FPL pre-season: Conte on Perisic and Doherty’s fitness

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 0-1 ROMA

Match highlights

Spurs concluded their pre-season preparations with a narrow friendly defeat against Jose Mourinho’s Roma on Saturday.

However, Antonio Conte will take positives from the loss, with new signing Ivan Perisic impressing in his first start for the club.

The Croatian went close to scoring on three occasions and was a real threat in the final-third, although Conte did stress that he still needs further time to become “…the Ivan Perisic I know”.

“He’s an important player because he’s really good. He moves forward, good in one v ones, and then he can use both feet and he was before a winger which us why he’s good in one v one. But he has to continue to work because at this moment he’s not the Ivan Perisic I know. That is normal though, but I’m happy because he reduced the time to recover from his injury.” – Antonio Conte on Ivan Perisic

Fellow wing-back Matt Doherty (£5.0m) didn’t feature against Rangers last time out but started here and had a header tipped onto the woodwork before he was flagged for offside.

He also took up some encouraging attacking positions, but like Perisic, still needs to build up his fitness having only recently returned from a knee injury.

Doherty lasted 67 minutes before he was replaced by Emerson Royal (£5.0m), with new-signing Djed Spence (£4.5m) an unused substitute.

“It was the same (as Perisic) for Matthew (Doherty). I hope to see him like last season and now he’s working and he’s struggling. We need to have patience. We need to give time for these players to be really fit. In this moment we have two players, Perisic and Doherty, they have to continue to work and reach the peak of fitness because after a long injury they are struggling a lot. We need to have patience, but today it was positive to give them a lot of time to play again for Matthew and Ivan.

It will be very important for us (to get Perisic and Doherty fit), but then we have Sessegnon, that is a guarantee, also Emerson is good. There is the new player Spence. He is a guy who has to work a lot, because to go into Tottenham it’s different in the Premier League with Tottenham but in the end I’m happy.” – Antonio Conte on his options at wing-back

In a game of few clear-cut chances, a Roger Ibanez header proved the difference for Roma, but Harry Kane (£11.5m) was perhaps a little unfortunate not to return.

The England forward had the ball in the net just before the break only for the goal to be ruled out for offside, missed a late headed chance, while he also should have been awarded a penalty in the second half.

Elsewhere, Richarlison (£8.5m) also made an impact after replacing Son Heung-min (£12.0m), while Ben Davies (£5.0m) was back on the bench after injury.

“Richarlison I liked a lot the way he impacted the game. We need this type of player. Richarlison to start the game or go into the game, he can have a big impact. For us it’s very important. We need him behind Sonny, also Kane and Kulusevski. He is an important player because we have a lot of games to play.” – Antonio Conte on Richarlison

Tottenham Hotspur XI (3-4-2-1): Lloris (Forster 67); Romero, Dier, Sanchez (Lenglet 46); Doherty (Royal 67), Bissouma (Bentancur 46), Hojbjerg, Perisic (Sessegnon 75); Kulusevski (Moura 67), Son (Richarlison 67); Kane

NOTTINGHAM FOREST 1-1 VALENCIA

  • Goals: Johnson
  • Assists: Awoniyi

Match highlights

Nottingham Forest rounded off their pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw against Valencia, with Jesse Lingard impressing on his debut.

The summer signing – deployed in a no. 10 role behind Brennan Johnson (£6.0m) and Sam Surridge (£5.0m) – showed glimpses of what he has to offer, taking on several shots whilst also being central to much of Forest’s attacking play.

“Thank you to the fans for a warm reception. I really, really appreciate it. I’m going to do my best for Nottingham Forest, don’t worry about that – 110% each game.” – Jesse Lingard

Brennan Johnson’s goal on 83 minutes ensured it finished even at 1-1, with substitute and record signing Taiwo Awoniyi (£6.0m) grabbing the assist.

And the pair almost combined again a few minutes later, only for Valencia’s ‘keeper to deny the Welsh forward getting a second.

Elsewhere, Neco Williams (£4.0m) looked lively in the final-third, while Jack Colback (£4.5m) started in central midfield alongside Lewis O’Brien (£5.0m).

That’s because Ryan Yates (£5.0m) has suffered another injury and is set to be out for a couple of weeks.

Nottingham Forest XI (3-4-1-2): Henderson; Worrall, Cook, McKenna; Williams, Colback, O’Brien, Toffolo; Lingard (Cafu 77); Johnson, Surridge (Awoniyi 62)

I can't seem to decide on my final defender spot (rest is TAA, Cancelo, Trippier and Saliba). Had 5m for it, first had Zinchenko but was considering Gabriel, then nearly considered Perisic instead, then thought of adding in another 4.5. Only decided on Saliba earlier over Fofana but likelihood is I'll start him (Fofana was going to rotate in and out) so I've now moved that spot to Neco to allow me to get rid of Colback and bring in Aaronson again. May change my mind again but I had him there for quite a while before and with the way the template changed to eventually being very close to my team I actually ended up having basically no punts at all (and coming from someone that captained Elyounoussi in one GW last season, that's weird).

Aaronson could well be the real differential pick. Going way under the radar with all the Neto and Bailey talk. Go with your gut.

Cheers, Leeds do look a bit mixed but they seem to be looking for goals a lot and gives the fixtures I'm definitely hopeful there. The choice right now is essentially:

        Aaronson + Saliba + benched 4m def
        Or
        4.5 mid + Perisic + benched 4m def

The 4.5 mid would have to play every week which is the problem with the latter plan, I was initially happy to start Dasilva some weeks but it seems like Jensen will be nailed while he'll rotate with Baptiste so that's an issue. This way feels a tad more balanced at least.

Would you change anything about this lot?

    Ramsdale
    TAA, Robertson, Cancelo, Trippier
    Salah, Mount, Martinelli, Bailey
    Kane, Jesus

    Bench: Andreas, Williams/Patterson, Archer

Like it...I am on 4.5+ Perisic over Rams + Trippier but I think the latter might be better

      Jesus Mount Cancelo Trippier (442)
      OR
      KDB Reece Walker Dalot (541)

I have the latter. Yours is probably more flexible.

Trippier has much more attacking threat and can see a huge haul in GW1. I prefer the attacking defenders.

Nothing wrong with Trips - I was on him until very recently but I just can’t look past a city triple up against Bournemouth at home. If City persist with this double pivot approach I think Walker could be a bit more attacking than recent seasons.

Get your logic for sure. I also don’t want to lock down a City stop on Walker as can see myself having something like Cancelo, Haaland and Foden or Mahrez.

Identical to mine! So I like it.

Still not 100% on the 8m mid. Kinda want City attack so looking at Mahrez, but he didn’t look great in the community shield. Are you set on Mount? Reasoning over the others? Obviously Saka and Diaz no longer options with 3 from each team already.

Can't say for sure but they certainly seem to be goal hungry. He's impressed in all of his games so far and his assist for Bamford's goal was superb today (along with a brilliant finish)

Yeah, not keen on the threemium’s I’ve seen. It’s hard to suggest much with so much invested in that extra striker unless you’re willing to come down on that.

There’s a lot of good 5.0-6.0s and a lot of good 8.0s. What there aren’t a lot of is 6.5-7.5s. Which makes the threemium more possible.

I’d still rather have my team with cancelo and robbo and one 8.0 MID than an extra 11.5m FWD however.

    Current team:

    Sanchez
    TAA-Robbo-Perisic-Cancelo
    Salah-Bailey-Martinelli-Kulusevski
    Haaland-Jesus

    Steele-N.Williams-A.Pereira-Plange

    Plan:

GW1: Salah captain, Haaland vice, no Kane - Kulu & Perisic/Doherty as Spurs cover
GW2: Haaland captain, Salah vice, if possible save a transfer
GW3: Review and assess and use a transfer
GW4: Atleast 3-4 possible captains, possibly a hard decision

Pretty much. Mbeumo scored last 2 friendlies. I think he's as worth a spot as Toney

Just can’t get away from 5 defenders.

City/Pool will keep 18-20 clean sheets.

Imagine a 6.0 striker that’s on for that many goals.

    Pretty settled on this now.

    Ramsdale 4.0
    TAA Robbo Walker Botman (Neco)
    Salah Kulu Saka Bailey (Andreas)
    Haaland Jesus (Archer)

    0.5itb.

    Any touch ups?

I myself like Bowen over Saka/Kulu, but I think I'm pretty much alone here. I'd consider Botman to Trippier instead of keeping itb too. But it is a fine team, sure.

Hi all……getting back into the game and registered my team, but noticed my mini-league that I have managed for five years is gone…….I’m sure this happened to others…is there a solution?

Log in on laptop to reactivate leagues, that's what I found. I didn't have the option to do so while on phone

Not nailed but should play the majority unless Cucurella signs.

    Ramsdale
    Trent Cancelo James Perisic
    Salah Diaz Rashford Bailey
    Kane Jesus

    4.0 Andreas Neco Taylor

Bailey too risky with this thin bench?

I think Bailey is fine atm, just need an exit plan if he gets injured/dropped, also when fixtures turn (maybe? might just play him anyway), plus he is pretty template on here. Getting another 8mil mid for Rashford would be something to look at imo.

Could drop James to a 4.5 to upgrade Rashford to a 8.0, but frankly I think Rashfor /is/ a 8.0 player... just on sale right now.

Looks good at the back tho I prefer 4/4/2.

      I have Son over Kane:

      Meslier
      TAA/Cancelo/Perisic/Gabriel
      Salah/Son/Diaz/Bailey
      Jesus/Toney

      Klaesson/Neco/Pereira/Taylor

Surely Saka outscores Toney..thats the main difference in these. Also think Robbo is a better liverpool pick than Diaz.

I think I'm settled on this team any thoughts?

    TAA/Cancelo/Perisic/Gabriel
    Salah/Son/Diaz/Bailey
    Jesus/Toney

    Klaesson/Neco/Pereira/Taylor

    0.5m ITB.

Not sure on Toney tbh. Missing Eriksen sucks for his stats. What about Wilson at that price bracket?

      Otherwise looks great!

Solid team but would try to get Saka or Mount instead of Toney. Maybe Perisic > 5.0

I'm pretty tempted by 3 Arsenal after preseason. Initial thinking was to just get 2 and assess a 3rd after Palace. I'm now thinking that with them playing Friday night if one goes large then their price might rise before we even get to see the Sunday games? The reverse of people selling before Sunday doesn't seem as likely. Overthinking much?

Not 3, but double up with Martinelli and Jesus is okay because you get nothing if Jesus brings points as everyone has him. With Martinelli, you materialize their good match and goals.

Saka is the one to get imo..arsenal should get a good number of pens with saka, jesus, and mart dribbling ability

Hm that's a good point, never really considered it. But he is just too expensive for me, would rather go for Mount.

And don't Saka and Martinelli share pens?

They did in the past so its still unclear..sharing pens is usually not a good strategy or very common.

If it was 100% Saka was on pens I would probably splash the cash - but at the moment it still seems there's a chance that who wins it takes it?

I wouldn't be surprised if its 100% Saka now. But it's still a wait and see.

I'm likely to have Jesus, Martinelli and a 4.5 defender to have as 1st sub and target their gw3-5 games.

Saka does look really good right now but think Martinelli + 2m is better value
