FPL team guides: Manchester United – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

We continue our team-by-team guides with Manchester United, seeing what their players have to offer.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series.

It was a disappointing follow-up to Manchester United’s second-placed finish of 2020/21. Fans were back in stadiums again, big money had been spent on Jadon Sancho (£7.5m) whilst Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.5m) returned to the club after 12 years away.

Yet manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left in November, following a 4-1 defeat at newly-promoted Watford, as the Red Devils made it five seasons without a trophy.

Under the stewardship of Solskjaer, caretaker Michael Carrick and interim boss Ralf Rangnick, their underlying attacking stats roughly match their sixth-placed ranking, although their 57 goals were bested by seven other teams.

Highlights included the opening day 5-1 win over Leeds United, where Bruno Fernandes (£10.0m) netted a hat-trick, and entertaining 3-2 home wins over Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur – the latter with Ronaldo’s own set of three.

The 37-year-old finished as top scorer with 18 league goals but has barely featured in friendlies, as reports continue to insist that he wants to leave the club immediately.

However, it hasn’t clouded a promising pre-season under new boss Erik ten Hag. Announced with several weeks of 2021/22 to go, he arrived from Ajax with an air of confidence and time to plan a new era for this underachieving giant.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded5713th
Clean sheets8=12th
Shots conceded51112th
Shots in the box conceded32511th
Shots on target conceded18014th
Big chances conceded7513th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)61.3011th

A huge problem for ten Hag to fix is the Man United defence. Ranking in the lower mid-table for allowing attempts, big chances and shots on target, their eight clean sheets were fewer than new boys Brentford and relegated Burnley, worsened only by four others.

Furthermore, there were an embarrassing six occasions where they conceded at least four goals – including against Manchester City, both times versus Liverpool and a May meltdown at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Goalkeeper David De Gea (£5.0m) made the third-most saves and played all 38 matches. Fernandes was the only other to exceed 28 starts.

From an FPL perspective, only Watford totalled fewer defensive goals, with solitary contributions from Harry Maguire (£5.0m) and Raphael Varane (£5.0m). Assists were better, thanks to a combined seven from left-backs Alex Telles (£5.0m) and Luke Shaw (£5.0m).

OPENING FIXTURES

The tougher fixtures against last season’s top five are spread out fairly evenly throughout the early months, meaning ten Hag’s side never gets a truly good or bad run of fixtures.

This is backed by our Season Ticker, which ranks fixtures for both difficulty and relative difficulty. The latter constantly keeps Man United as sixth-best for the opening four, six, eight and ten encounters.

Gameweek 1 can see them gain revenge on Brighton for the 4-0 loss, with Liverpool soon back to attempt another 5-0.

    A) Ederson - Cancelo - Jesus

    OR

    B) Ward - Walker - Haaland

Can easily have Saka as my £8.0m mid, and already have Martinelli. No other city attackers at present.

    Thoughts appreciated

Thoughts on how best to spend this 2.5itb?

    Ward/Iversen*
    TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, Perisic, Cash
    Salah, Saka, Mount, Baily,
    Jesus.
    (Alvarez, Andreas, Greenwood)

    - *4.0 keepers I'm still very conflicted about.
    - I'm set on 5 atb. Everything points to the fact that defenders are the best value in the game. All 5 have big upside in terms of attacking returns with decent fixtures too.
    - Bailey could be a gem at 5.0. Playing an attacking role in a decent team against two of the worse defences in the league in the first 2 matches. He had a big reputation coming to PL last season but was always injured. He's worth a risk for the first 2.
    - Mount I think should be central to most of the good going through Chelsea. Chelsea are going a little under the radar after a poor preseason but are still a top 4 team with decent (if not great) fixtures.
    - Saka I think is still a step above Martinelli in terms of pens, set pieces and minutes so I'm hoping he's worth the extra 2.0mil.
    - Alvarez on the bench. Bit differential but I think he is going under the radar with Haaland signing taking the limelight. Alvarez has looked excellent in a Man City shirt so far. I think he'll get decent minutes rotating with Mahrez.

Without touching the onemium decision, I would go Iversen to Ramsdale (+1), Cash to James (+1), Bailey to Neto (+0.5), Alvarez to Mbeumo/Johnson (–0.5) which leaves 0.5 ITB for flexibility

I think Alvarez is a waste of a spot. Downgrading him to Mbeumo/Johnson means you get a playing player

That sounds very interesting, thanks for the input! Yeah if I have my sensible hat on, Alvarez won't stay. I also like Ramsdale in goal.

I'm actually eying Cash->James for GW3 already. Just think Cash has such good opening fixtures and he is so attacking. Waiting a few GWs will give a chance to assess the Chelsea defence and see where James is playing too.

      Iverson to Ederson
      Bailey to Martinelli

Solid keeper, triple Arsenal attack to differentiate from everyone who owns 1 or 2 of them

Yeah the keeper upgrade is likely going to happen.

Bailey to Martinelli might be a good move for GW3. I don't like tripling up away to Palace and home to Leicester.

Nice! I'm stubbornly sticking to not going with Kane/Haaland so far, but going with the Leicester GKs probably makes them more gettable.

For a long time i was going for Jesus and Wilson as my forwards, but going without Son/Kane is very risky and just asking for trouble. They can go on an absolute tear.

Yeah definitely. I remember 2 seasons back when I didn't own them (but everyone else did), one assisted the other for a goal and my rank went down like 700k places!

I do think this season especially it's very hard to have them all, and a small part of me wonders are Spurs going to score less than people expect this season.

      B. It's the 4 I have. Ramdsdale and Saka for the opening fixtures. Saka IMO has a higher ceiling than martinelli.

I feel wolves don't score enough for Neto to get goals, plenty of 1-0s and 0-0s whereas Bailey could grab one goal and assists against weaker teams.

James on paper is better than walker but walker city defense is looking stronger than Chelsea, might want to wait and see how Rjames fits in

I'm an athiest and see massive upside in not picking him.
If he blanks in the first three games (entirely feasible) I will be flying high.
I could then bring him in g/w4 and have an edge on all those 73.4% ers. Job done.

LIke it. Obvs risk with Leicester GK situation, and love the Wilson pick, was keen myself but decided against. Given no-one will captain Jesus, it's a calculated risk. I personally prefer a better keeping situation to start and someone else besides Mount but good enough reason to pick them. Go with your gut. Good luck.

    A) Haaland - Robertson - Bailey
    B) Darwin - James - Mahrez

Looking at last year's ppg. Bailey had 2.1 ppg, but I expect that to increase, say up to 3.2 (same as Ramsey last year).
    A) ? + 6.4 + 3.2 = 9.6 + Haaland
    B) ? + 5.4 + 4.8 = 10.2 + Darwin
Still Haaland needs 0.6 ppg more than Darwin to break even. Think B is the better choice?

Mahrez because no other City attacker, already have Mount, Martinelli. No Spurs, but not keen on Kulu, although he had higher ppg than Mahrez last season.

I like Wilson too, but steered away due to Jesus and need to cover Kane/Haaland. He would be the one I would add that I don't have

This is the best i could muster. Rating from 1-10?

    Ward - (Iversen)
    TAA - Robbo - Cancelo - James - Perisic
    Salah - Mount - Saka - Bailey - (Colback)
    Kane - (Archer) - (Plunge)

      8/10.

Perisic and Iversen to 5.0 DF and 4.5 GK and it's a 9/10. Punting against Jesus is bold.

I can't see Jesus outscoring the 8m midfielders. Saka will cover him if not outscore him.
And even if Jesus goes on a tear, his price won't jump because of the ridiculous ownership. Forward hauls aren't nearly as scary as midfield hauls.

Love it but 2 major concerns -

      1. Leicester goalies dont scream clean sheets with those initial fixtures.
      2. If Kane doesn't play, you don't field 11 starters.

I have a very similar team but Sanchez instead of Iversen which means I am unable to get Perisic in defence and have to settle for Neto instead even though both are 5.5

I think Kane plays unless he gets injured. Richarlison will dig into Son's minutes. And if Kane gets injured, there's an easy swap to Haaland.
The Leicester keepers don't have to get cleanies. Schmeichel got a good chunk of points just from saves even though he conceded like 70 goals.

Down to the final details. Leaning heavily toward this draft:

    Sánchez // Ward
Trent Robertson Cancelo James // Williams
Salah Saka Neto Bailey // Andreas
    Haaland Jesus // Archer

Would you make any of these changes?
A: Williams and Bailey ➡️ Jonny and Colback
    B: Haaland ➡️ Kane
    C: no changes
    D: something else

Disagree. The U23’s and that are largely fit. Don’t understand why Alli would play

More effective signing Big Dunc for a couple of weeks until they find a striker.

Dunc could still do a job alright. Looks like they'll sign a striker. DCL reportedly out for a month but could be longer.

I know I’ve seen you post before lol … he’s just dropped off a cliff, I think he’s honestly the most easy avoid player in the game. Such a shame as I agree the ability is there but he just seems to have packed it in.

    Any big problems here?

    Ederson
    Trent Robbo Cancelo James Perisic
    Salah Martinelli Neto
    Jesus Haaland

    Ward - Pereira fodder fodder

Downgrade James/Perisic and get another mid-priced MF instead of £4.5m fodder? Big at the back is popular but I feel your midfield may be a tad light if Martinelli doesn’t fire
