FPL team guides: Newcastle United – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Our 2022/23 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) team profiles are rattling along at terrifying leg speeds and we’ve now reached Newcastle United.

The Eddie Howe era is all we’re focusing on here as we look at the data from when the current Newcastle boss was appointed, ahead of Gameweek 12 in 2021/22.

From our selection of the best players for the upcoming season to a predicted line-up for Gameweek 1, we’ll dissect the Magpies in detail.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series.

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

Shots33110th
Shots in the box20013th
Shots on target11510th
Big chances3716th
Expected goals (xG)33.6615th

While the above numbers don’t leap off the page, it’s worth noting that the Steve Bruce era finished with Newcastle ranked 18th for shots in the box and 19th for shots on target, xG and big chances.

Howe oversaw a modest upturn in attacking output, without it being a spectacular U-turn.

It’s fair to say that the defensive acquisitions in the winter transfer window had more of a transformative effect than the players further forward, with Chris Wood (£6.0m) a willing target-man but ultimately scoring just two goals after his arrival.

Bruno Guimaraes (£6.0m), ironically not brought in for his goalscoring, was much more of a success, finding the net on five occasions in the run-in. No-one scored as many league goals under Howe as the Brazilian, despite his mid-season arrival, which says a great deal and likely why a winger and a striker remain priority targets.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

GAMEWEEK 12 ONWARDS
TotalRank v other Premier League clubs

Shots conceded3539th
Shots in the box conceded2379th=
Shots on target conceded1098th
Big chances conceded6014th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)40.6610th

An abject Newcastle were in the bottom two for clean sheets, goals conceded, big chances conceded and clean sheets until Howe was appointed.

The defensive improvements were slow and steady, as the struggling Magpies kept just one clean sheet in Howe’s first nine matches in charge.

Some astute January transfer window captures helped turn the ship around, with three-quarters of the backline – Dan Burn (£4.5m), Matt Targett (£5.0m) and Kieran Trippier (£5.0m) – overhauled.

To say it was only Saudi money responsible for the subsequent purple patch is unfair, however, as Howe revitalised the flagging careers of Fabian Schar (£4.5m), Emil Krafth (£4.5m) and laughing-stock-turned-valued-midfield-shield Joelinton (£6.0m).

From Gameweek 24 onwards (after the transfer window had closed), Newcastle were the Premier League’s sixth-best team in the division for minutes per xGC and goals per game conceded. Only three goals were conceded in their final seven matches at St. James’ Park, too.

That should provide encouragement for the new season, then, particularly as the backline has been further strengthened with the capture of Sven Botman (£4.5m) and Nick Pope (£5.0m).

seems that Chelsea is turning into Arsenal, morphing

one is becoming excellent and promising

the other is selling class and buying trash

A or B please? I really want to go A, but is it better to start B and move to A on first WC? Or is it a case of high risk, high reward and I should just go for A?

    A) White, Martinelli, Darwin
    B) Robertson, Saka, Archer

If you go B, will Archer start or do you have a viable bench option to play in front of him?

If you're planning on starting fodder in your first XI then I would go with A

Aaronson would come into my Starting XI and my bench would be Neco, A.Periera and Archer.

I guess you have to sacrifice Jesus and downgrade in mid or def to find the extra 1 mil. I'm happy with Salah, TAA and Robbo as my 3 though.

Wildcard if needed. I'd imagine most will wildcard between gw3-10 anyway

Though if Pool keep clean sheets for most of their first 6 games (which I think they will) then I'll be okay holding onto Robbo until then

        Saka Mbeumo to Jesus, 5.5.

The 2 Leicester keepers is too risky as they could sign a new keeper and force you into a transfer (and you'll have to raise funds to upgrade this position)

No Salah and Jesus is a very dangerous game to play and could leave you far behind and/or forced to use the wildcard earlier than expected.

Mbuemo as your only playing forward is not effective at all considering you'll be up against teams with Jesus Kane and Haaland.

Kulu and Rash feel like punty picks and their minutes are in question

      1. Pukki Party
        • 6 Years

Agree it's risky, can go 4.5 and Trippier to a 4.5 defender. Do you prefer this?

No Salah i agree with. Went a long period last season without him and did well, so might be swayed because of that. I think the game is more fun without him too.

I still think the last few seasons have proven the mids are better options than forwards, if one of Kane/Haaland are on fire i can get them with 2ft.

Agree that Rashford is punty but it's easier for me to imagine him getting back in form after his injury, rather than not. Kulusevski will get subbed but my guess is he will play majority of games, and he's first choise over Moura.

        1. House Frey Wedding Planner
          • 5 Years

A 4.5 keeper and downgrade Trips to a 4.5 defender is a better move for sure.

I understand the No Salah reasons and each to their own. Those reasons do have some merit and KDB/Son are both good alternatives. But considering that both Salah and Jesus are the most owned players by some distance, it feels safer to go with at least one of those two. If one or both nail it then you could be left chasing the pack.

I'm a huge Kulu fan and love what he's brought to this Spurs team. I think Conte will want to find a way to play Richarlison though and Kulu's minutes will be at risk the most.

Can someone explain me how the ownership of a player can affect price drops/rises?

    E.g.:
    Neco Williams (28.1%)
    Patterson (2.8%)

If neco plays 1 or 2 bad games to start with and everybody starts selling him, does that increase the odds of a price drop? I remember a similar thing with Tsimikas last season.

    1. Devos
      • 2 Years

      Secon example:

      But a playing 4.0 defender won’t drop

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years
        1 year, 8 months ago

You're right Devos. A 4m defender can drop but it's usually one who is both highly owned and doesn't play. If Williams picks up one-pointers owners are more likely to keep him on their bench. Same should apply to Andrea's as he will start. Most vulnerable to a price drop is the forward Greenwood.

I think Walker is slightly overlooked at the start of the season. Stones hasn't played in preseason, so Ake to lb and Cancelo to the right is the only option he doesn't play? At 5.0 it's worth the risk, but if you prefer long term good secure option it's Dias.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

Walker might be good for the first 1 or 2 games weeks. But with Stones, Ake, a returning Laporte, a likely new left back looming, he'd be an early transfer out, or at least a constant doubt.

Pretty good but not on pens. Think Forest will score vs Newcastle, in fact, I fancy them to beat Newcastle or a draw but low scoring game, cheap options for the remaining fixtures too.

Surprising how having a 2x4.0 option in goal seems to make a threemium much more viable:

    Ward
    TAA Robbo Jonny Walker
    Salah Martinelli Bailey
    Kane Haaland Jesus

    Iversen Neco Andreas Reed

Plus I get to have Jonny Walker in defence.

Last season was a false start for him but he's had a good pre-season and at the moment things are looking promising. He's dropped from 6.5m to 5m so if he continues his form in the weeks ahead he's thrown in at the weights as they say in horse racing parlance.
