Compete for real prizes in the free-to-play Sorare Academy this weekend

Sponsored by Sorare

Welcome back to another weekend of MLS regular season action. We are in the middle of the summer window and have already witnessed the debuts of Chiellini, Bale, Cucho Hernandez and Hector Herrera – with more to come.

Don’t forget that you can enter a team for free every week in the Sorare Academy and be in with a chance of winning a Limited card.

The deadline this week, as ever, is on Friday at 11am BST.

Guest writer Frip talks us through the fixtures for this coming weekend. You can find him on Twitter posting regular MLS injury, transfer and other news here.

LAST GAMEWEEK

15 more managers secured a Limited card prize last week. Our number one manager was Jessejreyes with this unusual team – a full Real Salt Lake Stack:

THIS GAMEWEEK

This weekend doesn’t have many obvious home-run matchups which makes for a lot of potentially interesting picks. Let’s get into some of those games below:

Inter Miami CF at NYCFC

Taty Castellanos is about to play his farewell game for NYCFC this weekend. He has become a club legend, scoring 50 goals and 19 assists in 108 matches. Targeting the Miami defense has been a solid strategy all year and this week is no different. Phil Neville’s men have not had a clean sheet since May and with Phil hyping up the midweek Barcelona friendly as the “biggest match in club history”, it’s easy to build a narrative against them this weekend.

Santiago Rodriguez would be the go-to midfielder to pair Castellanos, however, he picked up his fifth yellow card last weekend and is suspended for this one. Maxi Moralez is always a threat and just had a free kick off the crossbar last weekend. Miami does have a new Designated Player in Pozuelo who made his debut last weekend and scored 62 without a goal or assist. At the first glance, he seems to fit much better into Miami’s system and is worth monitoring in the upcoming weeks.

San Jose Earthquakes at Portland Timbers

The Timbers offense has been rolling recently. They averaged two goals per game in the past six matches. Their forward position is still a bit iffy between Niezgoda and the recently-recovered Felipe Mora. Whoever gets the start out the two should do well but since we don’t have the luxury of knowing that in advance we’ll have to look elsewhere in the Portland team.

Luckily that’s pretty easy since midfield duo Santiago Moreno and Eryk Williamson (suspended last week) have been in form recently. Claudio Bravo is one of the best bonus-scoring defenders in MLS and this weekend is a good opportunity to play him as well.

Atlanta United at LA Galaxy

The Galaxy have been without Chicharito and Marky Delgado over the past two matches due to the health and safety protocol. Odds are good that both of them are able to return to the starting XI this weekend – be sure to keep an eye out for injury updates there. Joveljic has been the LA Galaxy story of the season so far. After being unable to crack the starting XI and repeatedly scoring off the bench, he has now found a spot in the lineup. The Serbian has four goals in his last five games, of which he started four. Defensively Bond has solid clean sheet odds in goal with upside as well.

RBNY at Austin FC

It would be odd to end this article without mentioning in-form Austin FC who have won four of their last six matches. Don’t expect their form to drop off any time soon either: their next five games are RBNY/SJE/SKC at home and SKC/MIN away. The Red Bulls currently sit at the bottom of the table when it comes to goals scored and goals allowed over the past six. Driussi is Austin’s key man, however, with the berth of attacking options this week it might be more enticing to pick up some Austin defenders. Brad Stuver is a solid keeper and Cascante is the CB of choice here, although his upside is a bit limited.

New England Revolution at Columbus Crew

Adam Buksa left New England a couple of weeks ago and his replacement Vrioni is ready to step into his footsteps. He has his Visa now and has already been training with the team, ahead of a possible debut this weekend:

New England is looking to get back to their 2021 ways with these signings after they’ve been in a bit of a slump to start 2022.

Columbus is the in-form team here. Cucho Hernandez currently has four goals in 137 minutes of play from ~1xG. Cucho’s emergence has catapulted Zelarayan back into the top tiers of SO5 as well. He’s a top midfielder this weekend.

We haven’t spent much time on defenders so far because there are no obvious options this weekend. Columbus is one of the better bets here, especially with Josh Williams and Eloy Room.

So there are plenty of choices for you to pick your five players from – and now it’s up to you to decide! Don’t forget to enter before the 11am Friday deadline – and good luck!

Haaland Foden

Adam @ Football Trader Adam has been scouting for and trading in football games for far too long and for far too many hours. He has a particular interest in the big 5 European Leagues as well as lesser known ones like the Eredivisie, Primeira Liga and even the MLS. Before he managed to somehow make a living by writing about football, he spent ~10 years as a Ministerial adviser and project/risk manager for the UK Government including the Foreign Office and MOD. I really don’t know why there’s not more love for Sterling on here.

Do people not think he’s going to score 200+ points again now? Surely he can get to around 230 points again at Chelsea?

Perhaps but at £10m, 2 early wildcards, Chelsea in a bit of a transition and not amazing fixtures, it's a very very easy wait and see

Wish I could fit him in, but when there's value like Diaz, Jesus, Mount, Foden, wingbacks etc, it becomes hard to fit him in.

I do think 230pts is possible, but if say Diaz got 190, Diaz would be better value. Captaincy is key with Sterling I suppose.

    3. Piggs Boson
      • 12 Years
      1 year, 9 months ago

Yeah, I'd change it to the team I have.

But I personally don't think one forward is viable for two reasons:
      1. Should your forward not play, there is no valid formation to play so you have to use 10 men.
      2. You have only have one playing sub. Subs can be used to step in for last minute injuries, or one week absences, saving you hits. Getting 2-3pts is enough. They are incredibly valuable, and I don't think one is enough.

      1. Sanchit
        • 8 Years
        1 year, 9 months ago

How many times do we actually use our second sub? In the first 8 weeks( assuming WC GW8), there will probably be 3 times you use your second sub at max? That's 6 points.
So if you think choosing a better player can outscore a forward by 6 points in 8 weeks, it balances out.

        1. Piggs Boson
          • 12 Years
          1 year, 9 months ago

Depends on how many early transfers you make. Having a sub safety-net allows you to make subs earlier, and make better use of the early volatile market.

I know I used my 2nd sub way more than 3 times last season, Brighton defender injuries screwed me over, and Tsimikas became an issue. It depends on variance.

    Mendy, (Balcombe)
    TAA, Chilwell, Cancelo, Trippier, Dalot
    Salah, Saka, Coutinho, (Pereira, Dasilva)
    Haaland, Jesus, (Greenwood)

I’d like to try Son instead of Haaland too, but this means 0.5m lost, ie. Coutinho becoming Ward Prowse or something.

You could actually make a really good FPL squad out of just English players: Ramsdale, Pope, TAA, James, Chilwell, Trippier, Cash (he is English), Sterling, Bowen, Foden, Maddison, Mount, Saka, Sancho, Grealish, Rashford, Kane, Vardy, Wilson, Watkins, Toney...

    Ramsdale
    TAA, James, Trippier
    Sterling, Saka, Grealish, Rashford
    Kane(c), Vardy, Wilson
    (Forster, Williams, Patterson, Milner)

U23 team, £7.0m in the bank.

      Meslier, Klaesson
      James, Fofana, Botman, Ait-Nouri, Guehi
      Saka, Foden, Kulusevski, Sancho, Martinelli

      Kane

    Thoughts on this Onemium?

All 11 players from the top clubs.
The one premium which you can obviously switch around will be capped most weeks and you will have decent mid priced captain options all around if the fixture is not favourable.
I have an example with Son below. This could be Salah/Kane/Haaland.

    4.5 4
    TAA Robbo Cancelo James Zinchenko
    Son Diaz Mount Saka 4.5
    Jesus 4.5 4.5

This has 1.5 ITB so we can use that to upgrade the bench.

    1. waltzingmatildas
      • 13 Years
      1 year, 9 months ago

      Looks ok.
If I go one premium, it'd be Salah.
Plus, risky just going with one forward

        Salah + Kulu/any other 8 vs Son + Diaz?

Just dropped Salah because other 3 Liverpool players are too good value. But I agree I might have to get Salah in instead of Son somehow.

Risky because forward bench players won't play?

I've had a one premium team since the get-go. Kane is my choice, because it gives me the opportunity to get Haaland if needed. I also have one of Foden/Mahrez/Grealish in midfield over your Son. Otherwise our teams are pretty much the same.

      1. Sanchit
        • 8 Years

I have not decided on the one premium I'd go for. The midfield spot gives you Son/Salah and forward spot gives you Kane/Haaland.

I like the two up top approach so that you're not caught with your pants down when your only forward gets injured.

I’ve had 4 premiums since a long while now. Had 3 initially and then changed to 4. Trying to get by with a cheap defence and hopefully dodge a few bullets from the premium defence for the first few weeks before an early wildcard.

I do 100%, I never said that they were not premiums. Just the 4 premiums I have gone for is Salah, Son, Kane and Haaland

I think 1 premium is the best possible use of funds if (a big IF) you can get the captain choice correct.

It gives you enough funds and balance all over the team so you can easily jump on early bandwagons. Personally, I would love to go with a 3-5-2 and captain Salah; but I have don't have the balls.

What makes things a little tricky is that the reasonable attacking players from Spurs and Manchester cost premium. Kane / Son / KdB / Haaland.

Sure, there's Kulusevski, Foden, Mahrez, Grealish but none are guaranteed to start all games unlike tge above mentioned players.

Arsenals defence, is it going to get better this season? I really like Gabriel as an option and now I want Zinchenko also. Is a double up ok with their nice early fixtures?

I'll likely have 3x Arsenal. So many good options in Saka, Jesus, Ramsdale, as well as the two you mentioned, among others. Wish I had 4 slots. I like the Gabriel pick at 5 million

Yeah I think we will be more solid squad wise with Zinchenko (in my team) & Saliba plus Tomi back. The CS tailed off badly when Tierney, Tomi & Partey got injured & this destabilised the whole defence.

Not sure it’s worth doubling up on but I would get one in for sure.

Back to basics draft. I'm liking this balance.

    Sanchez Klaesson
TAA Cancelo Chilwell Dalot N. Williams
    Salah Diaz Mount Rashford Andreas
    Haaland Mitrovic Plange

Mount is an interesting pick. He got more goals and assists than Saka did in fewer minutes. If we get some indication that Mahrez is nailed as the RW I'll go with him but starting Mount and then pivoting seems okay as well.

      Quite similar.

If Liverpool & Man City fail to keep a clean sheet in 1 GW, that's 4 of your DEF blanking (assuming they dont score/assist)

I prefer to have 5 DEF from different teams to try maximize the chance of a CS.

Manchester and Liverpool got the most clean sheets last season. 2xManchester + 2xLiverpool will be a total of 42 clean sheets. How can you find a combination to give you more clean sheets? I don't get your logic here.

Def 3 big at the back with a playing 4.5m for me But it looks good can rack up oints quick or miss out on them but that's the game, guess your draft will change within a week anyway

That's my point. On a good GW that DEF could haul but on a bad GW that's 4 blanks from just two teams.
I prefer 3x 6.0m+ with 2x 4.5m. Some really good options at 4.5m in DEF

I feel like going onemium is the best route this season especially if you'll only captain Salah every match anyway, this team looks way more solid to me than any team with both Salah and Haaland/Kane/Son

    Meslier
    TAA - Cancelo - James - Tomiyasu
Salah - Luis Diaz - Mahrez - Mount - Saka
    Jesus

I like this team. I had been on this draft for quite a long time (but recently switched to Kane + Haaland - Salah). I really like the five 8m players in this team -- talk about spreading funds. This is possibly the best use of your money.

You could maybe get one 8.0m mid to a 6.0m and upgrade Tomiyasu. That would look more formidable.

My first real go (depending on Rashford really, might go Bailey if he is a sure starter)

    Raya 4.0
TAA, Cancelo, James, Tripper (Castange) (the last two rotate quite well for 6 weeks)
Salah, Diaz, Rashford, Neto (just the start), Andreas
    Haaland, Jesus, Plange

  26. banskt

Still on this team without Salah. Idea is to start with players from the top 5 teams of last season; WC after week 3, jump on bandwagons early.

    Mendy
    Trent, Robertson, Cancelo, Chilwell, Zinchenko
    Diaz, Mount, Martinelli,
    Kane, Haaland (c)
    (4.0m | 3x4.5m | 0m in the bank)

Problem is I didn't like the budget players from Spurs and Manchester. So, I assess the first 3 weeks before choosing which budget players to pick from those teams, and switching to Salah captain for the rest of the season.

I’m increasingly thinking there is a lot of merit in going Kane and booking in the potential Haaland transfer ….

If any other fires to put out I would hope the gain you make in GW1 would offset that

Also keeps door open to keeping Kane if Haaland struggles to start
