Pro Pundits

Is Bernardo Silva really the best Man City midfield option in FPL?

It’s the business end of the season: this is where the wheat separates from the chaff and the title challengers really establish their credentials.

It was during this period last year that Manchester City asserted their dominance and the signs are that it will continue this time around.

The name on everyone’s lips is Bernardo Silva (£7.5m). He has notched five goals over the last six Gameweeks and now has over 20% ownership. This is already his best-ever campaign in terms of goals (seven), having notched just two last year and six the year before.

It is interesting to note that he has registered just two assists so far, an area he seemed to do better in previous years with 14 in the last two seasons.

Is it the case of a new role for the Portuguese or is it just a player bang in form? There is no doubt his footballing ability, but is he finally “Fantasy Friendly”? In this article, I delve into the Man. City numbers to see what’s going on.

First, let’s look at the last six Gameweeks:

Only three Man City players have played every minute of the last six league matches – Bernardo, Rodri (£5.5m) and Ederson (£6.0m). The first two have been left out of their Champions League game against Leipzig so that tells you all you need to know about Bernardo’s place in Pep’s pecking order at the minute. He is the most likely of all City midfielders to play minutes in the busy Christmas period, in my opinion. In fact, he has started every match since Gameweek 4. So in terms of expected minutes, Bernardo is your man.

Now let’s look at expected goal involvement (xGI) over the last six Gameweeks:

Ilkay Gundogan (£7.3m) leads the way amongst the midfielders for xGI (2.74) and shots in the box (10) with Bernardo close behind (2.31 & nine). Bernardo has played 203 minutes more, though, and if you look at the xG, Gundogan wins with 2.21 to Bernardo’s 1.72. So this would indicate that Bernardo’s average xG for each shot in the box is less than 0.20. So in terms of quality of chances, Gundogan perhaps has the edge. There can be no denying from these numbers that Bernardo has significantly overperformed his xG but his numbers are still good enough to indicate a good future output of points.

Phil Foden’s (£8.1m) xG is worryingly low, just 0.73. Limited minutes (313) are obviously a caveat but he’s played about the same number as Gundogan (337) and Sterling (369). His 1.32 expected assists (xA) is top though and if he gets moved to a central role with Jack Grealish (£7.6m) wider, then that would up his goal threat considerably too.

There has been some talk about how Guardiola has been using the wingers in more of a creative role to provide the width and seeing Raheem Sterling (£10.6m) top for chances created (13) would indicate that being true.

Now, let’s compare this with the six-Gameweek period prior to that (Gameweeks 4-9):

Help, Stuck with what to do here. Took a hit last week that didn't work well. Reluctant to do so unless its for Ronaldo.

    Sa
    TAA, Cancelo, James, Reguilion, Alonso
    Salah, Jota, Foden (Raphina, Allan)
    Antonio, King, (Wilson)

    A) Swap Sa to DDG?
    B) Alonso to Dalot or Telles?
    C) Alonso to Tierney or Arsenal defender
    D) Cry and leave it, trying to get in Ronaldo asap somehow, for Wilson or Antonio

Got the same back 5. I’m looking to lose Alonso too but after Leeds/Everton games. I’m dying up Davies or a Villa defender.

I’m playing Wilson this week but can drop him and Toney for 4.4 + Ronaldo. I have exact change to do it but waiting on spurs news/CL games.

So In short of you want Ronnie then Alonso and Wilson are not bad sacrifices. Wait till later though

You have a really solid team man. I wouldnt be rushing to trade Alonso for UTD defenders in particular. Sounds like his injury is just a knock.

Maybe roll this week and offload two for Ronnie next week if thats the way you want to go

Thanks, I do this every season. FOMO is a deadly thing in FPL. I get into the top 15-20k then end up taking hits that don't pan out. Perhaps be best just to leave it!

Reckon Sa will get potentially save points again Man City too.

If the names given are correct, and the subsequent PCR tests back up the results (already had one false alarm) then realistically that's 4 starters out as romero injured anyway (davies, lucas, son, emerson).

If that's enough to postpone then I guess leicester game is gone too.

Maybe I'm overthinking but I like Sterling tbh. This is for FanTeam and he's 9.4m in the game. Huge differential and he's been in great form.

Could this be the start of a new wave of COVID cases within the football world?

I don't own any spurs players but it really seems unfair from a fantasy league point of view that people could be punished just because they own players who have been hit by COVID, especially if you own more than one player from the teams affected.

Shouldnt there be a new rule to allow extra free transfers for players hit by COVID ? The world is adapting to COVID maybe fantasy football should too 🙂

This is really flawed thinking. You're thinking just about your own team and one or two instances of bad luck. Just human psyche being unable to rationalize and thinking only about the times they've been screwed over when there are also plenty of times when you benefit from it.

You can't control luck. Sometimes you'll be screwed over. Other times you'll luck out. But having DGWs and improved planning from a veteran will yield a bigger edge than if the season was more predictable.

That affects casuals and veterans alike. It's about how you take advantage of the opportunities and COVID + DGWs opens more chances to get an edge. Luck is the same for both but taking advantage of the swing is something veterans will get a lot more out of.

It's like a poker player complaining that they don't like playing against bad players because they're more unpredictable.

You lose this one time. But you'll make it up as long as you make superior decisions. Luck evens out. Maybe not in one game, maybe not in one month, maybe not even in one season, but if there are more COVID broken up seasons, you'll have more chances to benefit than to be screwed over.

One time, but much more detrimental for the first player in the example above. You dismissing it like its a minor issue in this example, First player may be as good as the 2nd player but will have their mid term plans ruined.

It does. You flip a fair coin infinite times, it will get closer and closer to 50/50.

There will be stretches where heads will win 30 times in a row but as you say, luck doesn't have a memory, it will even out long term.

But we don't get that benefit in FPL. There will be games where Dennis scores a hat-trick from 0.23 xG and games where Mbeumo hits the post 3 times with an xG of 2.7 but that's just how it goes.

Luck does not even out. An absolute myth. It is perfectly possible for a player to have a consistently strong run of good luck for seasons, as it is for one to have consistently bad luck.

How take advantage when they dish out a wildcard to everyone after a lockdown?
Also it doesn't affect everyone the same way. It solely depends on how many blank/double players you have.

Cant compare with poker at all. In poker you're not snatching someone's hand in the middle of the game and saying you have to play with different cards now.

You WC better than the other teams around you because you're a better FPL player.

That's not the analogy with poker. The analogy is that unpredictability and increased variance makes the better player less likely to succeed when the opposite is true. If you give a better player more tools and opportunities they will exploit a bigger edge.

Anyway whatever, people want to moan and don't want to be rational.

Yes, your own specific FPL team can be screwed over, but on average over the season, that will balance out and the blanks/DGWs open more opportunities to make big swings and gains.

Surely it cant be a coincidence that I didn't manage to get into Top 100k even once in the past two seasons but got 3 x Top 10k finishes consecutively before that. Also this season I've barely dropped out of the Top 100k. I know a better FPL should be able to plan better but what's the point of planning better if random blanks will just scupper all your plans.

Not even starting XV is always enough. But yes, this game has huge luck factor with similarly talented managers.

I think it very well could be coincidence and also the game is getting harder so the edges are smaller and having a worse OR by the end can be expected if luck doesn't go your way.

I acknowledge that I am no longer one of the best FPL managers around and that my past history of x4 top 10K finishes in the early 2010s doesn't mean much considering how many more informed managers there are today compared to before and that a top 100K finish today is quite respectable

We like to kid ourselves that because we had some good ranks back in the day we're more skilled or capable. But the truth is, the edges in FPL are getting really thin and we just have to do the best with what we're given 🙂

Your posts are usually spot on, but this is so far wrong. Covid factor is just pure random luck. Other than investing a little more in your bench, there is nothing you can do to counteract it. Nothing skilful about double gameweeks either.

It is luck in the short term.

But a veteran being able to plan more carefully will benefit more from DGWs and be able to bounce back better than a casual.

Basically if luck is the same for both, the veteran gets a bigger EV gain with a wider spread.

            1. Karan14

So I get 6 players for a Man City vs Arsenal DGW. Their games get called off and everyone who didn't get DGW players is already at an advantage. Then after that they shut the league for 4 months and everyone gets a wildcard.
How is the veteran able to plan more carefully around this?

If you take two equally skilled fpl players and one loses 5 players to covid and the other loses 1, how do you equate skill to the latter player if he does better at the end of the season

They don't. They are screwed over by luck.

But that's not the point. This isn't the case for 99% of players. There will obviously be that one super unlucky manager. But on average, you'll have a few missing, so will the rest, and it'll be about how you deal with it and how you adapt.

Again, always thinking about the worst case scenario. What if you're the one manager that somehow avoided all the postponements AND you're a super solid player. That could mean you get a top 100 season whereas before you'd be capped at top 10K. That little bit of luck can catapult a good player further because there are more opportunities to take advantage.

Yes, if you're unlucky, your solid FPL player on for a 10K season could become a 200K season but that's variance. Happens.

It increases skill edge and increases luck factor more, the latter of which has a chance of cancelling out the skill edge. With the increasing content levels for casuals, increasing their knowledge, knowing DGW permutations ahead of time isn't as useful as you imply.

As someone who owns no spurs players, I heartily disagree.

your right the world is adapting and its not our fault if certain footballers are misinformed about how they should protect themselves. the clubs are taking precautions but cant control what players do on their spare time.... ask yourself how many of the spurs players that have tested positive this week do you think have had the vaccine?

It is unfair, yes. I rank last season as my best, even though it's only my third best OR, as I was disproportionately affected by covid compared to the average. The problem with your suggestion though is that last season, loads of the games were postponed post deadline.

should the same logic apply if a game is snowed out or fans attack a bus and invade a stadium?

Exactly. There is luck and skill in the game. You need some luck but more skill to win FPL. When you have bad luck, you shouldn't ask for rule changes, that means you are taking it too seriously. Just accept you got bad luck but know that next time, you might be lucky. Also, if you're that worried about postponements, you can limit yourself to 2 players from each teams, but that's your risk management call.

Any idea who the 6 spurs players are who tested positive?

It’s making me very tempted to sell Son regardless

Its been posted so many times mate but here it is again, Not official but apparently the players who have tested positive for COVID at Spurs are Emerson Royal, Son Heung Min, Lucas Moura, Christian Romero, Bryan Gil, Ben Davies, Ryan Mason and a member of the coaching staff

Ryan mason isn't a player lol but yes that's the list I've seen too. It's been reported that Gil and royal missed the Norwich game due to covid, so it's possible they return earlier than the others.
