Raphina
    C) Trent/Barnes -> Alonso/Havertz (-4) and delay WC (just CR7 -> Lukaku next week)
    D) WC now

    Sanchez
    Trent*, Shaw, White
    Salah, Greenwood, Benrahma, Barnes
    CR7, Antonio, Jimenez

    Steele, Veltman, Brownhill, Tsimikas
    Bank 0.0m, 1FT

don't need to wc this week although shaw may be out.

would probably say a), as b) raphina will go missing in gw8 as he has a brazil fixture 3 days before.

Reposting for some inputs. Time for some surgery.

Would you do TAA + Jota + Perica out for Alonso + Antonio + Gallagher for a -12

    Sanchez
    TAA Cancelo Rudiger Marcal (Livramento)
    Salah Jota Sarr Gray (Mendy)
    Ronaldo Lukaku (Perica)

Gray and Gallagher will then rotate based on fixtures

Hate taking a -12 but hopefully Alonso and Antonio will give some of it back?

come up with some other ideas, doesn't need a -12. use your subs and find a cheaper way.

If only we all had a crystal ball. He shouldn't get rotated that much though - has been among their better players.

He should be pretty safe from rotation. Some say that Pepe might come on, but I don't think they play the same position.

    Lukaku Antonio St.Maximin
1.4m itb but I don't see where I can improve the team with that money. Could have picked TAA instead of Dias but not sure about TAA injury...

It is easy to do Rom to Ron, in case something happens to Rom. His fixtures are too good to pass.
Having both is not worth the sacrify of premium defense.

You may need money itb to get TAA back. I also have started to wonder whether to go without him on WC, but he has nice fixture after itb, so haven't decided yet. Whu double up is not for me. Antonio is injury prone and I don't want to have Benrahma without him. Itb is real worry with Antonio for me. One option is to have ESR over Luiz to handle knocks and rotation.
