FPL Draft: Tips for picking players in the draft

Fantasy Premier League Draft is free to play and runs parallel with old-school FPL. If you’re already registered for the long-running FPL game, you can also immediately get involved with Draft.

Draft uses exactly the same scoring system as FPL with only one exception: there are no captains or vice-captains. There are also no chips or Wildcards.

The biggest difference, of course, is that no two managers in the same mini-league can own the same player.

Here, community writer Rdrake1990 talks us through some tips for the draft process.

The Background

I’m in a five-team FPL draft league with some friends from school. I was leading for 24 out of the 38 weeks in 2021/22 and went into the final week with a two-point lead. Unfortunately, I had a bad final week and my rival had a good one and I ended up 34 points back – which oddly was the biggest gap between first and second all season.

Of course, this hurt. But when I looked at our original draft squads it transpired I had the worst one in the league, but I did well picking up players on waivers. This got me wondering: what is the best order to pick players in the initial draft, and how well did the winners of other five-team leagues do at picking at the start of the season?

The optimal choices

I’ve been over the player points for the last six years and used those to get some average points for the best possible picks across a five-team league – that is, the top 10 goalkeepers, the top 25 defenders, the top 25 midfielders and the top 15 forwards. Doing this, we get an overall draft order that drops out like this:

FPL Draft: Tips for picking players in the draft

Two things really strike me.

Firstly, you can see here just how large the drop-off is in quality during potential round one picks. The very best midfielder (in recent years, almost always Mohamed Salah for what it’s worth), is usually worth about 30 points more than the second best one, and 60 points better than the fourth or fifth best, who’d still be a round one pick for someone. In the existing version of FPL Draft, it’s just random who gets handed this potential advantage, although personally, I’d like to have the option of rolling over a league and giving the first pick to whoever finished bottom the season before.

The second thing that sticks out is that after round one and two, there are only about 40 or 50 points between the players you’re picking up in rounds three or four and those coming right at the end in an ‘optimal’ selection. What this says to me is that there are probably lots of ways to win in the draft, and that all is not lost if you draft badly. This also matches up with my experience this year.

But supposing we want to pick the best possible players right from the start, what order should you pick them in?

The very best forward probably creeps into being a first-round pick but basically, everyone’s first pick should be a midfielder. This means that in round two, you probably want a top forward, and then probably in round three you should see people taking the best defenders. After round three, it’s more of a mixed bag in the middle rounds, but based solely on total points, the best order is probably something like:

  • 1 – MID
  • 2 – FWD
  • 3 – DEF
  • 4 – MID
  • 5 – FWD
  • 6 – GK
  • 7 – MID
  • 8 – DEF
  • 9 – MID
  • 10 – GK
  • 11 – DEF
  • 12 – MID
  • 13 – DEF
  • 14 – FWD
  • 15 – DEF

The big surprise here for me was the goalkeepers appearing so high, especially the second one. The truth is you can only play one at a time, so unless you are specifically rotating yours through the season, in practical terms it makes sense to wait until the end to pick your second one. In a five-team league, everyone can have two top ten side keepers, after all.

Anyway, that’s an attempt at an optimal order, but how did winning managers this season draft theirs?

The winners’ choices

To answer that question, I’ve looked at the initial draft picks across all five-team leagues, selected out the managers who finished first, and then added up how many times each position was selected in each round.

The order below is the order that maximised the overall frequency among league-winning managers:

  • 1 – MID
  • 2 – MID
  • 3 – FWD
  • 4 – DEF
  • 5 – GK
  • 6 – DEF
  • 7- FWD
  • 8 – MID
  • 9 – DEF
  • 10 – MID
  • 11 – MID
  • 12 – DEF
  • 13 – FWD
  • 14 – DEF
  • 15 – GK

The winners go heavy on midfield early, and then don’t return to it until the middle rounds when they go hard again. They also have every position covered at least once in the first five rounds. They also pick a forward early, one in the middle, and one towards the end.

In many ways, these selections reflect how you might allocate a budget in the regular FPL game: a few expensive attacking players, a couple of premium defenders and a premium goalkeeper, and the rest made up with budget slot-fillers, and a clear leaning towards a 3-5-2 formation. The optimal selection, however, picks each position at more regular intervals.

In terms of how often managers made these choices, 74% of winning managers go for a midfielder in round one and 42% go for their second midfielder in round two. At the other end of the draft, 57% waited until round 15 to pick up their second goalkeeper and 43% waited until round 14 to fill in their fifth defender slot, with 25% of fourth defenders taken in round 12. The managers clearly have their early slots and late slots pre-determined in terms of positional coverage, and play the middle rounds a bit more by ear.

My conclusions

The data leaves me pondering a choice between following the wisdom of other winning managers or blindly following the data and seeing what happens.

The reality is that I love the idea of just going with what the numbers say but I’ll get to draft day and talk myself out of picking Jose Sa as my second keeper in round 10 over snapping up James Ward-Prowse as my fourth midfielder, and the experiment will be ruined.

But even in that scenario, I’ll take comfort from both my own lived experience that there really isn’t that much difference between the totals scored by round four picks and round 12 picks, and that even the very worst initial drafts in the league are recoverable with good transactions over the season.

    In a 541
    A) Robbo, Rashford, Jesus
    B) Dalot (or other 4.5), Bailey/Neto, Haaland

I'm assuming with option B you will have to play Dalot and Bailey/Neto?

If so I'd be tempted with A

I'm in a similar-ish position as I have a 5-4-1 currently my premiums are Salah and either KDB/Son. The only downside to having Jesus up front (and two fodder forwards) is that bringing in Kane or Haaland becomes quite tricky especially if you don't want to lose Jesus

        Exact same position as me!

However if I drop Grealish to odegaard or martinelli to cover Jesus’ points, then I can have 5.0/5.5 def and Bailey playing to

        Think I’ve mastered it:

        Raya
        TTA, Cancelo, Zinchenko, Trippier, Dalot
        Salah, Son, Rashford, Martinelli
        Haaland

Odegaard will score the amount of points he will score, whether you have Martinelli or not. Maybe you can explain why having Martinelli affects Odegaard in your FPL team?

          1. TanN
            • 3 Years

Because neither will score lots of points, but both are very good options in their own right due to their price. However why have two from arsenal at a similar price point, could have Rashford and Martinelli instead for example. Spread the risk. Ultimately if Arsenal were to lose 1-0 then the most either player would get is 2 points. If United were to win 1-0 and Rashford got an assist then it is more points. If Arsenal don't perform then two of your eleven are wasted with 1/2/3 pointers. It's point maximisation.

Just as below: why are you biased towards a negative Arsenal result (and positive United result)? What if it's the other way around (which is partly the expectation based on choosing Martinelli and/or Odegaard in the first place!) Seems quite unfair 😆 Maximisation would be picking the two players you think will get the most points. 'Spreading the risk' is suboptimal

It was purely an example Deulofail!!

I'm a Manchester city fan so calling me biased for saying that man u might win 1-0 is ludicrous!!

Tell you what, if your so opinionated on the topic then get Odegaard and Martinelli yourself. Do it. And prove it to me. What's your team looking like, eh? Why do you not have odegaard and Martinelli? Why do you most likely have two Liverpool players? Bias?

After all this was Kings questions...

If they do better then expected then you can transfer someone in. But even so I wouldn't want Odegaard and Martinelli as two of my possible three arsenal options. Look at Zinchenko, White, Tomi (when fit) or Saka!!

Jesus is the best arsenal pick closely followed by an arsenal defender, closely followed by a cheap midfielder EITHER Odegaard OR Martinelli

Your logic should exclude you from getting Saka or Zinchenko. You're picking and choosing when to apply it. I can only assume the reason you wouldn't want both Martinelli and Odegaard is actually more about not wanting Odegaard, because you can't applying your eggs-in-basket theory for other Arsenal players.

I do have an Arsenal triple up at the minute: Zinchenko, Martinelli and Jesus.

                    My reasoning is as follows:

                    Zinchenko...
Well priced at 5.0, likely to start with Tierney unfit, likely to play an attacking fullback role and even in midfield. Therefore potential for CS and attacking returns.

                    Martinelli...
I needed a good midfielder for 6.0 or less and I think he is the best option in the price bracket, will have more minutes than other options and likelier to return.

                    Jesus...
In 60%+ of peoples teams, proved be can score in the Arsenal set up in pre season, a nice price too

I personally could not justify wasting 2/5 of my midfield slots on what is essentially the same player - a mid priced/chela midfielder who will get lots of minutes

No because with a defender they could still come away with a clean sheet even if the attack has been limp

I've had this argument many times, sometimes you just have to give up and let people worry about 'coverage' rather than maximising points.

Despite not appreciating the way Deulofail likes to gratuitously attack me on this site, I reluctantly have to admit I agree with him on this point. The game is simpler than some people make it out to be - I just pick the players I think will score most points. If they're 2 midfielders in the same team, so what? Should I choose a lesser player just because they're in a different team? No. That's why I see no logic in this notion of 'coverage'. One poster says it "spreads the risk". That's true enough, but that just means you'd rather get steady mediocre scores every week than the chance of sometimes low scores to get sometimes high scores. Ultimately, over the season, your total will be higher for having the better players rather than one with poorer fixtures from poorer teams because 'coverage'.
There are many ways to play the game; however, I think it's useful to recognise when our choices are based on emotional or psychological reasons rather than strict logic.

yeah, I think people look at the PL fixture difficulty ratings and see swathes of green for Arsenal, but playing against Crystal Palace, for example, isn't always an easy game.

I don't know, their attacking movement was a joy to watch at times last year (thinking around the time of the City game in particular) & Jesus looks like enhancing that. Only really came unstuck with injuries to key players & Saka getting fatigued. Can set UEL to one side for now

    A-Ramsdale/Mendy & Rashford
    B-Ederson & Neto/6m mid

    Ramsdale
    Taa James Cancelo Dalot
    Salah Diaz Rashford Martinelli
    Jesus Kane

Option B would leave me with .5m to maybe upgrade elsewhere ie Dalot to a 5m defender,

Hello chaps. Here we go again!

    Pickford
    TAA Cancelo Trippier Justin (N.Williams)
    Salah Grealish Saint-Max (Neto Andreas)
    Jesus Antonio Haaland

Any thoughts on this? I figure Neto comes on for Grealish during Pep roulette. Not much chat about Pickford as a 4.5 option, fixtures are great after GW1 and he always gets save points. Haven't seen many teams with Antonio, seems well priced.

The Dier Ederson combo could not be more boring with only CS points, but for 10.5 you 38 games and access to 30-40 clean sheets

True but you won't own them for 38GWs, and clean sheets aren't the only route to points. Sorry to state the obvious.

Is it worth spending 1m more for 0-1 PPM more on the GK slot? You're also looking for streaks in defence, not just attack, and GKs are typically expected to get fewer CSs at the start of the season (more goals are scored; less predictability). Maybe a defender with goal threat would be better than one with basically none. And/or that 1m could be invested in somewhere you expect to see a shorter-term streak in attack?

      These are my thoughts!

All true, but I would counter that with predictability

Dier and Ederson being nailed at their base prices (base prices for nailed links into top 3 defences). 15-20 clean sheets is a very achievable and predictable outcome

        1. Deulofail

You just can't compare GK to outfield positions; they have different routes to points and you can't sub one for the other. Base price for GKs is 4.0. Nailed GKs, 4.5m. Looking for 'routes' into certain defences is the same as 'cover', which is something I can't personally get behind. Good luck with that!

Defensive cover is far more relevant than attacking cover, but all good points. Chewing the fat

    Non Kane/Haaland draft:

    4.5
    Robbo Cancelo Zinc 5.0
    KdB Salah Grealish Martinelli
    Vardy Martial
    (4.0 DaSilva Neco 4.5)

Grealish + Martinelli could also be Kulu + Bailey

nice! I'd be tempted to make the 5.0 defs 4.5 ones and turn Grealish into an 8m mid - normally wouldn't advise this but United/Arsenal/Wolves have decent options there, not to mention with an injury or two a Spurs 4.5 wingback

    Morning all,

Would you downgrade Ramsdale to a 4.5m (probably Sanchez) in order to get Bailey as 5th mid? Currently on Andreas/ DaSilva as bench fodder under 4 4 2 but having Bailey for Bournmouth is tempting, which would mean Dalot on the bench and playing 3 5 2 for the opener.

    Cheers.

People say this but with the great budget enablers we've got I can see a premium + an enabler outscoring two mid-priced players this year. Balance is overrated

There are doubts with the enablers in this team already. Personally a lot of the value priced mids and defence can match premium picks - prefer to have a wider spread of upside

Fulham and Bournemouth will be this season's Norwich and Watford. Plenty of competition for that last spot though, with all the suspects mentioned above potentially in the mix. I think it could be between Everton and Southampton myself.

Brentford will be in trouble too. Forest signing 12 players doesn't mean they'll instantly all gel together. Will take time for them to adapt to the league. Can see them struggling also.

Yes, I think he will. I’m assuming you’d probably captain Haaland a fair bit more than Robbo as well so worth factoring in

That’s true but will also have Salah & Son

If Haaland stays fit he'll possibly be the best point scorer this year. I'm thinking around 250p for him

            Interesting

I think son, KDB, Salah have the advantage with midfielders getting more points than strikers

Have you ever watched Haaland? If he stay fit he will score tons and if you don’t cap him you’ll plummet down the rankings IMO

If you don't think an 11.5m player is going to get 200 points, he shouldn't be an 'issue'. He should be a solid 'no'.

Tough comparison. I'd expect Haaland PPG to be higher, even before accounting for captaincy, but depending on fitness Robbo could outscore him overall

Think I’m very happy with my squad now subject to any further news.

What would you do with a spare 0.5m please?

        A) RAN/Jansson -> Gabriel
        B) Andreas -> Bailey (could rotate with RAN/Jansson)
        C) keep it in the bank

          A is starting, B sub?
Gabriel is a nice upgrade but 0.5m in the bank is very handy. If these are all subs then definitely C

Yes exactly mate. A’s a starter, B a sub. Thanks!

Been tinkering with a one premium option this morning and getting a much better overall score on the RMT tool with no kane or haaland. Definitely tempting

Shall I get Trent (already have robbo)

Should I get Odegaard (already have Saka and martinelli)

Can Foden cover kdb and haaland?

Ignore me just trying to trigger Deulofail

Wouldn't that crowd out other good MID picks from other teams (Liverpool, City, Tottenham, Chelsea, United).

Jesus and Zinchenko are very good value.

I have those two and Saliba in my team.

That said, I think my wife told me that she has Martinelli in hers.

If you really want an Arsenal MID, why not Jesus, Martinelli, Zinchenko or Jesus, Odegaard, Saliba?
