West Ham’s defence, Antonio’s creativity, Lage on rotation: FPL notes

We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from West Ham United v Wolverhampton Wanderers in our latest Scout Notes.

All stats taken from this article are from our Premium Members Area.

RESILIENT HAMMERS

After two draws in a row, West Ham came out on top against Wolves in Gameweek 27, with a narrow 1-0 victory that maintains their challenge for fourth place.

As a result, it’s now three clean sheets in their last seven league matches, all of which have arrived at the London Stadium.

However, with a trip to Anfield up next, followed by Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur, it’s unlikely their defenders will receive much attention, especially with so many other sides involved in Double Gameweeks, plus the fact their European campaign recommences next month.

Further forward, having scored today via Tomas Soucek (£5.7m), the Hammers have now found the back of the net in each of their 14 top-flight home games this season, while overall, only Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea have netted more.

CREATIVE ANTONIO

Michail Antonio (£7.6m) registered his eighth assist of the campaign against Wolves, more than any other forward in FPL.

Despite scoring just two goals since Gameweek 9, the Jamaican has turned creator on four occasions, and across the season, ranks first for chances created amongst forwards, with 39.

Above: forwards ranked by chances created 2021/22

However, that lack of goals has seen his ownership drop to just 7.35% in the top 10k, with his form, plus the fact West Ham aren’t involved in any doubles, the key reasons behind FPL managers looking elsewhere.

“He had his best 80 minutes for a while. Worked brilliantly for the team, got an assist, forced the keeper into a good save. I was pleased with him.” – David Moyes on Michail Antonio

Elsewhere, budget defender Ben Johnson (£3.9m) started at right-back, and was almost playing as a winger at times, as he regularly surged down the line into the final-third.

Above: Ben Johnson’s touch heatmap v Wolverhampton Wanderers

“I thought he did well, he has a lot to do and potential but he got forward and crossed it, had some good tackles too. He did a really good job, especially in the first-half. He made a good run for the free-kick as well. Ben has a lot of potential and we want him to keep improving.” – David Moyes on Ben Johnson

LAGE RINGS THE CHANGES

After playing on Thursday, while their opponents had a full week off to prepare, Bruno Lage made five changes to his starting XI for his teams’ trip to West Ham, with Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) amongst those who were benched.

However, without their Mexican forward leading the line, they struggled in the final-third, ending the match with just one shot on target and 0.95 expected goals (xG).

That suggests Jimenez will come back into the reckoning for Double Gameweek 28, which sees Wolves take on Crystal Palace and Watford at Molineux, followed by appealing fixtures against Everton, Leeds United, Aston Villa and Newcastle United.

“We played Thursday night and today we come here with a big energy. I don’t see any difference with that. I don’t give chances to anyone. I believe in all the squad and I chose the best 11 that I think could come here and win the game.

It was a good game, an emotional game, both teams tried to play with the ball, and that’s the main thing.

When you have a squad, you need to have this because here in the Premier League you only have two or three days to recover and every time you need fit players to be able to do a performance like we did today.” – Bruno Lage on making five changes

“After these two games, we can see we do not have a big distance between the top teams, but it’s about the little details, the experience in the little details, and for sure, we will have time to grow up.

I’m proud of the boys because they’re doing fantastic work and every time we need to improve, every time we need to continue doing the good things we are doing in the game, and now we move on.

The next three months we need to continue to play the way we play against these teams. The next game is at our home and with our pack and we need to produce another top performance.” – Bruno Lage on the areas to improve

West Ham United XI: Fabianski, Johnson, Dawson, Zouma, Cresswell, Soucek, Rice, Bowen, Lanzini, Fornals (Diop 90+3), Antonio (Vlasic 90+1)

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI: Sa, Kilman, Coady, Saiss, Hoever, Neves, Dendoncker, Marcal (Neto 76), Trincao (Podence 60), Hwang (Jimenez 81), Silva

How will Kepa come back from this? He's no longer first choice for awhile now, and he lost Chelsea the final

He lost Chelsea a final before by not going off. So he is used to it.

How did he lose Chelsea the final? There's 11 on a team, should be winning in 90 minutes.

He was brought on for the penalty shootout, didnt save a single one and missed the crucial spot kick

He didnt play 118 minutes so he has no influence on it but Its his fault he didnt do the job he was brought on to do. If a defender was subbed on and made a mistake that led to a goal, you would say its the defenders fault

You'd say it was down to all the team including Kepa. Don't think Tuchel went into the dressing room after the game telling them all that they did great, sure no problem ye didn't win in 90 minutes, it was all Kepa's fault that ye lost the game.

Been a while since I've seen a shootout with so many good penalties from one team, Liverpool scored some crackers including Caoimhin's delighted for him, seems a very cool character and he's looked very solid when he's played this season. I wonder if he'll want to leave at some point with Alisson ahead of him, I'm sure he'll have offers

Kepa is one of the best keepers in the league in saving penalties and has saved Chelsea several times this season, now people are saying ”Classic kepa” or ”why did Tüchel bring in Kepa”. This is why it’s mentally rough to be a keeper, no one remembers your good games

    1. GreennRed

Exactly right. Forwards win games, get the plaudits, their misses are soon forgotten. If a keeper slips up he's a fool in the eyes of those that know very little about football.

Just need a few people to take down Putin and his puppet masters. The vast majority of Russians despise him and the oligarchs. He's laughing at EU and sporting sanctions.

I agree but I don't really think could care a single bit what the English FA, FIFA or EU as a whole thinks. EU is acting like sanctions are going to cripple him and Russia but realistically it's going to have little impact and won't pull his forces out of Ukraine, but that's a different discussion and one that needn't take place here

Of course he dosent care but since using direct force is not an option to support Ukraine, world should do whatever can be done to apply pressure on Russia.

Make Russia a pariah on a world stage in all ways of life and force their people (who I believe don't want this aggresion) to overturn Putin from within or atleast force him to stop.

I strongly disagree. Putin cares about sports and a lot. Anyone who for example saw his face after Russian lost in ice hockey to Finland in Sotshi knows this. In Roma there was saying about bread and circus pleasures to keep people happy. Shutting Russia out of international sports would be much bigger blow to Putin than most people realise.

Just because he was disappointed that his country lost at a tournament does not mean he'll pull out of an invasion and disarm his nation because UEFA / FIFA will tell Russia that they can't compete at the Euros or WC (even though they won't). I'm sure he enjoys sport and wants to see Russia win trophies, I'm also sure he wouldn't hand back Crimea and Ukraine (if he succeeds in this war) just because a few football federations declare they won't face Russia.

El Polako, it's not real pressure. It's being seen to be doing something rather than doing something. Plenty of banks, property developers, businesses have turned a blind eye to the oligarchs money outside of Europe, in many cases profiting from it. They should launch a few Stuxnet attacks, cripple Russian networks, see how they like it.

FIFA and UEFA are still very blaze about whole thing (money of course)...

All I'm saying that if any body can do something to hurt Russia or atleast make a stand then ot should be done.

Every little helps and it's better than doing nothing or pretending that nothing happens.

            Children are dying ffs...

I know that's a direct quote, but The FA have since corrected it to read "Out of solidarity with Ukraine...". The 'the' is a prefix Russia likes to add to infer Ukraine is a region of Russia.

Southampton home form is excellent. West Ham face a tough test. Spurs lost away to Burnley and have been Jeckyl and Hyde. Stuggle against teams that sit in.. strong on counter. Will see.

Is Coutinho a must for you? The stats is not that appealing. I opted for cheaper AVL mid: Ramsey. Not sure Buendia is back fit again.

How does this look for a -12 to BB? Bench would be: Ramsdale - White - Saka - Cancelo

    Bruno + Bowen + Edouard + Idah --> Raphinha + JWP + Jimenez + Broja/Adams

All 4 new players would have a double and would play in GW30 (if Southampton gets a win against West Ham). Also tempted by Maddison against Leeds this week and GW30 against Brentford. Ignoring Chelsea is the only thing that I think this move is missing, but defense is too settled

Haha good advice. I've checked a few videos out but they pretty much all assume that at this point you've triple captained Salah and used a FH/WC.

Gw36 is not a great dgw. Liverpool, both Manchester clubs, west ham have no games pending. Arsenal pending games are against tough opponents.
Just chelsea may have a good dgw36 of the good teams.

This, and how many points different that would be even if the DGW36 supposed to be 'big'. The implication of waiting for that long could cost more points - imho.

He doesn't need sympathy. He's a resilient chap. Has had a few lows in his career. He'll get over it. Everyone's an expert/keyboard warrior with hindsight. If his teammates had stepped up they could have won in 90 minutes. They're not blameless either. Caoimhín didn't save a penalty either. Took his nicely, deserves the plaudits. But a keeper misses a penalty, not a striker or regular penalty taker. The goalkeeper. Plays for Chelsea football club, not with a keyboard.
