FPL team reveal: Five-time top 1k finisher’s Gameweek 2 plans

With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) 2022/23 underway, we’ll be welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits and Hall of Famers for the new campaign.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Here, five-time top 1k finisher and Deputy Editor Tom Freeman shares his thoughts and transfer plans ahead of Gameweek 2.

... 2

The new FPL season is underway and if you owned Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Erling Haaland (£11.6m) in Gameweek 1, chances are you probably got off to a good start.

Fortunately, I was on the right side of the Haaland/Harry Kane (£11.4m) swing, ending the round on 73 points.

However, as focus now turns to Gameweek 2, here are some observations from the opening weekend that I found interesting, plus my own team and transfer plans.

SALIBA’S IMPRESSIVE DEBUT

Arsenal recorded a clean sheet in their 2-0 win at Crystal Palace on Friday night, with the impressive William Saliba (£4.5m) named man of the match on his first competitive Gunners start.

“You don’t really see that. At 21 years old, debut in the Premier League, against this opponent, against physical players – and resolve that situation the way he has done it. With that composure, with that calmness and with that presence. So big credit to the boy.” – Mikel Arteta on William Saliba

Notably, there is now more depth in Arsenal’s backline, with Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.1m) also joining last season’s main four: Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.5m), Ben White (£4.5m), Gabriel (£5.0m) and Kieran Tierney (£5.0m).

Now manager Mikel Arteta has options, I think their defensive assets will offer real value in 2022/23, especially given their fixture run between Gameweeks 2 and 8.

The full-backs inverted roles mean when the team loses possession, there is space for opposition wingers to exploit, but this new system should at least hand Arsenal more control, something they lacked towards the end of last season.

ANOTHER £4.5M MIDFIELD ENABLER?

Haaland Foden

Took a -4 hit. (Kane, Bailey Out KDB, Archer In)

    GW 2 Team :
    Sanchez
    Taa reece walker trippier
    Salah Kdb Martinelli Andreas
    Jesus Haaland(c).

Good to go? Can do kdb to son for gw3.

Why would you take a hit to bring in a player that you're going to get rid of next week?

Because KDB to son isn't finalised. With the fix city have, can keep kdb till gw 5 even. Its just another option for GW 3 where i can shift kdb to son if required.

Fair enough, still I'd be wary of taking hits for players with such a short-term period in mind if 4GWs is likely the most you'll keep a player for, if you end up taking a hit to move them out then the benefit of having them for that period diminishes even further. Are you captaining him?

Bailey. It's a risk home to Everton but Leeds at Southampton and Newcastle fly to Brighton.

Brighton were loads more effective away last season and struggled for ages at home. Will be interesting to see if they've thrown that off.

Bailey, can't bench Aaronson against that Southampton side and Trippier looked good against Forest, a lot of neat passes and Newcastle look solid, he was on for 2 bonus until Wilson's goal

I'd be thinking of playing Andreas over Dalot.

Brentford decent at home. Started with a bit of a come back too. Could easily score v United in the Saturday evening encounter.

Wolves away could be tight and tricky for Fulham though.

Guy in my league got 78 points. Only return off the bench was Saliba (8).

Also had Kane, Jesus, MOUNT, Rashford, Bailey, TAA in the XI and I guess he wouldn't have played Saliba over them - but wouldn't be happy with it myself.

The same for me, just incredible. Coming off the back of Breaking Bad you knew Saul was a slow burner and felt different but the layering of all the characters and the plot was something else. And Lalo Salamanca, what a character. When we already had so many great ones from Breaking Bad, Kim Wexler and Nacho Varga were brilliant too.

It's like there is no wasted character in this show - they all unique and important for the storyline.

Lalo Salamanca - wow ! Have to say couldn't get my eyes of him every time he was on the screen.
Charisma, intelligence, humour but at the same time ruthless criminal almost like a devil himself.

Not that this is the only positive (there's tons) but there's so many sense, just like in Breaking Bad, where there's there's no speech & the tension just builds and builds - and you have no idea how it's going to play out.

Lalo on that woman's house. Gene in the house this episode. Etc etc.

Team derseves all the credit for pulling that off time & time again, making it so effective every time it happens.

If they were all definite starters this week who would you go with:

      A) Bailey (Everton)
      B) Pereira (Wolves)
      C) Dasilva (ManUtd)

Tempted by Dasilva if Frank gives any suggestion he starts. Jensen supposedly was disappointing on Sunday and Dasilva is the one that replaced him and couldn't have done much more. I've seen a lot of Brentford fans saying Jensen isn't good enough for the role and that Dasilva was excellent in their promotion year and Frank himself seemed to talk him up at the end of last year and over preseason.

Heh didn't realise I wrote it like that! I was leaning ever so slightly in favour of Pereira over Bailey but still not sure, I guess I'm worried Gerrard will change formation and leave out Bailey, didn't think Everton were too bad the other day either and Coady should help them defensively, Villa just didn't really create anything which is my worry. Pereira looked very good against Liverpool while Wolves looked very unorganised and generally messy

          1. Its a funny old game
            • 9 Years

Oh ok. Your surmise of what Gerrard is likely to do and leave out Bailey is my worry too. Nonetheless, will take the risk on Bailey for one more week, then ship him out for Pereira. I have Dewsbury Hall on the bench to step in if it goes south.

All three have merit in their own right for this particular gameweek until we know which one comes out of the block as a clear option.

Bailey- big pressure on Gerard to get a result at home you would think if they’re behind Gerard they beat Everton. However all Everton can do is defend as they’ve nothing there to attack with

Pereira- looked to be from watch motd highlights he was playing alongside mitro up front and had set pieces and corners so goals will come

You gave the argument yourself for Dasilva. Tough call. I’ve also pereira and Bailey but going to start Bailey. If villa score you would have to think Bailey would be involved if pre season is anything to work from.

Cheers for the input, I'll keep a close eye on Gerrard's presser and see how things look. From what I read Coutinho was the most disappointing so if any change was to be made it might be him so I guess we'll see

Your call, if it's any help there are definitely a few people around that have taken hits or even used WC to bring him in so you wontbe alone if you go for it, I'd expect he'll rise at least once more by Saturday night if not twice

Or you take the risk play and look at the bigger picture and keep Kane who imo is the best captaincy option for week 3 with wolves at home. Pool away to United and city away to Newcastle. Upside is Kane EO will be low and if he hauls you’re more than covered

Good thinking. The Wolves fixture crossed my mind. I have double City in Cancelo and Grealish so might be some assists about for me.

Problem is, he was a decent captaincy option in GW1 too, Spurs scored 4 and he got zero returns. Its a concern.

Agreed but he could also have scored a couple on that game also and then the narrative would be totally different. If he doesn’t return by week 3 I might look differently at it myself. But he hasn’t suddenly turned into a bad asset to own after one gameweek of no return.

No, keep Mount, he's a solid option and will get points. Could have scored if not for a good Pickford save the other day

I see Mount as one of those players you either keep all season or avoid. You know he'll end up with a decent score, but he's a bit streaky and it would be easy to jump on and off at the wrong times.

Have 0.5 itb tempted by Dias to Bowen for the Forest game, but nothing else is too pressing.

Feel like it gives you more flexibility to save, but Bowen is a great differential. NFO let up so many chances vs. NEW.

I guess it also frees up that 3rd Liverpool spot should you see yourself wanting Darwin/Robbo anytime soon.

Hmmm tough one, could be a nice differential and as Hazz says it opens up a Liverpool slot for you. West Ham were up against City who were really solid in possession on Sunday (even for City), but I did think West Ham were quite leggy and poor whenever they got on the ball, that might be my only worry. Not the worst idea to hold off, you'd be in an enviable position next week with 2FTs and spare cash itb

I think Doherty and Spence complicate things too much at RWB. Even at LWB there is Sess, Perisic and Reguillon (who will probably go on loan but if he doesn't...)

        What to do with Perisic?

If he’s staying in our teams, should we:
        A) Play him. It’s Chelsea away and could potentially be a cameo 1 pointer.
        B) Bench him and monitoring one more week. Potentially miss out on points, but still have him in the team for the future. In that case play Pereira that also could be a good shout versus Wolves.

        For those on WC

The biggest trap many have found themselves in is having all three of Bailey, Neto and Andreas. There is no value having all three because you will have a constant headache starting 2 of the 3.

Any budget midfielder other than Martinelli or JWP are risky. Even Aaronson is an unknown quantity at this point. There are other 5.5 mids floating around but they are 5.5 for a reason.

Owning 2 x 4.5 midfielders rotting on your bench is not the end of the world as you can have 3 starting midfielders packed with value. Same with 4 starting mids and one 4.5 rotting.

Pick wisely on your WC! Avoid traps.

Agreed, there is enough data and some great players emerging already. If you locked yourself into a particular system eg. 1 striker, then a wildcard could be the way to go. Flexibility is key, a couple of 5.0M defenders for example will let you jump on Sess, Doherty, Peresic, Cucurella etc as they emerge. The world cup wildcard definitely eases the burden of holding onto the first one this season.

I think it's far too early yet to state that a particular player, or combination of players is a trap regardless of price.

I personally wouldn't (and didn't) pick all three but they could still prove to be decent picks.

Of course you'll play/bench the wrong one some weeks but that's part of the game.
