How to compare FPL players using minutes/appearance filters

When comparing players in the Premium Members Area of Fantasy Football Scout, it’s often useful to look at their ‘Minutes Per’ stats or check the ‘per90’ filter to level the playing field.

This makes a comparison between players with disparate playing times more insightful.

Ideally we want to target players who are certain starters, but first XI players may have missed a period through injury or perhaps they’ve burst onto the scene and gone on to establish themselves after impressing as a sub.

‘Minutes Per’ or ‘per90’ allows us to see who performs best if playing time were equal.

However, it’s important not to forget time played entirely; a sub who makes an impact off the bench might top a per90 stats table but that doesn’t mean we should be adding them to our Fantasy team.

By the same token, players who regularly complete matches will suffer compared to those taken off earlier in the game. Last season Gabriel Martinelli (£6.0m) averaged 64 minutes per match, so is looking at his per 90 stats slightly misleading if he’s not playing 90 minutes? A per appearance comparison might be better.

As always, context and interpretation is important.

Refining Results

To help improve the results of a per90 comparison, last season we added two important filters to our Player Stats tables:

  • Minimum Appearances (‘Min App’)
  • Minutes Played per Appearance (‘Mins/App’)

Now we can refine our sample size by filtering out players who haven’t played many games, and we can also remove substitutes by setting the Minutes per Appearance (‘Mins/App’) filter.

  • top ten ‘minutes per expected goals’ from 2021/22 with Mane and Aubameygang removed

Applying these settings to our KPI Attacking table and sorting by ‘Minutes per Expected Goal’ makes for interesting reading.

Raheem Sterling (£10.0m) and Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) feature prominently but while both are likely to get more pitch time this season, will they sustain their impressive ‘minutes per expected goal’ rates away from Man City?

Conditional Formatting

Premium Members have the option to refine their results even further when creating a custom Members table.

The ‘Conditions’ in a custom Members table act like the filters in Player Stats.

But, unlike in the Player Stats section, there’s no restriction on the filters/conditions that can be applied. So you can be much more specific with your requirements.

Perhaps you feel a minimum of 60 minutes per appearance is too generous and that 70 minutes would be better, you can apply that setting in a custom Members table.

  • top eight ‘xG per Shot Non-Penalty’ from 2021/22 with Mane removed

When creating this ‘High Quality Chances’ table, rather than filtering by the number of appearances I decided to set a minimum number of non-penalty shots instead. I also upped my ‘Minutes Played per Appearance’ to a floor of 70 minutes and added a ‘Minutes Played per Start’ filter.

The table throws up some fascinating results but perhaps raises more questions than answers.

Playing for a new team, in a new system, will Sterling continue to be presented with such high-quality chances? Or will Thomas Tuchel adapt his approach to get the best out of his new recruit?

Will Phil Foden’s (£8.0m) xG per Shot suffer following the arrival of Erling Håland (£11.5m) as centre forward?

Can the elite finishers from that table, Son Heung-min (£12.0m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.5m), who needed just 0.7 and 0.69 xG to score one goal, maintain their high level in front of goal?

Time Out

Whether it’s used for filtering results or for making an informed comparison, ‘time played’ is one of the most important considerations for a Fantasy manager.

And with the implementation of the five substitutes rule next season, it’s likely to play an even greater role in our decision-making.

In part two, we’ll reveal the tweaks we’ve made to our time played stat used for all ‘Minutes Per’ and ‘per90’ metrics. In particular how we’ve improved the minutes recorded for those substituted in a match.

Often a stat we take for granted, playing time can have a crucial bearing on the stats tables we use when planning our transfers.

Didn't know ESR was still having injury issues, looks like Martinelli should be fairly safe to start the season with if Arsenal don't sign another winger. Now to decide whether to stick with Odegaard or fall in line a bit more with the template and take the chance on Martinelli again...

Tough choice tbh, ive gone Rash at that price point - if you already have Rash and have 6.5 spare, maybe Martinelli and try and upgrade elsewhere with the 0.5?

I don't have Rashford and doubt I'll get him, not to start with at least, but I suppose I won't completely rule it out. The extra .5 could certainly be helpful elsewhere, I'll have to try to play around with it a bit

You mean Dias. I don't bother with City mids unless it's KdB. But obviously space for Haaland when fixtures turn.

Any suggestions on the below GW1 draft?

    Ramsdale, 4.0
    Robertson, James, Dias, dalot, neco
    Son, Diaz, Mount, Rashford, Andreas
    Haaland, Jesus, 4.5

0.5 in the bank, switch from mount to Bowen in GW2 (facing Nottingham Forest)

    Thanks!

Draft completed minus one decision :

Mount & 4.5m forward, or Jesus & 4.5m midfielder? So who makes most points over first 6 games:

Anyone think that there’s real value in Sancho? Not much United players in teams to begin with (which is understandable with how the season went) but with ETH as manager Sancho is looking good so far and is looking nailed. He looks good for goal contributions and the BPS. The fast pace, possession based play looks decent and is a good 7.5 option if someone wanted to downgrade a 8.0.

my only 8 is Saka, and id much rather have him or another 8m over Sancho. Plus Rash at 6.5 is better value i think

I do feel for the 1.0 Sancho form may be overall more consistent. I think it may be good to change a 8.0 to a 7.5 like him and upgrade the team elsewhere maybe have a good rotation bench player

Depends which 8 youd change mate?
And Andreas at 4.5 and Neco at 4 are perfectly good bench players - granted i was thinking about using an extra 0.5 to upgrade Neco for say Dalot, but he'd just be on my bench

I actually have Andreas and Neco as bench players. The third is Greenwood. My team is looking very template and like other teams practically some of the most common so was gonna try something a little different without going overboard.

Was downgrading Saka to Sancho and upgrading Perisic to Dias.

Problems with Mahrez rotation and I feel for an extra 1.0 Sancho will offer better consistency but Rashy still a good punt. It’s 50/50 between them for a United option right now in attack/mid. Mahrez I’m not convinced he will start a lot of games

More Salah exceptionalism... things do change, you know? Salah was playing in a different front 3, no Håland, no Conte to boost Son/Kane. Also you would have done alright with that exact play to start last year

Yup, I had captain Fernandes GW1 and transferred him out after GW3 to Salah (I think).

Just seems like quite a lot of more experienced players than me tend accumulate these little rules like "Digne never again" which are probably good for a while, until they stop you from adapting to change.

Morning all. Does anyone know if there is a way to download or access points projections and/or any other stats form the members area via some kind of (REST?) API for analysis? I'm guessing this probably isn't encouraged, but wanted to check.

        Meslier,

        Trent, Cancelo, Perisic,

        Salah, Son, Diaz, Bailey,

        Jesus, Mitrovic, Solanke

        Klaesson, Dunk, Andreas, Nico

This feels like a safe and cosy traditional 3-4-3 formation. Dunk and Bailey can rotate. Replace Peridic with whichever spurs WB if not fit by start of the season.

Having two promoted forwards seems a bit risky. I think there's better potential in the similarly priced mids (Martinelli, Bruno G, etc).

        Option A ( 4-4-2)
        Mendy 4.0
        TAA James Perisic Trippier (Neco)
        Sterling Mahrez Maddison Bowen (Andreas)
        Kane Jesus ( Greenwood)

        Option B ( 5-3-2)
        TAA Robbo James Perisic Doherty/Tripper
Salah Mahrez Rashford ( Andreas) ( Da Silva)
        Haaland Jesus ( Greenwood)

rashford is a punt in Option B will downgarde to Neto and use the 1 mil in defence if needed.

I think option A has the potential to be more explosive but option B is less risky. Any thoughts?

I’ve held on to my premiums but dropped Jesus in order to upgrade midfield slightly ( yes my defence is still Uber 🙂 )

        Meslier
        Dalot, Tomiyasu, Mings
        Salah, Son, Rashford, Martinelli, Bailey

Hmm I think this is a nice threemium.

        Meslier
        TAA James Perisic Zinchenko Digne
        Salah Bailey
        Haaland Kane Jesus

Pereira and Dasilva to come on as subs if anyone missing. Digne will eventually turn into Cucurella.

Agreed. Playing a 2 man midfield that includes Bailey looks a bit off. I’d much prefer Martinelli to Perisic.

              Wont it be sth like:
              Partey Zinchenko
              Saka Ødegaard Martinelli
              Jesus

If he's even nailed that is. Can't really be sure yet but I find it hard to see him getting many assists with Ode ahead of him.

Thinking of 3-5-2 (but that seems to be a bit against the grain), there’s enough 6-7m mids with potential value that I think it might be easier to rearrange during the season.

        Raya (Sanchez)
        Chilwell, James, Fofana (Botman, Williams)
        Salah, Diaz, ASM, Rashford, Sinisterra
        Haaland, Jesus (Gelhardt)

Hi buddies, yes no Salah for me and yes a few punts in the midfield but overall I believe I will to with something close to the below.

        But… I NEED YOUR HELP!

        Allison-(Steele)
        James-Robertson-Cancelo-Dalot-(Neco)
        Diaz-Sancho-Foden-?-(Andreas)
        Haaland-?-(Archer)

So for the question marks, do you prefer:
        a) Sterling+Jesus
        b) Martinelli+Kane (+0.5 itb)

If Azpi leaves and Chelsea sign a couple of CB's, James will probably be used in the wing back position, in which case I think he's the better option.

If they fail to sign two CB's, he could still be used a right CB which makes Chilwell the better pick imo.
