FPL new signings: Who is Nottingham Forest forward Taiwo Awoniyi?

It’s a big summer for newly-promoted Nottingham Forest and the early arrival of Taiwo Awoniyi for a club-record fee shows they aren’t messing around.

The 24-year-old forward has joined from Union Berlin for a fee believed to be around £17m. It’s a statement signing for the two-time European champions and many curious eyes will be on the former Liverpool man.

“I feel great. I feel very happy to be here. Looking at the project, it’s something I’m really looking forward to. What stood out about Forest were the meetings with the Head Coach and the discussions we had. I can see how ambitious and dedicated he is to his job.

Every striker wants to score goals, but I’m ready to work for the team, to fight for every ball, to win every challenge, that’s my style and that’s what I’m here for.” – Taiwo Awoniyi

So, where does the Nigeria international fit in at Forest and what impact will he have in Fantasy Premier League (FPL)?

We’ll attempt to answer those questions below.

Awoniyi was spotted as a child by former Stoke City and Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Seyi Olofinjana. Playing at a London football competition, the young talent was subsequently invited to join Olofinjana’s Imperial Soccer Academy.

After five years there, Liverpool signed Awoniyi and immediately sent the 18-year-old to FSV Frankfurt – the first of seven loans.

Consecutive relegations were suffered both here and at Dutch side NEC, so the next two campaigns saw him dispatched to Belgium. Despite having a bad time at Gent, it was sandwiched by two productive spells at Mouscron.

Parent club Liverpool chose to step up his progress by assigning him to top-flight German action. One Bundesliga goal arrived at Mainz before Awoniyi suffered a concussion injury against Augsburg. The forward believes he is lucky to be alive, as doctors confirmed he lost consciousness whilst falling and seemed set to land on his head. Luckily, Awoniyi’s feet hit the ground first.

His final loan spell took place at Union Berlin, impressing the club hierarchy enough to secure him permanently for £6.5m.

Last season was his best for goal scoring, ending on 15 from 31 league appearances. He netted in each of the first three games, then once in the Berlin derby versus Hertha and two on the final day that secured fifth spot and a place in next season’s Europa League.

Elsewhere, Awoniyi was an under-17 World Cup winner with Nigeria in 2013 and made his senior debut last October against the Central African Republic.

PLAYING STYLE

According to WhoScored, Awoniyi is superb at dribbling and finishing, which makes him a great option for counter-attacks.

Despite youth coaches being initially impressed by his physical features, the forward has settled at 6ft tall and isn’t particularly strong at aerial duels.

“One of the things we noticed about him was his height, he was really tall for his age. His mental attitude also stood out. Taiwo played like his life depended on it. He had that never-say-die attitude and he was working really hard, so we thought, ‘why not?!'” – Imperial Soccer Academy chief Atiba Bankole

The official Bundesliga site has just profiled Awoniyi for interested observers, where they compare his explosiveness and poacher’s instinct to fellow Liverpool striker Divock Origi.

WHERE AWONIYI FITS IN AT NOTTINGHAM FOREST

The successful rise of Union Berlin is due to Urs Fischer’s wing-back system, with three centre-backs, three central midfielders and two up-front.

This is similar to the formation used by Steve Cooper, which helped transform Forest from a team with just one point after seven matches into a Premier League outfit.

Although several vital players have now returned to their parent clubs – Djed Spence, James Garner, Philip Zinckernagel and Keinan Davis – Cooper is expected to stick with this successful system, meaning Awoniyi will arrive into a familiar set-up.

His intelligence is visible both on and off the pitch, having revealed that he has a Diploma in Business Administration and Marketing Management and is currently studying for a Bachelor’s degree.

IS AWONIYI WORTH BUYING IN FPL?

Our Members Area allows managers to sort the Season Ticker by difficulty. Over the opening eight Gameweeks, Nottingham Forest are deemed to have the eighth-best fixture run.

Of course, a lot of their appeal depends on how well they can replace Spence and Garner alongside the general strengthening needed for play-off winners.

Awoniyi should be their first-choice forward and, if given a generous FPL price tag, could be worth exploring between Gameweeks 6 and 12, a run highlighted in our recent ‘The non-‘big six’ clubs with the best early fixtures in 2022/23‘ article.

Awoniyi will be hard to predict this year. He was great at Union Berlin in the first half of last season and is at this best when running at opponents on the break. He needs a strike partner though, and the departure of Max Kruse mid-season really affected his productivity for Union in 2022. After that, Awoniyi's touches in the box fell by 12% and his goals per 90 minutes fell by 19%.

If Forest create a system that plays to his strengths, then he'll be fine. Otherwise Awoniyi may spend a lot of time doing things that are good for the team, such as tracking back and running in the channels, but don't translate into FPL points.

Should link up nicely the way forest play with Johnson collecting ball quickly on counter attacks can see a successful partnership forming throughout the season.
      Fingers crossed

Yes. "The Sheriff of Nottingham was historically the office responsible for enforcing law and order in Nottingham and bringing criminals to justice. For years the post has been directly appointed by the Lord Mayor of Nottingham and in modern times, with the existence of the police force, the position is entirely ceremonial and sustained to boost tourism due to the legendary connection with the fictional Sheriff of Nottingham in the tales of Robin Hood." Apparently, ManU have reached an agreement with Barcelona on transfer of Frenkie De Jong (and I assume the player himself has begrudgingly come to terms with what’s inevitable).

Should be a very good loan acquisition for Everton come January, then, will probably help them avoid the drop.

Trying not to get too excited before it's official but it would be a great signing.

€65m (~£56m) for one of the best CMs in the world, without even offering Champion's League, would be quite a coup.

Don't think his role will be to get far forwards. De Jong didn't play as well as an 8 at Barca, he says he prefers a deeper role progressing the ball from defence.

“I like to be the first player to receive the ball from the defenders. […] In the national team I play differently compared to Barça. And I think this one fits me better.”

          Ten Hag agrees: https://www.teamtalk.com/news/frenkie-de-jong-playing-in-wrong-position-says-ajax-boss

So if he's going to play a deeper Jorginho-like role, then I think he needs someone like a Kante alongside. Not a sitting 6, but an energetic box-to-box player who can win the ball back... like Fred.

I see that you're one of the few around that recognises what Fred can bring to that side if utilised correctly and I agree that this could do wonders for him and ManUtd. There's a reason why he's a mainstay in that Brazil side, but playing as a DM and alongside players like McTominay and Matic was always going to be a disaster for Fred.

I’m trying to use the fixture difficulty tracker down the right hand side of the page but there’s no option to ‘sort’ the fixtures in order of easier to more difficult. Is there a reason why? I thought annual membership fees came out of our bank accounts automatically annually?

Had same one since I joined FPL. Originally, there was no character limit, so the full name made sense - 'Glue-Sniffing Gangster Monkeys'. Now it's just 'Gangster Moneys'. Mind you, the police rounded them up and shot them for upsetting tourists, so it doesn't make sense all over again. That was before they became snowflakes. Tourists I mean, not the dead monkeys. This country used to be proper Wild West when I came.

I agree 6.0m is too much at first, even at 5.5 is probably too much to buy at the start of the season but this is really the price for October onwards when everything has settled. I may get Brennan Johnson (also likely to be 6.0m) and will probably get Dean Henderson (likely 4.5m) as part of a rotation with Reya as Forest's system encourages opposition snap shots but shuts down quick breaks pretty well by pushing out to the wings. All a good thing for a keeper and save points.

Why are so many people assuming FPL will price TAA at 8-8.5m? This would not be consistent with previous seasons scores and apparant pricing criteria.

Both TAA and also Robertson have exceeded TAA's 21/22 points total in previous seasons but neither has ever been more than 7.5 the next season.

It seems that the zeitgeist is that the wider community has now cottoned on to the fact that the best "defenders" are much better choices than similarly priced midfields and off the chart better compared to forwards. Yes, a certain amount of rotation in a 3-5-2 formation (for example) means cheaper defenders' value is boosted as you just don't play them in harder games but the true premium defenders (Cancelo, Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, James when fit) should all be 7.5m or more and probably 8.0m to 8.5m for Alexander-Arnold.

Think about it this way, if priced appropriately, most "popular" players should have an ownership of 5-30%. 50% or more indicates that they're underpriced.

If you had Alexander-Arnold at 8.5m, Cancelo at 8.0m and Robertson and James at 7.5m then I wouldn't be including more than two and possibly only one of them in my team and I like managers being forced to make tough decisions.

I fully agree that players like TAA and Robertson who are regularly hitting close to or above the 200pt mark should be priced higher than 7.5m. The prices are disproportionate. Every year these defenders are either matching or getting only 30pts or so less than premium 12-13m priced premiums but still FPL price them 5-6m less again the next season. It makes no sense to me.

But what Im saying is that FPL would have to completely change their pricing structure and criteria they have used in previous seasons if they are going to price these attacking defenders at 8-8.5m+. Since we cant assume they will do that as they havent previously and nobody knows what their pricing plans are, we can only go on previous pricing criteria. So therefore there is no justification to believe or predict that TAA will be any more than 7.5 again as this is what he has been in previous seasons after scoring similar points totals the year before.

If you look 9+ years ago (Vidic, Baines, etc.) then there were defenders that were 8.0+ but prices have gradually dropped until 1-2 years ago when they started to rise again. FPL Towers are willing to change their pricing structure but do so slowly so as not to be too reactionary. That's why if TAA was 7.5m last season and has (almost) sustained his output then I would be shocked if he didn't rise to 8.0m or 8.5m. If he rises to that then all of the other premium defenders need to follow but the mid-tier defenders (e.g. Kyle Walker, Harry Maguire, Eric Dier, Kieran Trippier, etc.) shouldn't really be increasing too much either as you still want for there to be a genuine choice between expensive or semi-budget.

I agree with you, I think all the 8.5 talk is nonsense. As you said he's scored more points before and still been 7.5 the next season. I could potentially see him going to 8 but no higher.

Brentford also start well - which pair would you choose to cover those teams?

Could be other great 4.5 options though once it released.

I'm sure City know what they're doing but they're being rumoured with a lot of exits aren't they? Jesus, Sterling, Bernardo, Gundo (still?), Ake and Zinchenko all going will leave them quite light. Plus Fernandinho already gone and i've heard Steffan was looking for a move. Would be good for their FFP I guess.

This isn't a response to your comment per se, more just my surprise that they're willing to listen to so many offers. I reckon they'll need at least one more defender and another mid in, if everyone goes.

Honestly when the season ended I expected a fair few outgoings but not as many as are rumoured. I expected Sterling, Jesus and Mahrez would all be unhappy with their minutes this season, Mahrez probably the least as he still does seem the go-to for the CL which is a big compliment. Grealish will be incorporated more now, Foden is already able to play in about 3 positions and even Alvarez can play RW if needed. Gundogan leaving also made sense, but Bernardo was a big surprise. I understand the club being willing to listen to offers because he asked and what he's done for them, but he was exceptional last season and would be a massive miss. I think if Bernardo goes then Gundogan stays and vice-versa. I guess they have had too many options up top given the versatility Pep demands. I still expect to see games where Pep benches Haaland and plays with a false 9 and if you take that on board then realistically across the front 3 positions they'd still have Grealish, Foden, Haaland, Alvarez, Mahrez, KDB who can play there, as well as the expectation that Palmer will begin to get minutes this season too.

Yep, all very true. It seems as though Sterling has been getting phased out over a couple of seasons tbf, and Jesus was doomed with Alvarez and Haaland arriving. You're right that they probably won't let both Gundo and Bernardo go, so that leaves a shuffle of their sub GK option, and a couple of back-up defenders leaving. I guess Cucarella covers Zinchenko, plus maybe a youth CB gets promoted.

May as well cash in on some of these guys on the periphery when they get the chance to.

Have to say I don't hate it, nice to see something different for a change. No Spurs could be an issue but it's not like I can say the team looks weaker because of it. Are you that convinced by Liverpool defensively? Conceded only 26 goals last season but xGc was 34, face some potentially tricky ties against Palace, ManUtd and Newcastle early on. Not saying I'd be massively surprised if they keep clean sheets in those games but also wouldn't be incredibly surprised if they don't get any. Henderson is getting on a bit considering the work his role requires and they haven't signed anyone to replace Wijnaldum who did incredibly important work in covering the defence. I may be wrong but I feel like things may catch up to them a bit this season and defensive triple-ups can go wrong for the smallest of reasons.

Articles Written (last 30 days) now shows my last five Community Articles, from 15th May to 2nd June 2022, but it still says 0 comments for each, although there were comments on all of them.
This is a big improvement on the previous version, which only listed my articles from 2014-2016.

All comments (last 30 days) still only shows my last 20 comments, the most recent of which was only 7 days, 3 hours ago.
But they do now link correctly to the actual comment rather than to the article.

Sometimes my squad is quite close to the template and sometimes it isn't. How different do you have to be to be considered a Maverick rather than a Dullard, and is there anything in between, such as Mostly Dullard or Fairly Maverick? I would probably describe my own Playing Style as Flexible or Variable.
Playing Style could perhaps have a write-in option - or should we just put that in our Bio we aren't satisfied with the available options?

It is good that the Bio box is now big enough to show the full entry instead of only showing one line at a time.
And good that it no longer says email addresses will be displayed on site.

This probably goes into unpopular opinion category but...I still think having a good bench with at least 2 starting players is important, even with 5 subs rule. Of course 1pt cameos are gonna be more often, but we also tend to forget some things:

    - injuries (post-deadline or not) happen very often, which our bench player can cover easily if he has good fixture, having in mind that injured players often don't even make the squad (unless you're Fraser or Son)
    - complete rests of players after a tough stretch of games (Robbo, Trent) also bring forward the need of our bench. Even if mentioned players Robbo and Trent make the matchday squad, I can barely remember If they ever were brought in for a cameo
    - complete ommision from the matchday squad due to misc issues (bust up with manager, family things..)

    Just some food for thought

I usually maintain a fairly strong bench. On balance, it mostly doesn't work to my advantage. In all my drafts, money is super-tight and I'm pretty sure I'm going for one of my weakest benches in recent years.

I like 1 good sub, probably a 4.5m defender, so that I'm not necessarily forced into band-aid transfers to cover a short-term injury/knock/suspension. 2nd sub used so rarely that I don't mind a 1pt-er there

    3. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 3 Years

Generally I like to have a decent-enough bench. Naturally the last few seasons instilled the need for a strong bench at all times so we should be able to relax a bit with it now but I agree that there's no harm in putting an extra 0.5-1.5 into it if you don't feel it weakens your first XI options.

Should be kept in mind that with the winter WC, teams in Europe will have a midweek game every week from the last week in August until November (most being CL games, with a PL game in there in October along with an international break). It might not match the heights of Project Restart but it will be an intense period of over 2 months with a lot of football crammed in.

last year i had 256 benched points, but i only gained a measly 26 pts from autosubs, so i'm not going to worry about my subs too much this year, a couple of 2pt merchants will do, at least with them i'll be happy if they ever haul even if the points are stuck on my bench as i can console myself with the fact i was never going to play them anyway, as opposed to having a stronger bench and benching a haul in a 50/50 call which i did too many times last season 🙁

Four reasons why I won't be bothered about a strong bench this season.
      1) Bench boost card might be getting binned.
      2) 5 sub rule makes it much less likely to have an autosub.
      3) Covid won't have a massive impact anymore.
      4) As Lugs said - having benched points it really frustrating.

Stop confirming deals that aren’t near to completion

Are they the only 2 people in the world who can confirm deals? You dont know who i am or what my source is either.

Where have i said my sources are more reliable than those 2? Isnt it possible that other people can pick up information first and that it be picked up by more well known journalists afterwards?

You’re full of it I reckon. Pick a couple of deals that will likely happen, then when (if) they do, claim to be itk. Seen it many times.

            This is just for Jay:

"And now Spanish publication Nacional claim that Ronaldo is ‘not resigned’ to staying at Old Trafford despite claims there have been ‘no firm offers to leave’ Man Utd this summer.

Ronaldo is ‘not happy or satisfied with the project’ at Man Utd with the club currently struggling to get their first transfer of the summer over the line, despite reports they have now agreed a fee for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.

            The report adds:

‘As much as they have promised him changes in the transfer policy and in the planning of the squad, there is nothing that can convince the Portuguese star to stay.

‘He wants to leave England, a country to which his family has also not adapted as expected, and leave Old Trafford. Because he doesn’t want to waste the last years of his career playing in a team that doesn’t aspire to titles.’"

Make of it what you will 🙂

Its early news, I kept the source private, it will be done. I wanted to talk about the impact of the moves, but again i wont share information where I keep the source private on here from now.

Theres insights over everything ofc, but do you not grasp the concept that there are ITKs? Or journalists that can find something before Fabrizio does? Dont believe me without the source, but its not like im claiming to know everything either, just that these 2 deals will be done

I'm saying I've read these 'news' items a dozen times already - they're not new. The sources aren't especially reliable and without stating yours, there's no reason for anyone here to believe yours are either.

I do however follow Romano on Twitter and Ornstein of The Athletic on YouTube. When I post transfer news I give the source I got it from. It's simply proper etiquette. Claiming some special 'itk' without giving evidence invites ridicule, which is what you got.

Gentleman! When it was announced ‘not until July’ it felt like an entire age would need to pass before the game would be launched

Well, today is the 28th, that’s right - we could be tinkering with our teams this time next week!!!!

I'd say 7 or 7.5 is right for Raphina. Id pay 7. I'd say 8 is too much. One of my favourite players to watch though, outside of FPL, just too much of a team player for FPL.
