FPL team guides: Crystal Palace – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

We continue our team-by-team guides with Crystal Palace, seeing what their players have to offer.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

FPL points predictions for Gameweek 3 and beyond 3

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals scored5010th
Shots41216th
Shots in the box3019th
Shots on target147=11th
Big chances6112th
Expected goals (xG)54.628th

The mid-table finish of Patrick Vieira’s debut campaign as head coach matches the general rank for attacking statistics.

15 teams pulled off more shots but that’s only because the Eagles attempted the fewest from outside the box (111), with Vieira seemingly pushing his side to be patient and less wasteful. As a result, they come ninth for shots inside the box and eighth for expected goals (xG).

Palace finished just one point short of their highest ever 38-game Premier League total, while Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) had his best top-flight campaign for goals scored (14) and FPL points (150).

Vieira’s biggest task over the summer was to replace the excellent loanee Conor Gallagher (£6.0m), whose fantastic first half of the season encouraged parent club Chelsea to keep him around this time.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded467th
Clean sheets126th
Shots conceded4435th
Shots in the box conceded2675th
Shots on target conceded1445th
Big chances conceded452nd
Expected goals conceded (xGC)46.735th

Palace’s underlying defensive numbers were outstanding in 2021/22.

For the Eagles to rank fifth over the whole season for conceding attempts, shots on target and shots in the box – whilst having the second-best record for allowing big chances – is both surprising and a great indication of Vieira’s impact at Selhurst Park.

Defensive solidity allowed some big wins to take place against the league’s best, with 3-0 home wins over Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal bettered by a 2-0 victory away to champions Manchester City. In fact, the Eagles have the honour of being the only team that Pep Guardiola’s side failed to score past in either meeting.

Palace’s back four also provided 12 attacking returns, thanks to the four assists of Joachim Andersen and two goals of Marc Guehi. Of all defenders priced at £4.5m, these two are the highest points scorers from last season.

OPENING FIXTURES

The nasty run of opening fixtures will likely prevent FPL managers from investing in Zaha and such a strong defence.

Trips to Liverpool and Man City take place in the first four matches, placing Palace bottom of our Season Ticker for the first six Gameweeks and they continue to be until Gameweek 13.

One plan might be to wait until the fifth outing, as the ticker ranks Palace as third-best between then and the World Cup break that follows Gameweek 16.

Palace’s run from Gameweeks 10-18 sees them face all three newly promoted clubs plus Leeds, Wolves, Southampton and Everton.

How many 'punts' are people going with?

I have Mahrez, who should start but is a bit of a rotation risk, and Zaha, who I feel will be awesome this season.

Err, that's hard to say, before the season starts :o)

Currently got Grealish, which I'll put in 'punt' category (2nd season, Sterling has left), but I've also got Sancho and Maddison as MIDs, which other people would class as punts... And Nunez... Oh, lets say 2.3 :o)

You’ll have a huge amount of money on the bench! No need for Johnson at all if playing 442.

Mahrez said as far as he knows he's still on them but he doesn't think it's a big deal and he isn't so selfish that he wouldn't pass them over. I think he may have stayed on them at least for a while but given his miss against West Ham at the end of last season combined with Haaland's solid recent record, I think they'll go to Haaland

To be honest, Zinchenko is more of an FPL asset covering for Tierney as he would be covering for Xhaka. With the depth Arsenal have up front, he likely won't be that far forward as a midfielder

If Ronaldo does indeed move away, I can see us looking at another top-notch season from Bruno as well. He's a 200+ player when everything revolves around him.

Are the chances of a 6-7m asset to be worth 8-9m more than a 8m asset to be worth 10m?

Most of last year's 6-7m assets are priced 8-8.5m this year

    1. TheBiffas
      • 3 Years
      1 year, 9 months ago

That's why you start with the cheapies

    2. Runnerboy31
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member
      • 2 Years
      1 year, 9 months ago

You could think of prices being set based on how much doubt there is over:

      1. Minutes
      2. Quality of the individual
      3. Quality of the team
      4. Ability to demonstrate genuine captaincy potential

The likes of Saka, Bowen etc eliminated doubts over 2 or the first 3 arguably last season.

For them to get another £2m price hike they need to prove number 4 which is arguably a much harder job.

So in short yes I think it’s easier for 6m to prove they are 8m than 8m to prove they are 10m - very few players are trusted as genuine captaincy options

      1. R.C
        • 6 Years
        1 year, 9 months ago

Thanks, agreed. Not a single 8-9m asset had a 2m price increase last year. A player like that is someone like Salah when he joined Pool (1st year) or KDB when he was priced 9.5m. They are rare.

Can Diaz score 200-225 points to prove value?

Better to start with cheapies from good teams

        1. Runnerboy31
          • Fantasy Football Scout Member
          • 2 Years

Agreed picking the right cheapies can be goldust but picking the wrong ones and then chasing the good ones (that might then prove to wrong ones) can really hurt you.

A Saka and Diaz may not prove to be underpriced but as long as they are correctly priced they will still notably outperform all but the best cheapies - therefore it’s not obvious you want cheapies early on, unless your certain they are the right ones.

As an example of what I mean - start of last season Benrahma exploded and Bowen did absolutely nothing. Yes you could have started with Benrahma and then guessed the right time to get Bowen but equally you could have started with Bowen, missed some prices and then bought Benrahma and by the time you’ve realised the mistake been priced out of Bowen. In which case you would’ve been better to start with a more expensive player let things settle down and then move straight to Bowen

Don't fancy it. Already think they're likely to concede in the first 2 games and to me Trippier is by far the best 5m def available. The fixtures after the first 2 are good but doubling up is certainly too much for me

    3. Fish up a tree
      • 2 Years

Zinchenko as he will be given license to bomb forward as White or Tomi at RB dont have the attacking threat & they then drop into a back 3 to provide cover.

This happened against Chelsea in the preseason game (see YouTube highlights) & Arteta tried it last season with Tierney but Zinchenko is a level up offensively.

I can see him getting involved in a lot of attacking situations & expect assists & the odd goal. He could also be deployed at LCM when Tierney is back which will give him even more chance of getting attacking returns.

Yet Tierney rarely delivers attacking returns in the same role. And somehow I feel its not a failing of his, but maybe more structural/tactical thing...? I don't know, just a hunch really. Open to being proved wrong

        1. Fish up a tree
          • 2 Years

Tierney had a period of 3 assists & a goal,in 5 games after he came back into the team but then Tomi got injured so defensive balance to a back 3 was lost & then Tierney got injured himself!

Zinchenko is a much better attacker so he will suit this system perfectly.

Each to there own but I’m on Zinchenko

      2. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 3 Years

Cheers for the info. I had Tierney during his good spell last season but also held on a little after when returns and attacking potential dwindled. I've seen suggestions Zinchenko may suit the position more as Tierney prefers to overlap and that didn't really work with Martinelli too often as he often ignored his runs and preferred to cut in, while Zinchenko is able to both overlap and underlap but seems to prefer the latter. I do have a 4.5 def on the bench too so rotation (as long as it's not very regular) can be managed.

Prefer Gabriel still. Zinchenko might get shunted around between LB and, maybe, Xhaka's role, and could see more rotation. I think Gabriel's proven set piece threat & tendency to accumulate bonus outweighs any speculative assist potential for Zinchenko

Cheers for the input, Gabriel definitely gives more certainty of appearances and certainly seems good for aerial threat and bps. The unknowns over Zinchenko feel like it should be an easy call but I guess I'm just wondering if he'll fit into a different tactical role they haven't had with Tierney / Xhaka

True. But also why don't you attract the crazies like I did when I said the same thing??

Don't think it's crazy at all, I think he'll do very well there and that 7-7.5 bracket fits a lot of forwards that are likely to end up with something around 10-15 returns which is at least what I'd expect from him

Cristiano Ronaldo has reiterated his desire to leave MUFC, with Sporting explored as possible new club.

CL goals record v Lionel Messi seen as motivating factor.

Antony ruled out at this stage. Talks over Benjamin Sesko but Salzburg reluctant to sell.

B is a lot more likely to play every game when fit, & IF Wolves do actually score, it'll probably involve him somewhere.

Very good. Nice to see people taking the sensible choice of Haaland over Kane the defensive midfielder

Everton could have had Maxwel Cornet for £17.5m but paid more for Dwight McNeil 😆

    Okay balance or too punty?

    Ederson
    TAA - Cancelo - Trippier
    Salah - Martinelli - Grealish - Bailey
    Kane - Jesus - Martial

Jonny first sub can rotate with Bailey/Tripps after decent first couple fixtures. Also 0.5ITB

Haaland plays for a significantly better team and has better stats per 90 and actually plays as a striker unlike Kane who plays as a quarterback and is far further back than Son

    Haaland Jesus

    Ward Andreas Neco Archer

    B
    Ederson
    TAA Cancelo James Gabriel

Is it stupid to have Salah in my FPL team but not captain him to often in favour of other options like Kane, Haaland, Son etc. I find it a bit boring captaining Salah but think that when he hauls it would soften the rank drop.

      • 14 Years

No not a bad idea, stick the cap on him now and then though 🙂

good idea haha! Most of the time differential captains have screwed me over but triple captaining Havertz in the DGW was such a good feeling

I was Buzzing with my lewis dunk triple captain only for him to get -1 or something stupid. Makes the game more enjoyable

Atleast it wasn't Duffy. For GW1 I'm thinking of captaining Kulusevski despite the fact Moura will probably sub-on at 70 mins. He's low ownership and even if he doesn't do well atleast I'd have high owned players like TAA, Cancelo, Haaland and Salah to avoid a horrendous 5.5M rank start

Do what ever will make the game more enjoyable for you. If you enjoy being maverick more than you dread red arrows then go for it

I’ve been set on Diaz since the game opened, but now I’ve been tempted by Robbo, so it’s:

    Gabriel, Diaz
    Or
    Robbo Martinelli

For what it’s worth, I have Ramsdale, Trent, Salah and Jesus already.

A is safer for rotation. So If your bench isn't solid then deffo A

      You can have both
      Trent, Robbo and Diaz.
No need for Salah as you have great City and Spurs captains
