How to compare FPL players using minutes/appearance filters

When comparing players in the Premium Members Area of Fantasy Football Scout, it’s often useful to look at their ‘Minutes Per’ stats or check the ‘per90’ filter to level the playing field.

This makes a comparison between players with disparate playing times more insightful.

Ideally we want to target players who are certain starters, but first XI players may have missed a period through injury or perhaps they’ve burst onto the scene and gone on to establish themselves after impressing as a sub.

‘Minutes Per’ or ‘per90’ allows us to see who performs best if playing time were equal.

However, it’s important not to forget time played entirely; a sub who makes an impact off the bench might top a per90 stats table but that doesn’t mean we should be adding them to our Fantasy team.

By the same token, players who regularly complete matches will suffer compared to those taken off earlier in the game. Last season Gabriel Martinelli (£6.0m) averaged 64 minutes per match, so is looking at his per 90 stats slightly misleading if he’s not playing 90 minutes? A per appearance comparison might be better.

As always, context and interpretation is important.

Refining Results

To help improve the results of a per90 comparison, last season we added two important filters to our Player Stats tables:

  • Minimum Appearances (‘Min App’)
  • Minutes Played per Appearance (‘Mins/App’)

Now we can refine our sample size by filtering out players who haven’t played many games, and we can also remove substitutes by setting the Minutes per Appearance (‘Mins/App’) filter.

  • top ten ‘minutes per expected goals’ from 2021/22 with Mane and Aubameygang removed

Applying these settings to our KPI Attacking table and sorting by ‘Minutes per Expected Goal’ makes for interesting reading.

Raheem Sterling (£10.0m) and Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) feature prominently but while both are likely to get more pitch time this season, will they sustain their impressive ‘minutes per expected goal’ rates away from Man City?

Conditional Formatting

Premium Members have the option to refine their results even further when creating a custom Members table.

The ‘Conditions’ in a custom Members table act like the filters in Player Stats.

But, unlike in the Player Stats section, there’s no restriction on the filters/conditions that can be applied. So you can be much more specific with your requirements.

Perhaps you feel a minimum of 60 minutes per appearance is too generous and that 70 minutes would be better, you can apply that setting in a custom Members table.

  • top eight ‘xG per Shot Non-Penalty’ from 2021/22 with Mane removed

When creating this ‘High Quality Chances’ table, rather than filtering by the number of appearances I decided to set a minimum number of non-penalty shots instead. I also upped my ‘Minutes Played per Appearance’ to a floor of 70 minutes and added a ‘Minutes Played per Start’ filter.

The table throws up some fascinating results but perhaps raises more questions than answers.

Playing for a new team, in a new system, will Sterling continue to be presented with such high-quality chances? Or will Thomas Tuchel adapt his approach to get the best out of his new recruit?

Will Phil Foden’s (£8.0m) xG per Shot suffer following the arrival of Erling Håland (£11.5m) as centre forward?

Can the elite finishers from that table, Son Heung-min (£12.0m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.5m), who needed just 0.7 and 0.69 xG to score one goal, maintain their high level in front of goal?

Time Out

Whether it’s used for filtering results or for making an informed comparison, ‘time played’ is one of the most important considerations for a Fantasy manager.

And with the implementation of the five substitutes rule next season, it’s likely to play an even greater role in our decision-making.

In part two, we’ll reveal the tweaks we’ve made to our time played stat used for all ‘Minutes Per’ and ‘per90’ metrics. In particular how we’ve improved the minutes recorded for those substituted in a match.

Often a stat we take for granted, playing time can have a crucial bearing on the stats tables we use when planning our transfers.

Can we seriously consider any Spurs wing backs yet? Seems like so much uncertainty yet Perisic is owned by nearly 50% of players.

His only competition will be Sessegnon so should play fairly regularly when he's fully fit. Probably won't start GW1. I'm gonna get him in GW3 I think.

A lot of ins and outs will occur the day before the deadline when Conte updates us on fitness issues. If Perisic is confirmed to start, I'll get him.

I took a look back at my sheet from before prices were released and tweaked a bit. The resulting team based on value is this:

    Sanchez
    TAA Robertson James Chilwell
    Diaz Mahrez Martinelli
    Haaland Jesus Vardy

Steele | Neco, Andreas, Dasilva | 1.0 ITB

    Narrowly missing out:

    Trippier
    Digne
    Nketiah
    Gabriel
    Mings
    Cash
    Son

Upgrading Neco to Trippier seems like wasted money, so may as well keep the money in the bank instead of the bench. Would be worth it if it was a starting XI spot. I'd love to get him or Son in though.

Martinelli I feel is the worst value in this team, possibly followed by Vardy due to fixtures. Unfortunately 0.5 shy of Mahrez + Vardy > Son + Nketiah.

Could do Martinelli + Vardy to Son + 4.5 FWD, but I feel Vardy and Martinelli outscores Son and Neco/Andreas/Dasilva. What do you think?

Tbh, I wouldn’t be sure about that if you pick the right budget player each week. Where has Salah placed to not even narrowly miss out?

I think Salah is a bit overpriced, so there are quite a few players ahead of him who I think are underpriced. You'll notice that Son is the only midfielder on that list, so it's not like I've put Salah at the bottom of the queue. 🙂

Can also do TAA + Martinelli + Vardy > Trippier + Son + Nketiah

Like the team overall. Was looking for ways to trim the defence but doesn't seem viable to get to Son that way so its prob him or Vardy. Feel bullish on Vardy to start so nothing against going with that & if you want to make the switch to Son later you could also do something like Mahrez & Vardy - Son & Johnson

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years

I agree he could be, but he needs to improve his output first. I think he's priced right at 6.0 for the start of the season, so not of the opinion that he's incredible value. Also not looked on-form in pre-season so far, imo, based on highlights. But if ESR still has niggles when the season starts, he's worth a go!

Pens I guess is possible but seems to be wishful thinking based on 1 event? Veira has a good record, and maybe there won't be a single assigned pen taker. Idk

You think he's better than Mendy? It doesn't matter to me that I have two Chelsea defenders, except that I would take a Chelsea spot. But that's not a huge issue either as I expect to WC early.

I still wonder if the money is better in the bank, more valuable to provide some flexibility and prevent hits, perhaps.

Honestly, im not sure who is better. Newcastle did well last end of the season and Pope is quality so will still get those save points
I have Mendy just due to his value this year. Also having Pope will keep Chelsea options open, eg Sterling might be hammering it so changing a defender/GK to get an extra Chelsea player in would be a -4.

If youre happy with your team mate, that 1m ITB is gold tbh

Bc he’s a 5m midfielder who looks like he might start on the wing for a decent attacking side. Also he was a pretty good returner in the Bundesliga for Leverkusen, so he has history/potential.

Seeing tons of teams with Haaland, Kane and Jesus makes me think that people have goldfish memory and didn't learn anything from the previous season.

I give them 5-7 gameweeks before their frontline is composed of Solanke, Toney and a 4.5m fodder.

The Spence signing has slight echoes of AWB for me. Spence was not wanted by Boro (AWB was not that highly rated by Palace), has one decent season under Cooper (AWB 18-19 Hodgson) and the big clubs come sniffing

A signing not even requested by Conte. Slightly odd

      1. InsertPunHere
        • 1 Year
        1 year, 9 months ago

Well at least Spence is used to the system and playing style that Conte wants to put in place (attacking overlapping wing-back role for him I mean), whereas AWB came into United as a proficient defender but not much going forward, which clashed with Solskjaer’s philosophy.

        1. Ser Davos

          Very true

Just can't help wonder if there's more going on behind the scenes with some of these signings. I think in this particular case, Spence has simply shown himself to be a proficient RWB for Conte's system

            • 1 Year
            1 year, 9 months ago

He’s not expected to start straight away either like AWB was, so he’ll be given time to gel with the rest of the team. We have enough options there that he doesn’t have to play too often if he struggles initially, and he’s still young. I think it’s a pretty good signing tbh.

    Which is better?

    A) Ederson and Dias
    B) 4.5m GK and Cancelo?

Assume with B there will be one less City player.

Currently thinking is City will keep a lot of CSs in first ten, more than Cancelo attacking returns, so A?

I would disagree with that, and if you choose right with your keeper you wouldn’t be missing out on many points, as Ederson tends not to get save points or bonus points. B for me.

By ‘that’ I mean that City keep more clean sheets than Cancelo gets returns, especially if he’s playing more advanced on the right if Cucurella comes in and starts.

I think the 4.5 keepers are all poor this season, like you say owning Sanchez is not fun at all.

I'd say 5m is the way forward. Ramsdale, Mendy, Pope, Martinez etc

As season-keepers they probably are. I'm poised to start with Meslier until we know what the Brentford situation is, but if a cheap outfielder emerges that I can jump onto, releasing cash, I'd probably upgrade the keeper - possibly with my wildcard.

Which midfielder up to 6.5m would you have as first sub to have for the first 8 weeks or so?

    Rashford? Martinelli? Neto? Anyone else?

I’ve got Aaronson starting. Seems to have played well preseason, and Leeds have nice fixtures to start. Does mean I’m on a Leeds triple-up by accident (Meslier, Klaesson, Aaronson).

I’d strongly advise against spending 6.5m on a sub. I think Martinelli is my pick of the bunch at that price point and below though.

    Kyle Walker on Haaland:
"Erling has been really good," said Walker. "He's young - we have to take that into consideration.

"Obviously he's got big responsibilities and probably big boots to fill with Aguero being the last - bar [Gabriel] Jesus - out-and-out striker for Manchester City.

"But from what I've seen in training he looks strong, he looks powerful and he looks eager, and that's the main thing. As long as he keeps his standards, keeps doing what he was doing at Dortmund and brings the same mentality and adapts to the Premier League.

"We all know it's very difficult. No one really comes into a team and hits the ground running straightaway so he's going to need time, but that's down to us as players, managers and the club as a whole to make sure that we're making him feel as welcome as possible."

Wingbacks are a rotation nightmare at Spurs. Romero would be good for clean sheets but is a yellow card magnet!

Double Chelsea gets you guaranteed starting wingbacks in a top team, who both have a history of consistent or explosive attacking returns. Double Spurs means you get Eric Dier and Ben Davies. Slightly harsh, but you’d have to go centre backs because the wingbacks aren’t as nailed (Doherty the more secure imo), who will almost never get more than 6 points. Plus Chelsea under Tuchel have a better defence historically - Conte factor means that might not be as much of a factor this season though.

There are a couple of decent budget attackers though, whilst everything under 7.5 in midfield is pretty ... yeah, not too interesting. Maybe Martinelli

Yeah, he’s the best option up front beyond the premiums, whereas Saka is competing against six other players at his exact price. Saka price rise makes him seem less appealing, even if may still be good value, and Jesus has the advantage of having been rather prolific in pre season. All this plus the new signing boost and the fact he’s coming from City. Same will happen with Zinchenko before long.

This has been one of the more difficult seasons to prep a team for, I think. Lot's of moves and variables, plus the new sub rule.

Tinkered so much, but have got this as a 5-4-1. Worried about depth though

    Sanchez (Forster)

    Cancelo, TAA, James, Robertson, Tripper

    Salah, Saka, Rashford, Bailey (Andreas)

    Haaland (Wood), (Forss)
