FPL team guides: Aston Villa – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

The three newest additions to the Premier League, Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth, were all profiled in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off), so we begin our team-by-team guides with Aston Villa.

It was a season of steady progress at Villa Park in 2021/22, with Aston Villa’s 14th-place finish not terrible given the loss of talisman and captain Jack Grealish (£7.0m) shortly before the campaign commenced, plus the change in management midway through.

With Steven Gerrard taking the reins in Gameweek 12, all of the team statistics featured here are from that point onwards.

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

From Steven Gerrard’s arrival in Gameweek 12 onwards, Aston Villa ranked seventh overall for goals scored, with 38 in 27 matches.

The all-important underlying attacking statistics, meanwhile, paint the picture of a mid-table Premier League side, which feels okay given that the most expensive FPL option for Villa costs £7.5m.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

On inspection, Villa’s defence actually performed very well under Gerrard, suggesting their backline can offer value when the fixtures fall kindly in 2022/23.

The recent additions of defensive midfielder Boubacar Kamara (£5.0m) and centre-half Diego Carlos (£5.0m) could potentially tighten them up further, too.

Gerrard often turned to Douglas Luiz (£5.0m) in the number six role last season, also experimenting with Calum Chambers (£4.5m) and Tim Iroegbunam (£4.5m), but French international Kamara feels like a significant upgrade, which could have a positive impact on Villa’s clean sheet potential.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best mid-price FPL forwards for 2022/23 5

In an appealing opening run, Aston Villa kick start the new season away to newly-promoted Bournemouth, then face Everton and Crystal Palace.

Beyond that, things stiffen up considerably.

In fact, Gerrard’s troops meet four of last season’s top eight between Gameweeks 4 and 7, which includes clashes against West Ham United, Arsenal, champions Manchester City and Leicester City.

However, Gameweek 8 looks like the ideal time to ‘hop on’ their assets, with fixtures against Southampton, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Brentford either side of Chelsea in Gameweek 11.

Are we all getting on the Bailey wagon then? I could be convinced... He is very cheap and those first two games are very good.

Frustratingly he's been in my team since one of my first drafts. Hopefully a few more different bandwagons before the season starts.

You got another 5.0 in mind or will you fodder the position and change formation?

The idea is I move on Brighton from GW4. Ederson/Bailey > Sanchez/Trossard. On paper anyway. I also have Neto on and off the bench.

I’ve been on him from the start as a gamble. He has a lot to prove after the injury but I think he’ll have managed shared game time to begin with. The fun bit is seeing if he can do anything with the minutes he gets.

    Pope
    TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, Doherty
    KDB, Maddison, JWP, Neto
    Kane, Jesus

Darlow. S Longstaff, Lyle Taylor, Neco

    Which is the weakest pick?

Ward-Prowse and Neto imo. Weak FPL options.

I don't know much about Neto, but I wouldn't call JWP a weak FPL option. Consistently great value and good returns. He's got some competition in his bracket this season and a couple of difficult early fixtures, but far from weak imo. Looks a very good shout for WC in GW6 or 7

          1. DelPiero10
              1 year, 9 months ago

He blanks way too often. The odd mega-haul and one rush of points per season doesn't outweigh the long runs of complete whiffs. Every attacking return is set-piece based, so highly unpredictable. Keeping him long-term just isn't an option, and with early WC this season, he's very much a weak pick, imo.

Doherty is the weakest pick for me. Uncertainty about his place in the team and not sold on Spurs defence: I think there are better 5.0 options such as Zinc or Trippier; maybe Cash/Digne.

Trying to decide between Kdb and Dasilva 451 or Haaland and Bailey 352 for gw1. I’d probably move one of Kane/Son to whoever I don’t have for gw2 anyway.

Not 100% convinced about Raya starting, and the other 4.5 keepers are a bit meh.

What is weekly transfer really valued at in terms of points?
Let's say I have 2 transfers collected and still do not have any changes to make, would I then use a transfer to exchange a player with a bad fixture to a player with a good one and then reverse the trade next week?
Eg. Suppose I have Newcastle's Botman, in GW3 he is likely to not score anything, could I exchange him for any player like Leicester defender for a week and then get him back the following week and waste 2 transfers?
In other words rotation using free GW transfers?

          I'm not sure I follow.

Depends if you need to make additional changes which may cost you. Therefore the cost is 4 points.

I don't have any use of the transfer and 2 have collected, rather than it going to waste shouldn't I rotate a player and use it?

              Oh yeah 100%.

The value in it is any uplift you get in points, so it's hard to predict but easy to say retrospectively.

Thing is you can't predict red cards, injuries etc

There's always a tweak to a bench asset, even the 2nd keeper that could be done.

Some say you should think of every free transfer as being worth 4pts, but I'm not sure of the theory behind this besides its correlation to the cost of a hit. I think Camzy is an advocate...?

In my experience, you'll rarely be so bored for transfer ideas as to end up taking someone out for just one game. But do try to plan your squad with 2-3 spots that are quite fluid so you can rotate (mid-priced, usually) players with blocks of favourable fixtures

          1. Dags
            • 1 Year
            1 year, 9 months ago

Yeah that's what I wanted to know. Free transfer being valued at 4 points adds up to 152 points a season which you need to earn via transfers. Camzy is a pro on this?
Yeah I'm setting up my team for 8 weeks straight. Unless some guy is injured or someone under the radar is in insane form, I could use the free trasnfers for rotation of players right?

Just seen Camzy suggest it before, I think.
Yeah you can plan some rotation but allow for the fact that injuries may suck up a couple of transfers too.

I would make the assumption that you will need your free transfer for something more pressing.
Either way, I wouldn't waste two transfers on a low impact player exchange.

anyone feel dias is a better pick than cancelo pound for pound? he only had five less attacking returns last season with over 800 minutes less game time. If he played as many he'd probably have been on 180-190 points.

mmm he seems stuck at 140 points ceiling. Cancelo plays 90 mins week in week out which is incredible given his forays forward

I do like Laporte/Dias though combined with Alisson

Definitely a more than valid point and keeping an eye on

There is a good argument that backs what you are saying.

I'm on Cancelo due to FOMO at the moment but I've also got 1.5ITB and I don't need the spare cash.

I think the upside/ceiling/potential/whatever you wanna call it is much higher with Cancelo. I know he only scored 1 from 83 but he's consistently in and around the box crossing and shooting. Plus seems injury proof.

For me, Dias can be rotated with Stones. Cancelo seems never to need resting and will play far more minutes. If it's short term up to a WC you're thinking, Dias might be better value - providing he's fit to start.

Yer, the rotation is also a risk. Dias ahead of a early doors WC is good shout. As long as Cancelo doesn't rack up the points and rise too much. Tbf, I'm starting the season with zero MCI defence.

            Cancelo 200 - Laporte 160 - Dias 140

            40- 60 points, 1m gap

            Trent 200 - Robbo 180-190 - VVD 180-190

            10-20 points, 1-1.5m gap

someone made an excellent point that you'd be better placed to save 1m by going TAA to VVD than Cancelo to Laporte/Dias

Defenders will be more vulnerable to monkeypox transmission , crowding together in the box on set-pieces. Switching to three at the back. Five-dimensional chess people !

First time in all my time playing the game I have seen people going with 1 or 2 striker formations at the start of the season. Literally everyone posting their teams is going for a cheap 4.5m forward all of a sudden.

The prices of defenders this year is about 0.5-1.0m too short.

Cannot believe Reece James came in at 6.0m for example, Ivan Toney is 7.0m…

I've mocked up tons of drafts. Tried a few 433, 343 formations - just seem terrible value with the defenders prices this year. Tried one up top a few times but risky if that forward doesn't play, so settling on a 532/442 formation. With a cheap defender and midfielder who do play, the 3rd benchie is wholly redundant, hence the non-playing 4.5 forward.
