FPL team guides: Manchester United – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

We continue our team-by-team guides with Manchester United, seeing what their players have to offer.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series.

It was a disappointing follow-up to Manchester United’s second-placed finish of 2020/21. Fans were back in stadiums again, big money had been spent on Jadon Sancho (£7.5m) whilst Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.5m) returned to the club after 12 years away.

Yet manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left in November, following a 4-1 defeat at newly-promoted Watford, as the Red Devils made it five seasons without a trophy.

Under the stewardship of Solskjaer, caretaker Michael Carrick and interim boss Ralf Rangnick, their underlying attacking stats roughly match their sixth-placed ranking, although their 57 goals were bested by seven other teams.

Highlights included the opening day 5-1 win over Leeds United, where Bruno Fernandes (£10.0m) netted a hat-trick, and entertaining 3-2 home wins over Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur – the latter with Ronaldo’s own set of three.

The 37-year-old finished as top scorer with 18 league goals but has barely featured in friendlies, as reports continue to insist that he wants to leave the club immediately.

However, it hasn’t clouded a promising pre-season under new boss Erik ten Hag. Announced with several weeks of 2021/22 to go, he arrived from Ajax with an air of confidence and time to plan a new era for this underachieving giant.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded5713th

Shots conceded51112th
Shots in the box conceded32511th
Shots on target conceded18014th

A huge problem for ten Hag to fix is the Man United defence. Ranking in the lower mid-table for allowing attempts, big chances and shots on target, their eight clean sheets were fewer than new boys Brentford and relegated Burnley, worsened only by four others.

Furthermore, there were an embarrassing six occasions where they conceded at least four goals – including against Manchester City, both times versus Liverpool and a May meltdown at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Goalkeeper David De Gea (£5.0m) made the third-most saves and played all 38 matches. Fernandes was the only other to exceed 28 starts.

From an FPL perspective, only Watford totalled fewer defensive goals, with solitary contributions from Harry Maguire (£5.0m) and Raphael Varane (£5.0m). Assists were better, thanks to a combined seven from left-backs Alex Telles (£5.0m) and Luke Shaw (£5.0m).

OPENING FIXTURES

The tougher fixtures against last season’s top five are spread out fairly evenly throughout the early months, meaning ten Hag’s side never gets a truly good or bad run of fixtures.

This is backed by our Season Ticker, which ranks fixtures for both difficulty and relative difficulty. The latter constantly keeps Man United as sixth-best for the opening four, six, eight and ten encounters.

Gameweek 1 can see them gain revenge on Brighton for the 4-0 loss, with Liverpool soon back to attempt another 5-0.

I’m getting closer to settling in this. Yes I know the cheap and cheerful gks are a risk, but I’m willing to take that risk.

    Ward, Ivo
    Taa, Robbo, Cancelo, Trippier, Perisic
    Salah, Mount, Martinelli
    Jesus, Kane

Tried to go template + differential. Have I missed the mark?

    Ramsdale

    TAA - Robbo - Cancelo - Tripper

    Salah - Mahrez - Martinelli - Bailey

    Haaland - Jesus

    (same bench as everyone else)

Anyone else having trouble deciding on a £5M defender?

    Mendy
    Robertson TAA Cancelo 5.0M
    Salah(c) Mount Martinelli Bailey
    Jesus Kane
    (Ward/Iversen Andreas N.Williams Archer)

Currently Walker, but suspect that's a transfer waiting to happen due to rotation.

Gabriel means putting all the eggs in Arsenal basket and I don't like their first two fixtures. But should be good until WC in up to 8 weeks time.

Cash has reliable history and early good fixtures but low ppg so would be an early sell when fixtures turn. Digne is Digne.

Perišić would require downgrading Mendy to a 4.5M keeper. Doherty - don't know if the manager likes him.

Trippier has potential but hot and cold fixtures.

Dias is possible if double Leceister Gk.

(One takeaway from last year is I don't want to be wasting transfers on defenders)

I would get Sanchez as great rotation with Ward and go Perisic. If not Gabriel a good option given early Arsenal fixtures and Palace and Leicester love to concede from set pieces-

      1. Sheffield Wednesday

That's sensible - though Sanchez did nothing for me last season so I swapped him for Ramsdale who proceeded to do even less for the remainder of the season.

I have Cash currently, for his first 2 fixtures. 4 goals last season not to be sniffed at for a cheap defender and he could improve on that this season with an extra year with Gerrard and better players around him. I'm prepared to move him on fairly soon though so not the best long term pick.

I also like Gabriel as I think he has good set piece threat and Arsenal have good CS potential.

Trippier, good option, I just don't like the fixtures at all.

Robertson and Zinchenko is such a huge difference -- Robbo gets a ppg of 6.4. Compare that to Tierney 4.8, may be Zinchenko does better and gets 5.2 and that's wishful thinking. Still, Saka has to score 1.2 ppg more than Martinelli just to break even -- not saying impossible, but it is quite difficult to do so.

If you're doing the Kane to Haaland GW2 move, I'd go Neto over Bailey for his nailedness - you're less likely to need to use a transfer on that spot in the first 6 GWs

I kept that 0.5 as i am not sure which of neto bailey aaronson will do ok.

and like you..i prefer a GK that doesnt make me think twice. Alison was my first cost because at 5.5 i think he is really value. But choosing ederson so that i can have 3 pool outfields...

Apart from Mahrez, who is an obvious high-potential risk, its template and solid.

I'm not sure I'd have Bailey if he's going to be 2nd on the bench. Either play him for his first 2 fixtures or get a 4.5 mid instead imo.

It’s the template team, same as mine. Only decision is wether to go Kane or Haaland really.

Kane GW1. Haaland GW2. Groupthink yesterday was that’s a pointless transfer, may as well start with Haaland. I disagree as I think Kane will outscore Haaland in GW1 and so I’d like the extra points.

    Trent-Walker-Cancelo-Perisic
    Salah(C)-Martinelli-Aaronson-Diaz
    Jesus-Kane

I have copied the template perfectly.

The three least owned players in my first XI are:
    Mount - 10.2%
    Robertson - 12.0%
    Bailey - 13.1%

Rest are above 20% (Martinelli 19.2% -- almost there).

This is my team with 1 up top. I kinda like it...

    Ramsdale

    Cancelo/TAA/James/Perisic

    Salah/Son/Bailey/Diaz/Martinelli

    Jesus.

Am I cornering myself here? So if I want Haaland etc? I had Kane in and no Son for that reason b4 I changed it up a bit.

Kane instead of Son, then Kane > Haaland if you need too. Otherwise you need two transfers to bring Haaland in.

Any consensus on the City midfield or we avoiding all together because of the roulette?

I had Kane + Mahrez but not sure how nailed Mahrez is, so i'm going Haaland + Kulusevski & have to hope Kulusevski doesn't get rotated after GW1.

      C I suppose.

But just find 0.5m and get Robbo, Cancelo, Perisic.
