MANCHESTER UNITED 3-1 CRYSTAL PALACE

  • Goals: Martial, Rashford, Sancho | Ward
  • Assists: Dalot, van de Beek, Martial | Milivojevic

Match highlights

Manchester United made it a clean sweep of pre-season victories so far by comfortably defeating Crystal Palace 3-1 in Melbourne.

Attacking trio Anthony Martial (£7.0m), Marcus Rashford (£6.5m) and Jadon Sancho (£7.5m) continue to impress and were all on the scoresheet, which Bruno Fernandes (£10.0m) discussed after the game.

“… the three guys up front have been much more aggressive in the way they press and they are strong too. They make the last line squeeze and it makes the midfielders come a little bit higher, it makes it so, when we recover the ball, we are being closer to the ball too.

We all know that everyone wants to score goals, but the main ones have to be the strikers. They know that they have to be there to score goals and they are doing really well. We have to keep supporting them in making them happy because we know that they lead from the goals.” – Bruno Fernandes

Martial added to his strikes against Liverpool and Melbourne Victory with a composed finish from a lovely left-footed Diogo Dalot cross (£4.5m), while Sancho was electric on the right-wing and has arguably been United’s standout player of the tour so far.

As for Dalot, there was a moment in the first-half when he made another one of those infield runs, cutting inside Sancho and offering a passing option, and it’s that partnership that is already looking strong.

Tyrell Malacia (£4.5m), meanwhile, made his first United start, lasting 77 minutes.

“I think it’s pre-season and we are happy with the improvement we see but also you see a lot of work to do. We scored some wonderful goals and that is also true. I agree (that we are winning the ball higher up in the field in dangerous positions) and that is also the demand on the team. We press all day and, if we can, do that high up the pitch. But if we can’t, we get to do that in a lower block but we also have to press and do it together as a team.” – Erik ten Hag

As for Crystal Palace, Joel Ward (£4.5m) headed in a Luka Milivojevic (£4.5m) corner with 15 minutes remaining, while Jack Butland (£4.5m) was forced off after feeling pain following a fingertip save.

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): de Gea; Dalot (Wan-Bissaka 66), Maguire (Fish 65), Lindelof (Telles 66), Malacia (Laird 77); McTominay (van de Beek 46), Fred (Savage 66); Sancho (Amad 66), Fernandes (Iqbal 66), Rashford (Hannibal 66); Martial (Elanga 66)

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Butland (Matthews 15); Clyne (Quick 65), Andersen (Siddik 77), Ward (O’Brien 77), Mitchell (Adaramola 65); Milivojevic (Boateng 77), Phillips (Ozoh 65), Rak-Sakyi (Raymond 65); Ebiowei (Banks 77), Ayew (Akinwale 77), Mateta (Ola-Adebomi 65)

GILLINGHAM 2-3 CRYSTAL PALACE

  • Goals: Zaha x2, Benteke
  • Assists: Benteke, Zaha

Match highlights

The second part of Crystal Palace’s friendly double-header on Tuesday took place at the Priestfield Stadium, where a Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) brace and Christian Benteke (£5.5m) goal was enough to earn a 3-2 win.

The Eagles put out a strong XI consisting of players who didn’t travel to Singapore and Australia, with Zaha, Benteke, Marc Guehi (£4.5m), Eberechi Eze (£5.5m) and new-signing Cheick Doucoure (£5.0m) all featuring from the off.

Zaha, meanwhile, was in confident mood and heavily involved from the left-wing, while budget forward Luke Plange (£4.5m) followed up his hat-trick against Ipswich Town with another start.

Crystal Palace XI: Goodman, Boateng (Wells-Morrison 68), Sheridan, Guehi (Gordon 68), Riedewald (Addae 68), Doucoure (Bartley 68), Eze (MacArthur 68), Schlupp (Hughes 68), Plange (Cardogan 79), Zaha (Mooney 79), Benteke (Watson 68)

RANGERS 3-1 WEST HAM UNITED

  • Goals: Soucek
  • Assists: Zouma

Match highlights

West Ham United suffered a 3-1 defeat at Ibrox on Tuesday, their first loss of pre-season.

After a finely balanced first-half, Rangers stepped up a gear with three goals inside 15 minutes, before Tomas Soucek (£5.5m) pulled one back from a corner for David Moyes’ side.

Declan Rice (£5.0m) got some more pre-season minutes under his belt but new centre-back signing Nayef Aguerd (£5.0m) picked up an ankle injury, with Issa Diop (£4.5m) coming on in his place.

However, Moyes later revealed the Moroccan hadn’t suffered a break.

“We’ve already had Nayef x-rayed and there’s no break in his ankle, which is good news. It might be some ligaments, or he’s twisted his ankle – it blew up immediately so we have to hope it’s not a problem.” – David Moyes

Elsewhere, Jarrod Bowen (£8.5m) was probably West Ham’s best player but failed to get the goal his play deserved.

“They’re a good side, but I thought the goals showed the other side to us too. It’s not like us to defend the way we did, but that wasn’t the main reason. We didn’t show enough attacking purpose and when we had a couple of half-chances we didn’t take them. Look, it’s a pre-season game, so hopefully we can get it out of the way and move on. It was always going to be a difficult game, but I’m disappointed with a lot of elements of the game and things that we did.

I hope it comes as a good thing having a wake-up call, but I thought it was a good pre-season last year when we won all the games. You want to win the games and you want to go in (to the season) in good form. We certainly need to make a lot of changes and do something different, that’s for sure.” – David Moyes

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski; Johnson (Coufal 55), Zouma, Aguerd (Diop 24), Cresswell, Rice (Downes 55), Lanzini (Soucek 55); Bowen, Fornals (Coventry 75), Benrahma (Vlasic 55), Antonio (Mubama 75)

STRASBOURG 2-2 BRENTFORD

  • Goals: Wissa, Lewis-Potter
  • Assists: Janelt

Match highlights

Brentford’s pre-season tour of Germany ended with a 2-2 draw against Ligue 1 side Strasbourg.

Yoane Wissa (£5.5m) scored a superb first-half effort, blasting into the net after a decent first touch, while Keane Lewis-Potter (£5.5m) is off the mark following his 16m move from Hull City.

The pair may end up competing for minutes in 2022/23, although for those considering Wissa as a budget midfielder, Athletic journalist Jay Harris sounded upbeat on his chances of starting Gameweek 1 in a recent Q&A:

“If Brentford start the season playing 4-3-3, I expect Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo to play rather than Lewis-Potter. Wissa was the club’s second-leading goalscorer last season with 10. Mbeumo recorded the most assists (seven) and Frank also values his work out of possession. This will allow Lewis-Potter to be gradually integrated into the side, instead of being thrown in straight away as he steps up a division from the Championship. The England U21 international’s favourite position is on the left wing, which suggests he will mainly be competing against Wissa for game time, although he is versatile. Lewis-Potter’s arrival gives Frank more options up front.” – Jay Harris, Brentford reporter for The Athletic

Ivan Toney (£7.0m), meanwhile, hit the bar from 10 yards out, with Thomas Frank generally happy with his team’s efforts in the final-third:

“There were a lot of positives. It was a game against a good side and overall, we kept them quiet. I like the intention and intensity. We lacked a bit of quality sometimes. We’d like to play even quicker but the pitch was slow. In the game, we maybe created six chances, so we need to score one or two more goals. We also need to defend better in the box.” – Thomas Frank

Brentford XI (4-3-3): Raya (Cox 60); Hickey (Roerslev 60), Bech (Crama 60), Jansson (Oyegoke 60), Henry (Stevens 60); Jensen (Dasilva 60), Janelt (Trevitt 60), Onyeka (Baptiste 60); Mbeumo (Dervisoglu 60), Wissa (Ghoddos 60), Toney (Lewis-Potter 60)

BRAGA 2-1 BOURNEMOUTH

  • Goals: Solanke
  • Assists:

Match highlights

Bournemouth ended their Portugal training camp with defeat against a strong Braga outfit that finished fourth in the Primeira Liga last season.

However, Dominic Solanke (£6.0m) netted his second goal of pre-season and really should have added to it, going close on several occasions.

Ryan Christie (£5.5m) linked up particularly well with Solanke with some clever passes, while at the other end, ‘keeper Mark Travers (£4.5m) made two smart saves.

In the 70th minute Bournemouth made wholesale changes, with a number of academy prospects taking to the pitch.

Bournemouth XI: Travers (Lossl 70), Smith (Genesini 70), Mepham (Stacey 70), Hill (Greenwood 70), Zemura (Sadi 70), Billing (Lowe 70), Cook (Stanislas 70), Lerma (Marcondes 70), Rothwell (Anthony 70), Christie (Dembele 70), Solanke (Moore 70)

I agree on Trippier, I think he's in for a big season but fixtures aren't the best. Think I'm going with Cash as my 5.0 def.

Same with JWP - I like him for this season, but will wait til I WC to bring him in. Could be a good Rashford replacement if he busts

    A) Sanchez, Mahrez
    B) Ramsdale, Sancho

    1) Diaz, Dalot
    2) Neto, Robertson

Who wins the two dilemmas? I'm on A1 currently.

I think this is pretty good

          4.5 - 4.0
          7.5 - 6.0 - 5.5 - 4.5 - 4.0
          13 - 12 - 6.5 - 5.0 - 4.5
          11.5 - 7.0 - 4.5

          4.5
          7.5, 7.0, 5.0, 5.0, 5.0
          13.0, 12.0, 6.5, 5.5
          11.5
          (4.0, 4.5 x 3)

Would be stupid though because 67% of the time you will pick the wrong captain option.

The more I think of it, the more I like starting with Salah and Kane, then swapping to Haaland.

Salah is most deserving of FOMO, so can't go without him. Haaland is the most exciting new player to the Prem in some time so will want him, regardless if he hasn't proven it in the league. But there's not a sofa big enough to hide behind without Kane or Son for their first fixture. With City playing the last fixture of GW1, you can make that transfer without worrying about price rises

I agree with your comment and Salah has been undoubtedly the most consistent player over the last 6 years.

However, I have a greater FOMO with Haaland than with Salah. In my opinion, the Premier League has never seen a player of his calibre in the last two decades, except Ronaldo in 2007-09. While there has been many exceptionally talented and great players in the Premier League, generational talents like Ronaldo, Messi, Mbappe never showcased their skills in this country. Its the first time that someone of that calibre is coming to the Premier League.

Hey guys just wanted to understand a few points- Assuming you have a star studded squad with the best players each scoring 200. That gives you a total score of 200*12= 2400 (+1 for Captain). Top guys scored 2800+. The chips and transfers give them those extra points. My question is how do they manage this considering lets say your starting eleven which is mostly star studded remains the same. Eg. You aren't removing those premium players like Mo, Kane, etc. and defenders. What are some of the tricks which you need to know here?

nah, I just mean getting it right - of the million/s of active players there will always be a set of 1-20 ish players that get double-digit hauls almost every week from their captain - I'd say taking calculated risks with captaincy can be the best thing you can do, like people who captained James and KDB in the weeks they hauled last season

Agreed I have finished 300k better overall in some seasons with 200 points less than last season.
I usually get about 2300 which equates to 30k to 100k rank.

Trying to get as many players in my team with 200+ point potential is a strategy I like. But if it was that easy I would be winning for the last 14 years 🙂 not finishing in top 100k or a bit worse the last few years.
As stated above it is not about having the right players it’s about having the right players at the right time, that’s where all the fixture versus form discussions come into play. Also as stated above nailing captain hauls is critical.

Thank you for your help! I think you summed it up pretty nicely. They key is as you said "having the right players at the right time". Yeah and captaincy pick seems really crucial. Captain the guy who hauls. If only it were that easy to predict haha ! 🙂

I looked how Jamie Pigott did it last year. Started with

      Sanchez (Foster)
      Coufal-Shaw-Tsimikas-Digne-(White)
      Salah (C)-Son- Fernandes-Torres-Raphinha
      Antonio-(Toney)-(Obafemi)

then made 43 trades lost 40 points in hits. Traded in players like Chukwemeka, Sessegnon, Pukki, Dennis, Mykolenko and many others, made good use of chips on GW 36 got 201 points for example, ended with

      Schmeichel (Foster)
      Sessegnon-Matip-James-Cancelo-(Alonso)
      Son (C)-de Bruyne-Luis Diaz-Mane-(Dewsbury-Hall)
      Pukki-Nketiah-(Dennis)

      And voila 2844 points! Easy...

Hard to do it exactly like that this year as Pukki and Dennis are out of the league...

Thanks for your detailed reply and effort man 🙂 . Transfers and captaincy pick seem to be the main factor driving these high scores. Strategy to keep any player for the entire season goes out of the window I guess lol. 200 points in a week wow!

This could also subjectively confirm that big at the back may not be best at the start of the season, where I think we usually see less CS.

What I also take from this is very little spent up front. It really is not where the points / value are at. But I think Haaland can be so good he clouds that argument somewhat.

You may be right. The top guy on paper started with a questionable backline, star studded midfield and average frontline. And here all of us were starting with 7m defenders lol. Haaland is gonna be insane !

Tbf, Toney is able to bully most CB's. I seem to remember him dominating Liverpool at the start of last year including Van Dijk. Kounde will be great in the PL, huge upgrade.

Maddison could be any 8.0 mid (got Diaz already though). Thanks in advance!

Saka will probably comfortably outscore Jesus if he stays on pens........I'm locking Kane>Haaland for GW2 but it's oh so tempting to start off with Perisic and Son vs Southampton instead of Justin and Salah

      Ramsdale (Darlow)
      TAA Cancelo James Zinchenko (Justin)
      Salah Diaz Saka Rashford Bailey
      Kane (Greenwood) (Taylor)

The last spot on my team is the 8mil midfielder spot.

I know it's been debated but who do you think should take the spot?

      My thoughts are;

      - Mount = Great fixtures, always plays, on free kicks I believe

      - Saka = Great fixtures, always plays, might be on pens

      - Kulu = Feel like the wingback comments are unfounded, good fixtures and is Spurs coverage if Haaland comes in for Kane

      - Mahrez/Foden = Mahrez in particular can be explosive but are rotation risks

      1. SADIO SANÉ
        • 8 Years

I'll be going Kulu and then swapping him to whichever City mid is going up in price before GW2 (and then praying he starts)

I like Saka is the best all around pick, followed by mount. I want Kulu since I don't think I can get Son/Kane in my squad, but unsure about his security of starts/minutes with Richarlison in the squad. Foden/Mahrez I'll look into more when I have a deeper squad to negate the Pep roulette. I assume you already have Diaz? I think he'll have a great year, just not convinced how much it will translate into FPL points

      4. banskt

        Here's the remaining two:
        - Maddison = Good fixtures, always plays, on free kicks and corners, no European games
        - Diaz = Great fixtures, always plays, can be explosive

Anyway, I am leaning towards Mount, Diaz, Saka and Maddison, in that order. Since all of them scored similar points per game, I am trying to figure out the biggest underachiever last season, expecting their points to go up this season. Keeping a watch on Mahrez / Foden - if any one of them starts all the first 3 games, I will buy him immediately.

I guess Martinelli will be on penalties. But who knows?

Problem with Kulu is Conte has played Richarlison RW (Kulu's spot) multiple times in preseason already.

Richarlison arguably fitter as Kulu had a bit of a knock. Also Rich is the shiny new signing.

Both will obviously get playtime but there's he'll start sometimes, be on the bench others etc...

      Raya

you're getting 6.5 ppg, 5.6-5.8 ppg then like 5.3-5.5 ppg, I guess the question is can you with good rotation of 5 mil options (like Cash, Gabriel, Trippier etc) can you get 4.5 ppg and then use the spare cash in midfield and up front

but for me premium defenders are must haves, it's just a question of picking the right ones

If you changed Martinelli to Bruno G you'd have the most template team possible.
But the template is the template for a reason, it's a nice looking team with few weaknesses.

      Is this too risky

      Sánchez/Steele
      Taa/James/Jonny/Tjasu/Cancelo
      Salah/Marinelli/Neto
      Kane/Haaland/

      Dasilva/Archer/Gordon

Not if you are okay with an early WC

Is a Saka and Jesus double up too much?

Also what’s everyone’s thoughts on Vardy as an option?

Too old and not in a good enough side to justify his price i think

No. Good fixtures. If either are a problem they are at good price points for an easy transfer away (lots of good 8m MIDs & Jesus to anyone under his price that looks good. E.g. Martial?)

concern would be Nketiah, how much gametime will he be getting, pushing Jesus out of the team, or Jesus out to the right and Saka out of the team

I'm looking to double up but from gameweek 3 onwards, with 1 from the start. Gives 2 weeks to assess if they're worth investing double attack into while the fixtures are slightly more difficult. Also lets you punt on a short term alternative.

Watch this if you’re on the fence about BrunoG.

      What a guy…!

Also for those of you that remember The Fast Show, do you get Julio Geordio vibes from this? 🙂

      RMT

Pretty set, im being mega brave and going without Salah. Cant look past 8.0 Diaz and i think hes gonna be mint.

      Raya
      Trent, James, Cancelo, Perisic
      Rashford, Son, Foden, L.Diaz
      Haaland, Mitrovic
      (Balcombe, N.Williams, Murphy, Greenwood)

Won’t find many better Non-Salah drafts than this. I’d prefer a more assured 4.5 mid than Murphy, however.

its a good team and you have good C choices there with Son and Haaland.

        - Rashford and Foden may often miss games.
        - Mitrovic has failed in the PL in the past -- take that as you will (Salah and de Bruyne were also failures).
        - Perisic will almost certainly be substituted quite often, sometimes before 60 minutes.

Why take these risks? Without Salah, there must be enough money to have quality players all over the pitch. My team is also without Salah. I am going with Kane + Haaland, and the only risk I am taking is Martinelli.

In your opinion who is the Best < 5.5m ST to have, that will consistently score you at a couple of points each game

      Any ideas would be welcomed

Gelhardt maybe but feels risky. 5.5 MIDs feel safer options for GW1
