FPL Daily: Liverpool win Carabao Cup as Jota and James return

We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points of the day in FPL Daily.

LIVERPOOL WIN CARABAO CUP FINAL

In an entertaining clash at Wembley, Liverpool won a dramatic penalty shoot-out 11-10 after a goalless draw with Chelsea.

The headline news from an FPL perspective was the returns of Diogo Jota (£8.3m) and Reece James (£6.2m) from injury, who both appeared as second-half substitutes.

The latter is of particular interest in light of Chelsea’s potential double-header in Gameweek 28, which you can read more on here.

James is averaging 5.7 points per match this season, and a defensive double-up alongside Antonio Rudiger (£6.1m) is certainly appealing, given the lack of options further forward.

On the injury front, Hakim Ziyech (£7.3m) failed to make the squad for today’s match, along with Andreas Christensen (£4.6m) who has an issue with his achilles. Elsewhere, Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.6m) was forced off shortly before the hour mark with an injury, while Thiago (£5.3m) missed out for Liverpool after picking up a knock during the warm-up.

Chelsea XI: Mendy (Kepa 120), Chalobah, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, Azpilicueta (James 57), Kante, Kovacic (Jorginho 105), Alonso, Mount (Lukaku 74), Pulisic (Werner 74), Havertz

Liverpool XI: Kelleher, Alexander-Arnold, Matip (Konate 90), van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson (Elliot 79), Keita (Milner 80), Salah, Diaz (Origi 97), Mane (Jota 80)

BIELSA SACKED

The FPL Round-up: 8

Marcelo Bielsa has been sacked by Leeds United after a poor run of form that saw his side suffer several heavy defeats.

The Whites have taken just one point from their last six matches (see below) to leave them outside the relegation zone by only two points. During that time, they have conceded a whopping 21 goals and slumped to a 4-0 defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 27.

LEEDS UNITED’S LAST SIX MATCHES:
  • Leeds United 0-4 Tottenham Hotspur
  • Liverpool 6-0 Leeds United
  • Leeds United 2-4 Manchester United
  • Everton 3-0 Leeds United
  • Aston Villa 3-3 Leeds United
  • Leeds United 0-1 Newcastle United

At the time of writing, American coach Jesse Marsch is the bookies favourite to take over, with the club expected to announce their replacement as soon as Monday.

Notably, there is potential for their new manager to hit the ground running, given that they have an appealing run of forthcoming fixtures coming up, which includes a double-header against Leicester City and Aston Villa in Gameweek 28.

West Ham’s defence, Antonio’s creativity, Jimenez benched: FPL notes

There is still one match to go in Gameweek 27, with Burnley taking on Leicester City on Tuesday, but you can read up on all of the FPL action so far via the links below.

Aston Villa, Leeds United, Newcastle United, Southampton, Watford and Wolverhampton Wanderers all feature and double in Gameweek 28, with several differential options emerging over the weekend.

As someone that got burnt on Friday faces with exactly your dilemma, I’d go for Che Adams on the basis he has now delivered attacking returns in 4 consecutive matches. I went for Broja a) because he’s £1.4 million cheaper and b) because he’s been getting the hype

Would you wildcard this team? Cheers.
    DDG--Steer
    TAA-Robbo-Cancelo--Dawson--Livra

      I would not.

The core of the team is solid. I am assuming you bought those players hoping for long term returns and nothing has changed regarding TAA, Robertson, Cancelo, Dawson, Bowen, Ramsey, JWP, Kane, Dennis.

It is scary to play without Salah, so Bruno > Salah will already give you a decent team. You may want to sell Weghorst and Moura but a hit or 2 will solve that.

Thanks. I'm so torn right now. My team is not set up well for the DGWs and I am around 60 points behind my ML leader. But I still have an extra free hit and TC to use.

There are many ways to play FPL. If you believe you can gain some ground on your ML by playing the fixtures, then use your WC by all means, provided you have plans to navigate rest of the season; particularly the blank in GW30 and the probable double gameweek in 36.

What is the plan if playing wc this week? Forming a team for gw28 and 29 (and 30?! or playing FH then).
If we talk about BB it should be used in 29 or we can wait and try to set it up with transfers?

Anyone tempted by Vardy? He could be a great differential moving forward with Leeds next and Brentford in 30

Obviously assuming he’s fit and plays the Burnley game

I have Maddison at the moment, but will more than likely lose him as there are so, so many other DGW options.

I'm heavily considering a -8 for next week. -4 would be more than enough but I need to downgrade one of Pope or Ramsdale to afford a Chelsea def. Definitely leaning towards keeping Ramsdale, although one benefit of the move is I'd be bringing in Foster who doubles, although Ramsdale is still a good option as well. Other move is to move Olise to Elyounoussi or Armstrong who I want to have for a while as well as the DGW but looking at my team I'm a bit unsure where I can fit them in next week as I'm already looking at benching Cancelo and will then have to bench Tierney or Saka.

-12 BB in the works here too!! I think it just makes sense since it’s also setting up for GW30 as wolves, Leeds, villa and Southampton alll double and have a game for 30. Southampton imo will have a game for Gw30 cause I fancy west ham will get the win in the FA cup

Need your help to decide my transfer strategy for GW28, assuming Chelsea doubles, which has a very high probability of happening.

    Foster²
TAA | Robertson | Cancelo | Laporte | Ait Nouri²
    Salah (C) | Mahrez | Son
    Broja² | Dennis²
    (Ramsdale, Gallagher, Bowen, 4.4m)

    A. Gallagher > Willock² (bench Laporte)
    B. Ait Nouri² > Kilman² (a long term fix for my bench and ensure Wolves clean sheet points, if any)
    C. Gallagher + Laporte > Willock² + Rudiger² (-4, bench Dennis²)
    D. Save FT

Willock could be JWP / Raphinha in A and C. I bought Mahrez for his occasional explosive returns, and it is very hard to predict which game he will score; the strategy is to always play Mahrez. C looks strange because I really don't want to sell Laporte: he is fit and scoring more points than the rest of my squad in most gameweeks.

The double of Chelsea is yet to be confirmed.

The Premier League announced that the GW30 fixture between Norwich City and Chelsea will move to Thursday 10 March if either club progresses in the FA Cup fifth round this week. That is if either Chelsea defeats Luton Town or Norwich defeats Liverpool, there will be double for Chelsea.

So, almost virtually confirmed, unless Luton defeats Chelsea.

Thiago Silva is averaging more ppg and bonus than Rudiger. If you think Robbo sits one of the gw29 doubles then he could go instead of Laporte
B seems sideways and small upside
I like both Willock and JWP but trust the guy on set pieces just a bit more
I own Raph and not sure what to do with him!

      1. banskt
        • 10 Years

Thanks for your insights! Really helpful.

I will put my money on Robertson playing both the GW29 doubles, but who knows? if I have to sell one of my premium defenders, it has to be Laporte. I only hope that Rudiger will score more points than Laporte because of the extra (and easier?) fixtures.

B looks sideways, but the random benching of Ait Nouri is not ideal for my squad (since I have 3 players from Manchester City, and one 4.4m forward; so I want my 2 bench players to be always available when needed - read: Pep roulette).

Agree completely with JWP. Will look at the numbers before final selection; but this tilts it towards JWP. Raphinha benchings and Leeds turmoil is quite the reason to look away from him. Especially since there are so many options in that price range.

Also, thanks for the tip regarding Thiago Silva. I checked that he is playing week in, week out; but Chelsea is entering a very congested schedule. It is realistically not possible for Thiago to play in all of them because of fitness. On the other hand, he is getting more bonus points than Rudiger, hmm. Lots to think about.

yes see my posts on page 1, i'm looking at -12 BB but that doesn't include selling Raph (yet)
I see Robbo playing West Ham, Inter, Arsenal so Tsimikas could get FA cup and/or Brighton game - just something to think about.

Just as easily, Norwich for Chelsea smells of rotation as well with all their upcoming games 3 days apart!

Have WC, FH and BB remaining

    Is it better to
    a) Bring in Chelsea assets for their double/fixtures and use FH GW30
    b) Bring in Wolves/Leeds/Villa/(Southhampton) assets and save FH for 31+

    1. banskt
      • 10 Years

Difficult to predict which will give more points. But, my thinking is that Chelsea defenders + City and Liverpool trio will score more points than Wolves/Leeds/Villa over the next 5-6 gameweeks.

If that happens (which may not), then I will end up with more points than other teams loading up with Wolves/Leeds/Villa; while using FH in GW30.

Depends on how many players you already have for gw30.

I'd say if you are unlikely to have at least 7 in your team by 30, then you're better off going with A.

If you can manage to get a good team through 30, then I think it's better to save the wildcard and B is a better option.

If you're quite stocked on gw30 players already, then bringing in one Chelsea player for now and also building for gw30 could be the best way to go.

each team is different but I feel many can navigate GW30 without FH

If it's purely between these options, I think there are more nailed options with the likes of JWP/Willock/Ramsay/Coutinho etc than Chelsea assets who rotate more, cost more and don't exactly score that many. I'm considering one of Thiago Silva/Rudiger and that's about it. Can easily see rotation in that Norwich game 3 days between Burnley and Newcastle, followed by Lille

Have you thought of avoiding Chelsea mids? Unlike Manchester City and Liverpool, Chelsea don't score enough for those price tags and there's no talisman who is a magnet for all attacking returns. I guess there's more value in other teams (Son, Salah, City mids, Willock, JWP, Saka, etc.)

In case you really want a Chelsea mid, I would suggest Mount; but I would rather wait a few gameweeks before investing in Chelsea mids.

I mean, its impossible to predict what will happen in a game of football. But, Norwich is no longer the whipping boys as it were at the start of the season. So, the probability of that happening again is less than before. As of now, its the Leeds team who are letting in the goals. Hence, I think someone from Aston Villa (Coutinho?) or Leicester (Maddison? Tielemans?) has a very high probability to be among the points in GW28.

I have considered it and think that the likely outcome will be no Chelsea mids. Partly because I don’t know who to get an dorky because I don’t trust the team at all.

    Pick one on WC.

    A. Mount
    B. JWP
    C. Raphinha
    D. Coutinho

    FH in DGW 29.

    Thanks.

Mmm. Mount or JWP for me. Probs JWP for nailedness.

Which makes me rethink my own question above…

As FPL assets Mount and JWP are most tempting. But Raphinha and Coutinho have that GW 30 fixture. If Soton play in GW 30, then JWP is best I think.

Yep - really want that fixture (well h want WH to win anyway).

I’m leaning Willock for that spot maybe. Double double and gw30. Been doing well and last year he had a real run.
Will need to check stats a bit though to see how the expected is going.

I thought of Willock too. But since I'll be using FH in 29 I could just bring him in then. But if Newcastle have a fixture in GW 30 then I'll strongly consider him.

Newcastle only gets GW30 if Stoke beats Palace. Definitely possible but a long shot at best

I have no clue what kind of form they're in. But if too many teams start getting GW 30 fixtures I feel the ones who planned lose their advantage.
I'm only hoping for one more team to have a fixtures. Either Soton or Newcastle.

JWP or Coutinho depending on your plans for GW30. Mount may be rested, Raphinha in a free-falling Leeds team.

Is it worth moving Douglas Luiz to Ramsey as part of a -4?

Can't afford this as a standalone transfer and the other move will be Bowen to JWP/Willock.

Luiz is a perma sub for me even with dgw28. Only keeping him for gw30 but at least with Ramsey he's an option to play

I think yes. Ramsey should score more than Luiz over the rest of the season, and has higher probability for occasionally coming on for surprise points.

    Good morning 🙂

    (Un)usual DZ Update:

1 FT for GW28: Weghorst to Adams

    (Vi)Sá
    TAA Digne Aït-Nouri
    Salah (C)outinho Ramsey Son
    Adams Dennis Jiménez

    Foster Tierney Cancelo Bowen

4.7m ITB. BB left. Up from ≈ 300k OR all season to 165k, thanks to TC Salah and then a lucky FH

Got tempted by the -8: Reece + Mount for Cancelo + Bowen and BB, but I think I'll skip Chelsea until Reece for Digne in GW31. That should be my only change of defenders for a while, then a few keeper moves to prep for BB36 (Aït-Nouri to Digne then too)

Only midfield changes anytime soon should involve bringing in Saka (Ramsey) and then Maddison (Son). Bowen stays until Foden in GW34, hopefully. Vardy comes in with Madders in GW30, for Dennis (finally). Tempted by the -4 for Dennis to Vardy now, but it doesn't make sense, even if it works out

    Good luck, folks

      Nice FH so far.

Similar team (3 Liv, 2 Ars, Jimmy + Ait-Nouri), bur I only have one FH and did the unthinkable -12 hit because thought the template team was so strong and tried to challenge it. Down from 80k to 109k with only Weggy to go but looking forward to next gWs already

For those WCing this week. Are you targetting doublers and getting through GW30 with FH in tact? Or building a longer terms squad with better long term players and open to FHing in GW30? I'm struggling with which approach to take right now. Can see benefits to both options.

Not WCing. Maybe in 31 after dead ending my team in 30.

My team's a mess now so need to hit the WC button. Not a great week this week but the hit worked out well apart from Mahrez. Ramsdale (-), VVD (-), Salah (-) & Sissoko (3) -> Pope (3), KWP (9), Son (8) and Mahrez (1). Hopefully Pope will pick up a few more points but it's already paid for itself.

Here's my GW30 team, as things stand:

          Aït-Nouri Digne Tierney
          (C)Madders Coutinho Saka
          (V) Jiménez Vardy Adams

          Foster Salah TAA Cancelo Bowen

          3-3-3, -4 for Dennis + Son > Madders + Vardy

Your -12 bringing more points than mine, Salah Saka Bowen King > Son (c) Mahrez JWP Weghorst. It was supposed to be a golden affair, in the end it was a Foden affair lol. I even managed to bench Ramsey 3 points and Ait-Nouri no show really killed me, left me with Cancelo as only defender lol.

Pope will reward you no worries.

I don't like FH30 due to the likely limited options

It seems more about putting out an XI than getting a lot of points

I'll explain with this: the best assets on FH30 should be in your team long-term. The other assets will likely be fillers, and that's not good in SGWs. I'd prefer FH33... Or FH32 and skip the City vs Pool game, if you have two left

So, target 9 or 10 for GW30 and build your WC around that with some great assets elsewhere. Maybe get the Vardy + Madders double-up now. Their run continues all season. Maybe TAA Cancelo James Digne Kilman at the back

Yeah I tend to agree on FH 30 - really not much upside. Not using it just limits you a bit to a few teams if you plan just to play through though. Maybe just committing to 7 or 8 decent assets in GW 30 is fine. Anyway, we might still get lucky with the fixtures I guess. Let's see.

      - WC28 and plan for 29 and generally get a mixture that sees you thought 31 onwards
      - FH30 so that you can plan by ignoring it completely but still have the best team possible that week and score maybe 20 - 30 points more than everyone else (most will be on -4 or -8 any way)
