FPL Gameweek 14 round-up: James injury latest and budget Dennis delivers again

Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from Wednesday’s Gameweek 14 fixtures, from injury news to stats analysis.

With the swift turnaround between Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadlines, the Scoreboard articles will take the place of the usual Scout Notes for this midweek round of action.

INJURIES AND BANS

It was a punishing night on the injury front; no coincidence, perhaps, with the games coming thick and fast and the risk of muscle problems increased as a consequence.

Aside from Kevin De Bruyne, whose absence was expected at Villa Park, three other Manchester City players didn’t even make the matchday squad. Ilkay Gundogan, John Stones and Kyle Walker all missed out with previously undeclared “niggles”, with Pep Guardiola unsure when speaking after the match whether that trio would be fit for Gameweek 15:

“Yesterday the doctor come and say this player cannot play and after another and this morning the doctor said Gundogan couldn’t play. Aymer [Laporte] was suspended but will be back. Kevin had just two training sessions but is coming back. It is important for us as many players as possible. They have to compete with these guys, they were exceptional.

“I don’t know [if they will face Watford]. Normally I’m not like this, they are not there, I would prefer it, absolutely.” – Pep Guardiola

Phil Foden was an unused substitute on his return from injury, while the newly fit-again Jack Grealish had a brief cameo off the bench on his own comeback.

Jorginho and Timo Werner were also fit enough for bench duty at Vicarage Road but Reece James didn’t make the trip. Thomas Tuchel may have been about to tell us that the right-back had a chance to face West Ham at the weekend but the Chelsea boss was annoyingly interrupted by the same reporter who posed him the initial question.

“I cannot say today, it was like yesterday, too much pain for him to travel for us and to play. Hopefully, we have a chance that he’s back on… [answer interrupted by another question on the nature of the injury]… he got a kick on the ankle” – Thomas Tuchel on Reece James’s chances of featuring in Gameweek 15

Chelsea also lost Trevoh Chalobah to a hamstring injury in the second half of the win over Watford.

“The next game is coming on Saturday and I am most worried about the injury to Trevoh. We got a lot of hits today. The doctor was on the field 20 times to treat players. It is a big loss with Trevoh and we have already some injured key players so I am a bit worried because the next game is Saturday at 12.30.” – Thomas Tuchel

The Hornets themselves saw Adam Masina limp off with a muscle problem that looks set to keep him out for a while.

“I think it’s serious because he was already operating these muscles. think I will miss him for a long time.” – Claudio Ranieri on Adam Masina

There weren’t many teams to emerge from Wednesday night unscathed.

Aston Villa lost Leon Bailey to a muscle issue that will very likely keep him out for weeks but the prognosis sounds positive on Matt Targett‘s head injury, at least.

“We’ll have to analyse [Bailey’s injury] with an MRI scan in the coming days but it looks like he’s going to miss at least a few weeks I think Matty will pull through, he’s had a bang but coming off the pitch he tells me that he should be OK. But you can’t take risks when it’s that area of the head.” – Steven Gerrard

Jan Bednarek and Salomon Rondon also picked up problems for Southampton and Everton respectively.

“He felt his hamstring so we need to wait to see what the physios are saying.” – Rafael Benitez on Salomon Rondon

“Hopefully he is okay. I hope that he stepped out just in time so that the problem did not become an injury.” – Bednarek

Marcal was absent from Wolves’ goalless draw with Burnley after testing positive for Covid-19, while the worst-hit side of the night were Brighton: they lost Adam Lallana, Jeremy Sarmiento and Adam Webster to muscle strains that left them down to 10 men in the closing stages of their draw with West Ham United.

“At the moment it doesn’t look like [they’ll be fit for] the weekend.” – Graham Potter on his injured trio

GAMEWEEK 14 TAKEAWAYS

DENNIS DELIVERS AGAIN

As Michail Antonio was delivering a fifth straight blank in West Ham’s draw with Brighton, Emmanuel Dennis was overtaking him in the FPL points chart.

The fixture and the 50% flag meant that he was benched by almost 90% of his owners in the top 10k but the Nigerian recovered to play 90 minutes at Vicarage Road, making it nine attacking returns in five appearances with a clean sheet-busting goal for the Hornets.

He now trails only Jamie Vardy for points among FPL forwards and from Gameweek 16-23, Watford move to the top of our Season Ticker.

It should be said that he is massively exceeding his expected goal involvement (xGI) this season (by 7.35!), while he has been named in Nigeria’s provisional squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in January, which could see him miss a handful of Gameweeks.

But with so few other forwards making a case for inclusion, the question does have to be asked as to why we wouldn’t simply recruit a bargain-bin Watford striker and splash the cash elsewhere, at least while the more expensive forward options are trying to play themselves into some sort of form.

TUCHEL ON ALONSO

It was a disappointing night all round for those going big at the back, with Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea all losing their clean sheets.

Marcos Alonso ‘assisted the assister’ for both of the Blues’ goals and a frustrating evening for owners was compounded when he was booked.

There were some quotes of note on the wing-back emerging from Thomas Tuchel after the game, when the hapless Saul Niguez was brought up as a topic of conversation.

“He was on a yellow card so we had two options – take Marcos [Alonso] off who also had a yellow card and try Saul as a wing-back. I had this in my mind before the game, if something happened to Marcos. I thought maybe it was not the right match to try things with new positions so it was him to change the shape a little bit and have Thiago on the pitch with his organising.” – Thomas Tuchel on Saul Niguez

TIME TO SELL WOLVES PLAYERS

Wolves drew a blank for the second match running and the last two Gameweeks have been a bit of a damp squib for owners of Raul Jimenez and Hwang Hee-chan, who would have hoped for greater things against two of the division’s weakest defences.

Bruno Lage’s troops now face some daunting-looking fixtures all the way through to the New Year, so Gameweek 15 looks to be a good hopping-off point.

 1

‘UNDROPPABLE’ BERNARDO

Bernardo Silva made it five attacking returns in seven Gameweeks with a goal in Manchester City’s win over Aston Villa.

With fitness concerns dogging Pep Guardiola’s squad, Bernardo has started 13 league matches in a row and is now City’s leading-scoring FPL midfielder.

With Grealish and Foden back to fitness, and De Bruyne and Gundogan not far away, the Portuguese may be due a breather soon – although it was only two weeks ago that he was deemed ‘undroppable’ by his manager.

“You cannot compete a long season without players. The moments Rodri and Bernardo play lately is too much. In six years, I never complain because the players are not here.

“I had 12 players today. If you think I complain because players are not here, it’s not going to happen. They have to recover quickly and compete against these guys who were so strong today.” – Pep Guardiola

EVERTON AND LEICESTER DEFENCES STILL ONES TO TARGET

Mohamed Salah continued his superlative form in the Merseyside derby, while Diogo Jota made it four goals in three matches in Liverpool’s ultimately comfortable 4-1 win over Everton.

The Toffees may not show up as dark shades of blue on our Season Ticker but they are a defence to target at present: 15 goals have flown in over their last six matches, with a league-worst total of 22 big chances conceded an unwanted record.

The same could be said for Leicester, who are still without a clean sheet since Gameweek 1.

In eight of their last 10 matches, the Foxes have conceded two or more goals – including in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Southampton.

To be fair, Mahrez has been setting UCL on fire but he's still benched for Jesus in EPL

Maybe Pep finally has his clear favourites?

We're about to find out anyway. He tends to change things quickly, so you could easily be right

Also, everybody will rotate now. The midweek UCL and Cup games that provided rests for his preferred EPL XI are now midweek EPL games instead, and they're all cycling knocks throughout the team too

Gündo is recovering from a knock, apparently

I think Bilva plays this one purely due to lack of alternatives, with maybe Zinch (AM) or Dinho (double pivot) in midfield again if KDB isn't fully fit yet

Thanks heaps for your reply. Foden trolled me hard man. Got him out for Jota last week and missed his hauls obviously lol Dont think i can go there again for now. Never been a fan of Bilva FPL wise but he seems to be on another level this season. Might be worth a risk.

Did you watch Foden play? Did you check his stats?

Stats and eye test are better predictors than past points, imo. They are better at accounting for the variance of deflections, great saves, marginal offsides, woodwork, etc

Did Foden play badly when fit?

          1. De Gea is GOAT
            • 7 Years

Theres playing really well in real life and theres FPL. Two different worlds man. Fodens quality dont get me wrong and hes probably having his best season yet but is he the best man city asset to get for FPL points? Im not so sure.

You're describing Bilva at the time you bought Foden

I mean shots, penalty box presence, disallowed goals, chances created. Stats and performances that predict FPL points

I don't mean dribbles and looking brilliant with the ball

Is Foden at false 9 a worse FPL asset than Bilva at AM? Because those are the likely future roles

Again, if Bilva is the false 9 instead or Foden is pushed out wide permanently, Bilva is clear to me

I moved a few weeks ago and would advise to do the same. Very busy period upcoming, has only played 1 midweek game before last night in the last 2 months (and he was taken off before 60mins in that), Moyes has been very careful to manage him this season and has kept him fit but this'll be a big test for him with how injury prone he is and he'll have to be rested a few times I'm sure

Thank you. Just not too many alternatives, but this will change I guess when DCL and Bamford come back. Watkins possible now.

I think Watkins looks like a great option. Had an eye on him earlier in the season where he was getting into good spaces but was a bit unlucky but Gerrard seems to be getting notes out of him. If I had a spare transfer and felt it was worthwhile losing Toney or ASM this week I'd love to bring him in as I think he could have a field day v Leicester but I'll likely have to wait a few weeks, if you can do it now I think it could pay off well

Apparently Dennis may not go to AFCON. Is on a list of backup strikers. Hasn't played for Nigerua for more than a year, just 3 caps, limited minutes. Iheanacho might go though. Dennis still a good pick in the interim.

Jimmy to Watkins I like, fixtures/form are there

I'm considering Watkins but Liverpool in gw16 is a little off putting. Dennis also an option.

Not sure about Antonio and Raphinha. Maybe I'd sell Raphinha due to the difficult fixtures but he is in better form than Antonio. But yes likely only making 1ft this week and again having 2ft for the week after.

It will involve selling Raphinha & one of Kane/Antonio.

Either Kane to a forward of your choice or Antonio to King/Dennis, or a 6-7m alternative.

Tuchel has to try something else out after last nights performance, Watford absolutely killed Chelseas left hand side from minute one. Will have to be Azpi/CHO/Pulisic lwb, none of which are ideal but can't be much worse

Did you see his performance or?? Watford targeted him every chance they got and he lost the ball countless times in dangerous areas, stood out in a game where no Chelsea player played well. He's lucky Saul dropped a 0/10, took the attention away from Alonso

I think he might get dropped specifically for West Ham, but I think in general he will improve with game time and yesterday there were so many payers that started that haven't played all that much lately so I think even though he wasn't good the whole Chelsea team was subpar.

I didn't watch the game no. I still believe he will start the majority of games and they will only try other options at left wing back to give him a rest. Tuchel has basically stated that this is the plan. He certainly wont be permanently dropped after one bad game particularly when they are short of other options in that position.

5 gameweeks ago I made a transfer that isn't normally in keeping with my usual way of playing. This player was 2% owned, had good underlying stats, did very well last season and had not been mentioned at all as an option on FPL twitter. That player was Ollie Watkins who funnily enough I never owned last season and was a bit of a tormentor. 3 returns of 7, 8 and 9 over those 5 gameweeks is very pleasing.

I would be quite happy for him to just keep ticking along with 7's and 8's every other week. Good consistent scores but not explosive enough to draw the attention of the masses.

Captained Kane over Salah.... didn't do Havertz to Jota 3 GWs ago because I felt Firmino would be back soon and Jota would be a transfer waiting to happen... classic overthinking and has absolutely derailed my season. Proper punch to the gut type of feeling! Was top 10k several weeks ago, now probably around 300k... ouch.

Kane may still deliver something but it's just far too risky and is overthinking. There is a reason why Kane has only delivered attacking returns in just one of the 10 matches he has started and when you compare this to what Salah has done!!

I would also add that having got your rank so high, there was just no need to take risks. Could understand it if you had a poor rank and felt you needed to try something different to the crowd in an attempt to make up some ground.

I have never been a fan of the captaincy rule and would prefer it if they didn't have it. The whole world captaining Salah every week is the next best thing so I don't have to worry about captain decisions and potential huge swings and rank drops should it go wrong.

Its boring to do the popular thing every week though, thats why I hate a good start. Forces you to be boring for more than half the season which I personally cant do.

you dont have to be boring. Just pick your battles. Going against Salah in the form he is in is not a battle you want to be taking on. 6-7 template players but with 2-3 differentials is about the right balance between remaining solid and also having a few players that can boost your rank. Watkins has been ticking along nicely for me and is very low owned and Silva also delivered for me last night. Both are not template boring players.

          1. Holmes
            • 10 Years

6-7 template plus 2-3 differential falls in boring zone for me.

Only captain Salah, dont go against Ramsdale/Trent/Cancelo/James/Jota. Thats 7 dead spots out of possible 12. Add Raphinha/Antonio to that and its pretty much a dead team.

Not a fan of this but cant do anything about it either. 4-5 template players should be more than enough.

I do get what you mean. It is quite uninspiring not really caring how many points a player scores because so many others have them. I also dislike this. However, some of the players you have mentioned ownership still isn't quite at the level were you don't gain anything from their points especially collectively. It's just finding the right balance.

Feels like a wee bit of a watershed moment for my team - and I'm sure many will feel the same.

I'd get rid of Antonio & Jiminez right now if there was a decent alternative, next week I'd be happy to lose Raph & Son. That's 4 players to get rid of and I only have 1FT right now (and 1 more next week).

Thinking to keep Antonio as his fixtures will turn soon at least. But I may do a -4 next week (Raph, Jimi & Son > Sancho, Jesus & Gallagher).

    Looking like decent moves?

Son hasn't done anything recently, see how he does tonight.

Raphinha is the best player in underperforming, results-wise, Leeds team with a few players like Ayling and Bamford to return. Unlikely but still can score against better opposition in the next few. Pool and Chelsea conceded in 3 of last 6 and City conceded in 4/6.

    Who would you bench here?

    Sanchez / Steele
    TAA / Cancelo / James* / Alonso / Livramento
    Salah / Jota / Raphinha / Gallagher / ESR
    Vardy / Antonio / Toney

    - Antonio vs. CHE. Poor form, tough defence. Bench?
    - Vardy vs. AVL. May need a rest and Villa look much better at the back?
    - Play Livramento? Bit risky maybe.
    - Toney... meh.
