FPL 2022/23: Can Dias or Laporte cover Cancelo?

Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) has been handed a significant price rise in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ahead of 2022/23 and is now the joint second-most-expensive FPL defender.

The price hike was inevitable after his fine 2021/22 in which he banked 12 attacking returns, 19 clean sheets and 201 points.

However, while the Portuguese now costs £7.0m, team-mates Ruben Dias (£6.0m) and Aymeric Laporte (£6.0m) are available for a million less.

There’ll be many Fantasy managers, then, who will seriously consider the cheaper centre-halves as Man City defensive coverage from Gameweek 1 onwards.

With that in mind, we will run a comparison of the three City defenders in this Premium Members article.

CANCELO V DIAS V LAPORTE: FPL RETURNS 2021/22

PlayerPointsPoints per matchAppearancesGoalsAssistsClean sheetsBonus points
Cancelo2015.6361111927
Dias1414.929 (2)251412
Laporte1604.83342188

Cancelo finished second among FPL defenders for points after cracking the 200-point mark in 2021/22.

His total of 11 assists was identical to Andrew Robertson’s (£7.0m) and only one short of what Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) managed, while the Reds’ right-back was the only defender to better Cancelo’s total of 27 bonus points.

Reliability of starts was another plus point in a side otherwise riddled by rotation: he made Pep Guardiola’s line-up in 36 of the 37 matchday squads he was available for.

Laporte was pretty much as ‘nailed’ as Cancelo, suffering only two benchings in the whole of 2021/22 – and the first of those was because he had spent time in self-isolation and missed training.

The Spaniard chipped in with four goals and two assists to supplement his 18 clean sheets.

Dias, meanwhile, had his involvement curtailed towards the end of the season after an unfortunate hamstring injury.

However, he still managed two goals, an eye-catching five assists and 14 clean sheets, averaging 4.9 points per match.

CANCELO V DIAS V LAPORTE: GOAL THREAT

PlayerMins per penalty box touchMins per shotMins per shot in the boxMins per big chanceMins per shot on target
Cancelo29.939.8104.1806.8140.3
Dias70.9133.8160.6602.3803
Laporte64.480.988.5404.6404.6

Cancelo attempted a remarkable 81 shots last season, more than any other Man City player including Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m), but only scored once.

One of those efforts hit the woodwork, but his expected goals (xG) map (see below) pinpoints exactly why he struggled to find the net more often, with only 38% of his goal attempts arriving inside the opponent’s penalty box.

In fact, despite taking 81 efforts, the Portuguese averaged just 0.06 xG per shot, so his odds of scoring any individual attempt is six per cent.

Despite taking 46 fewer shots overall, Laporte actually racked up one more attempt in the box (32, see below) than Cancelo, whilst also registering three additional big chances.

It’s also worth noting that the majority of the Spaniard’s goal threat stemmed from set-pieces. In fact, among all FPL defenders, only Liverpool duo Joel Matip (£6.0m) and Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) registered more attempts from dead-ball situations than Laporte in 2021/22, something which should be factored in given De Bruyne’s ability from corners and free-kicks.

Dias, meanwhile, was behind in all of the above metrics, but getting on the end of a set-piece can sometimes be a bit of a lottery and in 2020/21, he actually trumped Laporte for goal threat.

    Who’s gonna get the points?

    A) Mendy / Bruno G
    B) Raya / Rashford

I’ve got Son, Salah, Neto in mid.

Am I right in assuming IF Newcastle don't sign a no.10, Bruno could carry with the form of last season? If they do though, e.g. Paqueta, he'd be pretty dead as an option and go back to playing the position he did for Lyon?

Why do you want Brazilian? I thought it was only the BBC that had those sort of quotas.

I'm brazilian, never done a starting 11 before. This year is about as good an opportunity as I'll get, especially if Richarlison nails down a starting place, the 11 could be a legit high level team!

To be fair, the wing backs are not going to get 200 plus points in the first few games. Not starting with them is different to ignoring them and it doesn’t mean they won’t own them. Also, we do have an additional wildcard as such.

As a Spurs fan, Romero is definitely the better defender but Dier is still one of Contes most used/trusted players in the middle of the three. I’d say both are similarly nailed unless we sign a right-footed centre back.

      TAA / Cancelo / Perisic / Williams / Tomiyasu
      Salah / Son / Bailey / Dasilva / Andreas
      Haaland / Jesus / Greenwood

I'd look at swapping Vestegaard out with Phillips when he moves, think he's going to Bournemouth but could be wrong.

Is Mitrovic being overlooked as a good fantasy asset this season? His last venture into the Premier League wasn't great, but he was injured in that season and was eventually kept out of the team while Fulham struggled. I've always felt that he's a player with goals in him, which he demonstrated in the Championship (in spades) last season. I realise that you can't use Championship form to dictate performance in the PL, but he seems to be getting more overlooked than you'd expect at a price of 6.5M.

    10% ownership @6.5M vs. 55% ownership for Jesus @8.0M

I've been talking myself in and out of the guy and decided against it when Pereira went to Fulham. I (mistakenly) think of my 11th slot in my playing roster each week as being a matchups spot shared among three players who get to play.

Right now, my rotation trio is Neco, Andreas, and Che Adams. I might be leaning too heavily on the tools here on the site, but the flexibility that I picked up going from Mitro to Adams was worth the tiniest downgrade in points the projections say I'll take over the full season (something like four points in total).

May readjust once I see the projections updated for Andreas and Neco, but for now that's where I'm at and why.

BTW, I'm a big believer in Jesus now that it appears he's a nailed on starter.

    TAA - Dias - Chilwell - Tomiyasu

    Salah - Diaz - Mahrez - Martinelli

    Haaland - Havertz

The Dias Diaz double-up is quite nice.

        I'd prefer Laporte over Dias.

More for looks than anything else I mean. Laporte seems to be the better fpl option when it comes to goal threat.

Isn’t Laporte the left-footed centre back and Dias/Stones both right-footed, or am I misremembering?

Not sure but Dias + Stones had a really good partnership going when Laporte was injured, they have played a lot together

That was when Laporte was injured 20-21

Since then, Stones has fallen out of favour and Pep prefers the right sided Dias to be partnered with the left sided Laporte. Laporte's the more nailed

Laporte more nailed than Dias? He's more nailed than Stones yeah.

And then Laporte came back and stayed in the team the rest of the season.

I have no doubt Laporte + Dias is 1st choice pairing, just saying that Dias + Stones can play well together so there could be some rotation

Assuming he gets in to the team he moves to. Seems to be a general assumption that squad players of the big 6 walk in to other teams. Most of the time they end up struggling.

1, maybe downgrading Grealish to get another playing forward in case Jesus is rotated/injured at short notice.

Starting to like that Neco- Andreas rotation:

    4.5

TAA- Cancelo- Tripper - Gabriel (Neco)

Salah - Saka - Neto (Andreas)

    Haaland - Kane

    Fodders

Has anyone found any other playing fodders so far, or is it just Neco and Andreas?

I expect Colback to play but as a DM and he'll have more cards than Moonpig so I'd avoid.

As below if DaSilva steps up to the Erikson role could be gold.

Neco and Andreas stand out so far though.

Still very early in terms of enabling transfer to create (or kill) budget gems.

Funny to see what no premiums can get you. Obviously massively impractical with the money you’d have on the bench every week, but still…
    Raya - Ederson
    TAA - Cancelo - Chilwell - Cash - Tomiyasu
    Kulu - Mount - Diaz - Bowen - Andreas
    Jesus - Watkins - Wilson

  30. FPL_trail_runner

I played around with a simple FPL one premium draft this evening with the idea of minimum planning ahead and reducing decisions since the top teams have great fixtures up to pretty much week 8

    Simple rules barring injuries

    1. Team is built to last until a week 9 WC
    2. 0.5Mil in the bank incase of price changes only used to move around the Premium position
(Mostly Kane and Haaland) to get this :
    SOU / BOU/ WOL / nfo/ NFO / FUL
then perhaps Salah etc later in week 7

    3. Essentially its robertson + the upgraded backline + Mount + Saka competing against Salah / Neto / Perisic template

With Kane (C) for nice fixtures should compete against Haaland when Haaland has tough fixtures
    e.g West ham new CRY

I reckon this has a decent chance of being top 100k by WC week 9 which would be excellent going

    4. By week 9 can WC and target the fixture swing and the then known bargains

    5. No wasted transfers trying to catch bargains or last weeks points with transfers only for captain changes.

    Ramsdale
    TAA Robert Cancelo James Chilwel
    Mount Saka Diaz
    Jesus Kane(C)*

    4mil, Andreas, Forshaw, 4.5

    *Week 1/3-4/6
    Haaland Week 2/5

It has the feel of one of those dead teams that would do well

    Thoughts?

Yeah the alternative strategy to back against Haaland and Salah early on is risky but worth considering

      1. FPL_trail_runner
        • 3 Years
        1 year, 9 months ago

        I am warming to it

I would have 3 Liverpool to hopefully cover a Salah if he doesnt go crazy

and of course having Haaland when he will be the major captain

What sways me is i feel Kane in week 1 and 3 is as viable a captain as Salah.

I feel the above draft will tick along nicely if i just ignore the noise and stick to the plan

I'm definitely on the Salah & Haaland train atm over Kane/Son but certainly it's 2 from 3 I think. Having 3 Pool isn't covering no Salah though imo - most are Salah, TAA +1 of Alisson/Robbo/Diaz.

That said there is certainly logic to the idea that Diaz probably "covers" Salah better than anyone affordable (Klu?) covers Kane/Son.

I don't like preplanning transfers especially those that will likely cost you value I'd say is my biggest reservation
